Well its been another couple of quiet days in our war - mostly us trading bombings and sub attacks. Last turn I took Mersing - was empty so my 2 squads took it I also took Moulmein once more. I also had major attacks at Hanoi and Nanning which drove off Rob's delaying forces. I should be able to surround them and completely wipe them out within a week - this should give me a nice point bonus.

I also attacked San Marcelino and got repulsed. Same at Sian

I landed some troops on Guadalcanal via sub and its turning into a joke.. Rob has no one there - no surprise, but my sub loaded 1 squad, 1 AT gun and 1 mortar... The AT gun was damage during the landing and the unit could only perform a bombardment attack - I have no idea why... This turn Rob hit it with a single DD and now the entire unit is damaged and worthless.... pretty funny actually.

On the 19th I attacked again and did some good damage at Sian and should take it in a couple of days. I am bombing the hell out of San Marcelino and waiting for a few more troops before attacking again - hopefully it will make a difference...

Well this turn 1 sunk a TK with a sub - the poor TK taking 3 torps before exploding and sinking to the bottom. Geez, sure hope Rob NEEDED that fuel :) Not much else going on.

Rob beat up my crippled Naval Guard unit again - and this time he lost more than it did AND he helped it retreat into a base at least 3 days faster than it would have normally - THANKS ROB !!

Have fun with the report..

I'd just like to report that Flight Officer Browning scored his 11th and 12 kills of the war today. That air battle was fun to watch...thought it would never end.

Well another day and once more nothing much happening... We both lost a sub and a merchie this turn and there was more bombing and another major attack at Sian, which was barely repulsed by the chinese garrison there - although the fort was reduced to 0 and the chinese defenders suffered more losses than the japanese attackers -- the general in charge says the base will fall today... tomorrow at the latest.

I have been using these slow days to examine my industrial position and have decided that its still too weak so I have expended my remaining surplus of Supplies to expand some more HI in my smaller Home Island bases - anything with 30 or less got expanded - which will cost me around 60,000 supplies in the long run, but give me another 60 HI which I need. This should be the last expansion for some time - at least several months...

Due to war losses and damages, the IJN have also ordered another 8 AKs converted into ARs. This will give the IJN 19 ARs when its all said and done and positions for 16 of them are already established leaving 3 spares for account for damage and losses...

Many of you are saying 'What the Heck is he thinking with that many ARs ?' and you are kind right.. But so far as the war goes on I am suffering more and more damaged ships - nothing major but in the 20-30 sys range. Most of these are happening on the edges of my empire and have to sit in large bases to remove fire and flood damage before making the LOOOOONG trip home (at 1 or 2 hexes per turn) to be repaired... By having more ARs I will be able to place a couple at my front lines to speed up repairs of fire and flooding and so my front line ships with low amounts of damage (less than 10) do not have to make the trip home for repairs, but can repair while still being in theater - this should allow me to respond faster and with more ships than if I send them home for repairs... Also, once a ship makes it to a forward repair base it can stay there and not risk more submarine attacks on the way home - plus I do not have to further weaken the front by assigning ASW escorts to these damaged ships... In all, I think it will work out better this way... Plus, by having some extra ARs (3 right now) I will be able to replace units heavily damaged or even sunk by enemy attacks...

Well here's the turn for ya...

The Melbourne Post, January 20th 1942

An Australian ship just returns to base with a badly shaken Japanese prisonner with a strange story. It seems that he was part of a small squad laned by a sub in Lunga to take the base, that was reported by radio by the local coastwatcher. It seems that the Japanese leader broke a taboo by contempt and the local natives attacked them while they were repairing a gun that fell from the submarine dinghy. As far as the prisonner knows, the party leader was captured and then eaten by the natives. The Japanese survivors took refuge on a peninsule that was then pounded by our valliant RAN destroyer and that was when our Japanese man decided to give up. Having the choice between the natives cooking habits and captivity in Australia, he did the right choice.

I can just see this little bunch of men standing on the beach after the sub dropped them off going "Dude, where's my tent!?".

From UV "dot-hopping-in-a-LCI" experience I know you need at least a handful of squads to take a base. Apparently support troops, mortars and solo tanks don't cut it :(

Well another day and another TK lost to a dutch submarine Thats 2 in 2 days.. I hope this stops as I can't afford to be losing them this quickly nor this early - luckily I have been rationing my extra merchant shipyard points on TKs only so I will get several way ahead of schedule... But that schedule is still not for 90+ days..

