Hi Nik...thanks for the update. So, your "fix" seems to be working for the Japanese boats. I believe the same is needed for the Allied boats given the loss of seven in just four months, all to DCs. Again, the problem I see is that the model, however it is supposed to work, clearly gives the surface forces too great an advantage over the sub.

LoL....well i dont agree. 4 of the seven sinkings were in shallow water hexes vs well established ASW efforts. 2 of the losses occured before Kaiser took over and during the SRA operation he was quite aggressive with his subs....not foolishly so but rather, as i dubbed it "cautiously" aggressive including at least two operations vs port hexes...1 I tried to spank him for (and failed) the other i was able to spank him for leading to another sinking. So despite his efforts and mine, only 5 subs were sunk directly by ASW attack during the period from which he took over to now. Given this all occured before the naval air/ASW fix....i think thats telling. 13 successful hits out of over 80 ASW attacks (hits, not sinkings) does not strike me as excessive given the resources i've devoted to ASW during my SRA operations.

Kaiser, you want to chime in with an opinion?

It's still early in the game so the crew ratings of your lesser escorts (PCs, MSWs) are still on the low side. Once the crew ratings go up, watch the fireworks. That was what was illustrated in the four stock games which went into the summer/fall 1942.

The other issue I have always had is the perceived notion that placing a sub on established convoy routes and even off bases (60 mile hex) constitutes "overly aggressive" behavior. This may be the case in the game (because the model is off regarding ASW capability of surface ships and how the TFs interact vs a sub) but historically this was the norm.

I have been using both PC/MSW's and DD's.

Where did i say Kaiser was being overly aggressive? I said he was being "cautiously" aggressive meaning that overall he was balancing the need to disrupt me while considering the survivability of his assets, hence most of his efforts were off in either deep water or if in shallow water at least away from bases....a couple of times he rolled the dice and snuck into ports....one time he got away with it despite repeated ASW counterattacks.....the other time i spanked him and scored IIRC the month's only sub kill by ASW. Other times he placed subs in choke spots in the SRA, near enough bases that it was easy for me to send out sweeps. A calculated risk but one i could understand. He did hit a couple ships and nearly torpedoed the Nagato. (FOW as it turned out)

Actually you're more than willing to have some. I find I can never eat more than 1/3 tub of popcorn before I get bored of it. Tell you waht 1/3 to me. 1/3 to you and 1/3 to Ron. There everyone happy right?

I'm still at a loss regarding your inability to agree with me that ASW was overly accurate from the outset given the fact that you needed to quadruple the IJN sub durability to get the losses down to a reasonable level.

Side note...something that would help I boats survive (and IJN ships in general) is to tweak down the penalty suffered by Japan for "supposed" lack of damage control. When every ship seems to gradually sink with the moderate flood damage, perhaps the penalty is too severe. Japanese sailors had no real problem with counter flooding/shoring bulkheads....their main problem seemed to be CV fires early on. The Allies get great damage control across the board from 41 on most likely because of their late war damage control ability (despite historically losing the Lex to post action explosions, Princeton to one bomb, all those BBs at PH succumbing to flooding, Benham, O'Brien etc to structural failure/progressive flooding...the list goes on) yet Japan get's labelled as incompetent for what reasons....Taiho (same as Lexington but in 44), Shinano (skeleton crew on a transfer voyage), Kongo (for progressive flooding)? What about Midway, where all their carriers were scuttled, problem was fire, not flooding? Mogami's severe damage at Midway? Aoba at Cape Esperance? Shokaku's repeated damage and survivability.

Does anyone else think that perhaps the penalty for damage is a tad bit severe for Japan? Simply turning "Allied Damage Control" to OFF does not work as then the perceived retarded incompetence of sailors becomes universal.

It might be because the tests i've done indicated to me that only Allied ASW was out of wack and I've never seen a test from you to convince me otherwise. The DUR change works....thats why i use it. its that simple. I've posted ASW results for each month of this AAR....I think they clearly support what i've been saying all along which was that only Allied ASW was a bit excessive in my opinion.

I would prefer if DC hits caused more SYS and less FLT to represent the fact that a "hit" in the game can be better interpreted as a near miss for concussive damage vs a direct hit which in most cases would mean the instant destruction of the sub.

ASW seems better here than in stock scenario, that's for sure.

Japan subs IMO now are a threat to care of. In Stock scenario they drop like flies

Regarding Allied Sub losses, most were due to me beeing lazy . the first month after i took over i was concentrated on getting the stuff where i wanted and so in the turns the subs weren't getting attention always (i left 1 sub 1 week in singapore port simply cause every turn i kept forgetting about moving it) .

When i saw him using his CV for Java, i sent there lot of subs hoping for a lucky strike. This obviously increased my losses.

