A few of my units didn't receive the 'all bombard' order and attacked...
A consolidated attack tomorrow.

If you achieve 0 to 1 odds all units will switch to automatically "defend"

If you achieve 1 to 1 odds or better, your units will stay on "deliberate/shock attack"

So your units stayed at "deliberate attack"

Then you set one of your units to "bombardment attack" and chose "set all to bombard"

Some of the units (armor units, eng. regiments, base forces) dont have any infantry guns and cant do bombardment attacks. If previously set to deliberate attack, they wont change to "Defense" if you ordered other unit "bombardment attack" and then "set all to bombard".
They will stay on deliberate attack.

So proper procedure, if you wish to change to bombardment attack and prevent base forces, eng. regiments and armors from deliberate attack, is:
1. "Defense All"
2. "Set all to bombard"

Yep, it is user friendly

hmm...his bombing of Rabaul makes me wonder if amphibious invasion on Kaveing is only a trick?

Can Andy invade Rabaul?

just a thought...

I find it a bit difficult to recon my own bases Alikchi! The Dinah unit that is ordered to do so doesn't always fly...and we do have
very accurate info about the enemy after fighting them for a couple of weeks

That sounds like a plausible explanation Kkoovvo (where did you pick up that name!?-) Stand down all units - THEN order all to bombard <G>
Thanx!

The thought has crossed my mind Pauk but I've not seen any concentrations of enemy ships in the area.
If he wish to blunt his remaining divisions by landing them at gunpoint in Rabaul he's welcome

There are not a lot of troops at Rabaul, but with 9 forts, a coastal defense unit + an engineer AND tank regiment it will
take a lot of effort to take it. Actually I hope he does invade, cause the alternative is to bypass... While this will deny Rabaul to him I would
prefer to wear down his offensive capabilities. The Marianas is my main defensive perimeter and the more time I can buy the better armed it will be.

Great comments guys!

I wouldnt be surprised if he will try to evacuate his troops - or can (and want) he bring another 60.000-80.000 men to capture such minor base?

If I were him I would leave that ugly place ASAP. It doesnt fit into Allied bypass strategy.

Maybe you should try to just keep the pressure on his beachhead. You aren't getting anywhere with deliberates so maybe you should bombard instead for a few days. Combine it with naval bombardment when ever you can. Then try to put in two days of air strikes (yes, I know they hurt) which might up the disruption a bit. Just don't attack with your ground troops more then once a week. Keep'em healthy and well supplied and keep him from serious resupplying efforts. In 1-3 weeks you should see some results.
I advocate agressive patience

My laptop suffered a serious hard disk attack today...no sure whether I can get it back
up and running again.

I can run WitP on my old P3 laptop but this will be a painful procedure.
Going to buy a new desktop pretty soon - updates may be infrequent until then.

Oops.

I'm not sure the allies can sustain such losses. Even if your navy and air force get eventually destroyed, which is far from being done I am not sure he will have enough landforces left to take your bases.

The Americans don't have that many troops. All in all the Americans and Australians have about 40 divisions and that many brigades or regiments. They've already lost a lot of this.

BOOM, HEADSHOT!!!
Great job. Just tell me how!? How did you get to do so much damage after such a prolonged air campaign over Rabaul. Did you keep a good supply level? Just great...
And PzB, sending bombers on Kavieng beachhead...only one or two days before you go for a deliberate attack. Don't feed the CAP regularly
Good hunting

When you consider that 20mm and even some machine guns count as a shot the 5000 shots is not absurd, I would be the Japanese fired 5000 shots the first day on Okinawa and probably many other places as well.

The thing that is amazing is the number of hits.

I'm betting that a lot of it has to do with the lack of any naval bombardment beforehand.

Holy Moley ! .. looks like a lot less barge invasions from now on :) .. maybe he imagined you evacuating more than you did .. ouch and double ouch .. Paid the price for cheap invasions there .. no bombardment or decent landing force coverage .. the HQ for marines must be tearing thier hair out ! .. one cut off and soon to capitulate and another destroyed by withering beach defences ! ..

Gen Geiger would be turning in his grave !

congrats Pzb .. again ! ..

You really seem to be kicking allied side pretty much everywhere

Good job indeed

What kind of forces you have in India? ...or do you intend to show mercy and let him recieve his British reinforcements?

Clicked on Andy's thread by mistake - panicked and closed IE asap!

The frontal assault on Rabaul was very unexpected! I didn't even identify the enemy
invasion armada. I thought Andy was 'warming the place up' with aerial bombardments and that he
would invade in a week or two.

He did have surprise on his side - he just didn't have the means to carry it out with.
Without a strong bombardment group the light invasion ships were no match for the coastal guns.

I've tried to keep Rabaul in supply and there's still some 10k supplies and 20k fuel there. Not much, but
the garrison has been stripped down so it doesn't require too much either. There were about 2000 mines before
Andy came and played around

From memory the following forces can be found at Rabaul:

2 large Naval Garrison units
Engineer Regiment
Tank Regiment
Coastal Defense Unit
Large Base Force Unit
A hodgepodge of leftovers from SNLF and Base Force units.

In all there were ca 33k troops I think. Not formidable in itself but a large base with 9 forts is a difficult nut to crack; guess poor Andy found out the hard way. Must be some 80 4-5.5 inch guns in total..tank regiments also provide a lot of firepower against light invasion forces I think.

My first reaction was to put 100 fighters back into Rabaul and order all my transport ac to fly in reinforcements
and supplies. Got several smaller combat groups that are easy to airlift and will provide Andy's bombers with numerous targets.

I don't think this setback will be too serious for Andy - more of a lesson really. He's a very aggressive player and it may not be easy for him to adjust to the demands of this game. I wouldn't write him off by far!

