AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/24/41

A day of tough fightings.
At Canton island one of my DD division has found a transport TF...the allied screen sacrificed itself, saving the day for the allies
From Chungking took off a bombin force escortd by half of the AVG....my CAP was light and i paid the price for it
Tomorrow there will be the first deliberate attack at Ichang...let's hope cause it's too importand to open this gate!
Akyab became the new training camp for his fighters:-(
Some partisans came in in China behind my lines.....i had to dispatch 2 units to cover my backlines
4-5 days and we'll be at Darwin....wow...i must confess i'm scared
Tomorrow Rabaul should fall
Tarakan has been conuqered, but altough i spent a week to disable his engeneers....2/3 of the resources are broken:-(
Tomorrow the 25th army will be at Jore Baru ( sp?)....while the 15th will take Rangoon

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/25/41

For Christmas we conquered an abbandoned Rangoon. Now our burma army is split in 2: the smaller part is one hex south of Mitykinam where 5 british units are defending the base, while the rest of the 15th army will move from Rangoon towards Magdwe.
Akyab is being hit every day by enemy planes...i tried to resupply my boys there, but lost 3 transports due to a LRCAP over there...
The AVG is patrolling ICHANG,causing my some heavy air losses:-(
The first deliberate attack at Ichang cost me 4500 men...and levels of destruption close to the 80s....but at least a fort has been demolished.
Now there's a new problem: i sent a convoy to bypass Singapore and conquer Medang....they are now 60 miles south of Singa but my recon discovered 60 bombers tranfered from Java to singapore...they are going to look for my convoy...quite sure of that.Had to dispatch a small zero group to Kota Baru, trying to LRCAP from there..let's hope cause i fear the british torpedo bombers...
My opponent has clearly understood i'm going for Darwin...let's see how he will react. Till now he has not made any mistake
Rabaul fell today as foreseen. Now a base force is unloading and in 3 days 2 betty daitais will arrive along with a pair of Mavis chutai
What will make the difference will be China and Burma now. I need to force and break the Ichang front and flank Sian defences from the north taking Luchow...it's a big gamble but if i manage to do that, the entire northern China will be undefendable for him

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/27/41

Another dab day in China
30 planed destroyed in the ground at Hankow...the only good thing is that with all those heavy bombers at Chungking he0s burning a lot of supplies...but at Ichang, altough my constant bombing, his troops have rebuilt the forts and i manage to get just at level 2 with this second deliberate attack:-(
But now it's time for Darwin.... he put something like 10 PTs there...those bastards will suck my op points so that my bombardment TF won't achieve any good results:-(
BTW tomorrow the landings will start.....everything will be decided by his CD guns...those monsters can ruin my day, i know.
He feels quite confortable about the fact i'm going for Darwin. He's quite sure he can get it back without any big problems...he's probably right, that's why i'm starting to think about how many divisions will i need to defend the northern oz...any ideas?

Pity i read this too late

I took darwin
I have also tried to take darwin in another game

The CD guns are going to kill you big time

far better to land on the beach on the hex to the east, no guns, little disruption, and it takes only 1 week to march across

Im now holding the place with significant forces, but he will have to bring a lot to kick me out.

I do predict the cd guns are going to wreck nearly every vessel you have.

I took Darwin twice in PEBM (both with the official map). Once the place had been reinforced and I took it from land with troops coming from Wyndham. Allied garrison surrendered.
Another time my recons showed less troops (and I had met Australian troops in force in Kendari, so in fact the base had been depelted rather than reinforced) and the airfield was full of damaged planes, as my opponent brought them to oppose the landing. 4 BBs and the KB pounded the base several times with light losses and wrecked it. Then I landed directly at Darwin. Losses were not so heavy. From memory 1 DD, 3 MSW and 2-3 AP sunk, 5-10 AP damaged but all saved after the base was taken.

As for holding northern Oz, I personnaly won't commit much troops there. Either you continue to attack and seize Perth or land in Cooktown/Cairns, or you are just buying time for building defensive positions in Timor and the area.
I think one division is enough. So the Allied player should send several divisions to chase it. If so much troops arrive close by, I will probably evacuate before fighting.
The best defensive strategy for me is to have only one division in Darwin and 2-3 other in reserve in Timor-Java. If the Allied is moving with overwhelming forces, you just retreat by ship and he will not attack anything else for a moment. If he is moving with 3-4 divisions, you just send the reserves. Up to mid-1943, Allied will (normally) not have enough CV to win the aerial superiority in the area so IJN should be able to bring troops at sea without much problems.