However, in general, i am cautious with subs now that i know where my stuff is and can concentrate on everything (if you notice in the last months you didn't get many ASW attacks or sub attacks) cause i wait for upgrade and increased experience. also i prefer to patrol deep see lanes, so not sure if i am the perfect tester for seeing if sub kills/losses are close to RL or not.

btw nik, your coprosperity won't last 400 days...go figure 1000 years

71 Jap planes killed against 82 Allied.

This is the result of the last 2 days of battles over Mandalay and Dacca.

Allied Officers report it is clear Japan is losing air superiority in Burma and are now forced to concentrate many squadrons in order to try to limit Allied bombing raids.
Many good yellow pilots die trying

TFs going to Akyab to bring supplies and men to the city are regularly attacked and sunk by Allied bombers taking off from Dacca.
Intelligence report that Japanese Sailors assigned to these TF have started to commit karakiri instead of accepting the assignment.

Imperial Intelligence reports that many Allied pilots are refusing to get into their outclassed or antiquated aircraft and face the ever victorious Imperial air forces. Burmese air security is stronger than ever.....Allied bomber crews know that statistically speaking, it is only a matter of time before their number is up.

Fierce fighting over the skies of India continues. Intel reports indicate that in addition to over three dozen enemy fighters downed over the last two days, as many as 60 enemy fighters were also destroyed on the ground as well. Imperial losses have been heavy but their sacrifice and resolute bravery in the face of defending enemy fighter planes has kept bomber losses to a negligable level, allowing them to devastate the enemy fighter groups on the ground as well as in the air.

British officers report 94 aircrafts lost (ground+air) and 41 Japanese aircrafts killes (air+flak+ops) last 2 days.

More Hurricane squadrons have been now redeplyed in the area as a counter measure to increasing enemy activity.

Huge air battles over Darwin, Akyab and Chandpur.

Akyab is kept closed by Allied bombers.
Chandpur is bombed by Sallies taking off from Mandalay.
Darwin is bombed from Timor and Allies put CAP on it: big battle.

In addition to this, Nik once again has been able to get his ghost KB near Sidney without me beeing able to spot him first. Result, a huge convoy going back to Melbourne is literally butchered wave after wave of Kates and Vals.
The good news is: the convoy was empty and on the way back.

At the end of the day(s) allies lose another 81 aircrafts. Japan losses are around 60 aircrafts.
IJN pilots are still very good and he has still a huge pool of them by my calculation. IJA pool should be completely depleted though. Not a big thing i know.

Sheesh. Its lucky the Allies have a lot of transports.

Good way to attrite the Jap carrier's - use transports as bait and make them loose 2 or 3 planes to ops

May was the most quiet month yet for submarines. Very few contacts, but one very dramatic one, the famous S-44, skippered by what must have been a very aggressive CO staged two attacks on a force i sent to deal with him, fortunately missing both times (with Mk-10's so couldn't count on duds to save the day) 3rd time was the charm and the old boat was sent to the bottom.

Total number of ASW attacks/successful attacks (Hits) May 42*

Japanese ASW vs Allied sub

3/1

Allied ASW vs Japanese sub

1/0

I think i will lose around 40 transports at the end. He completely caught me off guard. If he did that just 2 weeks before, i would have lost tons of troops. I think this means God is on my side

As of June 1942, the Japanese Outer Defense Permimeter has been fully secured. All objectives of the 1st and 2nd operational phases have been taken and losses have been light to moderate for the most part. (i.e. nothing the Japanese Empire cannot afford to lose at this point)

Though more than secure on land, the Burma theater ended up becoming active from the air sooner than hoped for. (but not unexpectedly) What was unexpected was the degree to which my AA defenses would be in terms of helplessness to even force Kaiser to bomb from a safer altitude. As a result, the Burma theater will have to rely on a committed defense by the JAAF bolstered by units from the JNAF at least until better, more heavily armed aircraft are deployed. (regrettably we started the game pre player upgrades so i'm stuck with Nates for a longer time than i'd like)

This of coufrse assumes that Southern Area Army will remain passive. Assume nothing i always say

Same goes for Combined Fleet. With our objectives secure, CF can now look towards it's next targets. A foray by KB into the southern Coral Sea has already reaped a bounty of enemy merchant vessels, estimates are that over 100,000 tons of enemy cargo capacity was sunk on the mission.

Since this is a playtest, i am forced to embark on Kaiser a bounty even better than Signit. Pilot pool status. Since there have been many questions regarding the changes i made here its only appropriate to reveal the current pool levels as of mid 42 with modest to brefily moderate attrition levels (primary caused by the huge New Guneau air battles over Port Morosby.:

Pool levels remain at 50% of start for the JNAF while the JAAF remains critically drained.

Top Japanese air losses. Biggest losses have been among the fighters, both army and navy which have done a stellar job of protecting the bombers. G4M and G3M losses have been negligable, while army heavy bombers are moderate, primary due to a couple poorly executed raids in China that got beset by the AVG backed up by Chinese fighters. Still, the losses have been managable.
