Well the sleeping giant certainly didn't like the dead corsairs toll he had to pay for that... 80 Corsairs down, pfew!

His CVs will have to withdraw anytime soon anyway. And then he'll have to feed the troops on Luzon... That will be a nice torpedo, bombing and kami training ground

Give me 500 Reppus and I'll gun down 300 Corsairs

Spent 2-3 hours on this turn, re-organizing and thinking out new cunning plan.
Need a couple of turns to rotate air units. Damage isn't as bad as it looked initially, some 40-50%
of our pilots survived.

Counted 25 enemy cve's sunk thus far, and I expcet 2-3 more to follow suit after the last beatings!

Front lines of the Empire are kinda strange, punctuated by enemy islands in Burma/Malaya, DEI and now northern Luzon
with a contingent of marines on Iwo Jima and a presence on Marcus Island. Except from this we own everything from Karachi in the
west to Sakhalin in the East. Java and most of Borneo, the Philippines, parts of the DEI including Kendari and Menando, the Palaus and Marianas are still strong Japanese bastions.

Moving Home Island reserves, AA units and base forces to Kyushu - will face a torrent of steel from the air and sea soon.
Expcet Andy to do a move against it before the end of the war. We are well prepared

We received 3 new destroyers today. The last 2 dd reinforcements are due in 25 days. Only got 1 RO sub left on the slips, will arrive soon. The last class to arrive is the radar equipped HA boats.

Relatively quiet today except the never ending stream of enemy heavy bombers.
Started preparing for the next round;

1. The continued defense of Luzon.
2. Upgrade of all defenses between Kyushu and Formosa - the most likely next targets.
This includes moving of non Home Island troops to islands around Kyushu.

Andy wondered whether I would have defended India if he had invaded. He feared that I would
have stripped bases and reinforced only Bombay and Karachi, and this was the reason why he chose not to.
Explained that his would not be the approach I would have followed. Will use the resources in India to restore
and train some of our shattered air groups. Plenty of supplies and bases over there.

Our Reppus are coming online in growing numbers and it will be interesting to see how well they can protect us.
We have hired the ex German Armaments Minister A. Speer and given him free reigns to optimize production

This was interesting: 2 enemy division crossed the river from Appari and was forced to shock
attack our garrison. This is how our defenses in Appari should have been if not for the silly
'bomb all supplies to zero in one turn and cripple the defenses' ability in this game!-)

I now think it can be possible to attrit the enemy severly in Luzon. In reality a landing in Appari
would have been impossible. US does not have Mulberry artificial harbours this far from their bases, and
Appari could not have handled the immense logistical requirements of such a huge Normandie sized landing.
When I invaded India I went straight for a large port and captured it.

The iron laws of logistics somehow doesn't quite work in WitP. Unload a gazillion supplies on a beach - or dig
them all down - and your 200k combat troops are ready to go in no time

In Mutsu memoriam!
Revenge is everything ;)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

While everyone else is in action around Takao, I took some time to visit the Taiho docked somewhere in the H.I. (the location is still secret to lure the B-29 away of course)

Apparently the May '45 modernization adds a great deal of electronics, jeez!

Could have a sight of the newly arrived Reppus on the deck. Good hardware, but still it can't keep pace with the devilish Corsair. We need better than that - one reactor is just not enough against technology from outer space.

Despite the heavy losses, the even greater enemy pain is our consolation, and morale is high aboard the ship!
Of course, the huge human sacrifice implied by our national war machine makes that we're more and more keen on drafting female personnel. But yet, tactically speaking aboard the ship, no-one seems to complain about that.

Sure those 2m wide new torpedo mounts on the foredeck behind our new multiple rocket launcher look strange, but designers have probably some answers about that... I trust our valiant technicians on that matter, of course. Long live the empire!

The Minsk!?!? Where is she moored? Obviously available for tours (unless you are a spy or something)

I flew many a surveillance flight on her and her sister, the Kiev during my Navy days.

