So his Spiteness invades Goodenough island; why, no one knows. It however costs him a CL and probably an AP too.

EXTRA EXTRA Read all about it.

The Department of the Navy reports a major naval battle took place yesterday at a place called Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. An allied cruiser force engaged a superior Japanese force. The following japanese cruisers were identified: CA Ashigara, Aoba, Kinugasa and Kako. They were escorted by the light crusiers Natori and Abukuma.
The enemy task force was repelled and suffered the loss of CA Aoba, CL Natori, and severe damage to 3 destroyers. Allied losses were the heavy cruiser Portland, and two destroyers. The heavy cruiser Northampton also suffered three torpedo hits, but is undergoing emergency repairs.
A speaker for the Navy reports additional forces are being rapidly deployed to the area to counter an expected Japanese deployment.
The battle for Wake continues, with the Japanese making minimal headway with heavy losses in men and ships.

Quieter day today. The Yamato TF is still in the Sulawesi/Banda Sea area, and is attacked by B25s with, as usual no success. Meanwhile, in the New Guinea front, Warspite is still landing and garrisoning the little islands off the Gili peninsula. This is costing him ships, and provides target practice for my Beauforts in PM. In fact, the groups are being rotated through PM en route to other destinations for live fire training!
At Wake his forces are still landing, and suffering losses, although they seem to be losing less men on the shock attacks. In any case my troops are in high spirits.
I have not seen his carrier aircraft for a couple of days. I wonder if they are not heading for Tarawa to annoy my ships there. Perhaps I should move them out of there.

In addition today the Dauntless were active, and did sink that MSW and hit a Battleship with a 1000 pounder. No effect but a hit is a hit.

BBC World Service. Here is the news.
Operation Empire sunrise gets off to a flying start!
The First Sea Lord's office reports that "United Kingdom's forces have now landed in Moulmein, Burma"
Originally planned as an amphibious attack on Rangoon, it was planned to involve two separate landings, one, the largest at Rangoon, and a second, smaller yet substantial landing at Moulmein. Air reconnaisance revealed however that there was no enemy oposition at Moulmein, so His Majesty's Navy proceeded to bombard Rangoon, both to degrade the strong enemy forces present there, and also to convince the enemy that Rangoon was indeed the primary objective. However, the landings took place in Moulmein, unopposed. It is anticipated that the city will be under U.K. control in the next few hours.
This will be the first allied offensive in the Burma/Malaya theater, and is a refreshing tonic for the nation during this weary third year of the war.

Operation Empire sunrise is a great success. Tha rail line between Rangoon and Malaya has been cut by allied forces, which now occuppy Moulmein. Enemy forces are being withdrawn from Mykyvina, and have been spotted moving in the direction of Moulmein.

Meanwhile enemy bombers keep up their daily attacks against the PM airbase; a sure prelude to an enemy attempt in the area.

B17s raid Kendary port and hit DD Arare 5 times. She is not expected to survive this attacks.

Enemy activity against PM dies down today.
The Brits bag a sub between Akyab and Rangoon. I wonder what was it doing there?
Japanese bombard Mykyvina but are seen moving troops south towards the Rangoon/Moulmein area.
Wake is now just trading bombardments, however the supply situation there has stabilized.
Not much more to report

Wake continues its grind, with one more AP lost by his spiteness in his ill omened attempt to subdue the island.

Everything continues the same. 2 days ago, one of my subs torpedoes one of his battlewagons in Wake. His BBs however do not leave. His carriers stay in the vicinity, but moving around to avoid my submarines. Moulmein forces continue to dig in, expecting a Japanese counterattack. He has to dislodge them from there, he cannot afford to let them sit atop his supply lines. Maybe he is waiting for Malaria to weaken them.

Only important thing, his carriers seem to be withdrawing from the Wake vicinity. Maybe all those subs are scaring them away. On the bad news a new surface combart task force is seen approaching Wake. The attrition continues.

Unfortunately CVL Shoho was spotted, under that cloud layer, NW of Wake. Hopes that the carriers were gone to resupply and refurbish were only wishful thinking it seems. Japan seems not to plan to do anything about Rangoon; either their supply levels are skyhigh, or they have some other plans. Meanwhile b17s from Darwin surprise a couple of destroyers and troop carriers in Kendari and drop some presents on them

The battle for Wake rages on. A US submarine torpedoes a previously damaged transport, and a second one is hit by B29s. Enemy carriers still at Wake with their zeroes running interference. Japanese forces assault Wake defences, and are repelled with heavy casualties. No action on the Rangoon front.

Allied strategy bears a small commentary:
The landing at Moulmein's purpose was: 1 to try to draw away troops from the Mytikivina area and perhaps to allow for the re-opening of the Burma road, 2 to distract the Japanese with an unexpected offensive in the Burma area. This might have made them move some carrier forces to the Indian Ocean, away from the Yanks, and finally 3 to use somehow the Royal Navy forces in some operation in the Indian Ocean/Bay of Bengal and thus stop Whitehall from annoying the Theater Commander because he wasn't using the ships he had there, why not send them back to the Atlantic, and so on.
Since a war plan never survives contact with the enemy, His Spiteness has not come to engage the forces at Moulmein, and his carriers are all having a party (a few of them) at Wake. Of course, until such time as his carriers go play elsewher, it gets hard to supply Wake, so Compac in its wisdom has paved the ocean around Wake with submarines, to see if they can make a dent in the Spiteness juggernaut. Other, still classified operations are in planning stages .

The astute commander of the Houston TF achieved another great success. AP
A tanker task force was observed approaching Kendari by one of our submarines. The famous Houston TF, stationed at Darwin was rapidly mobilized. It approached Darwin undetected until an enemy submarine was spotted, already in Kendary waters. Vital time was wasted in the night chasing the submarine, however, the TF surprised 3 tankers loading precious oil in the harbor, 4 patrol craft were also there escorting the tankers. One of the tankers rapidly sunk after being hit by 3 torpedoes, a second one was severely damaged, and is expected to sink; one got away. the 4 patrol craft were sunk. Only minimal damage to DD Dunlap was sustained. Due to the submarine interception, and a second attack by the same submarine, the TF was not far away enough, so that by morning it was in range of Japanese torpedo bombers. After a few anxious hours, the Bettys attacked in force, long before the cruisers could reach friendly air cover. The superb antiaircraft gunnery of our boys however ensured the ships' return unscathed by the enemy torpedoes.

In the Central Pacific theater the Japanese continuie to suffer losses at Wake. Today two of their transports hit mines while bringing in reinforcements. Also one of the transports was hit twice by B26 bombs. Later on the Japanese carried out a desperate attack against the defenders, that was repelled with heavy losses for the enemy, and only a few casualties on our side.

More of the same at Wake; one transport hits a mine, the rest get savaged while landing troops/supplies. Also LBA from Wake keeps getting hits, this time it was the A20s that got 2 hits in a transport. Enemy carrier fighters are only providing coverage for one of the daily raids. It is either that the carriers are only small ones (CVE Taiyo and CVL Ruyjo spotted, but # of fighters seem too small for just these two) or Ops supplies may be limited. Japan continues to try shock attacks, which cause heavy Japanese losses. As far as the supplies, Wake is holding its own
In China, a daring cross country attack on Sining, that went undetected, resulted in the loss of the city. Northern Chinese forces are isolated in Lanchow, with no hope of relief.

Operation Shortstop is in final stages of organization
