After a weekend of playing some more witp, and Hoi2... hoi2 is one of those games... that has some intagible quality like "flow"... I am impressed at the depth of the interalated strencths in the resercher teams... and matching them up to the item one wants researched is interesting... also there is that whole do it early and tie up the slot, or get something else which may be usefull, but not to the same degree.. and what strategy will you need? As Germany I cannot imagine building a huge fleet.. not that this is a bad strategy, just I research several levels of tactics, to get into a wolpack mode.. hehehehe
and race ahead way early into electric subs, same in the armor, and tiger rule in ealy war being able to be made as brigades seperately to be added on....
the production system likewise is steller,each build eats IPand takes a length of time... run my factories in series to gain a gearing bonus or kick out a lot now ?One must manage not only trade to get those needed rare materials, but how do I get to where I want to be, and where do I want to drive the vehicle of progress? Sounds like a war game yet.. ok, You do not get a huge amount of choices in the land combat, no probes or all out attacks.. but what you get is an ia that will kick your ass at the harder initiative levels....
And finally there is diplomacy... very very neat system, I am playing germany 36 and the critical diplomatic and research game has me in to 41 in ok shape, had to fend off a two pronged counter attack launched by the UK after my surface raiders became depleated and a lot of my army was moved East towards the USSR..... I especially like the events.. but since they are not documented in the manual, one mayu wish to save often and read the hoi boards! Things like creating a vichy Government etc are all triggered...

and many many more.
If you do not like to micromange an economy while attempting world domination, and multiculteral relaations, and your research and your infrastructure etc etc, then skip this...
and the map has THOUSANDS of territories.. or is it over a thousand ...??? My problem is that it is almost impossible to manage battles in multiple areas, and if you do not then the ai will kick your ass, surround and anhialate your troops....... In several games Brits in Africa run wild due to my focus elsewhere... but there is that one intangible, maybe it is a playable fun game with a REMARKABLE interface, very intuitive, no ctd.. in single player at least as I saw some post in other forum... and a smooth flow... like a 100 year old single malt !... this really is a great product, hard to believe after hoi "1" was so lame...
probably the changes to land ncombat system that while minor, make a huge game play difference, that and the bug free-ness

Having now played the game for a week, I am very impressed.As Germany, when I attacked Poland before the Soviet-German pact, Russia declared war and France invaded across the Maginot line and I found myself with a two-front war. I didn't like HOI much, but HOI2 feels very much like WW2, although it can be different as above. An onging AAR of this game can be found on the HOI2 AAR forum.

HOI2 IS a complex game, and the leadership rules and overstacking penalties are quite complicated and require some experience to avoid costly mistakes.

Of course I haven't played WAW yet, but from what I have seen, HOI2 is a much more complex game and takes much longer to play. WaW looks to me like a more complex version of Axis and allies, and I don't mean this in a negative way.

HOI2 has certainly generated a lot of excotement on the HOI2 forum, where there is a new message every few seconds and where it is impossible to follow everything without being on the forum full time.

Well Ill chime in here as well and say HOI 2 is absolutely brilliant so far. There is enough variance in the gameplay that your 'world war' could end up entirely different then the historic one but without the cheese of first HOI where you could conquer the world with Brazil. Gameplay as far as tech, production, diplomacy is absolutely fanatic and UI is alot easier to get the info you want out of a glance. So nice to see the makeup of my armor to check its strength, organization and equipment its using so I dont accidently send that green, poorly equipped army someplace important.

freeboy, that is my concern, but does that hot button which is to take you to critical battles, work effectively?...I am glad this game operates on my notebook properly so I can knock off a few turns here at work........I am cutting my teeth on the scenarios which I think was a great idea and so far, my initial impressions are much more favorable than when I played HOI1.....

I find it useful to use that side panel to keep an eye on all battles in progress. Also, I changed the message settings in the option menu to bring up a message box and pause the game whenever a sea battle starts. I have found that sea battles can be resolved much more rapidly then land combat. If you are blazing along at 'fast' or 'very fast' it is easy to have a sea battle start and end before you react.

All I can say is that I'm enjoying this game quite a bit.

I didn't get hoi 1 due to all the bad press it received. I have eu 1 and 2 as well as crusader kings. This one rivals eu2 for me in the fun factor department. It has it's quirks and the ai seems flakey at times and really good at other times, sort of hit or miss depending on the political situation. Overall though, I'm having fun and that's what it's all about.

