-A bad day for Japan, as PT boats damaged seriously one of our DD (she will probably sink) in exchange for one PT. The PT´s also disrupted the planned bombardment, which caused little damage. Meanwhile, an ineffective raid by Betties and Nells from Shortlands resulted in one F4F, 2 Nells and 2 Betties lost.

-A better bombardment run resulted in some losses to the allies (1 PT sunk and 2 DD heavily damaged). The bombardment was also more effective, but given the disproportion between the involved forces, Yamamoto isn´t very happy. In the air, the allies are taking a beating both in Burma and Guadalcanal.

-Rabaul was heavily hit by enemy heavy bombers. Lots of ships damaged in harbor, but the enemy paid a heavy price for the success, with the loss of 39 planes, including 9 heavies. Japan lost only 8 Zeroes, but 12 Ki-45´s. With an A2A score of 0x29 against P-38´s, the Ki-45 built a poor reputation among aircrews, being nicknamed "the flying coffin". The IJAAF HQ ordered the retreat of all Ki-45´s from Rabaul in order so save the lifes of remaining aircrews....

-My intention was to use Ki-45´s against poorly escorted 4E raids, but they weren´t very useful in this role, another purpose was to allow the Ki-45´s to take the losses while the Zeroes jump in the P-38´s, this works well, at least in Nik mod. Big trouble is the heavy crew losses suffered by IJA...bring the Tojos...

-Lots of damaged ships in the last two days. Up to now Japan is winning big in Guadalcanal, as far as ship losses are of concern. No Japanese ship was lost, while the colonialists lost 4 DD´s, 1 CL, 1 CVE and dozens of minor ships. In that turn, Betties and Nells from Shortlands attacked a surface group south of Shortlands, the ships were heading to Gilli Gilli, CL Phoenix was sunk and another two CA´s were damaged. The attack had a high price however, as 13 land based bombers fell prey to the enemy AA guns. Meanwhile, Japanese ships made another ineffective bombardment run against Lunga. One enemy PT sunk in exchange for Mogami heavily damaged by an enemy sub

02/25/43-00:30h CA Kumano-20 miles from Lunga point

Admiral Tanaka: When will we reach the position to bombard Lunga airbase?
Kumano Commander (Capt Hisamune): In 15-20 minutes
Officer entering the bridge....Admiral, enemy ships on sight
Admiral Tanaka: What kind of ships?
Officer: Our spotters counted at least two cruisers and eight destroyers, but they also saw what seems to be a battleship
Admiral Tanaka: A battleship? How in hell the enemy is placing these monsters at the range of our Betties, and withouth fighter cover
Capt Hisamune: They would never send these ships withouth Carrier cover

02/25/43-3:30h-Command bridge of Hiryu-300 miles North of Guadalcanal
Admiral Yamaguchi: I hope you have a good reason to have waken me up so early...
Capt Kaku (Hiryu commander): Well, we received this strange report from Admiral Tanaka, from bombardment group, he considered it important enough to brake radio silence....
Yamaguchi: Battleships in Lunga? Reports are that Lunga don´t have more than 8 fighters.....who will protect them? Something really important is probably happening.
Capt Kaku:So...
Yamaguchi. Let us start to refuel and arm our aircraft in 30 minutes. I want a full strike ready to take off at 6:30h. Order the battlehips to launch their floatplanes at 6:00h
Capt Kaku: But there is another trouble....Tanaka sent us a follow up message after the first one. He told us he sunk a battleship but his ships were badly defeated. He is asking for fighter cover to his damaged ships.
Yamaguchi, well, if there aren´t carriers in the area, he has nothing to fear, otherwise, the best cover we can offer is sink the enemy carriers.
Capt Kaku: Should we head South?
Yamaguchi: No let us stay here, maybe we can get the distance advantage...

02/25/43-8:00h
Yamaguchi: How is the attack launching going?
Capt Kaku: All planes already launched. We retained half of the Zeroes for fleet defense, currently, we have 50 in the air, but now that the flight decks are free, we can launch more of them

Zero pilot#1:Are you seeing the enemy planes?

Zero pilot#2:I don´t know....never saw them before...the look like...biplanes
Zero pilot#1:The colonialists are really desperate to send biplanes against us....

Betty pilot: I just would like to know why we are being sending unescorted against enemy carriers?
Betty co-pilot: They told the enemy ships are likely to be damaged and defenseless after our carriers hit them , so it would be easy to sink them with minimal losses, they also gave some excuses about the necessity to give air cover to Tanaka ships...or what remained of them....
Betty pilot: Look, there are the enemy ships, two carriers seem to be burning....
Betty co-pilot: What about fighters?
Betty pilot: Cannot see them...
Betty squdron commander: It seems the carrier boys had all the fun, be we still could take that big Battleship.

11:00h-Onboard Hiryu
Yamaguchi: Is the recovery of airstrike completed?
Capt Kaku: Almost completed, Akagi and Hiyo are still recovering planes, and we will keep the flight decks of Junyo clean just in case of delayed damaged planes. Kaga flight decks are operational despite the damage.
Yamaguci: What are our pilots reporting?
Capt Kaku: It seems that losses were very high, at least 60 bombers were lost and lots of survivors are being written off after damage. We will hardly be able to launch a one third strenght attack
Yamaguchi: What about enemy losses?
Capt Kaku: The enemy seems to have three carriers in the area. Two were badly damaged, possibly sank, however, survivors of the first wave told us they saw a BIG carrier, bigger than any other the USN had, and it was undamaged. Our CAP pilots also identified a few Swordfishes among the attackers. It´s possible that a British carrier is in the area too.
Yamaguchi: So the enemy will lose another carrier battle. Prepare all the remaining planes for another strike!

