Small problem with my Destroyers.

A. S Class really stink !!!
B. So do FD'ers but at least they have Torpedoes
C. Most of my Fleet DD's upgrade in October 53 out of 75 DD's go in for refit.....

I would kill for some Tribals to give the RN DD force some bite. IMO the best RN Destroyers all retained for the Med and Home Defence unfortunately

I get stuck with Electras (minus Radar sets) the J's P's and Aruntas are ok but I only have 7 of them..

I am operating 9 x 8 DD Flotillas screening my fleet with only 3 spares to rotate for upgrade.

I may need to just accept that October is going to be a quiet month for me as I go through an upgrade cycle

In 41 days the flood gates open and I start to get Fletchers probably the best Allied DD I get 10 Torps and 5 x 5" and the only Allied armoured DD A handfull for any IJN DD.

Only the RN's Tribals are even close 4 Torps 6 x 4.7" and 2 x 4" with a slight edge on manoeverability

The Fletchers have the edge though the armour really makes a difference as does the 5" being DP's !!!!

Bad day for the allies.

My cheap attempt at Akyab failed as my forces are shifted out but Im not that bothered I wil be back in force.

Did a rview of my Cruisers and DD's and on balance > 60% of the fleet will need to upgrade in Ocober I am going to take a calculated riskl and rebase the fleet to Pealr.

It leaves South Aus and SOPAC exposed but the IJN is quiet at moment so I will take the risk.

To all you allied playrs out there the full ramifications of losing Perth are actually quite nasty.

My Australain Ports are not secure and increased garrisons are required in all South Australian Cities and at Aukland it is a monumnetal pain something will need to be donw before the turn of the year.

Japs ambush my raid over Mili and I lose a few B25's and B17's

Andy

Hmmm an interesting one I always assumed the USN CA's and CL's were the best as they tended to be more modern albeit inexperienced.

Now I am not so sure.

The SC radar is inferior to the RN's 271 so prior to the upgrade I would rate the New Orleans Class (1 extra 8" plus an impressive amount of armour) as perhaps equal to the Australia/London and Norfolk class ships (less armour 1 less gun 100 less AA points but good radar and decent torpedo battery and actually the exeter isnt to bad with an impressive torpedo broadshide for a CA !!!). The armour on the Northhamptons is what lets them down a little the lightest armour of any CA's and less than most CL's

In DD's the USN force is clearly superior partly because the best RN DD's doesnt appear in theatre but the various USN DD's are clearly better.

In CA's the difference isnt as stark.

In CL's the difference is wider with Brooklyn cleary the winner then probably the Southhampton class followed by Helena arguably the Enterprise class is next because of the mammoth Torpedo battery and high Manouverability (but pitifull AA) although the Perth isnt bad torps decent AA and 271 radar set.

(omahas probably beat them all as when sank they return as Brooklyn or Cleveland class ships ;))

Anyone else have any views on this

Aye I guess I was amazed that the RN CAs were so close I guess the Batmore would blow any pre war CA out of the water though.

I wonder why the USN stopped carrying Torps on Cruisers only the Omaha's carry torps it does weaken them in Surface combat engagements

I am seeing rear are movement of japanese forces I think my time in the north is at an end...
Sian is just not worth getting another army cut off for I am withdrawing to the wooded hex one back where I will dig in and wait.

The forces at Akyab are going to get pounded and pounded and then pounded some more !!!!!

Good practice in CAS for the battles to come I will switch the heavies to Airfield and Port soon and send in Mitchells and FB's at treetop level to Frag them

Heheh I have just reached the end of my 3rd A4 note book playing PBEM's I begin to think I plan to much !!!!

Op Hydra/ Thunderchild (to much War of the Worlds when I picked that one methinks !!!!) and Goblin versus PZB now Operation Waterloo versus Pauk not to mention Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto and Neptune against Sprior or Sledgehammer/Jackhammer and Triphammer against String and lots of other ops against other players.

I really do pick the bad names

Hmmm my little carrier raid found no one at home...

Well objective achieved I have shown my Carriers again now a rapid withdrawel to Pearl for the October upgrade cycle.

The one thing I have learned from my game with PZB is the sheer quantity of supplies an fuel the allies need to forward stockpile to support and extended campaign like the Rabaul campaign or the current Hydra offensive.

Shunting supplies forward is a complete pain but it must be done and in no more than 6 AK/TK convoys or else a deep strike could be catastrophic.

After the October upgrade cycle is down my intention is re take Perth 1st before all else it cannot remain in Japanese hands

Andy

Its weird Pauk did well taking north Australia but the fact is I am well balanced and in pretty good shape in this game so far.

India/Burma

Air war is kicking off and I am intending on taking Akyab and Andaman Islands in the next 3 months, I am short on seapower in Indian Ocean so I need to be carefull. If Operation Waterloo is to be launched I need to re open secret sea routes back to India which means taking Perth.

I have 2 Corps available for overseas action and the prep points are rising but in reality nothing is going to happen apart from minor ops for the next 6 months and an air war.

SRA

My priority is to kill off my remaining units in SRA he is able to train his pilots to quickly on these bypassed units. I may need to commit subs again to try and stop his pilot training the existance of these bases is a major problem for me I need to stop his pilot training

Australia

Operations against Perth are being prepped by Aus 1st Corps which is assembling at Adeilade.

I DONT want to retake North Australia I would rather have 4 or 5 IJA Divisions tied down holding Australia than getting ready to face me in Malaya.

