Things have slowed down mightily since the completion of the operations in the Southern Resource Area. All in all March 1942 has had to be one of the most enjoyable PBEM sessions I have played, and I'm not just saying that because Japan was still in the middle of it's "happy time" and had big time advantages in quality and material. Kaiser made it a very entertaining and challenging month by his thorough yet quite historically plausible organization of the Defense of Java, i.e. concentrating Dutch and supporting Commonwealth ground assets coupled with an "Allied" air expeditionary army designed to inflict maximum punishment on any Japanese invasion attempt of Java.

Had I not taken Java's conquest as seriously as the realtime Japanese had....i shudder to think what sort of damages he might have caused. Moral of the story....advancing under air cover is your friend. Coupled with the changes in the mod, I actually found myself having to employ classic military tactics in order to minimize casualties from the air, mainly suppression of multiple bomber capable airfields on the island through heavy and sustained suppression bombings vs the more "usual" tactic of just deploying a heavy umbrella of CAP over combat TF's and their accompanying transport TF's, figuring that they'd shoot down most of everything in sight. The "result" was a very historical feeling at least IMOHO. I managed to destoy and disable a large amount of Java's airpower on the ground while those that did get airborne met heavy air resistance. Some damage was inevitable of course given the large number of medium bombers and several transports were hit and damaged, a couple sank with Imperial Army casualties. The worst strike was a lucky hit on a Japanese CVL (For 33% SYS) Overall though my air and sea losses and damages fell within an acceptible level of attrition and in return hundreds of enemy planes were destroyed...a large majority on the ground.

As with the historical situation, the Dutch combined army was unable to offer adequate resistance to a two pronged landing and the Land campaign thus went pretty much as swiftly as it did in real life.

The question now presented to the Japan player is the same as the one presented to the historical leaders.....what now? Wish i knew.....i'm just the pilot.......

ASW attack levels fell off in March as apparantly both sides were a little more cautious in their deployments, the only sinking occuring because Kaiser stuck a Dutch sub in port hex and I finally was able to spank him for it. Imperial sub efforts continue to be cautiously deployed (all in deep hexes) with a resultant fall off in contacts. 1 sub was moderately damagaed by an ASW counterattack.

Not much to report.

Allied Bombers attacked Timor airfields from Darwin. Losses are reported even for both sides.

Same thing over Sian, where Allied CAP claimed 15 enemy aircrafts shot down.

All the rest is quiet. Japanese CV TF still around gili, covering the landings.

Another quiet turn. Japan stopped bombing Sian (guess he is stockpiling zeroes for next days offensives).

PM bombed by IJN. few aircrafts there anyway. It's hard to defend PM in April with KB nearby. i expect an invasion within 2 weeks.

Allied problem is the fighters: they still perform less than zeroes. And in addition, while he can replace losses fast in pilots and aircrafts, i can't. My pool doesn't allow me to defend for prolonged time anywhere he decides to focus on.

Even in PM, i could hold 10 days. Then i started to get low on replacement of good aircrafts (P-40B and P-40E) while all the other aussie aircrafts are just sitting ducks. and so i was forced to withdraw to avoid losing too many aircrafts.

Patience is the friend of the allied player. However' it's also true that if you don't try at least to slow down Japan and keep him honest in planning his invasions, you find him in NZ by end of May .

Truer words were never spoken. Having been forced to play Japan consecutively for a while, I've learned some hard lessons myself in regards to air ops and one of the biggest lessons i learned was, dont go into an area unless you've got the assets (logistical/military) to get the job done. As with Java, I quietly built up my forces in the Solomons area in anticipation of serious resistance having been badly burned my last trip into this region which i had assumed would be 'quiet' while i focused on events closer to home. While attrition tactics inevitably favor the Allied player in the long run, i've learned that the Japanese player can also benefit from those same tactics if he's prepared ahead of time. Having commited over a FG's and a half's worth of modern P-40's to the defense of PM, I was able to wear the enemy down with an even larger force i had amased and coupled with heavy suppression attacks against the airfields, my harvest of enemy planes destroyed is perhaps the highest yet in any game i've played (800 on the ground alone) As previously noted, I've been particularily aggressive going after B-17 concentrations now that the pipeline to the 8th Air Force has been shut off (Even more so now with the 39th BG now deleted from the latest version)

Even the Allied player cant sustain such losses indefinatley so quickly and so early in the game. Yes, i took losses, yes my avg exp values are declining as aces are killed here or there, and the pilot pool has been in a debit situation for some time now, but it's won me local superiority and made the job of the other services that much easier and it buys me time as well as all that material will have to be replaced.

Perhaps a lesson to be noted here too is that focusing alot of airpower at one or two points isn't all about advantages but also had disadvantages as well. That tends to get lost in alot of the threads where concentrated airpower gets ranted about as a game breaker.

Yes, concentrate air assets brings a big problem is your enemy is able to achieve air superiority as he is able to kill lot of planes. I tried in Java and PM and in both cases i ended up with tons of losses.

However, i don't know the alternative. leaving Java and PM completely undefended since day 1 ? still dubious about what could be the best strategy. i don't like giving PM and Java free to the Japs. it gives them another month of free time to try something else.

Very true as well. Personally, I think your defense of Java was very well laid out as well as historically plausible. It only failed in the end because I brought in overwhelming force, including the KB to pound your multiple bomber capable airfields into the dust through constant pressure. I even had enough airpower to go after your PT boats (another hard lesson i learned in the past)

The only alternative would have been not to fight and as you said, and as Mogami has stated in regards to the "Sir Robin" defense, it only allows the Japan player to move that much faster. IMO, the Allied player must always defend the SRA for that reason. Its not a freebie like it was in PacWar....the Japan player has to work for it, even if in the end he holds all the cards. As far as PM is concerned, thats more of a grey area from what i've experienced and read....some players like to make a fight of PM, others do little and prefer to defend from the shores of Oz. For our game i'd say it's a decent strategy as i tend to play cautiously, ensuring a careful advance before moving. Against a more agressive player it might not work so well as the Japan player might simply leapfrog or go somewhere else.

