Those old R class BBs have some of the best guns ever made, and they start with high (for the Allies) night fighting ratings.

They are a lot like George Foreman when he did his comeback fight in the late 80s/early 90s. Not what they used to be but still have a hell of a punch if your opponent is dumb enough to walk into it.

Hmm.. that's true. I'd always considered them sort of dumpy bombardment wagons but those guns ARE powerful and the ships are pretty hard to sink. Maybe I can force a surface combat off Sumatra... I'm itching to get the RN into battle.

Oh, and I almost forgot, a note to all: I am geting my wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow, so probably no updates for the next 4-5 days.

I'm functional again (for the most part), so here's a turn for you.

2/11/42

India/Burma: Not much combat here but I did get strong reinforcements! 7th Armoured Brigade and 7th Australian Div arrived today, plus an RAF base force and aviation unit pair.

The Aussies are going to Darwin - northern Australia is wide open right now. 7th Armoured will go to Dacca (on the rail line), as will the RAF units.

China: A unit I had marching to Sian decided to take the central highway via Hankow to get there. Not smart. End result is that it shock-attacked Hankow and now has no combat value whatsoever.

My reinforcements have reached Linfen, though.. it's 40,000 Japanese versus 65,000 Chinese. I think I can hold.

Malaya: Heavy attacks on Singapore from the air today, and his troops have arrived in the hex. Let's see how the first combat goes.

The Philippines: No change.

DEI: Zeroes swept Balikpapan and knocked down 4 of 10 Brewsters for no loss - only 2 pilots killed, though.

I upgraded an Aussie Hudson group at Bali to A-20s. The Hudson pool was running dry.

SWPAC: No action.

SOPAC: I started moving 6 S-boats and an AS out of Panama today. They should reach Papaete at about the time it becomes a level 3 port.

CENTPAC: Americal Division arrived, and a bunch of EABs and other stuff too. I need more escorts!

NORTHPAC: No action.

======

Sorry I'm so terse today.. I'll be more fun to read tomorrow, hopefully.

Alright, wheels are turning again.

2/12/42

India/Burma: Ramilles and Resolution arrived today with DDs and a CL, yay! They're off to join the Eastern Fleet at Columbo. I also received two bomber units. A lot of things shifting around in this theatre - a new airbase has been staked out at Imphal and troops are moving to support it soon. I won't be attempting to hold Mandalay this time; I don't have huge numbers of Chinese and the British are defending India too.

The airlift is doing well - 55th Chinese Division is partly assembled at Ledo and I recieved a new squadron of Dakotas today. Other Chinese divisions are marching overland, nearly to Lashio now.

China: He's brought up another division - 110th IJA - to Linfen, but it did not effect the numbers balance much. I still outnumber him here and I feel that I can hold. (Many of the units here have 60 or more experience from the fighting around Kaifeng.)

No action otherwise here.

Malaya: No action.. Singapore only requires a coup de grace.

The Philippines: Same situation. Manila is barely holding but the units there are surprisingly unfatigued. Disurption from his daily bombardments is increasing though.

DEI: Interesting here. No action today - well, SS Perch got hit by a few depth charges but should be fine. The DCs were dropped by IJN front-line destroyers though, not PGs and PCs, and recon is showing a LOT of activity. 4-5 large Japanese task forces are cruising southwest in the Celebes Sea, and what looks like a CV TF (Ryujo + friends I assume) is only 4 hexes from Balikpapan. I think that Balikpapan is the target, though I haven't sortied the PT boats there yet.

I'm sure I'll learn more by tomorrow...

SWPAC: No action - my Hudsons launched at the Admiralties and missed an AK; Kavieng increased to a level 1 airbase. I'm going to welcome Kavieng's new airstrip with a full-blast attack from Rabaul tomorrow morning.

SOPAC: Again, no action.

CENTPAC: Oglala is down to a low sys damage again, so the minelayers set forth! This time for Midway.

NORTHPAC: Nope, nothing, sorry.

===

===

======

Next update in a couple of minutes!

Palembang is up to 322 assault points now.

2/13/42

India/Burma: A few interesting things in this theatre today. Firstly, I decided to transfer a squadron of Blenheims from Madras inland to Hyderabad (so they wouldn't be vulnerable to bombardments), but I forgot that there are actually TWO Hyderabads on Andrew Brown's map. So the Blenheims are stranded at a tiny base near Karachi with no aviation support. Mildly annoying, I'll send them back tomorrow.

