Situation Report

The Army has reached Dacca - with very high fatigue/disruption levels! I'm ordering an attack nevertheless, superior
numbers could be enough to kick Al out of this base as well. If there are 9 levels of forts - things may take a little time.

Allied bombers almost got the cve escorting my convoys today - I had 9 Zeros on LRCAP over Dimapur!
Got away with it though, and is now heading south.

Tomorrow the KB will move into range of Madras - I've ordered naval/port attacks. There may be ships in the port, and me wants them too
The invasion armada heading for Trincomalee is forming up. Also loading another division at Singapore in case I've underestimated the enemy there.
I got a little surprised when I met a lot more troops at Chandpur than expected.

Minelayers are hading for Lunga, Tassafronga and Shortland. Also sending one to Tarawa and one to Kwajalein...hope they don't run into anything big and nasty...
Need more base forces for Truk as new Daitais are moving in - and these are already enroute from Tokyo.

In all 1 ca, 3 cl and 20 dd's will make up my battlefleet. If the enemy invade another island, I will try to hit the invasion and covering forces with small vessels armed
with a lot of Long Lances.

Wobbly says that Tarawa isn't the objective of Op. Rapier - claims it is Tokyo

Can never get enough praise
Hope Wobbly gets his fair share of it too - takes two to tango!

quote:

ORIGINAL: Honda

I think India should be left as it is. There will always be someone saying the lacks this, that, etc. but that doesn't mean those changes have to be accepted. And India can be easily defended using deep defence and keeping your airforce deep inland whan faced with the KB onslought. Every measure has a countermeasure.
Anyway, great AAR. Again. But, he11, you can never have too much praise, right?

SteveV - it's a-ok that you post your comments about a what if invasion of India.
It's one of those discussions that will most likely be very diffcult to agree on....
India was not an independent state, and that complicates matters!

Hope your optimism regarding the outcome of Hangover to be correct - if not, someone else has to finish the job!-)

You are absolutely right regarding Wobbly. He's doing a grat job too. The Lunga landing is obviously a probing attack, a diversion or the best thing he could come up with in such a short notice. The only thing imminent is his counteroffensive and here he has to score bigtime. It will be another interesting clash. I wish you both play to the best of your abilities.
Good hunting.

Actually all respect to Wobbly but he over-defended Burma. Not to critisize - but a lesson for future games/players.

Now where's the next turn?

Hm, well - if Wobbly succeeds in beating me in India, his gamble in Burma will pay off. If not, he'll have to pay the price. Only time will show!

Situation Report

The deliberate attack on Dacca was a limited success - troop disruption has reached 80, and I've ordered the Army to stand
down. The forts were reduced, but I think 3 days of rest would do wonders. Crossing the river really imposed a heavy
penalty - but I got such a big numerical superiority that I'm confident that both Dacca, Calcutta and Diamond Harbour can be taken
within a month or so.

A huge strike against the airfields at Calcutta has been ordered. Droves of Allied ac there!
Zeros from Chandpur, Akyab and Rangoon will escort 120 Betties and Nells. I also want to strike the port at Diamond Harbour and
ground troops at Dacca.

The KB strike was also a limited success, the Claa that was hit by a sub earlier suffered several hits and went down after suffering a magazine explotion.
Sea Gladiators must mean that Wobbly has transferred his carrier fighters ashore.
They are a truly useless bunch, but got one Kate..!

Not much else to report, the invasion of Trincomalee is only 2, perhaps 3 days out.
The battlefleets will hit the base in 2 days - and the KB will take up a covering position east of Ceylon.

I've now got 104 Zeros and 107 Betties/Nell at Truk! Enemy recon over Tarawa and Wake - guess these are not the objectives for Rapier
Minelayers will reach Lunga tomorrow and elements of a new fleet has almost reached Truk.

15 days until Junyo arrives, the Yamato will be ready in a month. The Cvl Zuiho still got 29 sys damage and the Cve Tayio is heading back to
Singapore with 25 sys. Wobbly doesn't know that I've attached 2 cvls to the KB and only a mini cve with 10 ac is ready for ops in the South Pacific <G>

Situation Report

A quiet day - nothing much to report really. My bombers in Rangoon doesn't take off
to hit Calcutta...we try again tomorrow.

