After knocking a few heads in the Coral Sea, a Jap carrier force (carriers still unidentified) saunters up to Sorong via the Torres Straight and flattens another RNAS MSW (Warmambool)on the way

The only bright spot is the transports at PM unloading their troop cargoes before being hit and the P40's downed an equal number of Zeros.

After a sustained air and land assault, Rangoon fell on Jan 8. A large evacuation convoy was able to safely retrieve most of the defenders, but losses suffered by the convoy on the run in to Rangoon forced Brig Gen Farwell to make a difficult decision. 1st and 2nd Burma Brigades and some support troops stayed as a rearguard, as there was not enough lift cpacity to evaucate all. Nearly 12,000 Allied soldiers became POW's and 17 valuable, inoperable P-40's had to be abandoned on the field.

The enemy; however, paid a heavy price in aircraft and some 70% of the AVG's most experienced pilots escaped.

Mom;

I pulled some strings with my buddy Rico to get this past the censors. We are hard at work getting all the Com equipment ready for SouthPac at Noumea, but I do get one day off a week so I did some sightseeing. The card is a picture of the town hall. New Caledonia is a beautiful place and I am having a hard time getting used to women with bare bosoms, which is the habit of some of the locals. It sure isn't Idaho. Anyway, Adm Halsey, they call him the "Bull", came into Adm Ghormely's office today while I was wiring the shortwave. Boy, did he lay into Adm Ghormley. It seems he is bridling at orders to avoid contact and was itching to "kill some Japs". Adm Ghormley gave it back to him and said it was ordered from above. As for me, I'll take my $92 a month electrician's mate pay and leave the decision-making to the brass. Neither of them seemed to be having a pleasant day. Well, got to go now. I'll write as soon as I can. Say, any way you can send some licorice sticks?

Love;

Robbie

Hi Cap Mandrake, I agree this is the AAR par excellence. We're trying our modest best to keep up over in "brink of disaster 3x3 AAR" but, alas, I think we are completely outclassed.

I hope you don't mind if I use some of your general ideas indirectly as inspiration. I actually started labeling some of my "documents" as "top secret" before I even discovered you had been doing the same thing for a while prior.

Oh yeah, and the "years to come" thing... We're currently going at about 1 to 1/2 a turn per day, so I figure it could take as long as 5 years or more to complete our game! It's kind of amazing to think about. And the way the game is constantly evolving with reinforcement units and the like keeps things interesting to the very end I should think. I hope we can keep it up that long!

The words are fictional, but some dimwit or collection of dimwits really did waste 5 days arguing about overtime.

Dear Sir;

The materials portion of your contract proposal for the Singapore Northern Defense Positions Project is acceptable to His Majesty's Government; however, the proposed labor ovetime rate of 3x the standard rate calculated for any work on Fridays or past 18:00 is unacceptable. In the past, we have had agreements for a rate of 1.5x calcualted after 20:00.

Sincerely;

Sir;

May I remind the Col. that there is a large Japanese Army not 50 miles from us at this time. Surely, there is a sense of urgency that the task be completed.
This is not 1940. I must pay my workers more to forget their anxieties about their families. Food prices are triple the pre-war rates. Please, let us not haggle. Is this not Mr Churchill's wish?

Dear Sir;

Could we then compromise on double rate for overtime to start at 19:00?

Sir;

I have given you an honest bid which I regard as necessary to accomplish the project in the alloted time, a time which we are quickly consuming in this fruitless exchange. Surely, the exigency of the situation is evident to all? My bid stands unmodified. If you wish to pursue another contractor, please do so in the interest of the frightened residents of Singapore.

Dear Sir;

You are indeed a skillful negotiator sir. How about triple rate for overtime to start at 19:00 with 1/2 hour permitted for two meal breaks?

Sincerely;

Dear Sir;

Very well then, triple pay for overtime to begin at 18:00, but not a penny more. His Majesty's Treasury is not to be trifled with. Shall I expect your crews bright and early tomorrow then?

Sincerely;

Sir;

Tomorrow is the Holy Day sir. We will begin the day after. I concur that His Majesty's Treasury is not to be triffled with, but neither are 50,000 single-minded Japanese soldiers. Let us please move forward in a most efficient manner.

So that's why Singapore fell! Not because Percival surrendered, but because the fortifications work was tied up in red tape. Learn something new everytime I come here...

Funny you should mention that...the skipper of the real PT 41, Lt John Bulkeley, went on to become quite famous and rose to the rank of Admiral

He commanded the boat (PT 41) and flotilla that evacuated MacArthur and his family

Capt,

Have said before I love your AARs. I also take a look at the real life ships when they cross my radar scope in the game. It makes for some interesting perusing and surfing and you find all sorts of tidbits out.

I just sank I-8 in one of my PBEM games, and ran across a tremendous amount of stuff on the atrocities committed by her captain and crew during her real life cruises. Needless to say in my war, she won't be committing them.

Thanks for interesting reading.

MEMORANDUM

TO: G4 SWPacHQ, Townsville
FROM: Capt Basehart, Liason to RAAF, Darwin
DATE: Jan 24, 1942

Lewis;

Here is the information you asked for on the possible development of an SBD-capable airfield in the Aru group. With the aid of Dutch landowners, RAAF engineers have identified 2 possible sites, both on Trangan Is. in the Aru group that seem to meet the criteria:

1) Suitable for construction of a 3000 ft runway without substanial earth movement

2) Nearby anchorage able to accomodate vessels up to 25 ft draft

3) Indigenous water for force of 2000 with wells or cisterns

4) Within P-40E range of Darwin

5) No indiginous hostile sentiment

These are Gorner in NE Trangan Is and Kamp Mgabundanke at the southern tip.

Of these two, Gorner ahs a superior anchorage, but Kamp "M" hs a small existing rock and earthen jetty. Both seem to have remarkably low malaria threat.

As you are doubtless aware, the Eastern Banda Sea has become a dangerous place, with at least 3 fleet carriers and one CVL operating nearby. This alone may make our efforts moot. Se attachment