8.3 but the poor graphics and sound are probably seems to be what pulls down the score. Some stability problems are noted too.

Just think its only v 1.1............imagine what it will be like at 1.5!
Another awsome abilty to play online. Don't get hung up on the Real time stuff.....you go as sloooooow as you want.
WitP and HOI2 are the two best historical games for WWII on the market!

It is actual a step game.. each "turn" is a one hour step.. makes more sence that way to my old turn based brain.. and boy is this a greatly fun game, involving on so many levels...
It keeps surprising, or maybe astounding me at how good the "flow" is.. and the IA really does a good job, best I have ever seen by far !

I am not surprised at poeple claiming this is the best game they have ever played.. I cannot imaging the time involved in head to head... but as a solo game it is great, some thing witp is unfortunately not.... witp is good, and a very different take on the management of your troops.....
of course with huge abstraction in HOI@ and a huge micromanager ability in witp.. lets see that sqaudren of p38's in Port Morsby.. what say we etc etc.. and I love witp....

The major flaws are.. none.. not a single MAJOR flaw, several minor tweeks regarding ease of use of the interface, simply because of the multitude of tasks at hand managing a war, building your economy, firing ministers etc but the interface is FANTASTIC compared to witp and others.....
This game has redeamed PARADOX from HOI/hell in my eyes.....

Beg to differ, but it has a very real very large flaw.

No Windowed mode. No resolution settings. Waste of money.

One day developers are going to understand that forcing a fixed resolution without the option of running in a window should that resolution not be acceptable on your hardware is a MUST HAVE FEATURE.

LCD panels are becoming the norm with anyone buying a new system. If you can't run at the fixed resolution of the panel, image quality takes a huge hit. Sad, but from the looks of threads there, they have no plans to address this. You know, this *is* 2005, it would be nice if we stopped assuming everyone on the planet has 5+ year old monitors.

Before you go down the path of saying the interface is fantastic compared to xyz ... you better spell out the facts correctly as people generally trust fellow wargamers. Windowed, it would be great, without it, it's just more wasted hard drive space with very tough to read fonts. Buyer BEWARE!

But Mr. Frag, War in the Pacific has no supported Windowed mode, and no resolution settings. Would you call that also a waste of money? Sorry, it just seems funny that one game like that is ok, but another one becomes a waste of money.

You must know that for the hardcore Matrix-fanatics (like Mr. Frag), everything is a waste of money which isnt made with hexes and published by Matrixgames.

In fact, every counter "argument" so far brought up so far by the "haters" could be applied 1:1 to WITP. In fact, WITP is an even worse program, it is still unstable and its AI and gameplay sucks big time.

Dont get me wrong, I am a big fan of GG, mostly because of his old titles, but your constant bashing of HOI2 makes you look like a fool.

So I wish you all a nice time with your "supergame" and conquering USSR as Japan, laughable land combat routines, crashing sound and the 1000 other issues which will never be fixed.

And now excuse me, I have to play War in Russia.

a) WitP *does* have a windowed mode.
b) WitP has a different font selection shortly. (as the users have requested it)
c) WitP has a colourblind setting shortly. (as the users have requested it)

Lets stick to the FACTS. I'd be playing HOI2 if it didn't give me instant headaches looking it it on my monitor.

Funny how people get so emotional about stating FACTS. I'm not saying HOI2 isn't the best thing since sliced bread, I am saying that the developers choice to hardcode a resolution such as they did is stupid and results in closing off a large portion of the market. People who have LCD monitors need to be made aware of this as generally there is no ability to return software once opened.

HOI2 looks really great, everything was improved : the interface,the research model,diplomacy,the combat model, you name it.

But they forgot one thing!
There still doesn't appear to be an Allied Invasion AI.

I had very high hopes for this one looks like "THE greatest grand strategy game dealing with WWII ever made, but don't expect the Allies to ever liberate Europe!"

Bummer

Just for the record, I am not saying WiTP is bad. I am just saying it does not have a "supported" windowed mode (It has one, but I've heard its not supported) and it, on shipping, has no font select, no resolution settings, etc etc. Personally, I love WiTP and Hoi (don't have 2 yet, Im saving up for SCS-Dangerous Waters and SH3 myself).

Well I sure hope so.

It's just that in the three games I played so far I never saw one. Neither was there any report of one by a player on the Paradox board that I can remember which is strange cos this was a real problem in the original HOI.

