well, my system temperatur is pretty ok even after overclocking (i overcloked only via bios and not by doing something on the mainboard).

MB temp: 87F or 31C.
CPU temp: 105F or 41C.

also, i removed the german driver for my graphic card and also the german directx client and replaced them by the english version.

there are realy no more things to try imho.

anyway, i will test the game now after this tweaking and if it runs without "lag" then i will name my biggest carrier "USS Mr.Frag".

Have you tried running in in Windowed mode? Add a "-w" to the command line for the WitP Quick Start shortcut and it should load up in a window. I have one machine here that runs it faster in a window, if it runs full screen it's definitely slower, but the specs on that machine are nowhere near yours. I did try it on a 2500 Barton and had no lag at all, so I think we are really dealing with a system-specific setting, could be BIOS, driver, other software. Just to tick off a list of things I would try if this were my machine:

- Close all background programs and tasks (you can do this through Windows system tools or programs like EndItAll)
- Update all drivers
- Check all video and sound settings, reset to defaults
- Check all BIOS settings, remove overclocking, set to compatibility defaults
- Update chipset drivers
- Check hard drive settings for performance
- Check Windows settings for additional slowdowns from things like System Restore if running XP
- Run some benchmarks (like those from Madonion.com) to check memory, video, CPU performance and compare to similar systems using their online results browser, this can help spot any issues

I too am seeing delays at the same points. Not sure if it's map related or something to do with accessing the internal data tables. I have a pretty fast system: 2.4 Gig with 1 Gig of DDR Ram and a 128Meg Video card, XP Pro, good drivers - even an 8 meg cache on my drives. Also Operating System and Swap files on different drives. Damn thing will run an infinite loop in under 10 seconds but takes 3-4 seconds to respond after task force creation. I just can't see how it is hardware related as so many people report it.

I am playing a modified scenario with most of the unofficial graphics upgrades - maybe double the original number of ship bmps. Anyone else?

seems that we share the same problem.

this 3-4 seconds pause when creating a TF is the main problem. i for my part could live with the 1-2 seconds it takes to set targets or homebases.

thanks. i dloaded enditall and closed all possible tasks and programs before starting WITP. after that, i run a memory optimizer and had 433 MB free RAM before starting WITP.

- Update all drivers

ok, my sound-driver (onboard NVIDIA nForce) is from 26/03/2004. the latest available driver from NVIDIA.

my MPU-401 compatible MIDI-device is from 01/07/2004. seems to be too old, but i didnt found a new driver on "www.windows.com".

floppy-driver is from 01/07/2001 but i dont think that this is causing the problems.

CD-ROM driver is from 01/07/2004 too, but i run the game from HD and not from the CD.

graphic card-driver is from 15/07/2004. the latest NVIDIA driver (english).

HD-driver is from 13/01/2004. again, thats the last available driver from NVIDIA. primery channel is set to ultra DMA 5- ultra 100. secondary channel (CD-ROM) is set to ultra DMA 2- ultra 33.

i cant find a western digital driver for my serial ATA drvice (WDC WD800BB-00CAA1). i tried it on the western digital HP, on windows driver homepage and on several driver websites, but couldnt find a new driver. my current driver is from 01/07/2001.

mouse-driver is from 03/06/2004 (microsoft USB wheel mouse optical).

- Check all video and sound settings, reset to defaults.

i have my graphic card setting for more preformance, but i can change it to default to try if that helps.

- Check all BIOS settings, remove overclocking, set to compatibility defaults

ok, did it. the setting are "optimal" now.

- Update chipset drivers

what do you mean? BIOS or MB? the mainboard drivers are the latest nForce drivers. also, i made a ASUS bios update right now.

well, my system is totaly reinstalled (after formating the HD) and there are only very few programs installed on it.

- Run some benchmarks (like those from Madonion.com) to check memory, video, CPU performance and compare to similar systems using their online results browser, this can help spot any issues.

ok, dloaded the 03 version and did the benchmark. (PCmark04). cant compare the results for some reason, but got 1975 points.

seems that i have to live with this "bug", "feature", "system problem" or whatever is causing this problem.

I still think it is an nVidia-related issue (I have GeForce MX200). The question is, what is spinning? The game or external code? Either some DirectX or whatever call is returning a result that confuses the game or it is the DirectX or whatever call that is itself getting confused. I hope that makes sense ... :-)

Is there any "profiling" software available for Windows? What I mean is something that can show you what EXE, DLL or lower level lump of code is using the CPU at any one point, possibly even to the extent of which "system" calls are involved. My Windows dev skills are almost non-existent I'm afraid.

The last time I had to take my PC in for work (which is rare), they installed a program that does this. Iarsn TaskInfo2000. No idea where you could get it but google search might find it.
