I've seen 688 Fast Attacks going at least 30 kts on the surface... Used to live outside of Groton, CT and we'd meet the fast attacks as they came in off patrols - lots of fun riding the wake of one of those bad boys.

If they can do 30 kts on the surface, they must be able to do close to 40 kts underwater (subs can go faster underwater as they have no "bow-wave" phenomenon to fight).

The "bow-wave" phenomenon is also why ships with longer hulls can go faster. A surface ship can only go as fast as the speed the produces a bow wave the length of the hull (unless it planes out of water like a speed boat or hydrofoil, in which case it has no bow wave to speak of.)

Thus for say, two ships with the same amount of power - one 150 feet long, the other 200 feet long: the shorter ship is going to produce a "bow wave" long before the 200 foot vessel. The extra power goes into deepening the bow wave for the shorter vessel, in effect pulling the ship deeper into the water and causing increased resistance - and no increase in speed once the "bow-wave" reaches the length of the ship.

The bow-wave is actually not just the "bone-in-the-teeth" but the curve of the wave along the length of the hull. If you see a smooth curve that starts at the bow, and ends at the stern, the ship has about maxed out on speed.
