Andy drives his carriers and transports into Miri harbour, knowing the CAP will knock down
the attacking ac. Bad weather covered the base of my kamis in the AM phase while it covered Miri in the afternoon...not much
luck in other words.

The CAP gunned down everything that came their way - no coordinated attacks of course.

At Marcus Island the enemy is manouvering and the Combined Fleet is manouvering.
Moving it closer to the Bonins under a 5-600 strong CAP. Let's see if Andy is bold enough to move closer.
Our Jacks over Marcus were an average of 55 exp and though shooting down some Hellcats, suffered casualties.

The advantage is that Marcus is only a size 1 AF, even if Andy captures it he has to keep carriers around to
protect it from out bombardment runs. Think we need patience here.

Thx, hopefully you will be able to repeat that as we enter 1946

Andy expected me to come in with guns blazing at Marcus Island.
Of course we're not. Can't afford to run after the enemy without air superiority.
Both Wake and Marcus Islands are virtually undefendable if Andy keeps his cv's around.

Tried to place more fighters on the islands, but non of them took off and were all destroyed
on the ground. Hm, strange - AF damage wasn't that high.

The Combined Fleet will stay around the Bonin Islands under protection of a heavy CAP.
Numerous convoys with supplies and troops are streaming towards these islands and I want to
protect them as well as keeping the fleet as a deterrent to Andy.

At Miri we only achieve kamikaze hits on 2 enemy ships including a ca despite the sacrifice of
a high exp Zeke unit. The enemy shock attack only achieved a 1-1 odds though and I'm going to do
my best to destroy the enemy at Miri. Marching troops from Brunei is out of the question, 2 miles
pr day dirt road.

Not sure why Andy sticks one of his elite divisions into a malaria pit without air cover. Going to
be wrecked beyong recognition by the time the battle is over - one way or another. Miri is only a size
2 af and within range of dozens of Jap airfields.

Andy moved 2 carrier TFs towards the Bonins, causing the KB and the US cv's to react towards each other.
This could have become very dangerous, but bad weather prevented enemy air strikes.

We're holding our own at Wake and Mili while Marcus Island is in trouble due to lack of supplies.

I am preparing a defensive campaign in order to weaken the enemy's fighter strength. This is imperative and
all air attacks, except at night, will be useless before this has been achieved.

I'm a bit confused by Andy's all out attack against the Bonins. He could have done this 6 months ago instead of
going into Malaya. Will he leave this peninsula semi isolated instead of pressing the attack? Mili doesn't appear
to be more than a half hearted diversion that will be more costly to the Allies than for Japan.

Pretty confident that we can protect the Bonins and make Andy pay for his efforts in the Central Pacific as well

Andy is wondering why I'm 'holding back':

That's what Hitler told his generals before the Battle of the Bulge too.....

I am surprised you are sitting back so much !!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are striking back, but not any harder than we can afford to replace our losses.
The battle will be long and hard. Let Andy make the mistakes and I'll take the job as punisher

Today long range P54D Mustangs escorted enemy bombers for the first time. Not good.

The fall of Wake and Marcus Islands will not be critical, but open the door for attacks on the Bonins and
Northern Home Islands. This is something we are ready for. My main objective: Make the Bonins impossible to capture.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/03/45

There were multiple enemy landings on Marcus Island, as well as bombardment.
More enemy troops continued their embarkation at Mili as well.

Enemy was mostly hit by light cannon fire and suffered light to moderate damage.

Air Combat

The usual air strikes against Wake and Marcus Island. Not worth going into detail.
Andy put his carriers just south of Iwo Jima, reduced his search and strike ac to 2 hexes and hit

Were will Andy go? The damaged carrier will not be able to steam at more than ca 18-20 knots.
I am concentrating our forces around Bonin Island.

Soon I will move more troops and supplies to Iwo as well. Have to keep my forces together as they
will be easily defeated piecemeal.

Andy smells blood and moves move carriers towards the Bonins. Doesn't look like he'll invade.
Too hot for the KB, so I move 200 Zekes ashore.

