you misunderstood me. I know the losses in this game are more close to RL than in stock Scenario.
i meant that maybe when you set the 1000 pilots for IJN you were thinking at stock scenario losses.

well, you sunk 3 of mine as well. you should be happy .

you should bomb airfields closer. your precious G4M don't make much damage at 17k feets.
2 airstrikes to Sorebaja of 50-70 G4M and damage was minimal.

Anyway, you lost 450 aircrafts/pilots in 10 weeks. That makes 45 pilots/week. since you get 50 a month, you lose 150 pilots every month more or less.

So by end of July you will run out of pilots anyway, regardless of the 1000 starting ones. so better leave some bases in Phi for training, you gonna need it

lol.....boy would that be a Monty Python moment.....the Queen and the Admiralty standing outside the Firth of Forth, awaiting the arrival of their returning battleship. On comes a garbage scow...carrying a big heap of scrap metal with some gun barrels pointing out........

This is an ex-battleship!
This battleship has ceased to be!

Serious ASW this turn. Another Imperial sub falls off the waters of Hawaii. Darn DM's. The Sixth Fleet gains some measure of revenge however by sinking two loaded AK's off the West Coast. Lashio falls to a Banzai attack by Imperial troops, further shattering the remains of the Commonwealth forces formally occupying Burma and hurling the intruding Chinese army back in disarray as well. Japan is now in sole possession of Burma!

Massive air battle over Java as Imperial Naval air assets begin to asert air superiority over the capital city.

The troops in Lashio were already retreating. no way to supply them. Burma is now all japanese (for now ).

Major losses in air battle over Soerebaja. i was hoping to cause more losses to be honest (and to lose less).

Build up continuing in Australia, NZ and south pacific.

PS: my B17 somehow refuse to fly last turns (and pilots are maxed out).

Yep...saw that, (Lashio) so being the gentleman that I am, i meerely wished to help faciliate your relocation.

Soerebaja-

Pretty much went as I expected though things probably would have been dicier had your P-40's been present to help stiffen up the primarily Buffalo and Dutch fighter defense. I gathered Japan's best for this air offensive and it turned out golden with about 25ish enemy fighters shot down or written off after the battle and a similar # the 2nd day of the assault. A brave defense by the defenders but ultimately futile in the face of my brilliance....oh the pilots helped some too

B-17.... set to naval attack? I've been being better lately about covering my operations with some LRCAP...that might be contributing.

yes, they were set on naval attack. but shouldn't they fly anyway?

Regarding Java, i am little scared to put all aircrafts in the same hex since if you come bombarding me i lose a ****load of them. so from time to time i move in different airfields.

Anyway it's not over. i still have many aircrafts. all my bombers are rested and ready for your invasion fleets. Bring it on !

naval attack -

While the heavies are not subject to the no escort rule, they do still have to pass a morale check (+ a couple other variables) which can frequently add up to no naval attack. I have found that they tend to attack more with no escort when assigned a definate target such as a port or airbase vs naval assets. In my AI PBEM i've had an entire BG of 17s on NA and they just laughed at me when i expected them to attack KB.

Java-

Sound policy. Too few players use dispersement and tend to get caught in the trap of concentrating all eggs in one basket. Kind of like it that way. Forced me to attempt air superiority the old fashioned way and send in the flyboys.

Dont worry..Co-Prosperity....coming to an island near you!

Imperial GHQ admitted today that it had suffered a reverse in the Bismarck sea when a small transport force overseaing the occupation of New Britian was attacked by very strong bomber forces that swept over the task force at dawn. Half a dozen merchants were damaged or destroyed and heavy casualites were suffered by the landing force. It came to a suprise that such strong heavy bomber forces were already present in the SW Pacific......undoubtably a reinforcement group brought down from Oahu or perhaps the American West Coast. Occupation of the island however has continued. Imperial GHQ does not expect this development to affect plans in the region.

In other news, strong enemy air assets are reported attacking approaching Imperial forces as the noose around Java continues to draw tighter. The Dutch appear ready to fight for their last bastion.

Allied Bullettin

Strong formations of heavy bombers have sunk 5 enemy transports and damaged the others while the japanese undefended TF was trying to unload troops near Arawe.
The attack is expected to force the Japanese to bring some serious air force in the region in case they want to keep going their expansion in the area.

Huge TF sighted 300 miles from Soerebaja in Java. A Carrier TF is sighted nearby as well. It is expected the invasion of the island very soon.
Bomber formations took off to bomb the approaching TF. Results have been minimal though. After the air battle over Soerebaja 2 days ago, no air attacks from Japanese reported.

All quiet in other theaters.

The battle for Java has begun. Fighting on a massive scale going on. The Dutch have thrown just about everything but the kitchen sink at our approaching forces and managed to score a moderate number of hits. The cost though is heavy. Over 40 planes have been downed in the last two days and dozens more destroyed on the ground as JAAF and JNAF forces sweep the island north to south in search of enemy airpower.

Rabaul raided for the first time. Defending Zeros offer battle...claim 7 downed.

This is a picture of the Invasion.

Dutch bombers tried their best to damage the invasion fleet. Many ships have been reported hit and burning.
Losses for the Allied Air Force have been high though. The 2 CV Tfs (the KB near soerebaja and the baby KB following the invasion fleet around Bali) offer air cover and as a result most of the waves of bombers attacking naval targets are shot down by zeros.

Huge raids have been made by Japs over Batavia and Soerebaja and now they have achieved air supremacy.

ANother TF is heading south from Singapore, problably invading batavia. I have no idea where the souther invasion TF is heading to.