Well PM isn't a place where i decided to "draw the line". but as Java, i wanted to keep you honest and kill some IJN pilots.
Not sure it is worth though. My whole strategy in this mod has been since i satrted to get in july with your damn pool depleted of IJN pilots. but to try to keep the losses high, i was forced to commit tons of aircrafts and had many losses.

it's always hard to play Allies against a good Japanese player. i played Japan myself a lot and i do know that in forst 6-7 months Japan can conquer any base they decide, regardless of Allied committement. the risk then is to overcommit somehwre just to see my troops encircled and killed. cause that is what i do as Japan: after SRA is taken i just look where Allies decided to commit and go there.

Four month ASW review.

Total number of ASW attacks/successful attacks (Hits) Dec41 - Mar 42

Japanese ASW vs Allied sub

79/13 ( 4 in shallow/port, 9 in deep water)

Allied ASW vs Japanese sub

51/7 (all 7 deep water)

*sightings/attacks + counterattacks where at least 1 escort was present to retaliate after sub attacked target. Hits do not automatically imply a sunken sub.

Iboats sunk = 4

Allied boats reported sunk (by depth charge) = 7

Me like.

11th Airfleet HQ reports the Port Morosby invasion force suffered heavy attacks over the last two days by the phantom B-17 BG that had been reported skulking around Darwin. Dozens of unprotected Fortress aircraft attacked the transport fleet but were largely driven off by defending Army and Navy pilots from nearby airbases. Navy pilots submitted claims for at least 3 Fortresses downed over the soon to be Japanese port while Army pilots claimed a Liberator type aircraft. Intelligence sources estimate that as many as 12 Fortresses in total were destroyed over the two day attack period, either as write offs on return or crashing/ditching while making the long trip back to the Townsville. A number of navy pilots were forced to ditch or force land their own battered aircraft on return but almost all of the pilots are safe back at their bases.

A hearty Banzai! to our brave pilots for such a sterling effort!

Speaking of Darwin....Navy cruisers left another calling card at the exposed Australian port, destroying almost two dozen aircraft in the process.

I was expecting you would have taken the base on first attempt too.

May is approaching so i can finally upgrade my english planes and your zero bonus is finally out of the game

the game is finally entering in his more enjoyable period (mid '42 - late '43). In this period the odds are almost even. Before mid '42 the odds are too much for the Japs (and i played countless of games in that period), after '43 allies have overwhelimng odds as well.

Well i guess i'd "partially" agree with the "more enjoyable phase" comment.

While the Japanese edge is now blunted, I am glad to be out of the SRA phase of the game as it is a major administrative pain in the buttocks to pull as Japan without screwing up. Always hate that sense of having to "rush" too. I can actually relax now as i contempate the inevitable crushing return of Allied material......

Imperial GHQ is very displeased with the preformance of the 38th Division's CO. An inquiry may be conducted after the battle is over. At least this time the 38th inflicted greater casualties on their enemy but the defense remains firm despite the odds.

In more heartening news.....KB has thwarted what may have been a budding Allied attempt to damage the Port Morosby invasion force. What might have proven an inconvenience to our timetable has been turned into a major routing of Allied naval power in the Coral sea.....a substantial number of enemy heavy cruisers were all but blasted out of the harbor of Brisbane. Amazingly there was no fighter cover at all!

Admiral Nikamotto's only regret was that there were no enemy carriers present in Brisbane harbor.

April ends and i post my monthly report.

NG
Port Moresby fell just the 1st of May. i really never expected to defend Port Moresby from Japan in April. i would have committed serious land forces only in june. But this would have needed Japan to be slowed in Java and SRA.
As people who read this AAR knows, i failed in the attempt. Depsite my effort in concentrating as much air power as available, Japan took Java on schedule and also inflicted heavy air losses to me in the process.

Burma
It's all quiet here. I can now upgrade all my british squadrons, so i will have enough hurricane to make Nikademus think twice before trying to bomb anything in India.
And in last turns i started to bomb Burma. This will obvioulsy increase month by month as number/quality of my air force in India increases.
It's still May though. This means Japan can still try invasion of India.

China
All quiet there as well. The supply situation, and major loss of troops i had in the battle of Changsha doesn't give me any hope to be able to oblige Japan to commit more troops in China. On the contrary, he can move some divs out of chia to Burma to help defence if he wants.

Pacific
He didn't do any advance after conquering Tarawa and Wake. Baker s still Allied.

In general, his pilot pool is decreasing (just in last 2 days he lost around 60 pilots more or less) so the quality of his pilots should lower to more reasonable levels.
The problem is that he prolly has problems in IJA pilots while IJN is still rich of pilots. This isn't good obviously, as most of the important japanese squadrons belong to IJN.

Total number of ASW attacks/successful attacks (Hits) Apr 42*

Japanese ASW vs Allied sub

3/0

Allied ASW vs Japanese sub

2/0

April was a very slow month for ASW.....very little sub activity on either side. Ironcially this left the only sub victims of the month strictly to airpower. I blasted several of Kaiser's subs at Brisbane port while his aircraft from Brisbane hit and damaged two Iboats...one that might founder.

*sightings/attacks + counterattacks where at least 1 escort was present to retaliate after sub attacked target. Hits do not automatically imply a sunken sub.
