You're still using P-40B's in August 1943? There must be a prohibitive upgrade cost.

Capt. Harlock.....Terminus is exactly right. I kept the P-40Bs in India for their long range capabilities. I had finished bombing every port/airfield/oil/resource within range of Akyab several months ago so my SEAC airforce has been out of a job until I started the recent Burma offensive. I wasnt using my fighters here for a while so I forgot to upgrade when the P-40N came out.

Having said that, the P-40B appears to be obsolete against frontline Japanese fighters such as the A6M3a and Tojos. On the next day of the air battle over Moulmein, Japan reinforced with a fresh daitai of Tojos and shot up my P-40Bs and even my P-40Ns pretty bad. I rotated in some fresh squadrons of P-40Ns and even resorted to sending over 100 heavy bombers against his fighter bases. My bombers went in unescorted and got shot up a bit but at least they fatigued his fighters enough that my P-40Ns could escort the naval bombers successfully.

The air/sea fighter/bomber battle over Moulmein harbor raged for 4 days with heavy losses on both sides until 12 of the 13 ships in his transort TF were sunk. This did not however prevent Japan from reinforcing Burma with the 48th Infantry Division.

I think I will maybe have to ship some P-38s over to India to get the air superiority I need in this theatre.

SITUATION REPORT: 8-21-43

SWPAC:

The long awaited assault on the surrounded Japanese forces at Finschafen commenced on 8/17/43 as the USA 37th Infantry Division and the 198th RCT annihilated the remaing 6000 Japanese defenders. The only pocket of Japanese resistance left in SE New Guinea are the surrounded troops at Dobodura and these will be liquidated over the next 2 weeks.

SEAC:

By successfully reinforcing Burma by sea with the 48th Infantry Division the Japanese now outnumber Allied forces east of the Irrawaddy River by 80,000+ to 40,000. Many more Allied troops are on the way but if Japan presses its current temporary advantage they could recapture Pagan and push the Allies back across the Irrawaddy River.

Meanwhile, the hundreds of SEAC bombers based at Akyab, Chandpur and Imphal are pounding frontline Japanese units on a daily basis.

SITUATION REPORT: 8-23-43 RINGS AROUND RABAUL

With the completion of the SOPAC offensive up the Solomon Island chain and into the Bismarcks and the SWPAC offensive along the New Guinea coast and into the Admiralty Islands the battle for the south Pacific is virtually over. The great Japanese naval and air base at Rabaul and indeed all of New Britain Island is now surrounded by a ring of interlocking Allied airfields. CINCPAC is currently unsure if New Britain Island will ever be invaded but it will definitely be bombed into oblivion for the duration of the war. One last mop operation remains at Dobodura in New Guinea and then the next great offensive thrust will be launched.

WAR PLANS: FALL 1943

SWPAC:

General MacArthur plans to have SWPAC leapfrog up the coast of New Guinea towards the Phillipines. Some smaller Japanese bases will be bypassed but all major bases will be captured or reduced.

SOPAC:

SOPAC will assist SWPAC in the New Guinea Campaign and will build up bases in the Bismarck and Admiralty Islands to conduct a bomber offensive against Truk.

WAR PLANS: FALL 1943

SEAC:

SEAC currently is conducting a 2 pronged offensive into Burma to recapture Rangoon. One thrust is moving along the coast from Akyab and the other has moved through central Burma and Mandalay. Eventual objective is to recapture all of Burma and establish forward bases for bombing of Indochina.

It is far too early to have Rangoon in Enemy hands! I am dismayed and annoyed by the rapidity of the fall of Mandalay and Pagan. The 48th Div is indeed approaching the front and will stabilize the area with any luck. For now, limited objectives to be pursued will be to establish a defensive line along the Irrawaddy. This will mean retaking Pagan, and perhaps retaking Mandalay although currently it is outside of the scope. Lashio must be retaken as well. Mandalay is only a necessity to prevent yet another base as close to me as Akyab.

