So I board and take a corvette for 14K. I don't get to sell the ship I capture? I only get the cash for that patrol mission? It's not worth boarding a ship I guess unless you have some specific thing you need from the ship in the course of a career. If you capture a ship it's prize money, and you should be paid for the capture of that ship IMHO.

From now on it's just, "Kill them ALL, God will know his own."

Really? If that's the case, I think that could possibly do with changing. There has to be an incentive to board.

Normally you can keep or sell a ship when boarding. That´s the idea of boarding a ship. However you have to capture the bridge to do so. You didn´t maybe just captured the cargo bay and accidently clicked on leaving ship?

I will double check. All the ship compartments were green, and I way outnumbered the bad guys with commandos.

I'm up to Lt. Commander, with about 3 reloads of my character. Taking out a known pirate in a destroyer was a bit tough when you are in a corvette. It can be done but it's not a walk in the park.

I finally got the resistance to EMP, and that helped considerably.

I gave up capturing ships for same reason, didn't get any real benefit for the risk (i.e didnt get to keep or sell ship) so maybe something isnt working. But my commander died eventually so I am back in a fighter again so no proof I am afraid.

BTW I am enjoying playing this also.

While I am here, when my turn is blocked by EMP I need to click twice to end the turn, once to end turn and once to say I am sure (when I cant take any action as I am blocked by EMP) ! Maybe you can remove the second prompt if there is a patch.

The demo being used at present by people is the old one. You can get it here. Matrix have not released their demo yet

Thank you Dread , I'll wait for the Matrix one (if there is one coming) as i dont want to be put off by an older version as i really want to like this game as a nice change of pace from AE

Nothing wrong with that demo tbh mate. It's the one I used that convinced me to buy. Of course, I don't know what will be different in the Matrix version, but I've noticed precious little difference between the old demo and the purchased product...not that that's a bad thing, as the game plays just fine.

Well 10 mins of the demo convinced me this is a fun little game and i like helping out small developers,Big software companies make games for the mentally challenged normally and charge a lot more.

More entrepeneurs in this business the better and Kudos to matrix for hosting it else it would have sailed completely under my radar. (note to self ,, stop the AE naval analogies )

Thanks all and esp Dredd

+1 for entire post...

If there is something that allows us to sell the ship, please show us, because I have been unable to use that feature.
Otherwise capturing ships is not worth it unless you need it for mission completion.

Fun game. I have already paid for it in entertainment value.

Right after you capture a ship a popup should ask you to "keep" or "sell" the ship. If you are not getting this, then something is wrong.

Of course you have that's usually what we do when we buy a game. Sorry couldn't resist I assume you meant it's already paid for itself in entertainment value?

Ok, I captured a corvette and was able to sell it for 50,000 space bucks.

What was funny, was that It made me fly slowly back to my home planet even though I was only 1 crew member short. You have to be real careful and not blow up your victim in order to capture ships, and I'm assuming you can't capture fighters. My crew layout for my heavy corvette is 14 commandos, 4 officers, 2 crew. When I took the corvette I only lost 1 commando.

Good game gets better, I can go hunt/sell corvettes, maybe even a destroyer if I get lucky. You do know now that I want to be able to capture a ship and then switch if it is bigger than mine. Someone else will have to chime in on that one. Last time I tried to board a destroyer using a corvette I got my you know what handed to me. I'm not sure if that is even possible.

Tried the demo and took the plunge.

Nifty little game... reminds me somewhat of the old Pirates Gold in some ways. The combat seems rather boring at first but as I advance in ships, upgraded ship equipment and skills I'm finding enough variation to keep it interesting. Same thing for the missions... as I advance, they are getting more interesting.  All in all its a fun little game.

I plyed only as mercenary and arichev top rank fairly easy (after cca 4 hours of gameply and lots of battles) , have battleship and dont see reason to continue play.
My ideas for improvment/thougts on game.

1. autocombat - this is most needed feature to prevent combat boring, even in battleship and admiral rank, space combat is same boring (read, same tactic) as it was in begining .with figter.

2.missions - a. when you chose spying missions and you dont have needed equipmet/ability, lets game display you warning and show what you lack
b. delivery missions - lets they offer you cargo capacities equvalent to your cargo capacity - say 1-3 runs, I hate to fly 20 there and back only to fulfil mission
-new submision - you will just pickup special goods in certain planet and delivery to it destination - it will be one trip - no need to pay for
cargo, but with inceased risk on attack on you - pirates if you did it for corporation, enemies if you did it for goverment
c. governors will give you special missions instead of only generic ones.

3.more ranks - where is commander, vice-admiral, real-admiral and mayby few more ? and implement here some limitation - e.q. unles you are 1. lietnant, you cant
command cruiser, admiral for dreagnughout (yes, completly new ship). And each important gives you choseable special ability (added to normal promotion), say at
1-leitnant you can chose between permanent +5% hit chance , +5% shield strenght, +5% eccm...etc (ship related),for commander crew related, for captain ship
combat related, for admiral fleet combat related.

of course, rank limit for ships will be relatd only to combat ships, not on trading related.