I'm having big problems getting my CAP fighters to fly. Since radar doesn't work I usually never have more
than 30-40% of my fighters in the air when the enemy arrives. This is becoming critical.

The only reply I have is kamikaze attacks. Using crack Zekes from high altitude.
With enemy so close to the heart of the Empire I will throw everything I got at Andy.

hmmm...so far i didn't had problems with getting most of my fighers in the air to provide CAP - but my base forces are still equiped with sound detectors not broken radar. I must ask once again - could this broken radar cause a failure of your fighers to scramble against enemy ac? (sound detector is not very effective but i think i always have more than 70 % fighers ordered on CAP duty in the air when the enemy comes?). It seems that you stuck with broken land based radars which doesn't work at all but you lost your sound detectors due to upgrade to radar?

Sinking the enemy CVL perhaps isn't so spectactular knowing that Andy have a tones of them, but this is a really nice job!

Andy must be stopped at Bonins! Do everything you can to prevent this. If you loose Bonins you are going to face a hordes of B-29 destroying Home Islands! With Marcus in his hands Andy will be able to launch long range air attacks on HI, but i think you can handle with B-29 flying from one base - your figher bombers, night fighers (did you train them?) and other ac with high gun value can do the job, me thinks!

I agree with you and your "hidden" hestiation to park several divisions on the Bonins. But i'm not sure what you else you can do. I'm facing with similar situation in my game. Don't want to reinforce my atoll garnison beyond 500-600 AP (must admit that i'm short with ground units too) since it seems a bit unrealisticly. If defender put a 800 AP on the atoll, then attacker will gather and land 5000 AP - a quite a lot of troops on atolls.

But, as i've said above, there is nothing else than you can do. Since this is a flaw in the engine, i do not feel you are doing something wrong. At least you will engage a lot of his units and therefore slow down his advance...

Banzai!

I'm afraid that is how it must be Pauk! Out of 200 CAP fighters on Bonin a mere 50 met the enemy today

Don't think Andy is coming for the Bonins now. It will be a prolonged battle of attrition which he can't afford.
So I'm moving the KB out and filling up with fighters and surface combatants, subs and night bombers.

Both Bonin and Iwo are mountain hexes, when I place 60k troops on each of them Andy will have to find another way
to bomb the Home Islands. He will not use B-29s from a size 4 AF - which is all Marcus can ever become. The limited
damage he can inflict from Wake we will take.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/05/45

Invasions

Enemy troops continue to trickle ashore at Miri. We now got 10000 troops in the base,
and I'm confident we can hold with 8 forts.

Coastal Guns at Miri, 31,57, firing at TF 1107

24 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Allied ground losses:
119 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surface Combat

I moved most of the Combined Fleet out of the Bonins and brought a Base Force unit
to Iwo by fast transports. 2x3 enemy destroyer TFs arrived in Bonin/Iwo and clashed with
my asw and fast transport groups. No serious damage except for a patrol boat being sunk.

This indicates that Andy detached 6 destroyers and that his surface fleet still hasn't arrived.

My BIG mistake was that I forgot to increase heigh of my high exp Zeke kamikaze units. This lead to the
loss of them all, some 70

We did manage to sink the cvl Jacinto at least.

Ah, almost lost the last post as the session timed out. If that wasn't enough I was logged OUT when I tried to
re-post it Good thing I'm so paranoid...

We can only inflict attritional losses and attempt to intercept the enemy carriers with our surface fleet at the Bonins for now.
Expended our experienced kamis on medium altitude attacks - which is even more certain death than crashing against enemy ships

So the KB with a light escort has moved back to Tokyo and taken aboard their naval attack groups.
Moving out in 2 divisions, Main Striking Force and the Light Carrier Group 1. The plan is to manouver north east of Marcus and hit the
enemy in the flank while the dragon got its head in the Bonins. In the south I'm moving a surface combat group from the Marianas towards Wake.
Should make Andy paranoid too...