Also! I've formed a CV TF of Indomitable and Formidable. They leave Columbo today and head south towards nothern Sumatra. The ships will loiter a few hexes west of Sabang. I am hoping that either (a) they will be spotted and Cruft will try to counter, in which case they will flee or (b) they will catch an unprotected invasion TF near Sumatra. This will have to wait until Singapore falls though.

China: Our numbers are equivalent at Linfen now.. and that's not good. Yet even more reinforcements are on the way. Cruft retreated his exposed tank regiment so I've found new targets for my bombers (experience is going up!).

Malaya: Bombardments began at Singapore today! Looks like two divisions, Imperial Guards and 5th. Plus arty.

The Philippines: No change... when will he deliberate attack? I'm getting bored.

DEI: Ahh, my favorite theatre.

I was right about the enemy task force - his CVLs - today they launched a port attack on Balikpapan. I had nothing there except PT boats (he sank 2) and two small transports (hit one). That 250 kg bomb made a mess of my schooner..

A little farther east, Nells n' Betties escorted by Zeroes made an attack on Kendari. 10 Brewsters rose to defend and 9 of them were promptly shot down, although one Zero was claimed. Not much damage was done to the airfield, but ouch.

No other action in the theatre. CLs Dragon and Durban are leaving Soerabaja for Columbo - I have a surplus of CLs at the moment and D-class ships are just going to get sunk here.

SWPAC: Not too much action.. the sub base at Townsville hungers for fuel. I also finally have front-line fighters (P-40Bs) on the way north from Auckland to help defend the east coast of Oz. Oh, my airfield attack at Kavieng hit nothing.. back to naval!

SOPAC: No action again - spotted a sub a few hexes east of Papaete but I have no ASW forces in the vicinity. Poo.

CENTPAC: Again, no action - a lot of new convoys heading south though. Americal Division, P-39s, and engineers - all needed.

NORHTPAC: *yawn, stretch*

===

He bombed my boat.
===

More on the morrow!

The two Hyderabad problem was fixed but somehow became "unfixed" again. I will try to make sure it is corrected in the next update to CHS.

Ahh, I see. Thanks Andrew. It shouldn't be a problem as long as I pay attention...

Tom: I've already complained to Cruft about his bombing of my favorite.

And on with the show..

2/14/42

India/Burma: A deliberate attack at Moulmein by 33rd division accomplished nothing again - I'm pleased by the performance of the defenders. They're outnumbered more than 2 to 1...

China: Nothing unusual.

Malaya: More bombardments.

The Philippines: A deliberate attack today - it brings down the forts to level 1, but again the Japanese take lots of casualties and will probably need to rest again. Good good.

DEI: Much action here today!

First off he launched a large raid at my "strongpoint" at Palembang. 73 Sallies and 28 Helens escorted by 38 Oscars from Borneo and Malaya. Up to meet them were 32 P-40Es and 19 Hurricane IIbs. The Oscars had the upper hand in the beginning of the engagement, downing 3 or 4 P-40Es, but then the Hurricanes came into play and lots of kills were scored. My more experienced Warhawk pilots got in on the game, too, and the final tally was 16 Oscars and 13 Sallies destroyed for 7 Warhawks and 2 Hurricanes. A good performance I'd say.
Bomb damage at P.1 and P.2 was repaired before the planes touched down. All is well.

In the south, it looks like another task force is heading towards Balikpapan. This time my recon is showing DDs and AKs so I predict either a bombardment force or an invasion TF. As such I am blocking the "strait" which they have to pass through with my remaining 3 PT boats. My minelayers at Soerabaja are heading that way to lay mines at Balikpapan if possible, as well.

Only success in this area today was a Martin hitting a CL and destroying a 3-inch mount. Hey, at least they're hitting things...

SWPAC: No action here today.

SOPAC: Nope, nothing. Papaete should go to port size three by next turn, though.

CENTPAC: Again nothing.

NORTHPAC: Attu building fast.. I need searchplanes.

===

Today's losses... nice.

Newsflash!

Carnage in the air over Palembang... at least 30 aircraft fell to the ground, both Allied and Japanese, on the 15th. Many Oscars and Japanese bombers were downed, but Zeroes destroyed several of our Warhawks. A flaming Helen crashed into an operational oil derrick and a disaster was only narrowly averted by the bravery of the Dutch Stadswacht (Home Guard). Aircraft losses turned out to be roughly equal.

