I think what'll stick with me the most about "Armadillo" and "Restrepo" was a scene in the former where one of the newly-deployed soldiers talks to one who's about to go home, and hears about the latter having to gather up the remains of a buddy who'd been blown to pieces by a roadside bomb. Hearing the description of finding a knee joint and a severed hand still in its glove...

OK - a question for the forumites... is it an "old German tradition" that MEN also get engagement rings? Inquiring minds want to know!!

I'll say no. Germans have never seemed too jewelry obsessed to me. The lederhosen on the other hand . . .

i'd never heard of such a thing, but i figure we have more European types to weigh in on the matter...

Fear the wiki, never heard of this before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimmal_ring

When I read this at first I was picturing a ring through the nose rather like you'll see with bulls, but nowadays I'll bet this "male engagement ring" is applied elsewhere on the body...

Uhm, you mean you dont? In Sweden it's quite common. In fact, I don't think I know any guy that's engaged who isn't wearing an engagement ring.

Personal wtf moments in reading military history (started thinking about this last night when I saw something about #1 again):

1) Reading about Charles XII for the first time and finding out where Poltava was located. This is where the most important real estate in the Russo-Swedish war was? Really?

2) Walking the ground at Gettysburg and wondering why Lee ever thought Pickett's charge was a good idea. Lee was my military hero as a kid, seeing the site of Pickett's charge was like taking Old Yeller out back.

3) Seeing Nagumo's search plan for Midway, frantically going back to see how many planes KB had and thinking, you guessed it, wtf.

Feel free to add.

+1

Post "Black Swan" tithe. Very good movie. Surprisingly so. I dint think Hollyweird could pull that off anymore. She's not a great actress, but she played very well.

so she's filled out since being a Cleaner wannabe in The Professional? flipping thru channels the other day and caught that one again...Gary Oldman is one of my favorites...

I liked that movie also.

Relatedly, standing on top of Little Round Top and looking down into the gap towards Big Round Top and wondering how on earth Hood got as close as he did to taking it.

I thought we still have until net year. Although there is that group in the midwest somewhere thats claiming it will be in July or August or somesuch.

I think I need to practice more for the apocalypse. Still havent bought Fallout Vegas.

Speaking of which...

On a recent long travel overseas, the hotel movie channel had the movie "2012". Being jetlagged to hell, I decided to put in on for a bit. What a steaming pile of drek that was.

Wait a minute, I thought that was a documentary.

Uhm, you mean you dont? In Sweden it's quite common. In fact, I don't think I know any guy that's engaged who isn't wearing an engagement ring.

From what i can find, the male engagement ring seems to be limited to Nordic countries, notably Sweden, Finland (Norway wasn't mentioned but i wouldn't be surprised.)

i was trying to find out if there was an OLD German tradition... evidence suggests "maybe". Doesn't seem to be a current tradition (except in Nordic countries).

So, Grollub - do men in Sweden continue to wear the "engagement ring" after marriage (which is what US women do, often wearing both rings), or do they switch to just wedding rings?

It apparently is a Nordic thing. Funny, I didn't know that until you asked

To answer your question - usually both the men and women just switch to the wedding ring. This one is usually a little more gaudy (for the woman) than the engagement ring which is just a plain gold ring.

Usually wedding rings here are just a plain gold ring, the engagement ring has diamonds etc on it. I've only known one man to have an engagement ring here, and we ripped the **** out of him for it

Yes, two engagements rings. Don't know if this is an old tradition though.

After marriage, the engagement rings are seldomly worn.

US tradition is more like the British (surprise, surprise)... the gaudy ring is the engagement ring, (usually) plain gold band for wedding ring... until now, i hadn't ever heard of an engagement ring for a man.

Women here will often wear both after marriage, but will also just switch to just the wedding ring afterward.

I think German women to not trust us German men enough to select a "proper" gaudy ring by ourselves, so we get to select only the plain engagement ring...