I'm waiting for the turn to come in. I immagine that those big CD guns are gonna wreck a lot of ships. I tried to put some DDs,PG,MSWs and CLs in every important TF i'm sending there...i hope some counter battery can make some difference.
I completely forgot to bring some para units with me...when Darwin will fall i'll have to march southwards in order to take Daily waters...i think that i'll leave 2 divisions , 2 tanks rgts and 1 eng regiment in Northern Oz for the moment. This army ( the 14th) will have to create the living space around Darwin, while the other army(16th), composed by 2 divisions,1 eng unit, and a base force will be sent to take Timor,Tarakan and later on Java. His b-17 from Timor are trying to ambush my ships...luckly my baby KB is providing a good umbrella there....
If he's not crazy ( and i'm sure he is not) he has already sent some Australian divisions towards Darwin.....i'll have to face some stiff resistance in northenr oz...quite sure of that.
Well....we'll see in a couple of turns how things will turn on!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/28/41

100,000 japanese troops have already put their feet on the northern coast of Australia. The dreamt Australia! The CD guns of Darwin did not cause any serious damage to my ships. What has been a BIG problem was those bastard PT boats....they almost kill an entire Air HQ:-(...
In China bad weather prevented any serious Air operation. We keep on bombing Ichang, but the lack of supplies is causing real problems. At Sian we're slowing encircling his troops...but it takes time...too much time...and from Chungking his bombers are making me bleed...i need some more zeros here!
Tomorrow we'll unload more troops at Darwin, while the naval and ground bombardment will go on. In 2 days we'll make our first deliberate attack!
Tomorrow in Malaya we'll attack his positions at Jore Baru....Singapore will follow soon!
Rabaul,Tarawa and all the pacific is quite for the moment. More troops and engeneers are on their way to build up a good defensive line!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/29/41

While the end of 1941 is close, the Imperial Army is fighting on the beaches of Darwin.
The unloading operations continued for the whole day, despite the bad news comming from the 11th Air HQ....which is now beneath the waves! Tomorrow our brave soldiers will try the first attempt of a deliberate attack. The bombardments of today were very successfull.
No ships lost due to the CD fire...which is a good news

Our silent hunters found and torpedoed an American BB, damaged during our last raid at Pearl Harbour. 2 fishes are reported to hit that sea monster! BAZAI!
In China, tons of b-17 are hitting my airfields, defended only by a couple of old nates....the chinese front is suffering! A Supply convoy is getting ready in Japan...it will bring new fresh supplies to ou troops in the front line of our chinese offensive perimeter
The first attack at Jahore Baru was not that succesful....but at least the forts are comming down

Few more units are getting ready at Tarakan...their next obj is Balikapan!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/30/41

By the 30th of December Darwin is Japanese! What a great result!! The Oz garrison did not defend well against our overwhelming forces. Now 1 Army, the 16th, will march with 2 divisions,3 tank regiments and 2 eng regiments southwards, pursuing the fleeing enemy. The other army, the 14th, will stay at Darwin, resting for 2/3 days and then sail towards Timor. 2 SNLF units are already on their way towards Dili and Lautern. Our main force will get on Koepang in order to get that level 4 AF asap. His B-17s are trying to get my ships taking off from Keopang, so i want to destroy this threat before he gets even more 4E bombers on this theatre.
Carriers Akagi and Kaga are on their way to Palau. They'll be leading the Baby KB, while 1 CVL will be dispatched to join the major KB at Truk.
Another BB division is heading to Darwin. This new force will join the 1st BB division that already partecipated to the conquest of Darwin.
Slow progresses in Malaya, but constant.
Slow in Burma too
In China we're at a Statelmate at Ichang....now i hope that the Sian front won't be as difficult....if so our general offensive in China will be delayed or stopped

2 lines about my carriers

As stated above, there will be formed 2 KBs. each of them composed of something like 200/250 war planes. What was the baby KB will operate in the DEI area, supporting the invasion of Timor and Kendari, while the other one will remain in the waters of Truk, where it will get ready to support the next advance towards Lunga and New Guinea.
Now, about NG.... After a week of deserved rest, the South Sea Det. will be ready to invade Port Moresby, while some minor units will go for Lae and gili gili. The invasion of PM is connected with many "IF"....i will need at least another full division and some Engeneers for that, so these units must be taken from the Northern Oz invasion force. If the Timor iinvasion will go smooth( and so to say if i won't have any big problems with allied CVs or with LBAs), i will use the 4th division for PM...or one of the two i let fighting for Oz....gotta see how he will react to the capture of Darwin. Will he send all his units from Southern Oz to the north? If so i won't be able to hold the place for a long time....but i will have the air superiority, which is a good thing.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/31/41