Got a lot of crack troops in India Aztez! Not going to let the rabbits come out of the hat unless I have to.
Guess there are some 10 divisions worth of troops behind large forts there. Would take a powerful surface group to
break them..don't have much to fear until late 44 me thinks.

Each time a victory is won I wonder if it's the last - how long can 'the fun' last!?
Thx for the support guys!

I'm still working to get my laptop up and running again...rescuing all my data.
My old P3 did manage to run the next turn, I've not finished the orders phase as everything is so slooow, but
here is the combat report!

No more enemy ships in the vicinity of the guns at Rabaul Seems like the rest are unloading on the trial to
the west. Andy will most likely march his men in. That will take time and cause massive rot to malaria. If he wants
to bring in reinforcements later on they will have to follow suit.

I've lined up several surface combat groups - seems like I will have to bombard Kavieng instead or retreat to
base.

US carriers hit Jap cruisers of Kavieng! - 12/22/2005 1:35:04 AM

This may be the last turn before Xmas as I'm reformatting my laptop tomorrow and on Friday
I will be going out of town to celebrate xmas.

Unfortunately Andy had a nasty surprise for me: He moved his carriers almost into Kavieng!! I didn't spot a
thing and still thought he kept em in PH.

The bad news:
- No clouds over the enemy carriers or my ships
- Two cruiser squadrons were maimed badly and the light cruiser Agano has been sunk and the Jintsu scuttled
- The cruisers Mogami, Suzuya and Furutaka will most likely sink in a day or two
- Another 5 heavy cruisers took heavy damage but should be able to reach Truk if subs doesn't get them
- The light cruiser Yubari and and one destroyer took moderate damage while another 3 destroyers are heavily damaged but will most likely be saved.

In all 3 heavy and 2 light cruisees as well as a destroyers are therefore write offs while another
5 heavy cruisers and 3 destroyers are out of the fight and will have to struggle back to port.

The good news:- I sent the Yamato bombardment group to Sag Sag as the enemy ships left Rabaul. The Yamato, Haruna and Kirisihima, 2 heavy and 1 light cruiser + 4 modern destroyers therefore avoided enemy attention even though they were only a few hexes away from the enemy carriers

Guess Andy will be a bit pi$$ed about this as his carriers should have targeted this extremely valuable TF!
Unfortunately no screenie...guess Andy will provide one

In all it was a good raid by Andy - told you he's very aggressive. Don't think he will keep his carriers around
for another round though. My heavy cruisers have been hurt badly, only 4 operational left in Truk now with another
3 repairing battle damage in Japan. My battleships seem blessed: all 12 are still fully operational.

My destroyers and light cruisers will take the job and the battlewagons will provide heavy firepower when needed.
I don't want to sacrifice my most valuable assets before the enemy reaches the main defensive line.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/06/43

Surface Combat

At Sag Sag my bombardment group ran into several PT boat TFs and shuffled them away.
I did send the light cruiser Noshiro and 4 dds in a surface combat TF but I guess it had a hight TF number
cause it didn't engage. Silly system: surface groups should always engage BEFORE bombardment groups.

Ouch! Any consideration to bring the KB out in strenght? Probably a deathwish, but considering his ac are now fatigued? And Hellcat is no Corsair in WitP...
On the other hand, i belive that previous experiance has taught you not to listen to my advice
good hunting

Seems like I can't have it all my way...too bad, was beginning to like it

The problem is that Andy will most likely retreat his carriers back into the Solomons and cover them under
dozens of Corsairs and T-bolts. So no, the KB is not going out. Crawling with subs as well. Air sank one by their own today
in addition to the one sunk by an asw group.

I got a large number of naval bombers ready and 200 Zekes. This force will strike at anything within 8 hexes
of Truk. Guess I will have to keep it this way from now on. All my damaged ships will be well within this umbrella.
Think it's wise to preserve as much as possible now instead of trying some desperate ploy to catch the US carriers.

I agree. You should be VERY careful about Truk. The place is your main base and we know what happens to Japanese concentrations from '43 onwards...
Cap it heavily. Not a single bomber should be allowed to break through. Otherwise, the consequeces would be dire. No need in reminding you about that. He may get cocky and try a CV raid on Truk. You never know, but get used to playing against a side with a formidable CV force now. Happy time is over.

Bad luck!

Sooner or later, you will get a spanking.

Unfortunately for those of us that prefer to play as Japs, spankings are deadly.

It's a delicate balancing act to keep your fleet as a viable threat while still projecting force where required.

You have done really well so far, walking this tightrope.

I have no doubt you will fight your defense as strongly as you have run your offense!

Small setbacks are inevitable and it's only fair that our opponents
have something to cheer about as well...as long as it doesn't happen too often

The good news is that most of our sturdy cruisers will make it back to port. The Mogami
was scuttled while the Furutaka and Suzuya settled on the seabed in Emirau's port. The Maya,
Chokai, Kinugasa, Kako and Aoba as well as the Yubari and 3 damaged destroyers will be back
in 1944!

Not bad if you take a look at the beating they took!

CA Maya, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CA Kako, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CA Kinugasa, Bomb hits 5, on fire
CA Chokai, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CA Aoba, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
CL Yubari, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Matsukaze, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Yuzuki, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Minegumo, Bomb hits 1, on fire

So Andy's xmas surprise cost us 3 heavy, 2 light and 1 destroyer (still not sunk)
A bad blow that could have been much worse!

I'll try to get even by New Years Eve

I'm glad that i well guessed about next Andy's move. I'm gonna need that in my game against tough Scott...

As for his bold move with his carriers. It seems he just like to do such daring moves - i have missed two opportunitis to caught his CVs in our game...grrrr....
