Status: offline 		In WITP the phillipines were needed to be taken out to prevent allied airpower from disrupting the supplies of resources from the DEI. Why not just bypass it in WPO since airpower isnt a big deal.

Status: offline 		Mainly VPs. As WPO games, well, the real WPO, The PI are key. The entire US strategy was built around holding/retaking the PI. Besides, in this game its about naval/land/air combat, not so much for resources. Yes, you can bypass the PI (I have intentionally made this possible). However, VP wise, you'll need to get a lot more ground than just taking the PI.

Status: offline 		My "backyard" is the whole of what later became known as the Southern Resource Area.

Yes, Allied airpower is non-existant, but US seapower in the Philippines, however limited, isn't. That's why you can't bypass Luzon; same thing goes for the French, and to a lesser extent, the Dutch. The British aren't a big threat at the outset, since the Royal Navy's big units haven't arrived yet.

As for China, that's an objective too, but not a super important one, at least not in the first round of fighting. There are a number of US, British and French LCU's there, but what are they going to do? The Japanese lack of possessions in China is actually a positive aspect; the Allies will take control of Shanghai (there's only 1 SNLF there), but big deal. Let them have it. I can always get it back later.

In the Central Pacific, the idea is to defend as far forward as possible. The USN's big ships haven't the range to storm across the Pacific to the PI, so they'll have to have a string of bases on the way for refuelling stops. The original chain was Pearl-Midway-Wake-Guam-Manilla, and the Japanese player has to decide just exactly how far out he's willing to stretch. Since airpower isn't a factor, he can probably go a step further forward than in WitP, but that depends on how brave or foolhardy he feels. Submarines are an issue, of course; the US gets oodles of them, and their torpedoes actually work! Well, most of the time...

I haven't got WPO yet and may not until after Xmas. Tankerace included me as a ship's captian. The British destroyer Sharpshooter if I recall correctly.

Does this ship start in the scenario or is it part of a scheduled arrival at some later date?

Nothing much to report for today. Imperial Intelligence was able to confirm the sinking of the two surviving enemy gunboats from yesterday's massacre... erm battle off the entrance to Manilla Bay. In other news, our valiant destroyers located a US Navy submarine off the western shore of Batan Island, and pounced on her with depth charges. While a sinking could not be confirmed, we are certain to have damaged the enemy vessel severely.

On land, Dadjangas in southern Mindanao was liberated by our victorious army.

Status: offline 		Today saw the first major land action of the campaign to retake the Philippines. The town of Davao, on Mindanao Island, previously garrisoned by approximately 8,000 soldiers of the Philippino Puppet Government and their American masters, was liberated by forces of our Southern Wing, after a battle that lasted most of the day. The enemy troops were last seen fleeing north along the road to Cotabato.

Meanwhile, on Luzon, Tuguegarao and Laoag fell to our troops.

Elsewhere, US submarine S-8 was again detected in the waters west of Batan Island, and again vigorously prosecuted by our heroic destroyers. It's only a matter of time before the American undersea pirates dive for the last time.

In the Central Pacific, Imperial Navy shells rained down on the American outpost of Wake in the early afternoon of the 6th. Artillery spotters report a thorough blanketing of the island, with several secondary and tertiary explosions reported.

Status: offline 		Well Davao fell as I suspected. Despite misleading Japanese propoganda SS S-8 is bearing up well and plotting revenge from the deep. Australian units on red alert after intelligence reports of Japanese movement in the Truk area. The shipyards of Great Britain are working around the clock and expect to produce a number of modern Royal Navy vessels in the coming months.

Status: offline 		In the pre-dawn darkness of June 7th, Imperial Army troops went ashore on Wake, in the middle of a blinding rainstorm. Finding the island garrisoned by a little more than 1,000 support troops of the enemy's "Army Air Service", the outcome was never in doubt.

On Luzon, the Americans and their lapdogs abandoned their airbase at Clark Field without a fight. These cowards are truly not Samurai!

At the moment, the biggest problems of our Philippines campaign is the lack of infrastructure: it takes too long to march our victorious forces across the woefully underdeveloped roads and trails of Luzon and Mindanao. Don't worry, Yankie, we'll get to you soon enough!

Status: offline 		Another semi-quiet turn. An Imperial submarine found the snooping Chinese cruisers north of Formosa, and commenced the attack. A Japanese torpedo found the flank of the Hai Chou, but was unfortunately not enough to put her under. Perhaps it will slow her down...

Elsewhere, our troops continue to be hampered by the lack of proper roads on Luzon. Still, it is only a matter of time before the decisive liberation of that island!

Status: offline 		Another quiet day. A new submarine was detected last night, this time southeast of Batan Island. Again, it slipped away.

In Shanghai, local intelligence assets report that at least one enemy ship has fallen victim to a minefield laid there several days ago.

In the Philippines, our army units are still getting into position to resume the offensive. There's a distinct atmosphere of impatience at the General Staff over this delay...
