Hi all,

Hmmm ... since went to bed at 3am, I had the intention of hugging the pillow for a looong time this morning. That was not meant to be.

At 8am, my opponent informed (via SMS) that I had a turn in my inbox ...

This game is dangerously addictive ...

Of course, I had some incentive to get up and do my turn - I had to set up my CV sneak attack on Truk. With both KB and Mini KB in DEI, I thought it was time to send a message ... . It will be very interesting to see the outcome when I get the turn back later today ...

SMS PBEM turn notification on Saturday morning...

Leo "Apollo11"

Yup ...

Well, since I grew up in Nebraska in the 50's and 60's where the choice was girls or sheep, it really didn't matter what their names were.

What aprt of Nebraska CoS? It looks like that will be me my furture home for the next 2 years.

I grew up in Lincoln so I'm really a city boy by Nebraska standards. Almost all of my family still live there and I try to get back when I can. I try to get in a football game each fall if possible.

I don't think that's all that far from Omaha is it? That's where I'll be.

Only 55 miles and lessening with urban sprawl. Most of Nebraska's population is that corner. The rest is corn, wheat, cattle, or bison in the areas Ted Turner bought.

Well, i need to head home and I'm too tired to fix dinner. Anyone have any ideas where I might find a chicken in a can in Richmond, VA.?

We need to get together for a drink, it's only a 45 minute between us.

I was supposed to be up there last weekend, but chickened out due to the weather.

I'll be around for a couple of months, we'll try to work it out.

If your out in Nebraska by July, don't miss the testicle festival. It's held not too far from Offutt and it's a good way to get introduced to the local culture and cuisine. The menu might sound limited, but there is the choice of beef, pork, lamb, or turkey

Just buy a can of Mrs Fearnow's... it ain't "chicken in a can" but it is the best canned Brunswick stew that you'll ever find.

I thought the terms "redneck" and "hillbilly" pretty much had that covered. The only other context I've heard the term in was in regards to white supremacists.

No, see, "redneck" is a term of prideful self-application on the one side, and intended as pejorative by those who are not proud to be rednecks.

"Hillbilly" is pretty archaic, and conjures up images of Li'l Abner, Daisy Mae and the rest. It's a pretty toothless (tee hee) general term anymore that is used harmlessly and even fondly as a description of poor, rural people in such places as West Virginia, southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and western Tennessee. Unsophisticated views of all Southerners tend to identify them generically as "hillbillies."

You've probably heard "peckerwood" connected with "white supremacist" by those who live in vague fear and are looking for a way to comfort themselves by applying dismissive, trivializing labels to those who are perceived to threaten them.

Uhh... that would be eastern Tennessee. There's not much in the way of hills in western Tennessee...

Yeah......something to look forward to! Bend in the road steakhouse that hosts it looks promising though.

What steakhouse are you speaking of?

I haven't been back to Richmond since 1994, and that visit was only for a weekend. The last time I lived there was the fall of '86...

The only history made in my Lincoln was in American football (and not enough recently). Actually the town was originally named after another Brit city, Lancaster. but was renamed in honor of Pres. Lincoln after his assassination.

My mistake Brad. I was quoting another post , and was hooked to this one. I don't understand it. I was responding to Chicken of the sea about a "testical festival" in Nebraska and Bend in the road steakhouse sponsers it. I'm sorry for the confusion.

That's okay, Steve. I get confused several times daily, so it wasn't anything new. If that was a new steakhouse in the Richmond area, I was going to ask my best friend about it. He still lives in the capital of the Confederacy.

That's 2nd capital of the Confederacy! I never understood why they said "Yeah, Mobile is way too easy to defend, lets move it to less than 100 miles from Washington and then spend the rest of the war trying to keep the Yankee's out!".

In the current venacular , WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!

Well... the Union actually never took Richmond. The confederates evacuated it after Lee had to evacuate the lines at Petersburg - after four years of conflict and the Confederacy was completely depleted.

Which discussion reminds me of my favorite scene from The Beverly Hillbillies. Jethro has a school buddy over at their mansion and the kid's chauffeur has come to pick him up. Granny meets the chauffeur at the door, explaining that the boy isn't yet ready to go home. Our chauffeur then says "I shall take that boy like Grant took Richmond!" and tries to push past Granny through the front door. You can imagine the result. Just like in history, the attempt to enter through the front door ended up with our chauffeur flat on his face in the drive (I grew up on the battlefield at Gaines Mill, right next to Cold Harbor where Grant lost something to the tune of 7000 men in a thirty minute assault on Lee's lines).

Mobile? Ermm...the original capital was Montgomery, sir Yankee sir.
