ORIGINAL: rtrapasso OK - a question for the forumites... is it an "old German tradition" that MEN also get engagement rings? Inquiring minds want to know!! I'll say no. Germans have never seemed too jewelry obsessed to me. The lederhosen on the other hand . . . i'd never heard of such a thing, but i figure we have more European types to weigh in on the matter... Uhm, you mean you dont? In Sweden it's quite common. In fact, I don't think I know any guy that's engaged who isn't wearing an engagement ring. From what i can find, the male engagement ring seems to be limited to Nordic countries, notably Sweden, Finland (Norway wasn't mentioned but i wouldn't be surprised.) i was trying to find out if there was an OLD German tradition... evidence suggests "maybe". Doesn't seem to be a current tradition (except in Nordic countries). So, Grollub - do men in Sweden continue to wear the "engagement ring" after marriage (which is what US women do, often wearing both rings), or do they switch to just wedding rings? It apparently is a Nordic thing. Funny, I didn't know that until you asked To answer your question - usually both the men and women just switch to the wedding ring. This one is usually a little more gaudy (for the woman) than the engagement ring which is just a plain gold ring.
