<in reply to KG Erwin regarding modern games>

I think that both cardboard and PC games have their place. I have about a dozen games within reach of where I am sitting but I usually end up playing a PC game (provided they are real wargame like SPWaW or UV) for the convienience factor . I seem to have such a busy lifestyle these days and the bunch of mates that used to come round on Friday night with their six pack of beers just don't have a Pause or Save Game button......

Hi, I started in 1985. Dauntless and Airforce, air to air combat in the Pacific and Europe.

Then progressed to the Europa series, Western Desert, Torch and Near East in the late eighties. I bought but have never played Scorched Earth and Fire in the East.

I discovered the original Squad Leader in 1990 and have just moved into Advanced Squad Leader in the last few months.

My first computer wargame was Steel Panthers 1 back in 1996? , and here I am in 2004 still playing Steel Panthers 8

Panzer Leader and Squad Leader back in the 70's was the start of tactical wargaming
for me, but does anyone remember a board game from those day's called "Summit"?
I have searched the net but can't find any info on this game, use to play it all the time back in those day's but over the years lost touch with it. Can anyone help?

Looks like we have a history here...I think wargamers are diehards and to one degree or another, just keep playing and playing.

Interesting to read of each one and his initiation into the hobby.

I started with the old Avalon Hill Gettysburg and Tactics II back in the 60s. I played a zillion games of PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader in the 70s. In the 80s I worked for a company called GR/D which produced a series of games called Europa, and so I mainly played Europa games until the early 90s (after I finished assisting with the design and production of Second Front). In the mid 90s, Steel Panthers was released and I quit Europa and began playing Steel Panthers. I've been playing SP games pretty much constantly for the past 9 years, and counting.

In 1977 at the age o f thirteen i bought AH's SUBMARINE and PANZERLEADER. They were quickly followed by tactics II, third reich, MBT, B-17, Flight leader, Circus Maximus, airforce, Squadleader and add ons, asl+... and many more! Had friends who played too! I was Lucky! then i got a copy of Panzer Strike for the c-64. Holy cats! we played by mail! sent cassette data tapes. LOL. Those were amazing times. I credit having read all the verious rule books as a direct impact on my increased grammer grades. :-)

I had played a few stratedgy/wargames on my SNES and Playstation but I guess my actual first wass CC2 It came in a microsoft game pack along with 4 other games (cant remember the others)
I played it to death and the hobby gathered momemtum.
Now 50% of my game purchases are wargames.

I've played TLD, along with many others. Too few against human opponents. Wargames are my raison d'etre.

since 1962 when i got a copy of tactics 2 from my church. fondly remember sacrificing both amphib and both para units to try to capture the BIG nuke. that would be 42 years (including some 1-1 scale with the army)
went through battle of the bulge, afrika korps, jutland (still have them). and then came panzerblitz and spi.

Guys it seems we have enough time playing war games. That if we stacked the days and years. We would reach back to the stone age. When the first kid there played with rocks.

I myself would put in the stack nearly sixty years. Thats if you counted me lining up a deck of cards with the spades as Germans and the clubs as the Italians. Where the other side was Diamonds were the British and the hearts was USA. Loved the USA even then.

Well Avlon Hill games for me were the 1st I recall. (Panzer Leader, Battle of the Bulge and Third Reich)

Europa games name them and we played them, as late as last year (favorite all time: Fire in the East)

Squad Leader of course
ASL - not as much as SL, coud not find as many opponents.

Various other ones, but those are the ones that bring a good memory and more.

ahhh. you guys bring back memories.
I had a Uncle that gave me AH's Jutland in 71? ... it was downhill from there

I still think back about the all night(hell all weekend) Third Reich games in High School
sometimes that board got thrown across the room.... So many great rule disputes.

Then there was Tobruq, Blitzkreig, Afrika Korps, Bulge, ...< my eyes are getting watery>

I have to figure I started wargaming at age 8. Me and my buddy made up a game using squads of lego men. Each man could move 12 inches per turn. Rubber bands simulated rifle fire. If a guy got hit he died instantly. We used ping pong balls to simulate artillery fire. A bedroom floor was our battlefield, and there were plenty of obstacles. We had a pretty thorough rule system. That was serious wargaming! It sure beat the heck out of that Atari battlefield game, risk and stratego which I also played as a young kid.