The Army rested in India and disruption went down 20 points. We'll rest for another 2 days,
then we go in for the kill.

2 battle fleets will hit Trincomalee tomorrow, and the KB will launch a limited strike against Colombo port.
The transports will not arrive for another 2 days, but that's fine. The backup division will hit Madras if
the main objective falls quickly. This is an interesting gateway into India - don't think Al got much to prevent me
from fanning out from that place.

More enemy recon in the South Pacific - minelayers have mined Lunga and will soon reach the major bases in
the Marshall Islands as well. 4 subs are spread out between Kwajalein and Tarawa. 1 PG sorties from Kwajalein, it will
search the area ESE for signs of the enemy. Got a lot of search planes in the area, but somehow I don't completely
trust them.

A fast transport group is also moving a SNLF unit from Truk to Majaloep - a base with size 4 af SE of Kwajalein.
Got woefully little troops there - and it is the perfect target for an Allied landing.

27 Sallys and 27 Kates reached Saipan today - will stay there for now.
Not much more I can do but wait and see whether Rapier is more than empty threats. Somehow I doubt it

Situation Report

Interesting day indeed! Trimcomalee is invaded - heavy bombardments fails to subdue the coastal guns though.
Will be interesting to see whether my air and sea bombardments will sufficiently suppress the defenders.
4 ca's were transferred into the landing tf - hopefully the division gets ashore without taking too many casualties.
The supporting units will arrive tomorrow and a reserve division is 6-7 days out - hopefully I can send this to Madras.

Dimapur fell to a heavy Allied counterattack led by 250 tanks! Troops marching in good order towards Dacca.
Delivered another few 800kg bombs at Diamond Harbor, want to make sure the bb's there stays until scuttled.

Disruption is down to 20-30 at Dacca, one more day of rest - then we'll kick some serious arse!-)

Lysanders? They're NOT a match for Zeros! Shot down quite a few Allied ac without suffering any air to air losses today.
5 Betties were lost to AA though. Still quiet in the Southern Pacific, and me wonders whether Al is just trying to trick me
into moving reinforcements around. Moving fighters into Tokyo in case he wants to raid it with his cv's.
Otherwise I'll only shuffle around a few garrisons and stay put.

Situation Report

Tomorrow the Army in India will attack! Allied air and bombardments takes a toll and I've ordered
LRCAP, air strikes and a deliberate attack.

Most of the troops at Trimcomalee are ashore, another transport and PG was shot up by coastal battery fire today,
but that was inevitable. Still 11k support troops left to unload, so I've only ordered a bomardment attack for tomorrow.
The battleships and cruisers will continue their bombing runs though.

The KB is almost out of fuel, a replenishment group will reach it tomorrow - and I got more on the way.
If Wobbly had struck me with his carriers now.....R.I.P.! Need to return to Singapore to take aboard supplies
and reinforcement ac.

Heavy airstrikes against Calcutta destroys quite a few Warhawks and Blenheims today, but Allied bombers are
operating out of several other bases as well. The troops that were kicked out of Dimapur will try to cut off
Dacca. If I can capture the Allied forces here - oh lala!

Still hoping to capture Trimcomalee without using the 2nd divison though. It seems like only 1/3 of a British Division
is garrisoning the place - but there may be a strong forts as well.

Very quiet in the South Pacific, minelayers have finished their work around Lunga. Others are operating out of
Kwajalein, got lots of mines there. Should have started this work months ago - so many bases in the Marshal islands
that needs attention

Situation Report

Heavy ground and air strikes in India today. I had rested my army, and disruption had been brough down to the twenties.
It went straight back up again after a single attack though! Doesn't seem to matter much whether I attack with worn out or
rested troops!? So, I've ordered heavy airstrikes on Daccas air and ground facilities. Don't want the defenders to build anymore
forts. I got such a big numerical advantage that I should capture the port within a week!

I can see Wobbly moving forces south to prevent Dacca from being surrounded. Too bad I can't seem to capture it quickly
enough....

Trimcomalee receives more heavy shells, and in a few days I'll order the first deliberate attack. I'm afraid heavy forts will claim a
butchers bill. The KB received some fuel today, more is on its way. I'm kinda stuck for the moment, but I should be safe unless
Wobbly suddenly sends in all his carriers.

