Operatiion Sleep is a total success the island fell in 2 Days as 3 Divs stormed ashore !!!!!!

I monitored the3 casualties most of my units werent disrupted more than 20% and only 1 or 2 points of destroyed units in te assault echelon (most units are at 98 or 99)

I think the initial assault is the vital component as my initial shock attack got 2 : 1 so my divisions didnt get wrecked

That's the thing Andy, get a lot of troops AND supply landed on the first phase. That is why I liked using 100's of those LCTs. As you get loads of LSTs and other landing craft your amphip assualts get better. And like you said above, Armor units are extremely effective. I use them after taking the islands to eliminate the remaining troops. I put every INF division on bombardment orders and the Armor on deliberate attack. Seems to work well in conjunction with lots of TAC Air support. Time to make some large advances in Northern NG now? I aways thought that taking all of NG would give John some problems. You have a number of avenues of attack from there that he would have to spread out his defense. Most of 1943 and early 1944 has been spent attacking on pretty narrow fronts. It is time to get to a place where you can do a starburst type of multiple attacks. I predict that the second half of 1944 is going to be a lot of fun for you.

Yup the armour is great.

I am going to leave 1 Transport TF to redeploy troops in the Marshalls.

Every other amphib asset is now moving to Rabaul (SOPAC) and Lae/Gili Gili (SWPAC) for the assaults up NG and into te Palaus.

I may also assault the admiralties or Emirau as it has been bombed into the stone age and is a valuable base.

I will post my intentions soon but basically the next 4 months action will be in this theatre.

Add to that I am considering a carrier raid probably only as a diversion but watch this space.

All new Amphib assets that arrive in West Coast for next 4 months will go to Marshalls for next lesap forward.

2 new US Divs arrived today so with 4th USMC Div SOPAC is very strong (I also released a Canadian Div for front line service today) so that gives me 4 fresh Divs heading to the front now when they arrive in theatre the fun will be well in hand.

Thanks for tracking the casualties, Andy. Perhaps I could ask you to repeat the performance somewhere that offers a bit more of a fight?

Starting my realignment a couple of LCT's ate torpedoes which was unfortunate.

Amphib assets are moving to Gili Gili/ Rabaul and Lae it will take a few weeks to accomplish.

BB's are heading back to Pearl for a refit as most are 9 or 10 sys.

Iowa and New Jersey arrived today.....and are moving to join toi the Battle Line at Pearl my battleship force is growing steadily.

I am at full strenth in CV's with 10 US CV's and 9 CVL's in 5 TF's

Thats over 1100 carrieraircraft.

Well I am going to use them.

I am sailing North from Entiwock heading into the gap between Marianas and Wake IJN Carriers are reported still in the Palaus so I am going to see what trouble I can find.

I will stay 300 miles away from major bases so if he wants to come at me his fighters will be range limited and so won't swamp me.

Anyone know the extended range of Jacks Georges and Zekes ?

I would like to eliminate his bombers so all my bombers are on range three with 90% fighter CAP added to the new allied AA capabilities....proximity fuses I am stone cold certain I can take KB or LBA possibly even both !!!!

Guys been a few days since my last update.

I have been cruising around Marianas and Bonins trying to get Jap Naval Air to launch with 90% CAP and all bombers restricted to range 1.

It hasnt worked he isnt taking the bait.

So I am trying a speed run against a harbour in Japan it looks like Osaka has low cap and 200+ ships in harbour nd I am 10 hexes from range 4 !!!

10 hex speed run being attempted today lets see what happens

Mini KB took a beating a few days back and 3 CV's have been sank.

OK My plan didnt work My Carriers only went 7 hexes I wish the no's of hex travelled was accurate

Anyway I hit a few transports at Bonin but he knows Im cming now and Saratoga is gettign tight on fuel

So I am withdrawing back to the Marshalls I am extremely dissapointed that I couldnt get the full 10 hexes but on the other hand he will not leave rear area bases uncovered.

I cannot afford to have my LOC's interfered with so I am withdrawing my CV's to cover Marshalls - New Guinea gap and support SOPAC and SWPAC operations.

My Battle line (excl Iowa and NJ) will get two weeks leave in Pearl for refit and minor sys repair

Hmpf.. aren't you worried about your CV Fleet? That was an daring raid at Bonin Island , congrats

I would assume PzB has massed his LBA's and KB is still a reckon to be dealt with.

A few more days pass with not a lot happening I am redeploying air combat TF's and amphib assets to SOPAC.