My chinese troops took Sian today and captured over 20,000 supplies - enough to repair the battle damage and replace a lot of lost units... My men are resting a couple days before pushing forward...

My troops took Cotabato on Mandanao, leaving only 2 little bases to clean up and no serious enemy force. The enemy troops fleeing Cotabato has a PA division in it, but with no supply and fleeing from my men it is in no shape for any fighting - now I just need to clean it up...

Speaking of cleaning up enemy units - its a pain.. They retreat into the jungle and you have to go get them or risk them coming back to haunt you later. I have a good dozen units or more doing just this in china, trying to end the existance of a dozen or so chinese units..

My advisors are considering Operation Go For Broke which is a large invasion of an enemy held island far from home. The assets are almost available, but the decision if we should expand that far is not known yet.. Will have to do some careful studying of logistic availability and distance before making that decision.

Well here the reports..

You have just given the Allied intel an apoplectic fit. Me thinks that Robbo would do well to pay very close attention to the intel screen.

Well another day goes by in the war against the imperial westerners....

Pretty slow again, although one of my subs sitting 100 miles east of PH saw a TF and put 3 torps into a US CL blasting her to pieces !! My first warship kill in quite a while..

In china I had something odd happen.. I have some chinese units surrounded and cut off and managed to get 165:1 odds on them and nothing happened - they didn't surrender, they didn't retreat... Odd huh ?

Well have fun...

My advisors are considering Operation Go For Broke which is a large invasion of an enemy held island far from home. The assets are almost available, but the decision if we should expand that far is not known yet.. Will have to do some careful studying of logistic availability and distance before making that decision.

You have just given the Allied intel an apoplectic fit. Me thinks that Robbo would do well to pay very close attention to the intel screen.

What makes you think Rob isnt doing just that

>CL Concord, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage * Sunk <

Get off the Saki, it never happened.

By the way, Operation Needle has been an overwhelming success.

This has been another week of fleeing everywhere but Burma. My earlier efforts of reinforcement and entenchment at Rangoon have more then paid off. We have stopped the Xargunites south of Moulmein, where his troops continue to reorganize and resupply before attempting to push north. RAF Hurricanes dealt one of his air attacks a major defeat and the skies have been empty over Akbar and Rangoon ever since. He can't both take Singapore and push north similtaneously and he knows it. Between all the Commonwealth and Chinese troops I have moved into area, he is going to have a hard fight to push any further north.

I have high hopes that Operation Go for it will proceed. I have spent most of the first six weeks of the war building up key spots on the map where I could react to any attack he puts forth. These spots are now fortified and full of airplanes and troops just waiting for Japanese incursion. Rangoon was one of those areas, there are three others Im sure victory fever will force him to cross into.

China is going about how I expected it too. I did manage to delay him around Hanoi and my boys in Nanning fight on. Other then that its one large retreat. He is pushing thousands of troops north to lanchow. They will be met by thousands of Chinese troops, but I think it is unlikely I can do much more then be a speedbump for his steam roller there.

Singapore continues to hold on as does the PI. I expect PI to hold on through March. He simply does not have the forces to take it.

I have to say, I LOVE my dutch submarines. They have inflicted more damage on his shipping then the entire rest of my war effort. According to "reports" he has sank dutch sub 019 3 times...I assure you gentle readers, she is alive and still operating at a unknown spot in the ocean.

The Concord is now a fish habitat... you can lie to your press all you want

Operation Needle - bleah... No affect.. BTW, quit mining Wake before I have to wipe out Midway and PH... Its not doing anything other than being a pain in the ...

Operation Go For Broke is still in planning stages... and right now it looks like 60/40 chance of being approved... And you won't be expecting it

Lanchow will be Japanese even if I have to whip all the japanese troops into a frenzy to take it... I am inching closer and closer... I have 100,000 troops in the imediate area AND more on the way, as fresh units from Manchukuo begin to cover my garrison requirements

Rangoon will fall.. just maybe not how you think.... The more men and supplies you put there the more I will capture / kill..

Singapore is about to be hit with a whirlwind... Its the last base on Malaya and I have been moving air and ground assets into position for the final push.. It will take maybe a week to fall once I attack...

