Today a group of Wellingtons decided to mount an attack on his Task forces in the Bay of Bengal. They picked, of course the Nagato TF, and attacked the Nagato, however, since they did not hit anything, it didn't make a difference!

. 9/17/45 A Japanese surface TF featuring the usual Nagato bombarded Andaman. This TF, had been spotted 1 day prior and, since the CVs were still in Rangoon, a BB TF led by BB Valiant was dispatched to intercept. . Nagato was escorted by the heavy cruisers Mikuma, Chokai, Maya and Mioko, plus an assortment of light cruisers and destroyers. The allied TF comprised the old BB Valiant, heavy cruisers Devonshire, Cornwall and the light cruisers Danae and Dauntless and the AA CLs Capetown Ceres Caledon and Van Hemskerk, with three destroyers. The enemy however surprised and outgunned the allied force, and BB Valiant and CA Cornwall were sunk. Despite a gallant defense the allied force had to withdraw. The enemy however did receive some damage, and it is hoped this will slow down its operations in the Bay of Bengal. Enemy carriers are spotted S of Andaman, but fail to attack Andaman due to weather.

A lot of Japanese submarine action in the Marshalls. Maybe this is a prelude to a Japanese attack.
One of our subs, Salmon torpedoes a tanker.
Otherwise more of the same.

Much of the same in Akyab; the obligatory daily raid. In New Guine, he decided to attack Buna instead of PM. Losses are reported as 8 p39s versus 8 of his zeroes and Tojos.

The present phase of Japanese operations is coming to an end. Operation A-Go was a complete success. Taking the island of Andaman stripped the enemy of the ability to spot our naval vessels along the Thai coast as they approached Rangoon. This will give our forces a free hand in this area. Operation M-Go, on the other hand, was a complete failure. Enemy forces in Mithyitka proved more resilient than expected holding up two assaults. This attack has been relegated to keeping Allied forces pinned in the area. Consequently, it has been decided to concentrate efforts for the build up to Operation Sugar Harvest.
Air campaigns continue to be isolated to the Burma and New Guinea areas. Allied air attacks are very limited in size and result in crippling losses to their bomber formations. Our attacks devastate the enemy air fields allowing us to bring in needed supplies. A third carrier air assault was conducted in the Marshall Islands. The Second Carrier TF sailed through the Marshall Islands sinking troop transports, supply ships and a battleship. It encountered little resistance, however, the commander did note “the enemy pilots over Tarawa were very skilled and despite being in older machines, shot down a number of our planes with little loss to themselves.” On account of this poor performance, the TF is being sent to China to train to a more acceptable level.

The good news is that his torpedo bombers took such a pounding yesterday that my battleships are able to withdraw in peace. The bad news is that his Spiteness-Hito-San has decided to invade Vella Lavella; my intelligence officers were indeed predicting a Japanese offensive in the Solomons. Nice to see that their educated guess was right for a change

The battle for the Solomons continues. In New Guinea, today 10/18/1942, Lae was attacked by 18 Marauders out of PM. 2 Zeroes, 3 Tojos and 2 Tonys claimed, for a loss of 3 F4Fs,1P40E and 2 B26s. The enemy attacked the airfield at Dobadura, and found 27 P40s defending. 9 Zeroes were destroyed, with 4 Sallys and 3 Helens, at a cost of 10 P40s.
Enemy bobers out of Rabaul attacked the invasion forces at Buin, 24 allied fighters provided cover. Betties encountered murderous fire from the Juneau and San Juan CLAAs A second raid later in the day suffered 4 Zeroes lost for allied losses of 1 P40 and 1 F4F.

On 10/19 a respite over NG, however the enemy sends a surface combat CA featuring Kako and 7DDs, TF that intercepts CA Louisville with 4DD; outnumbered and surprised, Louisville is hit by 2 torpedoes and is forced to withdraw. Kako the attacked TF B with CA Minneapolis and Astoria. The presence of the two cruisers somewhat outweighed the enemy advantage in destroyers, and the task forces broke off without any hits on the transports. Enemy air kept attacking the transport Tfs with varied success, but suffering important losses on his fighters.

10/20/42 AP Ormiston, CA Astoria and CLAA Juneau all hit mines in Buin. The heaviest air attacks to date, with 47A20s, 44B25 and 26 B17 are carried out against enemy land forces in Buin.

10/21/42 Coastal guns in Buin seem to be running out of ammunition
10/22/42 Japanese try to reinforce Buin with an AG TF. meanwhile allied fighters over Buin intercept Japanese transports
