You stole that from red storm rising

they supposedly had helos on board that were related to the name of the ship. The battleaxes helo was called "Hatchet"

OF course like shipname "Broadsword" myself.

Guess you could have a Scottish Freighter called claymore. Would be a "Sheep Carrier" with cargo bound for Australia.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also used the name Akagi and Yamato. Yamato has destroyed by a computer virus...

Vanguard is my choice for best name. Pity her constuction was delayed (for various reasons), but she was available anyway in 1946, it would be nice to see her in a scenario that extended into 1946.

No one matched the Japanese in their ability to give evocative names. Those destroyers are all cool:
Haziness Diffusing Moonlight
Wind of an Arrow Flight
White Clouds on a Mountain Peak
Mist of Flowers
The Germans should have taken a lesson. Z.27, sheesh...!
The RN has had five Black Princes.
The USN had destroyers named Craven and Coward. Is that like a Boy Named Sue?

Yamato means old name of Japanese state(south of Kyoto area, south east of Osaka).
Believed as one of origin place of Japanese people.
Yamato is almost same meaning as Japan.

Just like a Yamato is Japan, Japan is Yamato.
"Yamato Damashii" means Japanese soul(like a Samurai spirits though little bit different feelings).
"Show the Yamato Damashii--Yamato Damashii wo misero" this word is used very often when Japanese men fight against foreign enemy(not only war but also sports, such as a olympic).

Domo Aragato Tomo.

Hope my japanese isnt too bad.

I think I misunderstood or confused the Yamato with another Japanese Ship.

Im sure many other posters here might ask you what other Japanese ship names mean.

Of course we could so the same for oversea posters.

Didn't Churchill have that one named for Lady Astor (sp)?

My favorite all time ship name is not in WitP, as it was a French ship of the Revolutionary era: "Sans Culottes". I can translate if necessary, but I'll let your imagination go to work.

British and French names during 1700-1800s were phenomenal. My all-time favourites..."Royal Oak" (as the 74gun 3rd rate) and Jellicoe's Marlborough class flagship "Iron Duke" (no offence to Wellington but it is a great name for a dreadnought BB).

Sans Pareil is also a fabulous name.

Worst. Naming warships for flowers...HMS Pink just sucks. Ask Steve Buschemi.

I imagine a submarine named Flasher must have a crew wearing trench coats.

Rather harmless, compared to the RN:

HMS Spanker
HMS Desperate
HMS Urge
HMS Swallow

I was thinking that exact eposode, Enterprise attacks four similar ships, thought the one hit hardest was Lexington, too bad these old shows are not archived online.. maybe I can find a script .

Yes, another Star Trek Geek here.

Episode is called "The Ultimate Computer". Ships were, Hood, Lexington, Potempkin, Excalibur. Oh and the robot ship was called the Wodin.

Kirk out.

For you Star Trek fans, there was also a Yorktown I believe.

Anyways, I think my favorite ship name is the AK Wallingford. I think of the programmers working late at night thinking, "We need another name for a transport." as they are drinking some coffee in their office. They look at the coffee machine and see Wallingford coffee. "I got it, let's name it Wallingford!"