As a result I MAY attack Port Moresby just to try and rivet his attention on the North again but I dont mean it

SWPAC

Will be a quiet theatre in this game until late 43 I will make an attempt at PM but thats it.

SOPAC

Strong contender for my main US offensive as Pauk will be watching Marshalls like a Hawk

CENTPAC

The problem with a Centpac offensive against the Marshalls is shipping. Pauk will have loaded the atolls with troops and tanks with level 9 forts. In order to get ashore in one piece and take the bases I NEED to have assault shipping for 5 - 6 Divisons plus support in the 1st Wave and I wont have that until late 43.

I am in very good shape in CENPAC because of Tarawa and Apanama not to mention Baker so I am torn. If I attack and cannot land enough troops in the 1st phase my assault force will wreck itself in the initial attack. So I just don't know what to do I am seriously considering Wake which will have a Bde on it max perthaps with an NLF or 2.

I just don't know where to hit

Whatever I do I will to launch a delaying attack in theatre to give me options but the time of cheap and cheerfull low risk low cost assaults is over.

Famous last words !!!! CENTPAC in good shape then Pauk sweeps tarawa.

Ouch my Green Wildcat pilots lose 3:1 against his zeroes......

But thats 27 elite pilots that wont be eating rice tomorrow and my Pilot training schools have already replaced my Marine pilots with some more.

I NEED to shut down his pilot training in New Britain and the PI its just giving him to many good pilots no way should 50 - 60 xp zero pilots get 3:1 over Wildcats 80 - 90 yes so those pilots must be top of the line.

My subs are going back in to evac more of the units I am not doing this to rescue units but to try and shut down his pilot training its the only way I can justify the losses my subs will take.

Japanese assault on the Ichang road.

Was this his goal all along I cant believe it if yes then why telegraph it at Sian. I abandoned Sian based his moves in the North not an attack up the Ichang road.

Looks like good luck for me he could have cut me off had he not got me worried abot flanking me from Sian.

Going to try another FT landing 750 men of 5th Bn Burma Rifles of 1st Burma Rifle Bde at Akyab after heavy softening up from the air it will be interesting to see what the Japanese do will they react a second time or has my air bombardment convinced them that Akyab isnt worth fighting for !!!!

My Airpower in India really is impressive 3 US FG 5 US BG's pity he didnt attack India really (git !!!!)

I converted the newly arrived 343rd FG to P39D's making them hand over there P40's.

The P40's are being rushed forward to replenish sqns alreadt at the front.

24th FG in Burma now has all three Sqns on P40's
23rd FG still has Tomahawks
AVG has 33 Warhawks and will receive the bulk of the replacements

16 days until P38's start arriving then the offensive against Rangoon from the air really begins....

Your's in the best time game wise to be playing. From mid-42 to mid-43 is the best as both sides have sufficient forces to hurt each other and the Allies "finally" start getting better planes. After the F6F's and Corsair's arrive in numbers, it is mostly all down hill for the Japanese.
Tarawa may be bloody for the amount of aircraft loss, not the cost in ground units.

OK my lil invasion force went in 750 men stormed ashore into murderous fire from the not quite full suppressed Japanese NLF troopers.

B25's are going in with Frags at treetop level at Dawn and the Burmese levies have been ordered to attack.

B17's and B24's will try saturation bombing a little later P40's and F4F's have been ordered to sweep away the inevitable LRCAP.

Tarawa was a good result I captured really really cheaply and Pauk hasnt dared to try and take it back it could be a real springboard into the Marshalls.

Despite the loss of Northern Australia I feel I am dammed good shape in this game.

P38's 14 days and counting

Getting closer to the 10/42 upgrade that adds a lot to the USN

It marks the real introduction of 40mm Bofors to most DD's and CA's and the really nice (equivalent to the RN's 271) SG Radar once I have this upgrade cycle done I will be ready able and willing to seek out and destroy !!!!!

In additon I am starting to get Fletcher DD's which are damn near as good individually as some of the pre war Jap CL's with top notch AA to boot.

I am really short ofr Austrlian Corps HQ's

I would like 1 for the potential Amphib op 1 for an overland to Perth and a third for a northern diversion.

12 Divisions or equivalents of Australians and 2 Divs of NZers and only 1 Corps HQ for the lot

New house rule in China as I was getting concerned that Pauk was aiming for total annihalation of China and that with all my supplies gone I wouldnt be able to stop him.

I had to ask because if that was his game then I would have to react with a few questionable tactics of my own

Its not and we have agreed 1 Div of Chi Com army as a free transfer to Burma/malaya but Chengtu and Chungking are inviolate to japanese Ground Units.

Its a fair compromise in my view to keep the game in the spirit it has been played so far.

I really need to do something about Perth the RN portion of the Pacific Fleet is rotating between Aukland and Sydney at the moment a stronger British Commitment to the defence of Australia cannot be imagined

Indomitable/Illustrious and Formidable covered by 3rd Battle Sqn and 1st / 5th and 6th Cruiser Sqns and 2 x (Fleet) and 3 x (Escort) Destroyer Flotillas (To me escort DD's include FDers S Class and Vampire Class)

A powerfull force if not quite up to KB standards

I think I will leave 1 Destroyer Flotilla and a division of heavy and light cruisers from 1st and 5th Sqn at Sydney with POW as Flag the rest will retire to New Cal/Suva for the time being. (I have 7 other USN Fleet Destoyer Flotilla's with the US Pacific Fleet preparing for the 10/42 upgrade)