But if you had a major Allied invasion happen in one of your games please tell me about it. Does it happen in all your games or just in a few?

This and the failing Jap AI are really gamebreakers for me...

As I am not saying that HOI2 is bad if you slow down and read my post. The lack of video support simply makes what might have been a nice game useless for us folks that have real monitors. The game itself could be fantastic for all I know, but without video support, I'll never know.

Here's my desktop ... I have scaled it down to fit here, notice the 4 windowed WITP's running on the right.

If there was a -windowed switch, I'd be running it now.

Well, you can look for yourself :)

Go into your HoI2 folder.
find the /ai/switch/ folder
find the file named USA_Dday.ai

This is an ai file for the US that will be activated when certain conditions are met.

In it you will find, among other things, this part:

quote:

staging_province = {
23 # Plymouth
21 # Portsmouth
20 # Dover
}
target = {
# Atlantic Wall
292 = 8000 # Arburg
92 = 8000 # Arhus
91 = 8000 # Kolding
90 = -1 # Kiel
78 = 8000 # Leeweden
47 = 8000 # Amsterdam
46 = 8000 # Rotterdam
45 = 8000 # Ghent
18 = 8000 # Calais
42 = 8000 # Dieppe
41 = 8000 # Le Havre
39 = 8000 # Caen
33 = 8000 # Rennes
32 = 8000 # Brest
34 = 8000 # Lorient
35 = 8000 # Nantes
59 = 8000 # Cholet
325 = 8000 # Bordeaux
326 = 8000 # Dax
}

Basically this shows that this ai has one focus. To mass troops in southern England, and then invade one of the beaches in the atlantic wall.

There is a known issue with the D-Day AI not being executed because it did not have enough transports. It should be taken care of with 1.2 though. Basically the D-Day ai gets loaded, but then it realizes it doesnt have enough transports to do it, so it reverts back to US gearing up 4 ai...and that one might need to prioritize its transports a tad more. Basically the ai needs 3x as many transports as a human player to launch an invasion.

I see. Thanks for telling me.
Let's hope it does get fixed in 1.2 then, together with the Jap AI!

Actually I did critizise the single screen resolution thing in HOI2 too (not on this board though). In fact there are quite some things I dont like too much in this game. And I am using a 21" CRT and some of the Chinese provinces are as large as my monitor. But neither does this game "stink", nor is it worthless- so please explain me why you join the threat, making silly comments like 4 year olds only to downgrade a pretty good game. I dont like the SSG games at all, but I would never say they "suck" or that they are bad, only because I wont play them. I am happy that Paradox does this kind of games, since there is nearly no market for them and I hope that they are very successful with HOI2. And I think they will.

@Salient:

The game is pretty complex, so writing an AI for it is a pretty hard thing. You should wait for CORE HOI2 or other AI updates, I will sure do. In fact I didnt like HOI1 vanillia too much (played it only with CORE), HOI2 is pretty good right out of the box (in my opinion), so I hope the CORE team will again deliver a great piece of work :).

So provided HOI2 implements b and c by next July it will have matched WiTP?

Developers make many bizarre decisions, but your "FACT" is simply a subjective desire, as subjective perhaps as many of the issues expressed in the WiTP forum which you have taken such exception to.

At least you didn't try and mention HOI2's AI

Second, how much RAM did 4 WitPs at once take? That has to slow a system down.

Not that much, I have a fair chunk of it I think I can handle about 10 without swapping too much.

The issue with monitors, resolutions and graphics had me remembering that I bought an upgraded card way back in the early 90's just to play Atomic Games DDay.. cannot at this time remember if the company was even atomic at first, but recently it was newer games needing direct x 9.0 and higher,.. ok out with my older Nvidea and in with ati...
OOPS.. ati doesn't support fog tables for Combat missions... and on and on it goes..

I agree having the ability to window is a nice feature.. I would like to be able to window the Map and another break-out screen,,
and I agree that designing a game with a set resolution is silly...

and poor me my older 48' super duper Mitzubishi tv is hard locked too... no high res games there boo hoo

and trrust me I really tried, and was moderately successfull with combat mission at 640 x 480

So where did this start.. oh yeh.. HOI was just a terrible game on so many levels for so many of us... and HOI2 seems to be a 100 % reversal of the former.
This last game will be a winner... and I really like turn based games much more....