Still got an ample supply of ac, moving them from China and to the PI and Home Islands.
Annoys me that it is soo difficult to destroy the enemy at Miri. Our airfields are damaged and the attacks are too small to inflict serious
casualties. Brunei has to provide both fighters and bombers as Jesselton, Tarakan and other bases nearby are small and damaged. Miri itself is a size
2 AF and holds some fighters and dive bombers. Also flying in troops with some 50 transports - trying to keep the max number of operational ac at 100 (50x base size)
as agreed upon with Andy.

In the Home Islands I'm preparing another Air HQ for the Bonins, an Engineer Reg and a full crack division from China for Iwo as well as the super heavy artillery
brigade and several heavy AA units.

Our last attempts to intercept the enemy carriers came to naught.

It seems like Andy is steaming away from the Bonins. This gives us the opportunity to bring in
supplies to Iwo Jima and correct a potentially lethal weakness. I will need to have 50k supplies on
all important bases. Supplies on Marcus and Iwo had dwindled way too low. Even 21k at Wake was too little,
but there's still a reserve left there.

I have noticed that several enemy TFs seems to be heading NE from Marcus Island. It is possible that Andy will
attempt a move north. The Fleet, Army and Air Force are all prepared to meet such a threat.

After having had that happen a couple of times, I now copy the content to the clipboard before I post it. That way if it did time out, I just call up a new post and paste it in.

I keep a copy of the AAR before I post it, rest assured guys
The issue being logged out is new though...and since the pwd is impossible to remember it always rewoke
a few grumpy words!-)

Ok, situation is still heated but a bit more calm in the Pacific.
The enemy is building Marcus Island, 2 AF now. Enemy cv's all around the place, and I'm suspecting a surprise
move north by Andy. This is something I would welcome as I have invested in large garrisons and sizeable air support
units in Northern Japan, Paramushiro and Sakhalin.

I need to analyze the stand off battle at the Bonins:
It was a dangerous and potential lethal situation for both of us, but we can't afford to loose the Combined Fleet nor
the KB at this stage of the war.

Andy doesn't have the pilots to sustain a prolonged campaign against LBA and the Combined Fleet.
If he had gotten a clean strike against the KB or invaded Iwo Jima that was down to 3k supplies, we would have suffered badly.
If I hadn't forgotten to increase the height of our crack Zeke kamikazes, Andy would have lost more than a cvl.

Since we can't go toe to toe against the US Fleet, we have to seek protection close to our LBA. This is a treacherous safety
though. The question is: WHEN and WHERE should we deploy the Combined Fleet the next time Andy invades?

If we doesn't support the threatened sector with the fleet, LBA will be shut down by air and surface bombardments.
The seemingly inability of Jap bases to launch large strikes and provide a full size CAP also seriously undermines our defences.

I will seriously consider converting 4 large crack Zeke Daitais next time Andy attacks and throw them against his cv's.
This is the only serious threat he faces before attrition forces him to withdraw.

Tomorrow the new RO subs starts arriving, and 20-30 will arrive over the next month or two.
Will use them as scouts, minelayers and pickets.

In the DEI I'm going to try to hit Andy's withdrawing fleet with an Air Armada based in Palembang - which is now 100% operational again. Some 100 fighters and 150 bombers stand ready.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/08/45

Surface Combat

I sent a destroyer squadron to guard my cargo ships at Iwo Jima.
8 of them were not capable of handling 3 new US destroyers that attacked them
Only 1 of our ships was a veteran, the rest were new Tachibana and Momi class boats.

The 5/40 gun again showed its deficiency as shells bounced of the enemy from 9k yards and up.
2 of our ships were sunk while 3 more suffered heavy damage.

1 enemy destroyer was left in a bad shape while another took moderate damage.