Sure would be cool to go onbaord.

Hello Chez

The Minsk is moored in Shenzhen, Shatoujiao district.
It was bought several years ago (but unlike the Varyag the so-called private owners really seemed private for a change ) and made into a Museum quite popular in Shenzhen.

The decks between the Hangar and the flight deck are available to visit. The conning tower is partly available too. But unlike the lower decks which got transformed in some kind of aircraft carriers (and out-loud Russian army propaganda...!) history museum, the bridge is poorly looked after, and while most of the Russian stuff is still in place, it is in a pitiful state. Same thing whenever you try to get into backdoors and get wild around the ship, you'll see everything is rotting all over the place once you leave the visit path.
They also have a couple MiG-23 and Chinese planes, several Mi-24 and a lonely Mi-8 (the Hinds and the Hip received an awful treatment... but still sitting inside the Hind cockpit is something, even if it has been strapped of nearly everything). Unfortunately no Forger nor Helix around (just a Helix engine in the hall).

I could get inside a 76mm twin mount too for instance (the one aft the castle), but I wasn't supposed to get there, and well you could see that... What a mess!

They restored the CIC too, and that's a nice part to visit. That's awfully cranked and tight compared to the western designs. Working in there was probably a pain the a** when you are over 1m80...

Some shows are taking place there too. The hangar deck has a show of Russian and Chinese traditional dancing, while on the flight deck twice a day there is a "world navies" armed review (people in parade USMC uniform executing drills with their rifle like in D.C. for instance).

The ticket is around 100 RMB (10€) and for 30 RMB more you can go around in a little ship.

All in all a very nice experience and I enjoyed it to its full extend. I came to like this ship very much, even though the Chinese really do the minimum to maintain her apart from the restored areas...
But there is already enough to visit to stay there a whole afternoon (I came there at noon, and left at half past 5 while taking over a hundred photos)

Sorry to hijack the thread, PzB, I couldn't resist!

Thanks for the information, Fishbed. Too bad they don't have a Forger onboard. The last time I saw one in real life, the thing was about 5 feet from my wingtip and the pilot was motioning for us to get out of there!!!

That's great photos Fish! Guess that's the biggest warship on display in all of Asia!
How much longer remains of your time in China?

Hehe, if I remember right no one were more relieved when they retired the Forger in the early 90's
than the pilots who had to fly it Don't think they felt very cocky beside an F-14 or F-15 Chez!?

Several enemy fast TFs moved from Appari, one is west of Manila with the 2 others some distance SSW of Hong Kong.
Andy has increased port size to 2. Time to send in more subs and attempt to 'assasinate' more of his cripples.

Even though our Navy was mauled badly, we did manage to hurt a lot of Allied ships. Battleships and cruisers they
are low on! Didn't the Iowa, New Jersey though. Guess they're still refitting at Pearl.

Yeah, but I was in a 4-engine turboprop P-3 Orion patrol aircraft (see my avatar) with no F-14s or F-15s around! No defensive weapons of any kind on board except for our box lunches...

Ahh...I see! Been a lot of these Orion/Tu-Bear vs Mig/F-16 encounters in the Barents Sea.
The only way for fighter jocks to show off during the cold war?

Some time ago Andy sent me the following mail:

Can I ask a question ?

Several times I reconsidered a re invasion of India but always talked myself out of it on the grounds that you would fall back to the NW and end up holding just my entry points both of which are urban terrain and therefore to all intents and purposes impregnable unless I bring most of the allied army which I am not willing to do.

This would be a crazy historical position but is probably in keeping with the game.

Would that have been the way you would play it ? Its more curiousity than anything else now as the time has passed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This I understood like Andy had cancelled all his plans about invading India and told him about what my defensive plans were and a bit about my
dispositions. After I posted on the forum informing that he would not invade India in this game, I got another mail informing me that an invasion of India was
still being considered.....