I was wondering if we were going to get some commentary from the Japanese side. Congrats to both for posting your plans for the Burma theatre. (Mind you, there's not much that couldn't be guessed already by a smart opponent.)

A suggestion to Adm. Nimitz: you might want to consider P-47 Thunderbolts as well as or even instead of P-38's. IMHO, they are as good at dogfighting and have superior ground attack abilities.

SITUATION REPORT: 8-28-43 NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF HANSA

Hansa was captured today after 3 days of heavy fighting and perhaps the biggest Allied SNAFU of the war. Recon of Hansa on 8/22/43 showed it to be undefended so the 197th RCT went ashore on 8/25/43 expecting a "cakewalk". No aerial or surface bombardment was given. Sometime between 8/22/43 and 8/25/43 a Japanesae base force arrived at Hansa and was dug in awaiting the Americans. The amphibious assault was a disaster.....several DDs and LSTs were hit and heavily damaged. The amphibious TF had to evacuate hastilyon 8/26/43 with the 197th debarked but short on supplies. All bombers and surface forces in the New Guinea area were then directed at Hansa...7 BBs and 500+ bombers. Hansa was finally secured on 8/28/43 and the Japanese base force was last seen retreating towards Madang.

ALL future amphibious operations from now on WILL be proceeded by a maximum bombardment regardless of the amount of opposition expected.

Japan Honours Capt. Saito of the CVL Ryujo

The carrier Ryujo, damaged over a month ago off Admiralty Islands slips into drydock at the Okayama yards. The Captain has been elevated to the ranks of the immortal heros of the IJN for his feats of seamanship guiding the severely wounded carrier out of harms way, and then the incredible distance home.

Due to secrecy restrictions the exact damage to the carrier will not be shown in by photos... this photo however was released to the public earlier today...

I rechecked the combat reports and saw that my land based air hit CVL Ryujo with 4 bombs the 1st day and then the Avengers landed 3 torpeoes on her the 2nd day. CVL Ryujo must have gotten some pretty good damage control die rolls to have survived.

And I bet that she looks like a piece of swiss cheese.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-1-43

SEAC:

The air war rages on in Burma as Japan seems to have an advantage in long range fighters and the Allies have a massive advantage in bombers. Japan has been conducting fighter sweeps over Akyab with some success and the Allies have responded with bomber attacks on Japanese fighter bases. Losses have been high on both sides and fatigue and morale loss has taken its toll. Thunderstorms today threaten to ground most aircraft in the theater.

SWPAC: NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN

With the arrival of the 192nd USA Tank Battalion and the 9th Australian Infantry Division at Dobodura the order has been given for an all out shock attack tomorrow. This assault will follow a massive air and sea bombardment and is directed against the last Japanese pocket of resistance left in SE New Guinea.

The new airbase at Hansa became operational today as the 1st groups of F4U-1 flew in.

Are you going to attempt a landing on New Britain? Nicely executed hopping up New Guinea, btw.

Ive been out of town over the weekend so I apologize for the belated update.

Alikchi...

Thanks for your comments. From a strategic/operational point of view, I do NOT plan on invading New Britain Island. I am also trying to reconstruct the historical campaign as closely as I can(difficult to perform against human opponents) so I have always intended to isolate Rabaul and also Truk instead of invading them. With 30,000+ troops entrenched at Rabaul the Allies would suffer huge casualties and ship losses in an invasion(as I did at Port Moresby). New Britain Island is surrounded and should be about out of supply by now. Rabaul is the only base of consequence on the island. The original Japanese commander never enlarged the other 4 bases on the island.....they are all size 1 or 2 bases so represent no offensive threat to future Allied operations.

Having said that, if I have a problem achieving a 2:1 point superiority later in the game I may invade those bases. Interestingly, Rabaul is worth 76 points to Japan and Truk is only worth 27 points.