1st round - enemy achieves surprise:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Iwo Jima at 63,53

Japanese Ships
DD Onami
DD Okinami, Shell hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
DD Nara
DD Tsubaki, Shell hits 8, on fire, heavy damage
DD Tachibana, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Nire
DD Hayabusa, Shell hits 3, on fire
DD Hato, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Braine, Shell hits 9, on fire
DD Chevalier
DD Norman Scott, Shell hits 1, on fire

2nd round: Enemy gets another free first round of fire!

Night Time Surface Combat, near Iwo Jima at 63,53

Japanese Ships
DD Onami, Shell hits 2
DD Okinami, Shell hits 9, on fire, heavy damage
DD Nara, Shell hits 1
DD Tsubaki, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Nire
DD Hayabusa, Shell hits 9, and is sunk
DD Hato, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Braine, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Chevalier
DD Norman Scott, Shell hits 1, on fire
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Air Combat

Todays air battles can be divided into 3 phases:
1. Fouled enemy attack on the Bonins by carriers and P-51D Mustang sweep
2. Major air strikes on enemy carriers SSE of Singapore.
3. Air combat over Miri.

Let's take a look at the debable at the Bonins:

Andy sent his carriers back towards Bonin and probably planned a major strike on our ships
there after sweeping our CAP away. Bad weather closed down the enemy carriers all day and
the attempt came to naught

Day Air attack on Bonin , at 65,52

Japanese aircraft <- I'm pretty sure that these numbers are not correct and that more ac were on CAP than the actual numbers show
A6M2-N Rufe x 3 - based on the Yamato
A6M2 Zero x 5
A6M5 Zeke x 17
N1K1-J George x 9
J2M Jack x 5
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 29
Ki-84-Ia Frank x 34

Allied aircraft
F-5C Lightning x 1
P-51D Mustang x 32 <- Combat debute. Launched from Marcus Island and straight into the lions den. Poor bastards.

Japanese aircraft losses <- Our losses were very light, except from the Oscars that is. Very few pilots were killed or wounded.
A6M2-N Rufe: 1 destroyed
A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed
A6M5 Zeke: 7 destroyed
N1K1-J George: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
J2M Jack: 2 destroyed
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 17 destroyed
Ki-84-Ia Frank: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses -> Andy will have to rebuild and rest this Wing as it looses half its strength.
P-51D Mustang: 20 destroyed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Air strike on enemy carriers near Singapore

Palembang managed to launch a few smaller and one big raid on the enemy convoys retiring from Borneo.
It was costly but we achieved some results:

Day Air attack on TF at 24,52

Japanese aircraft
J2M Jack x 8
G4M2 Betty x 6
P1Y Frances x 4
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 4
Ki-102a Randy x 19
Ki-67 Peggy x 6

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 5
F6F Hellcat x 62
F4U-1D Corsair x 23

Japanese aircraft losses - a 0/47 battle. This is a typical example of how the Uber CAP work.
J2M Jack: 8 destroyed
G4M2 Betty: 6 destroyed
P1Y Frances: 4 destroyed
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 4 destroyed
Ki-102a Randy: 19 destroyed
Ki-67 Peggy: 6 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F6F Hellcat: 6 damaged
F4U-1D Corsair: 2 damaged
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Waay too few fighters escorted our main strike, but the relatively large number of bombers made it possible for a few
to break through the Uber CAP:

Day Air attack on TF at 24,52

Japanese aircraft
J2M Jack x 15
G4M2 Betty x 61
P1Y Frances x 6
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 12
Ki-67 Peggy x 32

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 4
F6F Hellcat x 50
F4U-1D Corsair x 17

Japanese aircraft losses
J2M Jack: 13 destroyed
G4M2 Betty: 36 destroyed
P1Y Frances: 3 destroyed
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 12 destroyed
Ki-67 Peggy: 20 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses - a 4/80 kill ratio, or 1/20.
FM-2 Wildcat: 1 damaged
F6F Hellcat: 2 destroyed, 27 damaged
F4U-1D Corsair: 2 destroyed, 6 damaged

Allied Ships
CV Wasp, Torpedo hits 1, on fire <- suffers fuel storage explosion and should be out of business for a while. She's a flimsy carrier at best.
CVL Belleau Wood
CVL Langley, Torpedo hits 1 <- damage doesn't seem serious
CVL Independence

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Ki-67 Peggy bombing at 6000 feet

Allied Ships
LST LST-276, Kamikaze hits 1, on fire
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Air combat over Miri.