The last day of a great year.
the allied bombing offensive in China is making my life miserable. Today Yenen was badly hit...its resources are still burning . Cannot control the skies with his heaviests going everywhere from Chungking.
We're trying another offensive at Ichang for tomorrow...let's hope some forts will go down
At Sian everything marches slowly, but at least the way towards Lungchow is empty now...gotta flank his positions
At Sumatra we conquered Medan...but everything...everything was destroyed:-( not a single oilplant open
Johre Baru fell today. Now i have to free my back lines from a oz bde and then Singapore will be closer
2 divisions, 1 Bde and 3 SNLF units will march tomorrow towards Clark field: now that he knows i have 4 divisions at Darwin i cannot let him react at Luzon

My Mavis in recon spotted something very strange at Koepan: 103 ships anchored there! Way too much...so i must think he's prepearing a naval counterattack in the area...possibly with some CVs comming from Perth....the CV reinforcements will arrive at Palau in 4 days, then i'll have to combine them with my baby KB before launching a major strike here. Want to try the new night bombing feature...2 experienced betty daitais will try tomorrow night to bomb Koepang's port..let's see what can be done here!

My Sub I-9 performed quite well, avoiding a strong US attack and putting a fish in a DD...well done!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/01/42

The new year begins in a bad way.
At ichang our attack is repulsed with heavy casualities. No way to break his defences here. Gotta re-think the whole strategy and focus on the northern theatre.
His bombers pounded the resources at Canton. With this rate he's going to destroy my HI in the whole china....i thought those bombers eat a lot of supplies........
The new patch prooved to be right: not a single hit at koepang at night and 6 betties did not come home
His troops retreating to daily waters are keeping a fast pace: they already marched for 60 miles and my guys are pursuing them
The first 2 divisions are loading up at Darwin. I 3 days i should be able to enmass the 16th Army for Timor. My recon says there are at least 2 CAs out of the 110 ships seen at Koepang. The good news is that his CVs have been spotted near Palmyra...so he's not going to attack me there!
In Burma i'm trying to encyrcle some troops( see map below)...i do not think he's going to let me do so

One Naval garrison is ready to go for Lae, while 3 naval units are on their way for Samerinda

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/02/42

That's strange. My recon keeps spotting the more and more units at Timor...i'm quite doubtful now: what is he trying to do there? 20 units just at Koepnag....really hope 2 divsions will be enough. Quite sure i'll found a damned tough time there. i'm happy now that my 2 CVs are comming...with more zeros i can protect the better my transports
I do not know what the hell those aussies drink, but they run just too fast! I just cannot get them...( see map below)...2 hex in 3 turns is a bit too much for 4 units that are running away after a great defeat!!
In Burma, as predicted...i could not trap his troops. I'm going to try to land some paras at Mytykina, so that when Mandaly will fall his troops should retreat towards Lashio...but i now know he wants to withdraw here and make me lose time, while his planes keep on training over Akyab:-(

80 bombers and 70 fighters spotted at Chungking....way too much to handle

At Clark fields my 2 divisions will start to bombard the american units there...wanna make some pressure on him!

The burma map...

I notice that you are using version 3 of my map, not version 3b. In version 3b the link from Bangkok to Moulmein was changed from a railway to a trail (as it should be). That probably explains the problem with Canton as well.

Oh....that's strange 'cause i'm quite sure when this game started on your site was already pubblished the 3b version...
So this one is messed up? How many other problems does it have if any?
Thanks a lot Andrew

Here is the list of fixes in 3b, from the readme file:

Version 3b includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:

   1. The "Burma Railway" was changed from a railway to a track on the
map, but the map data was not changed. This has now been fixed so
that the link really is a trail.
   2. The trail between Chungking and hex 47,28 (near Kungchang and
Sian) was wrongly represented as a road in the map data. The map
data has been corrected from road to trail.
   3. Pagan in the Marianas had its name changed to Meiktila, as well as
the Pagan in Burma, due to an overenthusiastic scenario conversion
script. The proper name has been restored.
   4. The Soviet base name "Ohka - Sakalin" has been changed to "Ohka".
   5. The base name "Waigeu Island" in Dutch New Guinea has been changed
      to "Waigeo Island".
   6. The "ModSelect" utility may not work properly on Windows 95, 98
and Millenium Edition operating systems. The utility has been
revised to ensure that it works OK on those systems.