4. When you reach admiral rank, you can fly to your faction HQ/capital planet (need implementation) - and here they offer you special/unique missions (for all ranks, related to your ship/abilities), and for admiral you can here sugest invansions on enemy systems, try to settle peace with enemyies, or to make aliance.

5. more components to upgarede on ship, not only same genereic, when you have bigger ship, lets you have more componets to upgrade - e.q. ship bay on crusers and bigger, on battleship CIC , and please more variety - not only 4 engines, but 6 or more. And for each ship have another room for special/unique component - free for basic ship, but you can put here anything, for battleships e.q. flak for engaing of enemy missiles or crew comparment for increased crew size, armory for better ship assault.....

6. when you conquer ship, lets game inform you, that you change to this ship if you keep him, and not will be added to your fleet, as I first thought - with this I lost crusef for frigate.

Yes on no.6 ...happen to me as well ...thought of getting 2 ships instead receive a message that my crew are leaving ...due to lack of space ...and lost my newly upgraded cruiser

Also always make mistake on the option of taking the cargo or proceed to attack the bridge..should be a warning on this ..

That's nice Czert - posting a link to a free game (of the same genre) in a game thread.

Czert,

That was indeed poor manners, if you want to discuss another game, post it in the General Discussion forum.

I posted it mainly for inspiration , how to improve smugglers. Game which combine best from booth games (doesnt matter if it will be comercial or not) will be execelent, and mayby, just mayby succesor to elite/frontier/firts encouter. I dind find good sucesor to these games. Privater 1/2 - freelances was good games for its genre, but very lacks in freedom of chosing paths (lacks of missions types, ship choices, sloras systems).

7. some special options for you, when you are on your own planet - like they generate some money for you, but you need to colect them, sometimes you need wipe out pirates for good comerce...etc.

8. more pictures - i noticed that if you play as confederation, that govenor of planet have symbol of federation on his collar.

9. when you have low shields, then enemy try to board your ship, and if they will be unsucefull, then you can try counterattack and try to board thiers ship. And vice versa - if you board enemy ship, and retreat, then enemy can try counterattack.

10. interactive picture of you - when you hoover with cursor over ribbon/medal is show name of it and date of aquring. Same for rank.

Thank you Czert for agreeing with me as this was the first and foremost thing I saw about the game when playing the demo. I wondered if the battles were the same at higher levels and you have just confirmed it for me and saved me $29.99 thanks as I was so close to buying it.

And you made highest rank in 4 measly hours? Where's the challenge? Where's the longevity? I'll save my money for BftB now.

killroyishere,

It has taken me a lot longer than 4 hours just to make captain in a destroyer. Of course ability with games I assume is the deciding factor. Sometimes the game is repetitious, but I am still having a good time, and haven't explored all the nuances. Maybe there isn't any, I don't know, but it is still fun.

That being said, I too have passed up many games after reading the first impressions thread for a myriad of reasons.

I tend to figure out games pretty fast so it really takes a game with a lot of details and micromanagement to be fun for me. Just been playing too long I guess and it's getting to the point once you've seen on you've seen them all as far as gameplay goes. Glad you are enjoying it though hate to see someone waste their money even if I don't know them personally.

Is not a bad game , just that it is not your type of game ...but it is a god send game for me

I know the feeling ....for example Gal Civ , it is worshiped by so many  gamers ...
but if I were to write the review ..I will say the game is unplayable , too tedious and with so many details/micromanagement that I don;t bother to play after a while

So I strongly disagree with your statement that people are wasting money on this game , just that it is a simple and addictive game that might not fit to everyone taste but nnot to the point of completely unplayable ...

The battle in higher level with additional skill do give some edgy time for me ...
The skill that give you additional 2 AP but in return you expose to more hit ..is a great for me ....not to mention that certain ship has the ability go to alternate dimension for one turn to avoid damages

The ability to board and ground assault battle do give real tense moment ..especially when trying to capture a Battleship ( a class that you can never buy)

There also a "raid " tactics to capture those droids unit which is essential in the future ground assault battle

There will be Tactical decision like , should I go for commando strike " - risking marines but safeguard the crewmen or EMP Strike - just to capture the droids unit ( which is the most powerful unit- which is also not for sale )and run ...or should I just happy with the looting cargo or go for the bridge and take over the ship but I don;t know the number of enemy waiitng for me at the final battle..I could lose everything including my ship !!

, .....and really I do not see how is all this boring

There also will be decision during bounty hunting , should I just blast the ship to pieces or should I board and capture him alive for more rewards and fame ...

It is only when you are fighting lower ship that might a bit routine but this could easily fix by auto resolve in next patch

Cheers