In all I'm pleased with yesterdays actions!

Weather and uncoordination? among enemy commanders botched up Andy's plans and allowd us
to damage 2 of his carriers and destroyer 20 Mustangs as well as a few Hellcats.

At Miri Andy will have to reinforce the attacking force or bog down in the swamps, slowly being
eaten by mosquitos and Betty's I'm using local barge convoys to bring in more troops, and with 8
forts the situation has been contained.

With the Wasp TF out of action for a while, Andy may have a problem as his other cv's all seems to have
gone to the Central Pacific. If I were him I would have attempted to capture Palembang and land troops in
Java before moving to Borneo.

As the enemy is swarming towarsds the Bonins I have upgraded my defenses of the region and is ready to
punish Andy for every mistake he makes. Stay tuned, this may turn ugly

Air Combat near the Bonins:

Well, what can I say: Our CAP fighter DID meet the enemy today. No less than 370
enemy fighters sweeped the Bonins and removed ALL my CAP fighters in one attack.

Some 130 of our CAP fighters were shot down, the rest were destroyed on the ground, including
some 30 Zeke on kami missions before they could launch. In return we killed 84 enemy fighters and
4 SBDs. That's not bad, especially when you consider that Andy can't replace them

Let's continue shooting down enemy naval fighters in large numbers, ignore our losses, and see how
long Andy got guts to stay around. We still got the KB in reserve if he gets too reckless! Over the next few
days Andy has to:

1. Keep Bonin Island closed.
2. Close Iwo Jima.
3. Destroy our fleets at Iwo Jima.
4. Deal with the 400 ac of the KB.
5. Prevent us from unloading too many troops and supplies at Iwo Jima.
6. Protect himself against kamikaze attacks, attacks from the Home Islands and the Marianas.

Let's take a look at the defenses on the Bonins:

In all some 90k+ troops defends the 2 islands with 50k on Bonin and 40k on Iwo.
I'm in the process of bringing in 10k troops to Iwo Jima, Andy have to sink them within 2 days if he
is to prevent this.

I'm in the process of moving 1 Air HQ to Iwo and 1 Army HQ to Bonin Jima by air.
Bonin Island is within the 9 hex radius of the large Imperial HQ at Tokyo and should benefit from this.

Both islands have mountain terrain, and this will give us a 4x defense modifier, isn't this right?
Since non of the islands are atolls, Andy doesn't have to shock attack.

I've moved my remaining ML's to Bonin and there are now some 1000 mines there. Will place mines in Iwo Jima tomorrow.
We got an MLE present for resupply. A dozen subs are also enroute with mines.

Supply situation:

Both islands got plenty of fuel for our ships and Bonin Jima has some 61k supplies. More than enough.
The supply situation at Iwo Jima was critical 2 days ago and was as low as 2k. Today there is 21k with another 35k enroute
or unloading. Therefore I think supply will not be an issue, especially since we seem to be outside of enemy LBA range.

The brave defenders of Wake Island denies Andy the use of a lvl 4 AF that could have cost us dearly.
Maybe this crucial factor will be decisive?

Navy:

I'm moving all my ships, except some cripples, to Iwo Jima. This includes a large replenishment convoy, which I hope
Andy's aviatiors will mistake for carriers, as wel las 3 CVE's that provide a small naval attack capacity, including 9 kamikaze Zekes. There are dozens of asw vessels, msw's and transports unloading supplies. Tomorrow a large convoy with another 20 ships will arrive and start unloading troops.