The real way to check which version you have is to look at the transport links themselves in the hexes mentioned here. Also - you can update the map during a game in progress. It will start using the new map from the next time you start the program and load the save.

Andrew

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/03/42

In China his heaviest hit badly Yenen today...cannot defend there untill a base force will come...but again, he's changing target every day and i simply cannot efford to follow him.
My troops have been ordered to lay siege against Sian, while some minor units are slowly crossing the mountains trying to flank that city.
Finally my Kaga and Akagi reached Palau. Now with a strong BB division they will move towards Ambonia, where they will meet the baby KB and the 16th army for the timor invasion
We unloaded at Samerinda, next to Balikapan. Will be slow here cause now the priority is Timor
In Northern Oz his units keep on marching too fast for my tanks...incredible! Another hex altough some heavy bombardment with a pair of betty daitai and dive bombers
There are only 2 units trapped at Lashio...probably the 1st and 2nd burma brigades. The rest of his army managed to get to Mandalay.
Unfortunately my paras did not manage to take Mytikyna at first attempt...tomorrow there will surely be some LRCAP there....but i will try another para drop.
I'd like to take Mandaly by the first half of Jan...let's see

what else?...everything quite in te pacific...a Naval unit is heading towards Lae, but nothing else.
I need to complete the Oz and Timor invasion before i can move those units in southern pac

The burma map...

I notice that you are using version 3 of my map, not version 3b. In version 3b the link from Bangkok to Moulmein was changed from a railway to a trail (as it should be). That probably explains the problem with Canton as well.

Andrew

This is not correct. I am using map 3b, scenario 3c and between Moulmein and Bangkok there is a rail line.

EDIT: I take that back: I was confused. I was thinking a rail line between Moulmein and Rangoon. Silly me.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/04/42

Ok, it's clear that he's one step forward me. Every single move i make he has a ready countermovement. I think he knows me too well.
Today was a day of aerial combats.
25 allied planes shot down vs 20 japs'......not a good result indeed. 6 nells and 3 zeros are the losses that hurt more...
He had a LRCAP over Mytykyna....and my transports got slaughtered. and then he sent some b-17 there to bomb my paras....the shock attack did not achieve anything. Now i gotta leave them alone...there...behind the enemy lines
Yenen hit again...but since the next turn i'll have 30 oscars there...this should help a bit
Slow progresses both in Burma and Malaya.
After the capture of Samarinda we're now moving towards Balikapan
The Sian encirclement proceeds very slowly
he keeps sending ships and troops to Timor....probably 2 divisions won't be enough:-(

At daly waters his troops managed to arrive finally...mine are still 120 miles far away....unbelievable! Now i'll have to fight for that base....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/05/42

Almost incredible...my paras at Mytikyna, even if heavily pounded by allied bombers and not supplied by any transport, managed to give a final assault to Mytikyna and conquered the base! this was the signal: now the army is marching towards Mandalay!
In China i'm stuck with the 59 miles out of 60 bug....3 anti-partisans units cannot get to the crossroad where the chinese partisans are, blocking my supply lines...what can i do????
My baby Kb spotted some TFs at Lauterm and attacked at 5 hexes....2 zeros lost and 3 kates.... Seems like Timor is really becomming a fortress...i sent my BBs there to see if we can manage to shut down the Lautern AF
In Northern Oz the race against the Ex-Darwin garrison continues...
Today i lost 22 planes...14 of them shot down by flak or by fatigue...i checked and saw that most of my bombers in China are badly fatigued...gotta give them some rest. i Transfered my daitais to Canton, where there are plenty of supplies so that i can fulfill those groups with replacements

Nothing more to report

I'ld be curious to know as well. It is only Jan. 5 and he seems to be building Timor already. Maybe he is moving units that might otherwise go to Java to Timor? Certainly there can't be much in Northern Oz to move?