On the 16th 22 Zeroes swept over Palembang in an attempt to "finish off" our fighter complement there. Unfortunately for the enemy P.1 and P.2 had been reinforcement in the night by more Warhawks, Hawks and Demons and 13 Zeroes were shot down. 15 Allied fighters were destroyed today as well. Scattered wrecks of Zeroes, Oscars and Allied fighters litter the landscape...

More updates as the situation develops. Cruft has a day off and I have no school.

Another 13 Oscars smashed into the ground in and around Palembang proper today. However, enemy ships have entered the harbor (sweeping small channels through the massive minefields) and destroyed 14 Allied aircraft on the ground - 7 Warhawks, 5 Hurricanes and 2 Demons. In reponse, torpedo-bombers and Dauntlesses from Java have been flown in and will strike tomorrow. The minefields have not been entirely ineffective - the destroyer Murakumo hit one and was forced to retire in flames.

On the far side of Sumatra, the British Carrier force is slowly slipping south, hoping to catch enemy ships at Palembang with their Alabcores. More later.

Here's a situation update.

2/15/42-2/18-42

India/Burma: Another division arrived at Moulmein and auto-shock attacked.. once again lots of losses and 0-1 odds. I like! I'm sending 13th Indian Bde from Rangoon to reinforce. The numbers look bad.

Jacob van Heermskerk arrived at the Middle East, as well. Any ship I can get is nice.

China: He deliberate attacked at Linfen again, and again got 0-1 odds. I have several more units on the way, about 300 assault points worth to augment the 1800 already there. Forts are still going up too, and I have 18 I-16s on LRCAP to make sure he doesn't bomb. I think I can win here.

Malaya: More bombardments at Singapore, but no deliberate attacks.

The Philippines: Sadly, Manila fell to a massive Japanese shock attack on the 15th, with over 128,000 Japanese troops banzai charging the starving Allies. 67,829 Americans and Filipinos, including Douglas MacArthur, have fallen into Japanese hands. Dugout Doug was seen to cry like a little girl.

So, Luzon has fallen. Mindanao, incredibly, still holds out... but for how long?

DEI: Good lord lots of action.

As reported, over the last 3 days massive air battles have been waged in and around Palembang. On the 17th, 13 Oscars were destroyed, but several allied aircraft were caught on the ground by enemy bombardment ships. Dauntlesses and torpedo bombers, working with PT Boats, forced the enemy to turn and flee by the 18th, with some of our aircraft scoring significant hits (2 1000lb bombs into a destroyer, for example). We hope to do even better tomorrow.

Teloeketebong, at the southern tip of Sumatra, has been invaded. There is no garrison defending it so we expect the base to fall tomorrow - the merchant shipping anchored at the port is fleeing to Tjilitjap. However, the American CLs Marblehead and Boise are closing in with 4 destroyers in an attempt to disrupt the landings.. we'll see how that goes.

In the south, his troops began landing over the beaches of Samarinda today. More Dauntlesses, based at Banjarmarsin a few hexes from Balikpapan, have been breaking through his Zero CAP (mounted from Zuiho and Shoho) with heavy losses. They have scored 500lb bomb hits on two PGs and a MSW. More attacks will follow, including (hopefully) a large B-25 strike from Macassar.

The air war is really heating up. The Japanese will win in the end but I'm inflicting significant damage...

SWPAC: Two bombardments of Rabaul by a BB and two CAs have reduced the aircraft there to wreckage.. the remnants will be flying out to Port Moresby tomorrow morning. I expect a landing to follow soon.

SOPAC: Suva, after bombardments by IJN warships and more than a 100 Kates, capitulated today. The Kiwis have held out courageously for more than two weeks but with little supplies and no support their commander threw in the towel. Operation Neck Tie is a success for the Japanese, with both Fiji and Samoa in their hands. Their future goals remain to be seen...

CENTPAC: No action, although he's finally sending out ASW groups. They're ineffectually trying to depth charge my subs in the Marshalls. I'll move them around a little...

NORTHPAC: Attu is a size 2 airfield now, forts are coming up and the P-39s have arrived. Excellent excellent.

===

The situation in the DEI.

Scary bombardments!

2/19/42

India/Burma: An Oscar CAP appeared over his units at Moulmein today, downing a few Buffalos. Next turn I will be switching them out with my final AVG squadron.. the bomber MUST get through!

