Operation Rising Sunset:
Now the facts beneath Rising Sunset may be revealed.
After the total destruction of the RN carrier force in Tricomalee, and the savaging of their battleships, the surviving battleships retreated to Karachi for repairs.
In Whitehall, the First Sea Lord commiserated with the US naval attache. After the successful invasion of Truk, the US naval attache had an idea. He discussed it with the Sea Lord and the Prime Minister. Over several bottles of Johnie Walker Red Label a plan matured.
Fletcher was ordered back to Sidney, ostensibly for repairs and refitting. However, upon his arrival at Sidney all shore leave canceled the ships were refueled, and in secret, sent round the south shore of Australia, towards Perth. After refueling at night in Perth, they made the long, lonely tranverse of the Indian Ocean, staying well away from the Japanese occupied shores of the DEIs. While this was going on, Operation Valiant Thrust was preparing.
As Fletchers carriers approached Colombo, the repaired RN battleships returned to Tricomalee, and made raids on the Andamans.
The hope was for the enemy to send, once again, his carriers and battleships to eliminate, once an for all the British battlewagons, and forever banish the English from the Indian ocean.
Allied submarines, thick as flies on a sacred cow's carcass, lay in wait accross the straits of Malacca, and between the Andamans and the tip of Sumatra. The allied carriers would wait to the SE of Ceylon, and operating under friendly land based long range CAP pounce on the unsuspecting Japanese.
The allied carrier force based on Intrepid participated in operation Valiant Thrust, the invasion of Kwajalein. This was to be both an important step in the recovery of the Pacific, but also meant to convince Yamamoto that the US carriers were in action in the Pacific.
Alas, the submarine pickets worked too well. A Japanese light cruiser was torpedoed as it entered the Indian ocean, and later on, a Japanese light cruiser took another torpedo.
The Japanese, not wanting to risk their precious carriers after this ill omen withdrew back to Singapore.
The Royal Navy then played their last card. There were troops prepared to invade the Andamans, but the plan was to send them in only after the enemy carriers were eliminated. Fletcher wanted action, so the invasion force was sent in. At the worst, the Andamans would be retaken.
The Japanese rose to the bait, and their forces were, once again seen approaching the IO. Allied carriers were positioned to intercept, unfortunately far from air cover. The Japanese identified the allied carrier scouts, but thought they were coming from a remaining UK carrier, so they proceeded on to their date with destiny.