You sure wern't kidding about having amassed a serious bit of airpower in which to defend Java. Glad I opted to not risk anything and provide maximum air cover. Regrettably, my TF's became a little dispersed and a hated rain cloud prevented aircover during one of the PM phases allowing an uncontested strike at one of my transport TF's. Then there was that lucky hit on the Zuiho!

Had I to do it over again, i'd probably have worked over Java a little more before sailing within range of the bombers. Great use of all the bomber fields to disperse and hide the bombers and fighters. It was a fun puzzle trying to figure where the bulk of them would be. Felt very realisitc having to sweep the airfields for suppression and destruction of enemy air vs. the usual tactic of just setting up an uber-CAP and letting them shoot everything down. Those twin bombers proved tough to knock around. I was very suprised at the level of accuracy even if many of the targets were merchants. May need to look at AA given there seems little to discourage 5-6000 alt attacks. ah well.....live and learn and enjoy the excitement

Level bombers are always too accurate in naval attacks . However, i would say you invading Java with minor losses so far. I sunk only 2 ships if i recall right. Others have been just damaged.
Let's hope for another lucky hit on a CV or CVL.

I was expecting you would have landed in Kregan and Batavia. I am a little surprised you decided to invade western side of Java instead.

I opted to go with the classic Japanese two prong attack in regards to Java. There seemed to be enough combat power to do it though i realized there was a risk factor involved given that the mod eliminates the uber-CAP effect (in most cases) and that a high concentration of bombers would be much more dangerous. (safer from the north as the JAAF/JNAF land contingent can provide closer air coverage)

level bombers vs ships-

agreed. Its a thorny problem and one that was on my mind when fiddling around with A2A. Make the bombers too tough to bring down and you might end up breaking some other component of the system. I'll probably play around with AA for the next version of the mod and see what impact it has. Problem as i see it is not so much losses (which aren't really that off in terms of early war AA) but that disruption of bomber aim doesn't seem severe enough when encountering large AA concentrations and fighter defense. I dont want to tweak AA to such a point that suddenly torp bombers get slaughtered even before prox shells and Oki's and Bofers make an appearance. I dropped a base unit on Wake for it's AA guns and figured it would at least make you bomb from a safer altitude but so far, little impact which was suprising. Same for Rabaul. (the A2A result was just what i wanted to see though)

I'm really torn on the issue of merchant DUR now that the supply damage rule has finally been added to the game. Not sure if i will keep it or restore it for the next verison. You had to endure a serious merchant campaign in the IO...opinions? One factor in the reduced DUR's favor is that it helps put a damper on player aggressiveness as i'm certainly finding out right now with Java!

Well, personally the reduction of merchant durability is something i didn't notice. i know you did cause you posted. but if you didn't post, i wouldn't have seen any major difference between this mod and stock scenario.

In Java i bombed a lot of merchants but at the end i just sunk 2 ships. and i used tons of bombers.

Send the turn so we see if i get some new lucky hits

Another action packed set of days. The Japanese air blitz against Java continues without pause, aided by a spat of clear weather. There's no place for Dutch and Allied air power to hide. PT's come up empty (neener!) , so does a fresh ASW offensive out of Pearl......and the Tainen Air group welcomed back the unescorted 39th BG over Rabaul sending 4 Yankee bombers to their deaths and with 2 more so shot up they were write off's on return. (the AA boys got their licks in too)

Send more B-17's we need the target practice Banzai!

losses for the 3rd and 4th days of the air blitz. 18 of the Imperial air to air losses are actually float planes! no thats just unsporting! typical western decadence at it's best

Other 2 days of fierce fighting in the skies over Java. Japan has now achieved uncontested air superiority. However, this didn't stop the Allied Air Force/AA to shoot down 52 Jap planes in last 2 days.

Japanese have landed in Batavia meeting weak resistance. The Southern Invasion TF is still at sea. I still have no idea where they are going to land.

Rabaul has been raided again but this time Japanese CAP managed to get some hits (so did my bombers on his ships docked).

The losses are regrettable but worth the price of admission. My esteemed opponent's defense and comments served to remind me of a common flaw in my thinking in that i tend to fuss a little too much over the preservation of my pilots....sometimes to the point where i compromise a mission's objectives in the process, leading to ship and LCU casualties. (a good example would be Akyab where i opted not to put a LRCAP over the force because i didn't want to lose high exp JAAF pilots to possible op losses) The result of that backwards thinking led to several AP's being hit and worse still, the sinking of the very unlucky BB Hyuga (which sank in Rangoon harbor despite it being a size 6 port!!!!!!!)

For the invasion of Java, I vowed not to repeat such errors and fully committed my airforce to the destruction of enemy airpower. it's paid off with reletively light casualties so far and the destruction of over 200 enemy planes either on the ground or in the air.

Having to suppress Java by going after the airfields has given this phase of the operation a very realistic feel not to mention a serious surge of excitement. Too bad there's this thing called work otherwise i'd be loading up the turn now to see what happens next!!!!

March opens with a good set of days for Japan. Combined Fleet HQ anticipated that the Dutch might attempt to disrupt our landings with PT boats, so we arranged for a little suprise from the air. Avenging Reisen pilots blasted several of the small pests as they attempted to get at our transport fleet.

Bombardment of Java continues with substantial forces now landed near Batavia. In other news, the Sixth Fleet scores another success against a Yankee hunter group and Rabaul strikes back at the 39th BG currently basing out of Port Morosby.

Imperial forces continue to mop up in Borneo. Active resistance is all but at an end now.
