I'm a fairly experienced UV fan and have recently purchased WitP. WOW!!!!! I can only once again sing the praises of Matrix, GG, and all the others who have produced this monumental fantastic game.

I like to play Imperial Japan mostly as they are truly 'up against it', and are much more of a challenge, although I am in awe of some of their marvellous ships

I'm having a problem though with where to start, and getting a turns logical sequence in my head for 'things to do/check/implement. I've read the rules obviously ( mostly runs like UV in most cases ), but being old and feeble minded, I'm having a problem formulating a check list after the Pearl Harbour historical turn.

I'm fairly up on the actual history of the Pacific War, but are there any experienced players out there who can point me in right direction??? And when will the patch ver1.3 be generally available ( I have 1.21 )??

Any help will be greatly appreciated fellas

I would simply suggest that you run as the Allies in a full campaign, one day turn, until early / mid Jan 42.

Than do the same thing as Japan.

This will give you a good idea where everything is at, and what capibilities your various assets have.

From there, as Denisonti so wiseiy suggest, jump in, the water is fine.

You've got to be kidding me!!!!

PBEM SC15 ....I'm a rookie ( at the moment ), although I'm a pretty mean IJN UV player ( well I like to think I am!! )

I will look at that SC against the AI and see how I fair then. Perhaps I was getting too excited in trying to bite off more than I can chew

Why are you offering to hammer me into the ground??

Well I can’t speak to the Japanese as I haven’t tried to tackle them yet. I’m a control freak kind of player who refuses to let the AI do anything for me, so I’ll hold off on Japan until I get the Allies down pat first. Japan’s economy will take some massive thought and planning and I don’t want to even attempt to tackle it until I have a solid grasp of the entire game, including the late war years, so perhaps in 6 months or so I’ll look into playing Japan.

I tend to break the map down in my head by areas of operation as I plot a turn, I tend to think of and treat each area as its own mini game within the larger scope of the entire campaign. I start in India, and then move on to Burma, Malaya, China, DEI, Philippines, Australia, Southwest Pacific, South Pacific, Central Pacific, North Pacific and finally the West Coast. I complete all planning in a specific area before moving on to the next area on my mental checklist.

I then break down the turns planning into three stages of review. Air, land and finally naval. I guess I do this because that’s how the interface in the old PacWar game forced me to do it, and I’ve done it that way in UV and now WitP.

Finally before executing the turn, I review Signet and combat reports to help spark my memory of any forgotten thoughts from the previous resolution phase. Signet isn’t very useful, but every once in a while there is a juicy bit of info contained there, so try and make it part of your turns regiment else you’ll miss the infrequent helpful alerts as you begin to forget it’s available. I initially did this and had to retrain myself to make it a normal part of my turn.

Well that’s a general overview on how I approach tackling this beast as the Allies, hope it helps. Japan has a very complex economy that you need to work into your turns regiment somewhere. I’d probably handle the economy first since it will draw from naval assets in most every theatre of operation, so better to plot those assets first then to have to come back and change naval plots later in the turn to free up needed assets for your economy.

Jim

Actually you could do a lot worse than to just start scenario 15 as the allies (AI on hard or very hard), let the Japanese thrash you, and try to salvage something on the fly from the resulting wreck. If you are overwhelmed and confused, well, how much more realistic does it get than that? And there's nothing like makee learn when it comes to, well, learning.

Well, I was joking, although that is exactly what I did. (through April 42 as Allies)

I play exclusively as the Japanese. The first thing you need to do is decide wether you are going to play PBEM. There are alot of things that you see and get reports on playing against the AI, that you will not get playing PBEM.

Take a look at Lemurs scenario 15 mod located at Spooky's site. The current version is 4.0. It is the superior PBEM full war scenario IMO.

I only play Lemurs versions in PBEM, so I am very rusty on the stock scen 15. Most of the fundementals are the same though.

Take some time and just study the map and learn where everything is. Learn where the oil/resource bases are that you need to capture. TAKE NOTES. They will pay off in the long run.

Prepare for some serious order giving the first dozen times you do turn 1. Run a bunch of them against the AI with different strategy's. Mainly just to get used to first turn load rules, how far you can move etc.

It used to take me anywhere from 16-24 hours straight to do a turn 1 for the Japanese. Now due to alot of writers cramp I can do a turn 1 from scratch in about 8 hours. After a week or so, the map will not be as daunting nor the amount of units (you will pray for lots more).

Learn the production side of things. Very important. Again TAKE NOTES about what to change and where.

I would recommend Lemurs version above all else, but the notes for his version will not work for the stock scenario 15. Too many changes. And vice versa.

Ask any questions you want though.

Fellas, you are the tops. Thanks for all your advice, and I have taken note of all your posts and will begin advancing the Co-Prosperity Sphere in bite size chunks.

I'll probably take a few months getting used to the game ( I can't wait ) and then I'll be looking for PBEM opponents

Thanks again, this forum is great for getting advice!!!
