Only giving another view of a similar action in the scenario.
Just letting you know that experience and new air routines will give dfferent results.
As it should.

Let the Elf continue on with his excellent AAR.

yep, I am a noob. I own up on this.

I did not get UV the day it came out. It took me a week to catch up on d/l on WitP - and no I am not running a web site on ww2 aviation issues.

And still: UV started as an operational game, WitP tried to expand on this - and as it looks (going by Halsey) AE is going down to technicalities which barely warant the label of tactical - but may please the hardest of core.

Anyway, if the chaps responsible for a project go "chicken out" that easily, you know something is wrong.
There is a saying in german for that: Beleidigte Leberwurst.

This just indicates: something is wrong, very wrong.

Again: What is the point of this thread: Entertainment - fine by me. Just tell ..

Here's a thought, you could read the very first lines of the first post in this thread:

Ok, you are all in luck. I have convinced the powers that be that it would be a good idea to expose a little bit of what is going on in AE. This is a Benchmarking Test that aims to check the performance of the A2A routines in a HISTORIC setting.

DISCLAIMER: This is meant to give everyone a bit on insight. A preview, if you will, of what is going on behind the curtain. WE ARE IN BETA. Whatever dynamics, trends, paradigms you detect or disagree with are subject to change. Let's not ruin this for everyone. This is not intended to foster debate or support anyone's agenda. Mostly just enjoy and take the time to learn about what is in store with AE.

It's not even certain that he DOES want somebody to tell him something. There are people who just whine for the sake of whining.

according to my German colleague sat next to me 'There is a saying in german for that: Beleidigte Leberwurst.' means sulky sausage - which i think aptly describes the poster and not the development team!!

ENOUGH!! - back to the good bits - the AAR, excellent so far, very absorbing and immersive even for such a brief snapshot of a beta test

Ummm ... so, what happened to the pilots? And how does it look for the U.S. CVs?

I thought those questions were not totally out of bounds, even given that "dynamics, trends, paradigms you detect or disagree with are subject to change". It's kind of sad to see this thread terminate because it got hijacked by a nitwit.

I'm curoius how it turned out for the pilots, as I think Elf commented in another AE thread that he wanted to fix the WITP problem of all pilots sinking with the ship. So, just wondering how it's working in AE, how many were rescued, and what happens to them (I think they go in the pool for a time?)

One good this I see from this AAR is there are a lot less planes flying, and it's going to be harder to keep up large air raids in AE.

This thread isn't going to terminate, despite the efforts of a certain party. We just got a new build out, and TheElf (along with the rest of us) is busy with it. Expect service to resume shortly.

All I am saying is - to my lights AE has not changed a jota compared to WitP in the light of carrier clashes in a PBM environment. Just a lesson learned statement.

Cheers

If you are basing your last few posts and this assertion on the data gleaned from this thread, that is an awfully small data sample. Add in the idea that this is a one-off run of an early component of a not yet ready for production version the game, and it sounds to me as if you are not only jumping to an entirely unwarranted conclusion, you are making a running flying leap at it. I'd wait just a little bit before making any grandiose proclamations based on inadequate data at this point.

Coral Sea is an unmitigated failure for the IJN. The indecision (combined with weather) on the part of CARDIV 5 and thinly protected invasion force give the Americans the window of opportunity they need to strike a decisive blow to any IJ aspirations of routing ABDA forces from New Guinea.

The victory is costly though, and the ability of the eroded Aussie and American defenders of PM to continue in the face of increasing pressure remains in question.

The disparity of IJN AirGroups destroyed is due to the immediate nature of their Carrier's demise. Fragments of these units still abound at Rabaul and Lae. They will likely be disbanded into the Tainan groups or sent home.

Units of note UPDATE: Post Coral Sea

IJNAF

Tainan Ku S-1
LCDR Kawai LDR: 59 Insp: 83 Air: 65 Aggr:80
Unit EXP: 89 MOR: 99->96 FAT: 12->23 Kills: 14->20 (6 kills for the group following a poor early showing in the day )
30% CAP 70% SWEEP @ 5k’ 4 A/c lost, all apparently to Air Combat -- 1 KIA, 3 MIA
READINESS:
A/c -- 21->14s/0m/1->4d/0r -- in addition to the loss of 4 A/C, 4 more will be sidelined with varying degrees of combat damage
Pilots -- 18 for tomorrow (the loss of 4 Veterans is a hard knock)

Tainan Ku K-2

LCDR Nakajima LDR: 73 INSP: 80 AIR: 74* AGG: 75*
Unit EXP: 85 MOR: 99 FAT: 10->14 Kills: 9->11 (2 kills...not a good showing)
0% CAP 100% ESCORT @ 16k’ (Max effort today in support of the invasion force)
READINESS:
A/c -- 13->11s/0m/6->5d/0r -- 3 A/C lost to A2A for sure. Seems they came out on the short end...
Pilots -- 19 ready (3 KIA)
Morale remains high...likely due to LCDR Nakajima's Inspiration.

Genzan Ku K-1
(G3M2 Nell at Rabaul)

LDR is LTJG Ogawa ---- LDR: 85 INSP: 82 AIR: 28^ AGG: 23(Ogawa sat this one out, LT Mizuno led the group today...)
LDR is LT Mizuno ---- LDR: 60 INSP: 72 AIR: 63^ AGG: 49 (he won't win any citations for bravery but he has the makings of a cautious, skilled Bomber LDR)
Unit EXP: 79 MOR: 99 FAT: 7 (one raid for the day resulting in some hits!)
AF Attack @ PM 16k’ ( 2% Bomb Acc...a 1% increase!)
READINESS:

AF Attack @ PM 16k’ (PM is the target)
READINESS:

Pilots -- 27 ready (no additions)

RAAF at Port Moresby

Here is the 36th PS following their first action in relief of the Aussies.

36th Pursuit Sqdn(P-39D)

Pilots -- 18 ready (No Losses)

Introducing...

35th Pursuit Sqdn(P-400)
EXP: 63 MOR: 73 FAT: 16 Kills: 4 (A decent start, though losses are nearly twice their take for the day)

Well, IF its doable, it should be used where historically accurate - so AFAIK, only the Sangamons would be able to launch torpedo strikes, and probably only carry enough torpedoes for a few.

Agreed!

quote:

Im sure the people working on AE are more aware of what could and couldnt launch torpedo planes than I am.

(Edit - I guess Mini-KB just lost its teeth. )

In the immortal words of Alec Guiness, "What have I done?"

OK, for full historical verisimilitude, now find a way to limit Junyo/Hiyo to launching only 6 torpedo-armed Kanko apiece

While I'm about it, I count 20 torpedo drops by the TBD's. With Sho. charging around with a 34 knot capability and the Mark 13's having a speed IRO 33.5 knots, isn't a 20% hit+detonation rate just the teensiest bit on the fortunate side?

Isnt it plausible that Shokaku took 6 x 1000lb bomb hits before the TBDs made their hits?

Hello Elf,

Great thread. Very informative and very well written.

I did have a question on the recent screenshots, though. What are the numbers in parentheses above the various columns in the air losses screenshot?

Thanks,
Mike

It's the total number of aircraft lost to the reason in that column.

What means "Using BOMBS" in screenshot of Nell unit?

Unit is in editor set to use only bombs?
Unit is set by player to use only bombs?
Unit is based in a base where no torpedos are available?

Players can now decide what loadout to be used? Or based at a base that doesn´t meet the requirements to use torps?

Torpedo-carrying air units can be set to use bombs instead of torps. Useful since using torpedoes burns a lot of supplies at land bases (and are in short supply on ships)... Lets you save your torps for the carriers, instead of wasting them on the destroyers.