I am sure he knows what I am up to but I plan on using overwhelming force.

Its slightly irritating that we both evacced kavieng I had hoped to keep him bottled up he now has his rapid reaction force back.

I am considering landings not in paralel but in close sequence to each other along the NG coast.

On reflection I have decided to open the offensive in NG and not through SOPAC

I may attempt a landing on Timor but only after I have managed to secure land bases in northern NG.

I estimate 2 weeks before the offensive christened "Hydra" is launched.

More details to follow after I have worked out force allocations and specific objectives.

Won´t you please not forgett to bomb Truk regularily? It seems to me he evacuated his troops via Truk and now? He might have put his troops into NG bases because it is the logical way for your attack. You now have to calculate with a division behind 9 forts in all important NG bases.

Sorry Frank but Truk is still a long way and the ops losses arent worth it.

He isnt defending the base and to close the AF given the supplies and engineers he has there I would need to bomb it with c 200 bombers a day and I am not willing to commit to that kind of campaign as I would neet to exhauset my P38J's to escort to avoid a hit and run by PZB.

I will close it again but only when I need to as part of a wider campaign.

Its a balancing act between over fatigueing my heavies (and especially my few LR Fighter Gps) and achieving my goals.

I am planning on a series of 3 Divisional assaults supported by tanks in range of my LBA. 1 Div wont stop me I hope.

I am planning on hitting Dagua, Aitape and one other base yet to be determined.

I have 1st, 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th Aus Divs plus 1st Aus Cav Div/ 3rd NZ Div/ 1st US Cav Div/ 43rd US Div/ 3rd and 4th USMC Divs plus 2 Divs worth of independent Bdes and 28th and 93rd US Div and a Canadian Div on the way

So 2 Marine Divs, 7 ANZAC Divs, 1 CAN Div, 4 US Divs and 2 Mixed Divs of misc Bdes and numerous armoured regts

NG will be spearheaded by my ANZAC Forces commanded by 1st AUS Army.

My 2 USMC Divs will be held for SOPAC offensive exact allocations will be worked out in the next few days

Do you think reducing the ports to rubbles won´t help you?
This would reduce the supply at the bases (by hits and by repairing) and it would make unloading lasting a lot longer so you could hit the ships unloading and destroy this supply, too.

In yout situation destroying the port is imho preferable to closing the airfield.

Port is the same I would need to bomb it every day to keep it closed (there are a lot of engineers at Truk) I will do this when I have to but bombing AF's in northern NG to keep forts down is more important at the moment IMO

A bold plan but...

are you able to keep all the attacks supplied ?
Do you have enough minesweepers to support all your attacks ?
Are you able to supress Truck ( for V and VI ) ?

Supply is adequate and my MSW force is strong. I dont anticipate huge minefields except on phases V and VI but I will ensure that I have enough MSW assets to be safe.

I have aimed to use c 1,000 AV on each attack c 700 from 2 Divs per assault with armour and independent Bdes making up the balance on each force.

All Divs are prepping for the correct objective and I am expecting to begin loading in 3 - 4 days.

Truk can be neutralised at will it is just costly to do.

I have about 1,000,000 tonnes of supply at sea in various small convoys on there way to Rabaul so I anticipate supply levels being adequate for this offensive.

I and II are actually the key if I can seize AF's in central NG then Northern NG is undefendable by PZB.

A few more sub contacts as the first 2 Hydra invasion TF's approach there targets.

I have about 5 Divs assault loaded and about to hit the beaches in Aitape and Dagua.

60,000 men and tanks I may have my force appreciation wrong Aitape looks to be better defended than Dagua so lets hope I brought enough I would hate to have to raid the later Hydra ops for men this early !!!!

I should point out that I am really not expecting much from PZB on Phase I or II its to far from his bases and to close to my LBA and he knows not to tange with B24's and B25's escorted by P38's

OK the Hydra II landings at Aitape are a success more casualites than I would like and a very concerning night attack on my carriers my heart was in my mouth I am strengthening my night CAP a lot but I have to confess I am worried.

Hydra I landing commence tomorrow at Dagua.

Those night emily attacks have me very worried about what I could face later in the campaign.

I have 1 NF Sqn on board HMS Formidable and I have placed several day fighter sqns to support them as if I was PZB I would come back at me with everything I had tonight.

All ships are closed up at action stations and praying for a stormy night (except the poor sods landing at Dagua !!!)

3rd NZ Div and 1st Aus Div got ashore in reasonable shape and they are resting for a few turns before attacking