Go figure.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-13-43 SEAC:

Things are starting to heat up in Burma. Japan stages an attack at Pagan only to be repelled with heavy casualties. The 22nd Australian Brigade crosses the Irrawaddy River downstream of Pagan and is forced to immediately shock attack the defenders and suffers heavy losses.

Chinese shock attack at Lashio forces the Japanese to retreat from the city.

Thunderstorms ground most of the Allied air force and more bad weather is predicted for tomorrow.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-14-43

SEAC:

With an assist by RAF Bomber Command, SEAC makes it across the Irrawaddy River in force downstream from Pagan. The 18th UK Infantry Division, 15th Indian Brigade and the 22nd Australian Brigade get 8:1 odds in a shock attack on the Japanese defenders and force them to retreat towards Rangoon. Men and materiel will continue to pour across this bridgehead... perhaps the most significant breakout in the SE Asian theatre of the entire war. The Allies now have a chance to cut off and destroy in detail the entire IJA force in Burma!

tho by taiking that rail junction uve reduced the amount of supplies theyre getting

u should take rangoon asap and bring in reinforcements

Marky...thanx for your comments. I hope to capture Rangoon ASAP but there are 30,000+ IJA troops entrenched there. I have 8 seige artillery regiments working their way through the jungle from Akyab right now but it will be a couple more weeks before they arrive.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-20-43

NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF WEWAK....D-DAY MINUS ONE

Allied assault forces will hit the beach at Wewak tomorrow. Hundreds of bombers are already flying to soften up the target. Intell reports 20,000 IJA entrenched there.

Coodinating with the assault on Wewak, USN Fast CV TFs are making a wide sweep to the east of the New Guinea to prevent interference from IJN CV TFs.

SEAC:

Allied forces invest Rangoon and will begin their preliminary bombardments tomorrow. Over 120,000 IJA troops are cut off by the massive SEAC "right hook" down the coast from Akyab while 8 Chinese Divisions fix 35,000 IJA in place at Pagan.

Meanwhile, RAF Bomber Command begins to work over Rangoon defenses.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-21-43

NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF WEWAK

Following the bombardment of 8 BBs, 10 CAs and hundreds of bombers, the USMC 1st and 3rd Divisions, US Army 43rd and Americal Divisions, 8th Australian Tank Regiment and 4 Artillery regiments stormed ashore at dawn today. The 20,000 defenders seemed too stunned to resist and an all out shock attack is ordered for tomorrow.

SEAC:

The 14th Indian Division and the 16th Indian Brigade force their way across the Irrawaddy River SE of Mandalay with an audacious shock attack on the IJA 55th Infantry Division. Surprisingly although the numbers of troops involved were roughly equal the Allies achieved 8:1 odds on the IJA.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-24-43

SEAC:

The Japanese defensive line appears to have been shattered in Burma as both SEAC offensive thrusts achieve complete breakthroughs. The coastal offensive has captured Rangoon and killed over 14,000 IJA there over the last 2 days. The vanguard of this offensive has paused on the banks of the Salween River waiting for re-supply before storming Moulmein. The 18th UK Division meanwhile shock attacks across the Salween farther upstream and storms into Rahaeng.

The central Burma offensive has crossed the Irrawaddy in 2 places. The 16th Indian Brigade and the 14th Indian Division shock attack the IJA 55th Division out of their way and are about to envelop Pagan. Meanwhile, over 50,000 IJA are cut off in eastern Burma.

CENTPAC: USN FAST CARRIER RAID

The largest concentration of carrier power to date......8 CVs and 4 CVLs with over 900 AC...sortied from Guadalcanal to both cover the Wewak invasion and strike Japanese shipping in port at Palau. After refueling yesterday, the CV TFs made a high speed run-in to Palau overnight and launched naval raids on Japanese shipping in the morning. 1st strike was a fighter sweep over Palau to prevent any interference with the operation:
