The Battle of Wake, V4.0 continues. Up to now it is a flagrant demonstration of the futility of Level Bombing against enemy TFs. It is also great proof of the effectiveness of Coastal defence guns. I am pretty sure that his Warspiting Majesty can take Wake if he wants to, but it does look as it will cost him some. US submarines continue to be plagued by bad torpedoes but Dutch subs do a great job.
Makin invasion continues, but now an enemy TF is seen in Nauru. What does he have up his sleeve?
In Timor, an enemy bombardment TF does its thing, and then (perhaps the same) TF is attacked by B25s. No effect of course, but this armed recon reveals two BBs, a CA and a CL. His Warspiteness has some designs in the Timor area; hmmmm.

True, come to think of it, I don't remember what CD units I sent to Wake. (Whatever was available)
Actually that should be the title of this thread "Whatever was available defence"

Oi and and company received very little damage from coastal defences. I presume the units in question are equiipped with pee shooters.
Operation Aokage KAI is now underway sans the 20th division. It is still en route from Korea, but should land by the time hostilities are ended. Then on to deal with those American forces at Tarawa and Makin.
Plans around Timor are shaping up well as the Allies have pulled everything out of range of my G4M1s which were causing some havoc in his ranks. This has left everything open for my battle group to bombard where they please.
Encountering some difficulties in China where the trails are leaving my forces stretched out and unable to advance on Kungching at the same time.
Rabaul is quiet as I build up my forces there and attempt to keep my troops at Gili supplied.

Wake 4.0 continues. This time, the Japanese carry out an extensive preparation. Only allied subs prove effective

With Makin taken, operation spotted dog is in the mopping up stage.
A new BB seen in the Timor area BB Yamato; not good news.
Air battles over Rangoon continue. Japan seems to be conducting a holding war in Burma. It looks like its only objective there was to cut the Burma road. This may mean he is gathering forces for an attack on ... Timor, or perhaps he plans a move on PM. That would explain his concerned effort to shut down the airfield there. (The Beaforts there have thwarted his plans more than once)

Nice to have them defeated in China. Maybe they are outgrowing their supply!

Major events for the day:
Wake 4.0 continues, with more troops landing. Some catalinas try a night attack on a Battleship, with no success. A japanese shock attack is repelled, and is followed up by an allied counterattack, which caused severe losses to the Japanese, but failed to drive them off the beach.
Makin has been taken, but the Japanese stubornly hold on to whatever rocks they are still holding on to.
Port Moresby Airfield endured its daily plastering, but remains functional, thanks to the heroic efforts by the allied engineers. A Japanese cruiser force decided to bomb Buna; several Coconut trees were damaged.

The landing at Wake will be studied at the Imperial War College for generations. It is truly a debacle of grand proportions. Several mistakes have compounded to cause the landing to fail, and in all probability doom the 6 divisions of men involved.
The first mistake occurred at Marcus Island, where the invasion force assembled. For some reason only half the divisions embarked for the voyage and no supplies were brought with the men.
The second mistake involved the ordering of the transports to follow one particular transport to facilitate the divisions landing at the same time. In theory this was great; however, the lead task force arrived ahead of the others (despite being the slowest) and finished early. The main body then followed the TF back to Marcus leaving only one division landed on the first day. This division bravely attacked on its own and was mauled.
The error was quickly corrected and the other divisions landed on the second day. However, these were not able to fully disembark which resulted in the under strength divisions making two assaults on the atoll despite orders to defend at this point.
The last mistake was mistiming the arrival of the 20th division, which is probably going to land on the fourth day of the invasion.
All this has lead to the disruption of the landing divisions, who are all missing a large portion of their combat forces and out of supply. The only division that has its entire strength present is the 20th and it hasn’t landed yet.
To compound the problem, many of the transport ships were badly damaged by the coastal defence guns and are limping back to Marcus. A few will not make it and the others will probably be too few to embark the other half of the divisions still there. More piece meal landings will result in further assaults that will erode the precarious position on Wake.
A complete disaster.

due to these types of issues, I always load supplies, and always have do not retire for orders.. I may lose ships, but if the base must fall then losing an ak or two is worth parking the tf for a few turn...

I do that as well, but they were following the lead TF and went home with it.

The mistakes at Wake continue, with the 20th division not landing on the beach today because the TF as a whole was set to do not unload. Badly needed troops and supplies sitting off shore while the men die in droves. More troops from the fragmented forces landed, causing yet another shock assualt, causing yet more disruption and death to the Imperial Japanese forces on the island. On the bright side enough supplies have been landed to give the troops some apparent back bone. The allied assault this turn failed to do much damage.

Perhaps since they landed without water, food or bullets they were able to squeeze on the atoll.
Its the only way I can retake it though.

The yellow hordes of Warspite-san keep destroying themselves on my cunning defences.
This turn 4 transports hit mines, and one transport that was returning to Marcus I. caught a surprise fish, courtesy of my Silent Service. This has to put a crimp on any expansion plans of his imerial spiteness.

Now for the AAR
