EXTRA EXTRA Read all about it. The Department of the Navy reports a major naval battle took place yesterday at a place called Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. An allied cruiser force engaged a superior Japanese force. The following japanese cruisers were identified: CA Ashigara, Aoba, Kinugasa and Kako. They were escorted by the light crusiers Natori and Abukuma. The enemy task force was repelled and suffered the loss of CA Aoba, CL Natori, and severe damage to 3 destroyers. Allied losses were the heavy cruiser Portland, and two destroyers. The heavy cruiser Northampton also suffered three torpedo hits, but is undergoing emergency repairs. A speaker for the Navy reports additional forces are being rapidly deployed to the area to counter an expected Japanese deployment. The battle for Wake continues, with the Japanese making minimal headway with heavy losses in men and ships.