In reply I said that this was of course up to him, and that I probably misunderstood his intentions in the first mail.
Andy was game enough to give me detailed descriptions of his plans - thus far.
With several CV TFs now racing towards Singers I got the feeling that an Allied fleet will sail towards the Indian Ocean pretty soon.
To counter this I will change troop dispositions in India, transfer air units and attempt to shift some troops from Burma.

I think our best chance lies in hurting an Allied fleet with LBA before they can secure a large airfield.
The base immediately north of Colombo is probably a hot candidate. Knowing our Scottish friend he will probably bypass Ceylon, so I'm considering to
move parts of these garrisons 'ashore'

Currently we have the following LCUs available:

4 crack inf regiments.
3 large crack Bdes
1 tank regiment
1 engineer regiment
7-8 NLF and SNLF type units
A variety of AA, arty, base force units, aviation regiments etc.

The challenge is how to protect Karachi/Bombay and at the same time delay the enemy's invasion.
Think we all know that it's impossible to prevent an Allied Amph fleet from getting ashore.

Will keep 2 Regs + Base Force + AA units in Karachi and Bombay and protect the main cities with garrisons.
The key to defeating an Allied landing lies in the use of a strong air force. Think it could be a good investment and I've kept a lot
of AS in India. If we also could move 200 Reppus, 200 other fighters and 400 bombers things would become difficult Andy.

I think this is doable without weakening the defenses of the Inner Perimeter bases.

Comments?

Ok, supplies and troops are reinforcing Formosa and Okinawas while I'm shifting
reserves towards Kyushu. Air units are being replenished and Reppus are getting back
into action after being depleted by the 100 Tie Interceptors that hit Takao last week.

In India I'm struggling to find many reinforcements, but a Zeke unit just upgraded to
Reppus in Calcutta while several kami and LBA units have transferred in and will commence
training. It's a peaceful place with plenty supplies and no interference from the enemy.
If Andy decides to come after India after all, he will meet a swarm of angry bees. If not,
it will be our training and R&R area for the Air Training Units.

Win win situations I like

My plan is Shinden in June Speedy! June!! Will know if we manage this feat over the next
couple of days. Soon 500 Shinden will be coming of the production lines. Plan is to place 200
over Harbin - a factory already researching 120 Shindens pr month. With 9 forts, mountain terrain
and 2000 AP I'm planning to stop the Red Steamroller here. No way the Reds can match the Shinden.

Ahhh, Dr Fish you are invaluable in the propaganda role!
Nice shot and nice reminder. Almost on the day 1 year after this historic defeat of the enemy we
shoot down 50 Hellcats and Corsairs almost in the same place.

Got another few nice surprises today. An expensive but worthwhile effort cause substantial enemy losses;

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/30/45

Night Surface Combat

Cpt Andy left a convoy unescorted and we used the opportunity to whack it!
The Glorious Kirishimna rushed in and delivered another blow to the enemy
We lost 1 destroyer and 2 others are damaged. 4-5 enemy escorts are pummeled and
only 1 shell is landed on the transports.

I'm making use of every chance to reduce enemy strength. Damaged ships are just as
good as sunk ones. An invasion of the Home Island will require a lot of transports
and escorts.

Pretty good intercept, starting to get the hang of it

Uber Deep Strikes got one disadvantage:
The Uber long trips through enemy territory before and after landings

I love the AAR and its great to see one so late in the war..and Im definately a JFB.. but ..its almost meaningless now, isnt it? Its surreal.. Japan able to produce 1,000 A7Ms a month while he gets something like 150 a month of his best fighter... something like 12,000 A6Ms were produced in the entire war and you could do that in a year now.. still I dont fault that so much..the situation is better for you.  But for him, it seems quite..unfair.  Anytime  Japan is just outproducing the US means something is wrong..