The light carrier Zuiho and a damaged ca are sent ot Shanghai, Singapore has only fixed 1 sys damage in 10 days. Horrible, especially
since it's such a big port with lots of repair ships.

In China the first large scale bombardment attack was a huge success! The 240mm siege mortars are really effective. Most of the troops
are now in place, and a full scale attack will soon be ordered. We can afford a few more destructive bombardments first though!

In the South Pacific everything is quiet! I've now mined quite a few ports and reinforcements will reach Maloatap tomorrow.
I only got mines at Kwajalein, but the ml's refuses to replenish their stocks!? Anyone know whether this is a bug...

Only 10 days until the converted liner Junyo has been fully prepared for its new role as a fleet carrier. It will wait for the light carrier
Zuiho and then join a battlegroup consisting of the Yamato and Mutsu. In a few months the Hiyo will also be ready and then I will
have a new carrier division ready for action.

yup, sveint is correct. you have to restock mines in the port size 9 or 10, or in the base with MLE (which you don't have yet-hope that MLE's production is gonna work if you start game with 1.21 and upgrade to 1.3)

Yeah, I figured so - but I don't have any mines at Truk, and I can't move or use the 490 at Kwajalein

Situation Report

I've blocked the escape routh north from Dacca, but I assume that the Allied troops still can retreat west and wnw.
I should get 2 or 3-1 odds tomorrow, and in a couple of days - Dacca should fall!

In Trimcomalee and Kungchang, deliberate attacks have been ordered. The PBI is going to get it again! (Poor Bloody Infantry)

More airstrikes are ordered against Dacca while more support units are unloading at Chandpur. Tomorrow I can move in move
bombers.

The ones that are at K are ones that are defending the base. That is what the mine number means.

Yeah, I figured so - but I don't have any mines at Truk, and I can't move or use the 490 at Kwajalein
Kinda silly system eh?
...

There is no such thing as a mine stockpile. The number of mines reported in the Base display (e.g. the 400+ at Kwajalein) are those in the waters around the base to protect the harbour (as Zeta16 said).
All you need to reload mines on your minelayers is a size 9 port, e.g. Truk/Singapore/HongKong (and some supply, I guess) or an MLE in a smaller harbour.

What he said - but you do need supplies at the base. The mines loaded will decrease supplies (a little bit).

This should be the case for naval gun ammo as well.

Thanx for the input about mines gentles
I really didn't know that the number of mines reflected the number of mines actually laid down
in defense of the base. Though only Krauts would keep a mine count

Been having problem replenishing my ml's because Truk's port is size 8, building 96%.
Guess it has to become a size 9 before I can 'reload' the ml's.

Situation Report

A good day for the Empire under the sun!

In India the deliberate attack reduces fort size to 2 and achieves a 2-1 odds, causing the enemy heavy losses.
My unit that is holding the railroad north of Dacca is still in place, enemy reinforcements will first get to it tomorrow.
So we're going to a shock attack to boot the tea drinkers asap! I don't usually do this when I don't have to, but I feel a great opportunity here. The doors into India proper may finally be blasted open. I've also ordered the bulk of my divisions to pursue the enemy. (See map for sit report)

In Ceylon the first assault reduces forts to 3 and inflicts as many casualties as is suffered. This is better than I had hoped for, but I'm keeping the reinforcement convoy close for another few days. Fatigue and disruption runs high in the attacking units. The KB will refuel again tomorrow and prepare to support a possible invasion of Madang before heading back to Singapore for some R & R.

At Chandpur reinforcements are unloaded, and new air units are transferred in. I now got 67 Zeros and 135 bombers at the base, and these will hit Dacca tomorrow. Akyab has been built to a size 4 af, but the ac moved to Chandpur. One brigade at Akyab is currently embarking for Dacca - and a tank regiment is also enroute. Have to feed the fire and make sure the whole rotten structure really comes crashing down this time <G>

In China the first deliberate attack at Kungchang also inflicts heavy casualties on the enemy and reduces the forts. Another few attacks, and we can prepare to pursue the enemy north!!

Great victories are in sight everywhere as the Empires shock troops are forcing the enemy back on all fronts.
Nothing to be reported from the South Pacific. More base forces are loading for Truk, and my hold on the major bases
is substantial. Would almost wish that Wobbly would attack as I don't think the Allies are up to such a big task in early 42.

Situation Map: Dacca

Situation Report

The fall of Dacca was welcome, although not unexpected! I ordered most of my army to pursue!
Only the tank regiments managed to keep pace with the Allied troops as they headed head over heels towards
Calcutta. It will take a few days to lay siege to Calcutta, so we've ordered heavy air strikes to soften up the defenders.

When Calcutta falls, I will march west and bypass Diamond Harbour. Cut off, it will be impossible for Al to defend it without loosing all the forces he committs here.

Fuel and supplies are needed, so several huge convoys are forming up at Singapore. I'm running low on fuel, but should manage to finish the initial phases of Hangover with what I got.

I've decided that Trimcomalee will soon be captured, so the reserve division will sail to Madras. The KB has been refuelled and will hit the base as most of my bombardment units are out of shells and have to return to Singapore.

Kungchang took another heavy beating, and I suspect Wobbly will abandon it tomorrow - cause it should fall no matter what.

The heavy Allied carrier strike against Lunga was fortunate - I was afraid that Al had sent his carriers towards the Indian Ocean!! Imagine that strike going in against the KB...it would have meant the end of Hangover and all Jap offensive operations. Now I can continue operations as before: 150 Zeros and 200 bombers are currently in place at Rabaul and Truk. That should be enough to cull any rash Allied initiative in the region.

How do you plan on shoring up that northern flank in India? I'm sure he'll send forces down the rail line to attack - that's what I would do.

I certainly hope he does Want as many troops out of Karachi and Bombay as possible...

The plan is to anchor the defenses on Dimapur and Dacca on one side while holding Asansol and the base north of Diamond Harbour on the other. I'll build up a few forts, place garrisons and keep a mobile reserve on the railroad line.
No way he can defeat 50-100k troops until mid 43 at earliest.

If the road north is open, I will first send in tanks to recon enemy strength. The landing at Madras can also be reinforced, I really don't know what forces Wobbly keeps here, but he'll surely have enough fires to put out
There will only be a few size 4 airfields left in India if I succeed, and Allied airpower will be all but neutralized.

Got 2 subs with a few recon squads that will land at Karachi and Bombay before my landings here.
This is the real McCoy - if I can take these two bases, it should be possible to take all of India. If not, I'll have to try to block the Allies at Asansol and north of Diamond Harbour. The main objectives will then be to capture Burma and force the Chinese into submission.

I only have 6 months until the Allies grow to strong in the South Pacific, and then I have to send the fleet south to stop them. Hopefully I don't need them anymore after the landings at Karachi and Bombay. Don't think it will be possible to complete these operations before late July or August at the earliest.

If I fail to deliver a knockout blow in India, a prolonged defense will be difficult. He11, I'm using 90% of my army and navy in this adventure. Currently I the score is 17000 to 5000 points...and that's really all I need for a K.O - so I'll do my best to inflict as much hurt as I take in the time to come, and then force the Capitalist Alliance to the negotiation table

Difficult to foresee how things will go, so I'll stick to this plan and try to go with the flow.

Situation Report

India

Most of the Army in India moves into the hex just east of Calcutta today. Still have to wait for the support units though. Seems like the tank regiments that
pursued the retreating enemy didn't suffer a penalty for crossing the river. The divisions that followed suit certainly did though - and I have to cross yet another
river to get into Calcutta. Not looking forward to it, so I'll rest and prepare before going in. The road north to Asansol lies open, but I will wait before moving in here.
A reserve Bde and tank Regiment will be given this task. The Imp Div has also prepared well for an assault here, and can be moved in if Wobbly got more troops than I think.

The sweep ordered over Calcutta didn't take place, and I lost 8 bombers to Hurries as their escorts stayed home. When the Zeros finally did appear, all 10 defending fighters were
shot done. More Sallys and Zeros have moved into Akyab from rear bases, and daily strikes will be ordered against Calcuttas air and ground facilities. Damage to the af is already evident, and no more forts will be built as long as the engineers got other work to do.

A shock attack against Trimcomalee has been ordered, only 1 fort left and I got a 2-1 odds today.
The KB will strike Madras tomorrow, and a full division will storm ashore. 3 heavy cruisers have been included in the landing force, and hopefully I don't get shot to pieces.
I need engineers - and I plan to move a regiment from Trimcomalee as soon as this base has been secured.