-The aftermath: The USN fleet was destroyed again. Japanese carriers achieved another significant victory. The price, however, was huge, as 170 carrier based planes, and their crews, were lost forever. Japanese surface forces also suffered. Two destroyers sunk and at least two another CA´s and DD´s are in such conditions that won´t survive. The enemy lost 2 BB´s, 3 CV´s and had a number of ships damaged.

More analysis latter. Nik was able to send 130 planes, including 75 torpedo bombers, in a single attack. Why did he achieve almost nothing???? Overall, there was a big imbalance between forces. I had 500 planes (plus the Betties/Nells) against 300 from Nik. Did the uncoordinated attacks made the difference again? Given the disproportion of forces, a Japanese victory was more or less certain, but a loopsided victory like that is strange....

Why do you consider the result to be strange? The Game always "rewards" the side with more planes in the air in a battle. The Japanese side had more fighters than the Allies in each of the air battles. Therefore, the Japanese won the air battles cleanly. The Game has always performed that way.

If I put 70 P-40Bs into the air against 30 Zeros, The P-40s will blow the Zeros from the sky. If I put 16 Spitfires into the air against those same 30 Zeros, the Zeros will wipe the Spits. That's just how the Game handles things.

That's why it is so critical to always have total air superiority over a battle, or not fight at all. And since fighter pilots don't get "tired" or "out of ammo" in air battles, You can't wear down a CAP of 100 planes with sequential, smaller attacks. (That's how it worked in PacWar, but GG changed it for UV and WitP.)

In the end, if the Allies want to stop 500 Japanese carrier planes, they have to find a way to put 700 planes in the air over that carrier fleet at one time. (I've got to think that something like 400 B-25s and 300 Corsairs is the way to go... )

Should the Game be this way? Well, that's another discussion...

Should an Allied player send any CVs into battle before 1944? Well, that's even more of a discussion for a different venue.

In any event, congrats and enjoy - you played it well and you won a hard fought battle.

-I agree with you that a Japanese victory was expected, but I´m surprised with the extent of my victory. The enemy was able to place about 80 bombers over my fleet (those who survived CAP), but only 4 hits were achieved. Disruptionj of enemy attack by the huge CAP/AA is an issue...

-Japanese Navy leadership had a meeting to analyze the battle results. Yamamoto was euphoric (and drank a lot of sake) and told the officials that the war was lost by colonialists. However, Tanaka noticed that, while Japanese losses were minimal, lots of ships were badly damaged and that the continued bombardment of Lunga wasn´t feasible. Yamaguchi also noticed that the quality of Japanese carriers aircrews suffered a blow due to excessive losses and lack of trained replacements. Furthermore, Kaga and Hosho suffered moderate damage and would be unable to fight in the next months. Admiral Abe also was worried with the big reinforcements that the USN was able to bring to Guadalcanal. "Recon planes are noticing an almost daily expansion of airfield facilities and lots of air activity".

-Our Ki-15´s are reporting a fantastic expansion of Lae instalations. They noticed a paved runway and lots of new instalations. Seems to be like a city, they told the Shortlands commander. In a series of agressive sweeps, Zeroes from Shortlands destroyed 24 F4F´s over Guadalcanal. Seven Zeroes were lost. Hurricanes from Pagan were also targeted for sweeps.Overall, the enemy lost 41 planes against 12 Japanese.

No propaganda.......we got stomped, but we gained valuable real estate. I'm buying up more banana stock as we speak. I'll be rolling in dough soon.....and bananas.

(and on the bright side...the recent battle was very useful for the upcoming mod update.)

I'd rather wait till i finish the tests just to be sure. Some early indicators turned out to be wrong.

-Nik´s new update is surrounded by secrecy, however, I will openly lobby him for the Ki-44II armed with 40mm guns as a compensation for changes in the Uber Tojo in v5.3

-The Guadalcanal campaign entered a new phase, as allied bombers, many of them based in Guadalcanal, started to pound Shortlands forcing Yamamoto to admitt that the stunning Japanese victory in the sea didn´t prevent the US from gaining a firm foothold in the Solomons islands. The enemy raids caused little damage to Shortlands instalations, but 11 Betties and 4 Tojos were destroyed in the ground. The enemy lost 14 heavy bombers, half of them to A2A. More five Zeroes were lost due to combat and non combat causes. A naval bombardment on Guadalcanal caused heavy casualties on enemy troops but the airfield wasn´t hit. A new interceptor in on the way in order to deal with enemy heavy bombers

-The air campaign over Shortlands goes on. Ki-45´s were commited again with the usual disastrous results, but this time they shot down 3 P-38´s for 15 losses..... Another 7 Tojos and 10 Zeroes lost over Shortlands. The enemy, however, paid again a heavy price, as 24 P-38´s, 4 B-24´s, 3 B-17´s and 3 Marauders were lost.

-Game over, the evil colonialists were defeated by a 2,8:1 margin, with the yankee carrier force being destroyed two times.... however, the Japanese economy was in relatively bad shape, the enemy gained a firm foothold in the Salomons and no less than 3 divisions are surrounded in Mandalay. We decided to declare the game a draw and moved to Nik mod 8.0, Great campaign