China: Nothing new here.

Malaya: Again, nothing new.

The Philippines: Are his. Well, except for a couple crap island bases and Cagayan.

DEI: Aerial resistance at Palembang ended today - at least for now. A big IJN cruiser force, 6 CAs and supporting ships, sailed into Palembang harbor last night and raked the airfields with their guns - 113 runway hits and a lot of airbase hits means my airforce has been mostly destroyed on the ground. No aircraft flew on CAP after this strike... I've started flying out the aircraft to Bandoeng and Soerabaja but it'll take a while because most of them are damaged. In the meantime, they're free targets on the ground.

The Brit CVs were spotted by a Babs, but I don't think he realizes what they are... no strikes launched yet. Teloketebong fell to the SNLF unit that landed there, as well.

Oh, Samarinda lost a fort level and will probably fall tomorrow. The news is harsh on the DEI front...

SWPAC: He's still bombarding Rabaul - there aren't any aircraft left there to blow up, sadly for him. No other news here...

SOPAC: I accidentally left retirement orders on for a couple of APs near Papaete and of course they attempted to charge back to Pearl directly through his CVs near Fiji. They were both sunk. I blame the captains, because they're dead.

CENTPAC: Nope, nothing...

NORHTPAC: Nothing new.

This week has been SO not good for the Allied Forces.

2/20/42

India/Burma: No action today, but the AVG is now in position at Rangoon to support the bomber strikes at Moulmein. I fully expect Oscars to be hacked out of the sky tomorrow. *folds hands expectantly*

China: I know have about 100,000 troops at Linfen to his 60,000. Situation stabilized, go me.

Malaya: Singapore falls! An 8-1 deliberate attack against my 5 forts seals the island's fate. Well, that was unexpected.. Manila, Singapore, and Fiji all in the same week! Plus the neutralization of Palembang and Rabaul airbases. Cruft must be riding high right now.

The cut off troops at Kuantan and Malacca have no supplies and fatigue is high (especially for the Kuantan guys, who have been bombarded continually by 21st Mixed Bde IJA).

The Philippines: Bombardments continue at Cagayan. More like CagaYAWN! Zing! Okay, I'm done.

DEI: More action here!

First off, paratroopers have landed at Jambi (on the road north of Palembang) and took it immediately. With the loss of Teloekbetoeng (correct spelling!) this has isolated the Palembang forces. When things look bad here I'll march them south to Teloekbetoeng and retake it, then attempt to evacuate the remaining troops by sub.

At Palembang itself, he launched another nighttime bombardment, but it was disrupted by my one remaining PT boat. Brave TM-13 hit DD Asashio with both of her torpedoes, sinking her, but was smothered under Japanese gunfire. Luckily the bombardment didn't do much damage so I flew out a few more planes today.. there are still a LOT of damaged ones on the ground.

In the South, his troops at Samarinda have not attacked again yet, although Balikpapan was bombarded by his cruiser force there (he sunk my ketch ). A-24s staging out of Banjarmarsin scored another success, hitting CL Natori with two 500 lb bombs and giving me an "on fire, heavy damage" message for their efforts. Yay! His CAP didn't fly today...

Dutch minelayers are heading for Banjarmarsin to lay their lethal cargo, and Bali was recently mined by a seperate group. I love mines.

SWPAC: Speaking of mines, he landed at Shortlands today! Sadly his destroyers detected the field and destroyed several mines. Ah well...

Fuel has arrived at Townsville, my budding sub base. The subs there refueled today and will probably set out tomorrow.

SOPAC: Papaete increased to a size 3 airfield - I have a LOT of engineers there - but other than that no action in this theatre today.

CENTPAC: Many goings on here and on the West Coast.

Today was convoy day at San Francisco - 8 convoys carrying 1 HQ (7th AF, for Christmas Island) one EAB (for Port Moresby) and 6 fighter and bomber squadrons for the South, Southwest and Central Pacific set out today. I have many more destroyers returning from their duties in CENTPAC heading for San Fran as well, so more convoys will be launched soon.

I've also begun to utilize my MSWs, PCs, PGs, DMSs and APDs - several convoys for the Central Pacific were escorted by sweepers and patrol craft, many of them Canadian. (Finally Ron )

NORTHPAC: No action here, but I'm pleased with progress here. As always I envision a greater strategic role for this theatre than IRL.