The navy has its main battle fleet at Iwo Jima:
Yamato
Musashi
Muts
2 CA
1 CL
8 destroyers

The Fast Battlecruiser fleet with
2 Kongo Class battlecruisers
1 CA
1 CL
9 destroyers

Our last 3 operational battleships will support the KB and provide far cover.
The KB has been divided into the Main Body with 4 carriers:

Taiho
Zuikakau
Shokaku
Katsuragi

The Screening Force consist of 3 cvls:
Ryuho
Chiyoda
Ibuki

I am willing to sacrifice a lot of these ships and throw everything at Andy in order to foul his invasion plans.
100's of ac are being transferred from China. For now I only need fighters... Bombers can't make it through the Uber CAP for now.
If Andy lands at Bonin he will be in range of Oscar and bombers from the Home Island, and if he lands on Iwo Jima, he will be in range of Oscars and bombes from the Marianas!

Andy's biggest challenge will be:
1. Weather
2. How he distributes his fighters for CAP/Escort duties and his bombers from Ground attack/Naval attack.
3. His ability to land enough troops to capture the islands before he has to withdraw his carriers as he can't replace the
lost Hellcats and their precious pilots.

hm... i was hoped that at least 1000 AP are on those islands.... 500-700 AP can ruin Allied plans on the atolls but i afraid that this won't be enough for loong defence on the islands... i hope that i'm wrong...

re Miri air attack... do you think that losses of your ac is worth of few allied men disabled worth it? Perhaps you should stop attacks for few days and wait until enemy LR CAP is fatigued.....

oh, yes, tell Andy that he owe me a turn....

At first I thought the Bonins were atolls and didn't want to put more troops on them.
By now I have lots of reserves moving in.

The question is whether Andy can keep his CV's around long enough to unload enough troops.
He will be needing more than a 100k men. The truth is that if I place 100k troops on an island, nothing prevents Andy from landing 300k.
This happened at both Wake and Marcus - I used as many troops as I found 'realistic' and Andy used as many troops as he needed to capture
the islands.

Must admit that I didn't think Andy would go via Wake, Marcus and to the Bonins.
Seems like madness without LBA support and his precarious pilot/ac position..he seems intent on forcing a victory no matter the cost.
Winning IS very important to Andy!

I have stopped attacks on Miri, just had to inflict fatigue and disruption as these doesn't heal quickly in a malaria
base without supplies. I consider Miri safe for now. I'm only using air groups that have been assigned to this theater.

Iwo Jima: 4.5 miles long and 2.5 wide
All of the Bonin islands are 28.82 km2...

Not much more than atolls, dunno what makes them different from Wake!?

Atolls normally have lagoons and coral reefs. Islands don't normally have those. Atolls also don't have mountainous terrain. There are exceptions to the reef issue though.

Wake is a proper atoll..three small islands that really are not "improvable".. Iwo Jima is a proper island, with depth of soil, a "mountain".. etc. Atolls merely jut out of the water.. islands have proper mass and elevation to them.  I would guess if you really serious about it you could put 60,000 men on Iwo Jima..dug in like the garrison ended up like in RL.  On Wake there is only the surface to put them on and no terrain really.. and its really actually 3 small atolls..

Anyway..good luck to you. I must admit that like Pauk I was a bit surprised to see the total assault point value you have their but understand why.

What do the air groups on your carriers look like?

Its really coming down to the deciding battle now... I feel this odd nervousness.. lol.

Indeed, exciting stuff here. While the AV would benicer to be higher, I think that level 9 fort + mountain terrain has got to help a lot. I'll be watching intently as ever - this AAR is such a great tool for those of us still in the early days of the Empire.

I think the troop count is low, but then again, stack too much and Andy will just invade something else unless he's trying to build a B-29 base right off your front porch.

Is there any other reason to invade Iwo? I had always assumed that was its primary purpose - a B-29 capable airbase.

my reasoning is following...

if i must give up from certain area it is better to give up from the Marians than Bonins.... Bonins are just to close to Home islands....

but then again, i'm not sure yet (fortunatly) if such reasoning can buy you a month or so
