I don't really have any trouble with this. I deliberately assign more transports to the task than is required, because I like to spread my troops out to minimize the risk of loss in the event of a sub attack. So even if I might fit an LCU into a single AP, I routinely assign 2 or 3 to carry it, plus an AK to carry any disabled elements. Works for me.

My problem is I use what I think is more than enough transports only to leave part of the unit behind. I think capacity is a really just one part of what we need on the display to have an accurate gauge of what we need. It seems that the units divide into some minimum number of sub-groups. The display since one ship can only load one sub-group displaying this next to the LCU in the load list would be a HUGE help. I then know, if I have mostly medium-large sized AK's and AP's, how many individual ships I'll need.

take the size and add 10% and you'll find it fits.

Where you get into trouble is with different sized ships mixed together. It makes it much tougher to judge how things will split up because they do not break apart evenly.

The same holds true for units that fit better into AK's then AP's because they are mostly non-grunts.

Practice and you will get better at eyeballing the numbers. There is not easy way around this.

Once upon a time, I proposed a shipyard type panel where you could shuffle stuff around between ships and troops and then click done once you were happy, but that is a feature request that may never become a reality, not part of the original design.
