ORIGINAL: Panzerjaeger Hortlund Overall, the brits are awesome at naming things when it comes to the military. The ship names are great and all, but what about the regiment names? King's Own Scottish Borderers, Black watch, The Gordon Highlanders etc... That is pure coolness..especially when compared to "134th Regimental Combat Team" or whatever. Warspite1 You are right there - The Black Watch - that name is simply the business No wonder Bony got his behind kicked at Waterloo. The name alone is frightening Didn't the Black Watch get their butts kicked at Culloden in their prior engagement? Well, no... they weren't officially formed until 1881, but of the predecessor unit (42nd Regiment of Foot, informally known as the Black Watch) :"... one company of the regiment fought at the Battle of Culloden for the Hanoverians under Dugald Campbell of Auchrossan, where they suffered no casualties. " So, no, it doesn't sound like they got their but kicked. The Campbells, who fought for the English (and have earned the scorn of many Scotts since then) were also known infomally as "The Black Watch", and also did OK at Culloden, but were on the losing side at Falkirk. EDIT: Clan Campbell, also known (unofficially) as "The Black Watch" for their tartan, originally formed some six "Black Watch" companies, that were eventually organized into the 43rd, renamed the 42nd Regiment of Foot, and eventually officially the Royal Highland Regiment "Black Watch" when it amalgamated with the 73rd Regiment of Foot (1881). In 1931 it was renamed "The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment)" and stayed that to 2006. In 2006, it was reorganized/renamed "The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS)", and is an infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
