Imperial troops go over to the offensive again at Bataan but are repulsed. Reinforcements get lost and end up not where they are supposed to be. Emperor reported as pissed.

speaking of pissed......the KXII is starting to piss me off with the cat and mouse game it is playing with my asw forces around Singapore harbor....even had the audacity to counter-attack and hit me with a torp! (fortunately a dud)

obviously ASW is broken....I should have sunk the arrogant little bugger by now

We will be back in Singapore. it will only take a couple of years more or less

Defenders in Bataan are heroes (and taking advantage of the new forts there ). I have no hope they gonna resist for long. but i don't care. My goal is to get in mid '42 with Japan more or less as history.

Subs in this mod are deadly. never seen so many attacks

Japanese forces launch a suprise air attack on the primary British naval base of Colombo....catching 3 battleships and a carrier in the harbor. All four are reported ablaze and shrouded in smoke. A followup naval strike catches the merchants as they panic and exit the harbor. Mass carnage reported! BANZAI!

Imperial storm troopers have begun the assault of Mandalay and good progress is reported as of the last two days against stubborn resistance. In the Philippines, less happy news....another assault is repulsed with no reduction of the enemy position. 14th Army HQ has ordered beheadings to commence.

Didn't expect the attack on Colombo. And somehow i didn't see it coming.

On Philippines allied troops are still holding ground to overwhelming odds.

but you shouldn't trust too much your pilots's reports . a number of transports have been sunk though. and CVL is in bad shape.

In spite of Kaiser's light teasing admonishment, , Imperial GHQ is mostly pleased with our progress as of the close of the first month of 1942. The Malayan operation pretty much concluded on schedule (I was shooting for end of month, tops) and 25th Army is currently re-organizing for it's next campaign. Operations in Burma are way ahead of schedule with half the country now under Imperial control and much Allied material destroyed both in the air and on the ground. The Colombo raid has added sea bounty to the tally and should ensure minimal to no interference from the British fleet.

In the Philippines, overall things have gone according to schedule. Granted GHQ was suprised at the failure of the last two offensive thrusts at Bataan but on the plus side, we have the Allies trapped in one last base on the primary island so the end cant be too far away. With this thorn in our backsides eliminated, Phase III should proceed even more rapidly.

In China....Ichi-GO has concluded with the occupation of the three major target anterior Chinese cities and the netting of 100,000 Chinese prisoners of war. The results should ensure Japanese security for the near future on the mainland.

Overall losses have been minimal so far. Our sub campaign has reaped some rewards but overall, the tonnage returns have been a bit of a disapointment.....the inevitable result of fighting a cautious campaign. On the bright side, only 1 sub has been sunk so far after two months of operations.

ASW and sub attacks in this mod are far better than in stock scenario, that's for sure. Subs aren't sitting ducks and actually (never ever seen before) i am forced to pay attention to subs and to use ASW carefully. In all my other games sub/asw was just a non-existent part of the game.

The Raid at Colombo surely wasn't expected. but losses weren't big. BB still in port (but damaged).
Not much i can do in the air in January in India btw.

Too bad you forgot LR CAP from Rangoon on your invasion TF

Nothing i can do to stop your CV TF raiding around colombo for now. in 6 months it will be another matter, but for now i just can sit and watch.

true. I tend to be very leary of using LRCAP, at least as Japanese......it often causes serious op losses which kills my good pilots. This episode may change my mind though. My careless moves continue with this next set of turns. Got burned pretty good off Sumatra. On the bright side, Akyab falls securing another flank in Burma. Also got revenge on the O23 for brazenly sitting in my port hex and torpedoing an AP.

Another bad day for the Sixth Fleet. I-19 misses an opportunity to rid Japan of another DMS but misses. The followup hunt scores critical damage.

On the bright side, the damaged O-24 is hit again and the BB Hyuga is avenged as elements of KB finally hunt down the remenants of the British Eastern Squadron. Observers over the harbor reported that the old BC Repulse suffered a titanic explosion after being hit by several torpedoes in the harbor, the wreck rolled over and sank. Also reported sunk was the modern BB Prince of Wales while the old BB Revenge was critically damaged and reported settling slowly on the harbor mud.

I made a big mistake that ended up with me losing 2 BB and 1 BC.

I wrongly assumed i would have had 2-3 days of time to evacuate Colombo from the CV sighting day.
However, i didn't sight any CV till the day i got the attack (or maybe the day before but we are playing 2 days/turn and i should have known). Result: i lost 2 BB, 1 BC, 1 CVL and some AK.

My naval assets in the theater are now few. This means Japan will be free to use all his naval power in the pacific without fearing anything in Indian Ocean.

