The month of October 1775. Putnam with a brigade of troops sets sail from New York City during the second week of the month on a special mission. In the meantime, Sullivan with a division of troops had marched out of Springfield overland for Boston as British troops approached the town from the south. And, Lamb's militia that was garrisoning Springfield moved overland for Providence, R.I. A final thrust into the Massachussets/Rhode Island area comes from the north with Smith and his Militia out of Portland advancing on Portsmouth. On the third week of October, Sullivan attacks and captures Boston inflicting 157 casualties to his own 62. Meanwhile, Lamb's militia troops take Providence. And, on the fourth week, Putnam lands and captures Newport, R.I. The only downside to the month's operations in the north was that Smith's militia was unable to take Portsmouth having been fought to a draw by Skinner's Tories; and, Lamb's militia had to abandon Providence when faced with encirclement. The 8th Dragoons, under Lee, continues to engage the indians in and around the Creek indian village. It changes hands a couple of times with the Rebels finally pillaging the village chasing the indians away. By the end of the month, the 8th was exhausted and ended its campaign heading home. Charles Lee, along with Benedict Arnold, continue to engage the indians in New York; capturing and pillaging the Mohawk village. Arnold's forces drive on to the Onondaga village and capture it. Davidson's militia troops advances on and captures the Shawnee village. No colonial settlements have been successfully raided. The non-friendly indian tribes are definitely being shown the error of their ways. Overall, it was the best month of the colonials fight for independence to date.