Central Pacific and China

I'm going to pick up aviation regiments from Borneo and other bases that have lost their strategic value as the enemy has been chases away.
These will be moved to India and Ceylon. A 15 ship fast transport group including 2 heavy cruisers, dd's and apd's are loading a SNLF unit at Singapore, and will move to Truk.

The fall of Kungchang leaves only 2 Chinese bases in northern China. The army will rest and prepare before moving north - I hope to encircle
and destroy the entire enemy army around Lanchow.

South Pacific

I gave the situation in the South Pacific some consideration again today. Wobbly is still busy pounding Lunga into the stoneage, and no sign of this so called Rapier! As long as Al keeps his carriers in theatre, he got the initiative, and I have to prepare as best I can for any potential onslaught.

The following air units are available in the South Pacific (offensive):

183 Zeros
158 naval bombers (Betties and Nells)
78 level bombers (Sallys and Helens)
33 Kates
= 452 ac

A regiment from the 19th Division has been released from the Kwantung Army, and is currently being loaded for Truk.
I have really few large inf units - and this is a weakness.

Situation Report

With the capture of Trimcomalee a amount of fuel and supplies was captured! 100000 supplies and 95000 fuel
What a scoop! That was exactly what I needed, my offensive can now continue at full pace.

Wobbly did march his troops out of Trimcomalee before it fell, but that's ok. I'm not going to invade Colombo anyway, hoping to turn it into a self sufficient Allied POW camp My Zeros and bombers will prevent any supplies from going in - I've already moved 40 Nells, 18 Zeros, 18 Sallys and 8 Mavis into the base. Moving ships from Oz to India will now be very dangerous.

The inivasion of Madras has commenced - and even though several transports were hit by defensive fire, the bulk of the division has already been landed. Stringbags (Swordfish) tried to hit my ships, and succeeded in torpedoing the heavy cruiser Haguro. System damage is around their 30's. They paid a horrible price though and the transports weren't hit.
A engineeer regiment is already being loaded at Trimcomalee, and will be unloaded in a few days. The native Indian troops at Madras shouldn't be able to halt my storm troopers!

Heavy bombing raids against Calcutta destroys many Allied ac on the ground, and no less than 40 of them were destroyed in the air and on the ground today. Japanese losses amounts to 13 ac. The army has been ordered to move into Calcutta, and should lay siege to the base in a few days. No fewer than 25 enemy units have been spotted there, and I believe Wobbly will try to make a stand here. So the fighting will be hard, but I'm confident. The hail of steel that will hit the base from the air will make it difficult to defend it against superior numbers and quality.

The Bay of Bengal has been re-christened and should from now on be known as The Bay of New Japan (see map)
Mango madness is already evident in the High Command as Hangover has proven more successfull than anyone had even dared to hope. I do hold a sober eye on front in the south though.

In Dacca, the resources there will ease the problems of supplying the troops in India. I'm planning to withdraw 2 divisions from the army in Burma, move them to Singapore and then hit Karachi and Bombay. I don't have enough forces to hit both at once, so 4 divisions will be employed in two rounds in the final phase of Hangover. If these attacks are successfull, India will no longer be part of the British Empire

WOW! Amazing! This AAR is coming every day better! Keep it up!

Just a question: how about the flow of oil and resources from DEI and SRA to Japan Industries? How's are your stocks? Has the armament/veicles production incresed in the last months of war?

Thanx for the praise, hope you'll all be with me if/when the going gets tough

I've been moving huge amounts of oil and resources from DEI and SRA to Japan lately. Have to check the actual
stocks and production numbers next time I get a turn. They have remained rather stable as far as I've been able to see.
Ordered some rather costly increased in ac and industry factories. This drained a lot of the supplies available on the Home Islands, but no red numbers.

I desperately needed an additional 100k fuel and supplies for Hangover, and somehow Wobbly heard me and decided to help me out. Jolly nice chap

My two cents:
Don't go for Karachi. I say consolidate Asansol (sp?), Diamond Harbor and the base next to it, then build up forts and sit tight. You'll have a strong line in a malaria free zone that can be defended without using those 4 divisions slated for the next phase. Take those 4 Divisions and use them in the South Pacific to stem the tide there...

