I think top left hex, but please don't quote me on this. I seem to remember problems a while back with OBA hitting nothing but a small square of hexes in the upper left sseciton of the map. How you figure range from that is something I don't know.
When I figure "slant" range for small (50mm)onboard mortars and so on, I use the time-honored "Square Root of the sum of the squares of the left-right distance and the up-down distance" and it works OK. If, for instance, the solution comes out to 10.3 or 10.5, then the mortar with a range of 11 can still be used. I.e. I don't see where the game routine "rounds up".
I think some of the problems with offboard 75's have been fixed, but you absolutely do have to take a serious look at the range of the piece and the mpa you will be playing on - even if its a big map, the area of your operations may allow for 75's to operate.
