<sigh>Ok, Emobama. I give up. You manage to split hairs to the nth degree and pick up on the smallest discrepancy in someone's post. Well spotted that I didn't include every single reason in the world for not being able to install a game. Brilliant. You actually missed fire, flood and earthquakes!

You are so busy trying to find chinks and the tiniest fault with what people say that you don't actually grasp the point they are making. Oh well.

I think that hardware is not a tiny thing. You are correct that you may be able to run VMWare but how is that 5 1/4" floppy working out for you? Seriously, stay away from downloadable media. It is so scary 5 year old's are doing it.

My 5-1/4 floppy drive is humming away as I write this..getting ready for a little Darklands before I fire up the horse and buggy and take maw to the saloon for a night of dancin'.

You mean the guy that got banned almost two years ago, and now he's possibly back under a new name, well, fake name of course?

Hint: We're not talking about you Emobama.

EDIT: Jim, it was actually me that got that Santa thread off into politics. I said that being lied to about Santa reminded me of the president or something like that. I don't remember the exact words, but politics ensued after that. I still feel the total guilt and opressoin from throwing that thread off of it's intended path...

You nearly said that name!!!!

Sorry JD, I should have blamed LarryP for the Santa thread instead lol!

I will have to ask Santa if he forgives you for leading us all down the dark path LarryP. How many gifts you recieve this year depends on what you say in future. Let this be a warning to you!

There are a few more reasons. If you don't have needed hardware, media goes bad, you lose the media, dog ate my CD.

He's not splitting hairs... he's tap-dancing, hoping the noise will draw attention away from his crushing and humiliating defeat at the hands of all of you who ground him into the dirt, with both overwhelming logic, and more importantly... real life experience with software companies. Some laptops already do not support internal DVD drives and floppies.

Technically, laptops still support the drives, but, since floppies are too limited for today's requirements - regarding storage space, manufacturers usually just put in DVD drives these days. You can remove the DVD drive and put an internal floppy drive or even JAZZ/Zip drive in the laptop's drive bay.

Laptops "not supporting" internal DVD drives are in fact not notebooks/laptops but netbooks like the ASUS eeePC, an all new category, so basically apples compared to oranges (laptops/notebooks). And this doesn't serve your "new technology" argumentation.

If you start nitpicking then pls do it accurately.

Good grief...2 PAGES since yesterday evening? Really?!

Look, it's pretty simple. Some people like Steam. Some don't. Some still want only physical game copies.

Guess what? Every one of those is a perfectly legitimate opinion to have. And if you truly don't think so, you need only look in a mirror to see who the idiot is.

I almost posted the same thing several times. I don't like Steam, but I see a valuable service it provides and I fault nobody for using it. However, for anyone to slander a person that prefers either means, and goes into detail to dismantle their personality (one person really comes to mind right now), that's idiot. Did I just use a generic political means to avoid confrontation? Heck no, not around here! There will be confrontation over this post.

You know, this is the first post in this thread where names have been called iirc. I said anyone who uses Steam is an idiot yesterday and I believe I added a smilie to the comment to indicate it was meant in fun. So far, as incredibly long as this thread is, there has been a lot of banter and some good natured arguing and almost, but not quite, heated discussion. Not once has anyone resorted to name calling or lost their temper over this issue, which is a first on any forum I've ever been on.

I think we're all adult enough to realise that we can all agree to disagree about Steam. I know there are lots of members here who use and like Steam. That's great for them. I happen to think it's a lousy service and I've had 1st hand experience of that. I know I'm not going to "convert" anyone and I'm not trying to. This thread has, for the most part, been both informative and amusing by degrees. Arctic Blast, if you're serious about your comment above, then why bother coming in here if you don't like the thread? Just ignore us idiots and enjoy the other threads here. If you meant it as a bit of fun, perhaps you might think about using the smilies in future? Just a suggestion

D'oh! I did, in fact, miss the smilie.

Anyway, I agree. Generally, it's been a good conversation. There are a couple of people who frankly seem insanely driven to try to convince everyone of their side (which makes no sense at all), but that's just the lunatic fringe you tend to find in any conversation these days.

Glad you missed the smilie. Thought it was unusual for you to be so serious like that

LarryP, I should be in bed now as it's almost midnight and we all know what happens then. I turn into something even more horrible.

I still have mine JIC....I found some old games in the garage on 5.25 and I've been itching to try a hardware hack to get the old bird working via USB.

If that won't work, I can still try to get it wedged into a 8 year old PC I built myself, running great in the garage. Hrmmm...

I know that feeling! I've got about 5 or 6 5.25's sitting right next to me, I haven't gotten around to installing in my 12 year-old machine... But, I've seen some USB 5.25 drives on Ferrengi-bay, I mean E-bay, from time to time... no idea about their compatibility or how well they work though. You can also search the net, as a large portion of 5.25 games have already been transferred from the 5.25 format... and they're sometimes hacked to run better under newer OS's as well! (read: this avenue can be a real time-saver!)

Dang, I am tempted to dig out my old Amiga 2000 now. Pls stop talking about it !

It's got a 320 MB harddisk (*g*), an accelerator board with a Motorola 680030(?) processor with 50 MHz (! ... lol) and another expansion board with a 16-Bit soundcard (at a time when PCs still had 8-Bit Adlib or Soundblaster cards). I just need a special cable to link it to my CRT.... hmmmm
Shortly after I got these cards, PCs with VESA local bus came out, with either 30 MHz or 40 MHz. Ahh, those were the days. Amiga gfx were superior, games weren't pixelated like the PC versions. Hmm, Wing Commander, Carrier Command, Birds of Prey, North and South, Battle Isle, History Line (both from BlueByte), Monkey Island, Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, B17. Some of that stuff should still be on the HD. I wonder if it still works. Hmm.

My IIgs is set up and sitting just to my left. *grin* I started on an Apple II. Had a buddy who talked me into going PC. Going from a minimum of 14 colors to 4 colors was too hard to stay with, so I went back to the Apple and went for a GS while he dumped PC's for an Amiga, which he loved. (Amiga's never had enough wargames for me... the backwards compatibility of my GS kept and still keeps my Apple II wargame collection alive)

I should probably give some vintage Mac's away though (the pile next to the 5.25 drives *grin*)... I'm never going to get to them. *sigh*

It usually takes 24-32 hours for them to get to your issue. If it's a steam issue, they deal with it, otherwise they forward you on to the game publisher's support.

I have used their CS. I bought a pack that had Fleet Command in it. The graphics would freak out after a minute or two of playing. I used steams support, and the next day they e-mailed me a link to a dual core optimizer for AMD, and it fixed my problem.

Not very good. They tend to leave it to the game manufacturers...who are not very helpful either...kind of "It's their fault" and then "No it's their fault"!

You know, I think Emobama believes that anybody who doesnt believe in steam or the "great and powerful" future of DD-only is a luddite hiding under blankets hoping those nasty DD games go away. I really do. Personally, as much as I hate the steaming pile of steam and its ilk, I know you sometimes cant get away from using that crap. I think a middle of  the road approach is best..

I think people who do not believe in something that exists and cling to the past are fools. It exists, it is everywhere and there is no avoiding it. To do so only limits yourself and I think the vast number of people in this thread slapping hands and grabbing butts are either using downloadable digital media or will be using it soon.

They may not even realize they are doing it.