So if you take Karachi are the British totally gone then? I mean that you won´t be required to have the slightest garrison there?

Thx for the advice Madflava...appreciate your input. This is a very important crossroad - a lot has been won, and everything now hangs in the balance. Got 17400 points to 5400. Need a 4-1 score on 1/1-43 to win right!?

I'm still kinda set on attempting to eliminate the Brits from the war altogether though!
Strv - if I capture both Karachi and Bombay, the Brits will receive no more reinforcements or supplies.
I still would need a rather sizeable garrison, but it would be highly unlikely that the Yanks would come all the way to India.
Allied port bases are so vulnerable to my battleships - they deliver such punishing bombardments that it becomes almost impossible to defend them without aircover. This would also be the case with Karachi and Bombay, right!

Imagine what scoop it would be to destroy all the Allied troops in India! It would mean certain victory.
If I don't attempt and succeed with this, it will be very difficult to win a prolonged war.

Only 2-3 more months will be needed to pull this off, and even if I fail - the Allies will have to face the full fury
of the entire Fleet and parts of the army in the south before the USA has really gotten its war production into high gear.
(Hope I never have to witness this.) I'm confident that lost ground in the south can be made good again.

When I get both the Yamatos and the 2 Junyos, the fleet will be strong enough to take on anything the Yanks can throw at me in late 42.

Would like to hear more about why I shouldn't go for the K.O. blow in India Madflava - need a month to prepare for any further operations, and in the meantime I will carefully consider the cons and pros.

Are you going to continue playing if India is taken?

Also, how's your production (naval) going? Other than the Junyos + Yamatos, anything coming up?

Ok...
Pros on taking Karachi:
Brits out of the war
Almost certain auto-victory
No worries on the Burma front until late late 1944.

Cons:
KB in an identifiable location
Ground forces committed to India
Massive surface support needed
Fuel/Supply expenditures (especially considering the distances from Japan)

I think the best bet Japan has is to grab everything possible as fast as possible, then fortify like mad. Establish large mobile reaction forces and wait for the Allies to show their hand. When they do, smash the invasion with everything you have - do that once or twice and you've set the Allies back a long, long time.

I don't see the British as much of a threat until 1944, so I don't think they need to be knocked out of the war. Remember historically the line was at the Kohima/Imphal area until 1944. You've already bumped the line back a long ways. Even if he can get an offensive going in 1944, he's got a ton of ground to make up. You're already ahead of the curve.

I think Japan blew it in the Pacific by defending everywhere at once - too thinned out. I think you pick a group of bases that become your strongholds - Truk/Kwaj/Rabaul/Kendari etc. Have outposts in front of those bases that can be reinforced quickly. Use them as tripwires and smash whatever force tries to come after the outposts.

Your situation now allows you to shore up a strong defensive front in India and release a ton of troops to Pacific duty. Instead of Naval Garrisons as Japan had originally on their islands, you'll have divisions - shock attacking against a dug in division on an Atoll will kill a lot of Marines. Plus add in your counter strikes and you've got the makings of an Allied slaughter.

Sorry for the long post - just trying to organize my thoughts. I usually play as the Allies. I know if I was your opponent and I knew KB and most of the surface forces were in the IO, I'd be running around like a kid in the candy store elsewhere. I always wondered what would have happened to Germany if Hitler hadn't invaded Russia. Think of all the forces that would have released... I'd worry if I were you that India might become a Russia.

If you're certain you can take Karachi, I guess I say go for it. If you're not certain, I would stop and consolidate. It's an expensive expedition otherwise.

One last thing: I know in my current PBEM as the Allies, I'm having a heart attack because I don't know where KB is. I think I do, but I'm not more than 55% positive. I'm worried it will show up passing Canton Island to hit convoys... Or coming back to PH, or showing up between SF and PH, or leading an invasion of Noumea... So I'm slowing everything down and escorting the hell out of everything - right now your opponent doesn't have to do that. Another benefit of stopping in India is he loses KB and gets that nervous sweat I have right now...

After all this, why would you need the KB around India? Mini KB + 1-2 normal CV should be enough. Other CVs can guard against any invasion in the Pacific.