The unlucky part is: when Colombo got bombed, my BB survived and were able (thanks to bad whether) to run to Diamond Harbour unseen.
When Japan CV TF approached Diamond Harbour to finish the job, i had rightly predicted the hex Nikademus would have moved the TF (it was the only one which would have given him 4 hex range to both ports).
But didn't have the courage to send there my BB fleet in the hope to catch in a naval battle the CV fleet.
Had i more courage, i would have got a naval battle with his CV fleet . i would have lost my BB anyway, but maybe i could have landed some hits on the CV..and surely i would have scared Nikademus

In Java i moved many air assets. You will have to bring some serous airpower for the invasion.

The crippled English battleship Revenge is finished off in Dutch Harbor. Intel reports the damaged sub O-23 has foundered attempting to reach Java. Very strong air assets have been confirmed there. Imperial troops continue to advance in Sumatra. JAAF assets are pounding Lashio where a Chinese expeditionary army has encamped.

Imperial forces have advanced to within miles of Palembang in Sumatra. Cleanup in the IO continues. Combined Fleet estimates that no less than 3 dozen enemy warships and merchants have been sunk since the Operation began. Back in the Southern Resource area, a pesky nest of Allied heavy bombers has been eliminated. Several examples of new American heavy bomber have fallen into our hands and will be transported back to the home Islands for study

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 7670 troops, 72 guns, 20 vehicles
Defending force 1159 troops, 4 guns, 1 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 8 to 1 (fort level 2)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Koepang base !!!

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 5 destroyed
Martin 139: 3 destroyed

The Fortress design is too complex for your little yellow engineers. It's time wasted.

if you want to study the design for the Martin be my guest

Luckly, the massacre of allied transports is close to an end (basically i lost most of the ships docked in colombo/diamond harbour ).

In a normal game, you should already start suffering pilot shartage. In this modded game (which i like more than stock scenario), aircrafts have more duarbility and you start with 1000 IJN pilots (+50/month).

it means for the first year and an half i will face the full airforce (no squadron in the rears training) and all with >65-70 experience.

yes.....KB is pretty much done playing. (av points are getting low and primary mission acomplished)

pilots - True....i'm starting to think that the 1000 may be too generous. At this point i'm hovering at about 700 available "fully" trained pilots after 2 full months of moderate combat with 50 a month as the prod rate. Attrition has been somewhat low. 500 may be a better starting number but we'll need to get farther in 1942 before I can really make a determination. "overall" exp has been dropping as desired since even the "fully trained" pilots are on average 10-20 points lower in exp than the pre-war starting elite of the more seasoned and/or extensively trained groups. KB' exp hasn't dropped much thx mainly to the Turkey shoot against low AA and fighter defended targets.

what exp you get them ? did you change it or is it 70 as in stock scenario?

i think the tweak on durability kept aircraft losses (and so pilot losses) lower than expected. However, when allies get better (and more) stuff, you should experience more attrition.
Overall, i think the mod is nice.

i don't know how the speed change you made will affect the game later on. speed+durability+many trained pilots means in '43 for allies won't be that easy.

I left the pilot exp the same for now (70 IJN/ 55 IJA) but may change that depending on how i tweak the starting pool.

Dur - The results are roughly close to the actual results i've recorded out of Lundstrom, Frank, Shores, and Bergerud. I would expect anyone used to the stock scenerio to get the impression that losses are below average. Real life losses in excess of a dozen planes in most battles tended to be rare and extreme. I recall that in the BoB, the "bloodiest" day resulted in the loss of 60ish planes all told. In general air combat isn't nearly as bloody as is regularily thought. I liked the results we saw over Timor and Diamond harbor....despite the large Zero escorts, shots were still taken at the bombers due to no "uber CAP"

Only area i'm still dispapointed is in large air battles where the loss rate exponentially skyrockets. Had a 5 on 4 carrier battle using the mod that still resulted in 260 losses for one side (shot down!) Part of the issue is the scalability of the DUR rating and the very high kill value of the standard 2 x 20/2x 7.7 package or the 6 x .50 package. They are deadly in large numbers against anything under 60 DUR.

I'm playing around with some factors in an attempt to make the tactical bombers more survivable in larger airbattles without either neutering the fighters against larger aircraft and/or making them too anemic with the smaller battles. (yikes)

Speed chg. Subtle so far since we havn't seen much Nate/Oscar combat. You may notice it however to a more subtle degree as in the DH and Timor battles. DUR isn't the only reason why fighters are surviving large CAP defenses to attack the bombers....its also because the speed mod is allowing more mismatched fighters to survive. (i.e. your Lancasters and Wirraways weren't all slaughtered instantly by Zeros) Alot of potential firing rounds ended up with no pulse of fire due to maneuvering and evading.

I'm working to keeping a seperation of JAAF and IJAF units so that the differences can be seen more readily

If japan has avoided a long attrition battle then yes, it should be much harder. (i.e. with good pilots the uber-corsair issue should be much more muted)