The PI is a problem for me... As Rob has said, I do not believe I have the forces to win anytime soon... But I will keep plugging away for what its worth and soon will begin a massive air campaign to reduce his supply ability... WOrst case, I leave him bottled up in his little bases for another month or so - he'll be starving by then... and I don't really need the troops I have there anywhere else yet..

I HATE the dutch... Despite their success my ASW efforts have been better than I hoped so far.. I have sunk 12 allied subs in only 6 weeks of combat.. I attribute most of these to Rob flooding the waters around Japan and my large ASW TFs.. Now he is using them at isolated bases picking off lone ships.. This will stop once my ASW groups get spread out more and ships in dangerous areas begin having escorts..

Overall I think I am doing good - especially in china... Rob & I have discussed adbandoning the game in favor of the new patch, but right now we are not gonna do it... Although, if I encounter the CV bug (new CVs don't appear) then I definately will reconsider - especially after accelerating her for a long time now... But hopefully that won't happen and our game can continue..

More time flows and more sinks sink

It seems Rob is trying to reinforce Akyab and Rangoon with troops and supply via the sea once more and my bombers have been doing nothing for a while waiting for this to happen.. I sunk 1 AP and 3 AKs this turn, hopefully all fully loaded. The AP was trying to sneak in Akyab and the AKs were part of a large AK TF heading for Rangoon when my bombers caught them.. I think I put a couple more torps into more ships that didn't sink so it ought to slow down the entire TF enough that I should hit them again before they reach port. With only a few targets left I should sink them all this time around.

Over 50,000 screaming Japanese troops attacked Kungchang and drove off the three chinese units holding it. Unfortunately for me I only captured 6000 supplies which are enough to feed my men for 2 days only there.. BUT, the good thing about that is that I'm right next to Lanchow (my main goal in the north) and if this base was that low on supplies, Lanchow should be low as well.. Plus if he has as many units as I think he has there then he is sucking down supplies at a huge rate and will be starving soon... Easy pickings...

I am about to close the coffin on about 10 chinese units in southern china who are all but cutoff and surrounded. They should die soon.

My troops are going into Singapore soon and I think I will have it easy there - call it a hunch... Bad weather over Saigon has stopped most of my air attacks on singapore but the weather should be clearing soon.. Same thing for Formosa bombing PI - bad weather is hampering my war efforts badly in the air...

Operation Artic Blizzard is finally launching - after waiting for more fuel. Expect to see preliminary results in a couple days

Operation Polar Hammer is close to launching as well after some last minute shuffling of assets.

Operation Doolittle was a complete failure and those responsible will be held accountable... This was my sub invasion of Lunga - which failed miserably and then partial unit on lunga is now gone... starved...

Operation Go For Broke has entered the level 2 planning stages and the odds are it'll probably be a go... But not for a while - need to gather units from all over - probably 3 weeks before its ready to go...

And a new Operation - Cherry Blossom is being planned as we speak - most assets are in place and its just a matter of timing and deciding on a target.. Expect Cherry Blossom to hit in 2 weeks.

Well thats about it... Here's the reports...

silly xargunite...sniffing glue again I see. The AKs you hit were leaving Rangoon :). You happily placed torpedos into merchants that were already low in the water...from earlier airstrikes. Gone but not lost. As to the continued supply of Burma. The sealanes remain open thanks to a little plane called Hurricane...remember them from the air battle of Akyab. :) thought so.

As to that little island. Assets in place. Boy are you in for surprise...I say launch Operation oh gawd go for it :). Continue to dwiddle and dawdle. Time marches on and the its on my side :)....Coming soon USS Hornet, to join her sisters Saratoga, Enterprise and Yorktown in rolling back the xargun menance.

Speaking of surprises by the time you read this the results of a lil operation we call level your airfield should of come and gone...hope you enjoyed it.

Hows that timetable...:) seems you are a bit behind your schedule now...

(by the way I am enjoying the hell out of this PBEM and boring my wife to death with the details :) can't wait until we can talk about what we were up to)

I am going to really go out on a limb here and state that any IJN player who has not taken Burma by early'42 is never going to.

I'm going to go out on an even thinner and longer lomb and ask; why bother taking Burma at all? Luskan has proved pretty conclusively, IMHO, that the INJ can control the seaborne communications in the Bay of Bengal virtually at will after the fall of Singapore. Why bother slogging through malaria-ridden jungles? Not even Rangoon is worth the losses. In fact, there is not a single base in all of Burma that warrants the effort. Why not make an end-run straight for India? Sure, the initial landings will give you a better fight than Burmese forces can. But in the end, you not only save time, troops and resources, but also cut off the entire host in Burma, are able to operate on stable terrain which offers the IJA a bigger advantage than the Brits (given adequate numbers), and are within striking distance of much more tantalizing targets than ill-begotten Rangoon.