I have to say that i do not have any specific recon squadron in the area, so i can be wrong due to the effects of FOW. But my mavis are higly experienced and i believe them: 20 units and 100 ships at Koepang!...About Lautern i do not have the same recon...but i've just seen how many fighters are there, so......so it's possible to think that there are troops also there.
But 20 units are a lot! If i remember correctly at this stage the allies do not have enough PPs to move troops from , let's say Java or DEI, to Timor....so probably these LCUs are commin' from India...attached to the South East Asia theatre...and this means: the 18th UK division, the Carabeneers..the 154(??) Indian Tank regiment...etc....way too much to face with nly 2 divisions:-( But it's only 5th Jan! The 18th could not be already at Timor....do not know, really

I forgot to tell you something important: the BB Tennessee finally sunk...4 hexes far from San Francisco...those 2 torpedoes from my I-9 sub were a meal too heavy for her stomache...and this is the first important allied ship sunk so far....well...till now i've sunk really very few ships...that's depressing both in terms of morale and victory points

Today i have some spare time, so i'll post some more thoughts about the ongoing war

As stated before, the main concerns are now Timor and Daily waters. I need to get both in order to consolidate my positions in Northern Oz and then shift to another target.
In Malaya i hope Singapore will fall in one month. If i manage to get over Singapore in a resonable time then i can transport the entire 25th Army to Java. The 4 divisions that took Darwin won't be used for Java. I'd like to leave one division at Daily waters, along with tanks and engeneers, building up a 3 level AF there and place some zeros and sonias in order to keep him honest if he decides to force these positions. 2 divisions will be used for PM and NG along with the South Sea Detatchment and some minor naval units.
At the same time Buin and Shortland must be build enough to place there some Fighters and bombers.
I'd like to get to PM by mid march 42. After PM i have to consider if sending back those 2 divisions for the Mini-Hangover or to Luzon, in order to close the PI campaign.
The real problem is that time for Mini-Hangover is running out...the more i wait the more he gets stronger. He has already massed 80 heavy bombers at Chungking...and some 100 fighters in Eastern India...the AVG is still intact... I must gain some time and delay his defensive operations...
Another Key theatre is China. Now i'm forced to keep there a HUGE air army. Thse planes would be really helpfull somewhere else ( nothern Oz for ex)..but i need to break his defences in order to get a deep penetration and force him to retreat. My hopes rely now on the Sian theatre. Next turn my troops will enter at Sian, so stopping the production of supplies there. While some units are advancing towards Lungchow and some more are trying to flank Sian....cutting the connection with Chungking. But, even if i succeed in this it will take a long time...have to bring some more zeros here

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/06/42

.....what a risk! My BB TF lost some time due to an night encounter with a fleeing AP....when it arrived at Lautern the sun was shining....and some Torpedo bombers attacked!!!! I was panicked!!!...luckly my AA guys did their job and the bombardment went good with 23 allied planes destroyed on the ground!
Balikapan was occupied without any fighting...not a single allied unit is stationing in Southern Borneo...very strange! Seems he has pulled everything back to Timor...but why?!...
2 CAs are moving from Koepnag towards Sud-west...so many ships in the waters around Timor...and strangely my betties do not want to attack
Rainy day in China prevented any allied bombing offensive...but he keep on taking pictures with his Hudsons of my bases....
I lost a sub today....intense naval traffic in the area between Canton and Palmyra...gotta be ready to do something here 'cause i cannot let him reinforce too much this theatre

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/07/42

Lucky me! ..... The break i gave to my bombers in China and Burma saved my day: a HUGE strike force of 100 heavy bombers arrived over my main air base in China
Hankov. The fighters that stayed there to defend the skies made a good job, shooting down 23 allied bombers in exchange of only 3 of mines. But it's clear that with 20 zeros and 30 oscars i cannot
defend my front lines in China: i need more fighters!! Some are comming, but i need some more oscars...and the production of
December has already run dry...for the moment my bombers remain at Canton relaxing:-)
Finally the force for the Timor invasion is ready. 2 Carrier divisions, composed each of more than 110 a/c, and 2 BB divisions will support the operation.
One hex far from Daly waters...3 units spotted there...let's hope not to find any surprise...
At Sian my attack in the hex east of Sian has been repulsed, but we manage to free and occupy the hex north-east of Sian and now an entire division is marching exactly on the road that connects Sian and Chungking
At the same time my troops entered at Sian. Here there are 125000 chinese. I have 150.000 men, so no way to fron assault. I'll keep on bombing and wait for my units to flank and sourround the place.
in 2 days there will be the first attack over singapore and Mandalay
Tomorrow we'll attack Davao and Clark fields.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/08/42

Today he spotted my invasion TFs near timor. He's already evacuating the port of Lautern. I was not sure wether if to chase those ships with my CVs or to protect the convoy. I decided i better not to risk pilots and ships in vain. it will take 2 turns before we reach Dili, where a SNLF will be unloaded. At the same time one of my BB division will bomb Lautern again. When Dili falls we'll move towards Koepang where my BBs will bomb the place before my troops will touch the shore.
In China the first bombardment at Sian went very good. In 2 weeks the city should be in a difficult position