Hi, there are a lot of things not fair in WitP Vetamur!
After being on the receiving end of the Uber CAP, Tie Interceptor and Mega Deep Strike invasions aimed at knocking me out
of the war at _all costs_ I have woefully little regret towards production issues.

"I ask you: Do you want total war? If necessary, do you want a war more total and radical than anything that we can even imagine today?"

Total War has been decleared a long time ago and I will do my best until the enemy has had enough!
We demand nothing but total capitulation

As PzB said... i can only add that i consider Corsairs just as solid planes... T-Bolts are unbeatable (ok, i choosed PDU and i have no complains)...

Unfair? Yes, it is certainly unfair but Vetamur, think about like model which force Allies to behaviour somewhat historical. Instead of 'crazy' airborne invazions and transporting the whole divisions at undefended bases at SRA (ships, who needs ships?) and cruising with Death Star and its 'solid' CAP just to clean up skies from Japanese ac; or just waiting for Hellcats and Corsairs and then steam rolling where and when you want to do...the flexibility of the Japan war industry force Allied player to ruin Jap industry... if you don't achive that, than you should get reward for that

exactly what Allies done in the RL with strategic air offensive and sub offensive. Furthermore, game moves too fast and such unrealistic production numbers for Japanese can force Allies to do preparations propertly (it is another question why Andy doesn't have time!): Capture base A.... fortify base A, send Corsairs and T-bolts on nearest enemy base (B) with heavy bombers support... prepare ground for successful invasion of B base...
and then repeat, repeat and repeat...

It should also be mentioned that it is ONLY Hellcats Andy is truly short of.
I can't shoot down enough Corsairs to empty his pools...

As of lately Andy has been using A LOT of Corsairs and holding his Hellcats back in a pure CAP role.

Regarding other land bases fighters like P-38s, P-47s, P-52s he got more than enough and doesn't need anymore.
All these fighters are capable of shooting down Jap fighters in almost 5-1 odds and sometimes more.

Personally I don't think 400 researched Reppus should auto convert into 400 production Reppus.
Instead existing A6Mx factories should start a gradual upgrade.

But again, this is not how the game works! There are 100 things I would love to change, but realize that
further changes must be done through mods and house rules. So I'm _trying_ to stop whining whenever I loose
100 Reppus in one A2A engagement and instead focus on driving my opponent nuts

As Pauk-San also rightly pointed out, Andy is in a hurry - and this has a high price!
He's willing to pay it in this game even though the public would have launched him out of the bomb bay of a B-29 long
ago in RL!

I missed ca 50 points to get a auto victory back in 43...and it would be more than a little optimistic to try to follow the
historic timeline of the Pacific War after that. Andy can achieve almost any short term objective he want to, but certain
targets - like the Home Islands and surrounding islands are so well defended and Japan so stacked with resources and
hardware that there simply isn't enoug time to plan and execute long term objectives.

I'll give that to Andy - playing the historical, logical steamroller way would soon appear very frustrating from the Japanese point of view if you play stock. I think that Gen.Hoepner's former AAR showed that very well: while it was very exciting to a certain point, it really started to get a little boring when his opponent systematically pounded his next objective into submission, then went for it, then pounded the other one, then went for it, etc...

And I know from the comment I wasn't the only to start losing interest (and I suppose Hoepner was feeling even worse about that...)

Andy play his own way and that's good. Most of us will call it a suicide run (even when he just doesn't need to, like in Pauk's game) but well it's his choice, and that what makes the Scott interesting to play: he loves to gamble and to go for his objectives at all cost. Against an unexperienced or average opponent he would be in Tokyo by 1944 - against PzB or Pauk, he calls for Armageddon everywhere, and he is one of the main reasons why those two AAR are among the most popular ones I believe

I should have been more clear..Im not blaming you Pzb..obviously you play the game you are given.  And I understand there other issues..but this one seems to go to the core of the nature of the war, not the details of how its being fought.

Oh well. Sorry. I started a miniconversation that probably hurt your ratio.haha