Because Burma is the the key to India, and India is the supply life line for China. Cut the supply line to China and you have a very real chance of victory. Yes Luskan has proved in the PBEM that I am currently play against him that the IJN CAN controll the seas of Bengal.........but only under certain conditions:-

1/ Only in early 1942 is this IMHO possible as after May '42 the RAF starts to get LOTS of reinforcements and is well on it's way to contesting the air over the Bay of Bengal and the region.

2/ Luskan's "control" is only effective when his this there to enforce it.

3/ The IJN cannot continue to devote the warships needed to maintain that type of control for an extended period as there are other pressing areas such as the rest of the map.

any palyer who hasn't taken burma by early 42 isn't going to eh??
I'd contest that. A few good amphib hooks - and hopefully the allied player is dump enough to land troops at Akyab (takes longer to march up that hungle trail than it does to march them to rangoon from chandpur), while my units sit at rangoon at 100% readiness, 0 disruption and 0 fatigue, and my betties are sinking the shipping you keep sending in and out of Akyab? Fine by me. Hurricanes just don't match zeros. The AVG is at mandalay I've noted (even my battleships can't shoot that far inland) and a good jap player will neutralise them somehow. I've got one fairly promising idea . . . The idea is not to take Burma. I don't really want it - it doesn't have nearly enough oil and resources, and those resources are too far away by rail from any real industry to be worth having.

No Burma is about cutting china off, or it is about embroiling the enemy in a slow, grinding campaign. Problem is the allies always win this sort of fight.

I am curious why your Sally's are bombing ships from 20000 ft up? Not too effective way up there ? Nice target practice otherwise.

Allies Smash Japanese Task Force Off Amboina

(AP) Brisbane ABDA Headquarters is reporting that Dutch and American warships raided the former Dutch colony overnight sinking at least 5 Japanese navy vessels. The overnight raid designated Operation Needle caught the enemy ships by surprise and in two running engagements sank 2 enemy warships and left at least three cargo vessals burning heavily. Allied commanders reported that the task force pounded the enemy shipping and followed up the surface action with a bombardment of port and air facilities at Amboina. Dutch commanders were reported to be very satisfied with the results of the raid. It is well know that Allied commanders believe that the Japanese are badly overextended and cannot protect all their new holdings, but would offer no comment on whether the Japanese could expect future attacks on its new holdings in the near future.

unfortunately I think I know what operation go for broke is, and although i can't be sure i've been considering the same invasion myself vs raver.

I didn't go for it because I just can't account for all the allied forces involved. If I knew where certain allied divisons were (and therefore where they AREN"T) then I'd be there in a flash.

Well despite the Allies lies, the IJN Command does admit that a TF of Allied warships ran into Amboina harbor last night and attacked nearly defenseless ships delivering medical and humanitarian supplies to the once oppressed people on Amboina. The ruthless allies attacked defenseless ships and then proceeded to shell the port and surrounding area as well. As dawn came the wreckage was surveyed.. Very little damage was done to the port and airfield itself, and only a single ship has sunk so far, but several are critically damaged and may sink at any time.

The USN lost the DD Maury which had a problem with water leaking into the ship after running into a couple of IJN torpedoes yesterday... The USN also lost another DD today (DD Flusser) with the same problem - but this time it was reportedly 3 IJN torps causing the problem.. It seems Rob's ASW was very powerful at the beginning of the war around PH but is fairly weak right now as my subs play havoc on his TFs in that area.

Wallis Island was captured by troops landing via submarine transport. While this island (along with Christmas Island) are not strategically important, they are still part of a larger plan...

The last Allied troops on Mindanao are under heavy attack and are expected to die or surrender in the next day or two.

Not much more to say here so I'll post the AAR and let you guys enjoy... BTW, Luskan, if you want to post what you think Operation Go For Broke is go ahead.. I will neither comfirm nor deny it of course, but am interested in what you think it is...

Operation Burning Steel has begun, in the next 3 to 5 days we will see if we can shake up the Xargunite dynasty a bit. Should be fun. I believe he is about to reveal to me the location of his many air fleets, when he does I will strike and strike hard.