======

I forgot to grab screenshots, but if I had remembered you would have seen Natori getting hurt. Go read Cruft's AAR, he's probably gloating

2/21/42

India/Burma: The AVG did not do well against the Oscars and Nates! For once. A few Oscars and Nates damaged for the loss of 3 (!) Tomahawks and several others damaged.

This irks me. My Tomahawk pool is already almost constantly empty; I can't afford for them to underperform, too!

China: Nothing new here - but I've ordered large AVG sweeps of Canton and Hankow tomorrow. Perhaps I'll catch some Nates, or alternatively I'll get proof that the AVG has been neutered ;p

Malaya: Nothing new. I think he is going to deliberate attack at Kuantan soon. Malacca he will have to march to.

The Philippines: Again nothing new. Still lots of units reported at Manila and the icon is a deep red.. bet he's scrounging for APs!

DEI: Boise and Marblehead return to Tjilitjap, having found nothing. The British CVs inch southwards... naval search reports basically no worthy targets right now so I'm keeping them out of sight and out of mind.

I still have 60+ damaged aircraft at Palembang airfield... that bombardment REALLY hurt!

SWPAC: Well, one of his transports hit a mine at Shortlands before he captured it (Akagi Maru), so I consider it a successful venture. The minelayer is now mining the base on the northern point of New Caledonia, I can't remember its name.

SOPAC: Sasebo 7th SNLF lands at Nanumea and captures the empty island.

CENTPAC: No action here except for lots of minelaying, this time aimed at Palmyra and Christmas Island. All my bases in this theatre will soon have 1000+ mines and at least 300 assault points on defense. I'm starting to feel secure.

Lots of Fortresses flown into Christmas Island. Canton is just barely out of their reach... rargh!

NORTHPAC: Another load of crated P-39s approaching Attu. My next planned base in this theatre will be at Kiska, which has high SPS values and is roughly in between Dutch Harbor and Attu. That way I can cover the entire Aleutian chain with LBA.

Sorry about the slowness of updates - I've completed my mod! Cruft and I will probably begin a joint AAR to advertise it in the future...

In the meantime, though,

2/22/42-2/24/42

India/Burma: A deliberate attack by 33rd and 55th Divs at Moulmein brings the forts down to zero but again inflicts heavy casualties. I won't stick around and wait for my troops to be retreated - we're heading north. Rangoon will be defended solely by Rangoon force and its high fort level; as soon as he takes Moulmein the base force, the AVG and the Blenheims will pull out.

China: Just enemy bombardments at Linfen. A few units decided to try to get from Changsha to Sian via Hankow (?!) so I have redirected them northwards and will steward them all the way there.

Malaya: No changes here.

The Philippines: He has landed at and taken Iloilo, leaving only two Allied bases remaining in the Philippines - and one is a dot hex.

DEI: Things have gotten a bit quiet here. In the north, I'm mostly occupied with pulling aircraft out of Palembang as they repair. I've also turned around Formidable and Illustrious - there simply aren't good enough targets anymore and besides, risking my CVs with only Fulmars and Sea Hurricanes on CAP was probably a bad idea. Fuel was running low so back to Columbo they go.

I've also been considering pulling the Prince of Wales and the rest of the surface fleet out. There's not too much they can do in the face of total Betty and Nell superiority.

In the south Samarinda is just barely holding. They somehow repulsed an SNLF attack at forts zero today, so perhaps they'll last until tomorrow.

I am trying to figure out a way to evacuate the base force and defense unit I freed up for Kendari without losing ships...

SWPAC: A lot of convoys full of aircraft and troops are floating around in Coral Sea, destined for eastern Oz and PM. Townsville sub base is now fully operational - port size 5 plus an AS. Current complement is about 6 submarines, which have sailed north towards Tulagi and New Britain.

SOPAC: Nothing too exciting here.

CENTPAC: Not much change from my previous post, but my Pearl Harbor BBs on the west coast are repairing splendidly. Arizona is at 22 sys, Oklahoma 28, Nevada 26, Tennessee 27, California 36, Maryland 15 and West Virginia 14! Pennsylvania is the only real bad egg with about 70+ damage but she will soon have an entire dockyard at Seattle to herself.

NORTHPAC: Nothing new.

======

We have entired a quiet phase...

This AAR is going to be on hold while Cruft and I playtest my scenario, Iron Storm (see the AAR).

But rest assured we have not abandoned the game! When the playtest hits January or so (perhaps earlier), we will come back kicking.
