Of course the Colonel was more of a clown then a threat. He tended to follow the Idi Amin model, but more humor, less blood.

If the Egyptian military follow in Attaturk's footsteps, Egypt will be in good hands until they have elections. If not, well, they didn't have to deal with Facebook and Twitter in the past.

Good heavens, man!! Did you have to bring that up?

Seriously, the regimes that are being overthrown now are a different breed than the monarchies of Europe in 1848. Better some ways, worse in others.


I just meant to say that the diverse groups were unified by wanting the regime out. When it comes time to forming a new state each voice will want part, as the many German states did in 1848. After so many years of being repressed under Metternich et al, they all wanted to achieve their own goals. The result is a unfocused mess. This may open the door for another military selected leader to emerge as head of state like the old regime and with a re-empowered military to support him. Same as the Monarchies of old Europe returned. I hope for the best and think that Egypt with it's history and 80+ million souls should enjoy a vibrant democracy. Warts and all

The UN and EU have been pressuring Turkey to get the Turkish military to turn it's back on Attaturk's legacy. Playing with fire, that.

Indeed. We play with with fire when we try to counteract the culture of those striving for democracy. It takes many forms, and none need match ours to be a true government of the people.

They phoned me some hour before lunch, telling me that they had to exchange all sleeves at the rear wheel suspensions, as they were not fitted correctly.

Me: "How nice of you to find it. Since it was your workshop that fitted those very same sleeves last April, and you use the practice of giving a one year warranty on all your jobs, then you could just fix it for free then ... ?"

They: "Ah, um ... wait a moment ... <clickety click> ... ah yes sir, we can see in our computer that we actually that did that job. We will fix it for you (In a more than grumpy tone)" ...

When I picked up the car just 30 mins ago, the guy at the customer reception told me that they had to put two guys working on that for the entire afternoon. Apparently, the mech who did the job last April had used wrong-sized nuts & bolts and forced them into place. That was why the sleeves weren't fitting correctly. The two guys fixing it had to cut away every one of them.

Oh, how I love punishing shoddy work!


ETA: The mech that did the shoddy work apparently didn't work there anymore. If he did, I would've loved being a fly on the wall when the other mechs who had to correct it caught up with him.


Clearly, and sadly, the same thing seems to happen the world over. I have had very similar experiences lately.

That quote combined with her dislike of the doberman is a damning indictment of your xGFU.

Dogs adapt to new circumstances, but they never forget. You can be quite certain that the dogs will remember which human saved them recently from the gas leak. They won't know what were the circumstances which led to you and not her to arrive home first, but they will remember it was you, the pack leader who rescued them. Also it will be very subtle, but the doberman would have picked up on the vibes that the xGFU did not care for him.

Whenever you start to get guilty feeling that you might be at fault (as per your subsequent post), banish those thoughts immediately with the recognition that the true friend of the dogs is you, not the xGFU. As I said before, dogs really do know who are the better humans. It is remarkable just how often females are envious of a good dog-human pack leader relationship.

Thinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Minnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnt!!!

Put a couple of boxes of this treasure in the freezer.....way in the back behind the bag of frozen peas. Then, in about July, when you are afraid your ears are going to melt off, pull them out and eat them while they are still ice cold!!!!!



Pretty funny, we do that too

And the following is a Southern thing I am sure, but when the kids were younger we would scoop up handfulls of snow ( it only happens once or twice a year on average ) , put the snow in a baggy, and freeze it. Then at some point in the summer we would pull them out and put it a drink, etc.

Seriously, the regimes that are being overthrown now are a different breed than the monarchies of Europe in 1848. Better some ways, worse in others.


The biggest worry expressed by a lot of commentators is that because of the lack of strong leadership in the Egyptian opposition, their gains might be stolen from them. Let's hope not.

Customer: “But it’s not even raining that much, and the water isn’t that high in the streets.”

Me: “I am sorry for any inconvenience but the courier can not risk driving through flood water.”

And those crowds who mobilized against Mubarak can mobilize again. It's the old generals who are the problem. They are indeed of the generation and mold of Sadat and Mubarak; the younger generation of officers were largely trained by the US, and they are of a different mindset.

Unlike you guys I am concerned for some time regarding all this...


Egypt is not Tahri square and Cairo and Alexandria - Egypt is 80+ million people.

Egypt was highly controlled state for 50+ years (Sadat and Mubarak) - nominally even socialist state (ever from Nasser) - but they did successfully suppress the religion groups entering the politics.

But, IIRC in all cases in that part of the world where there were elections the religious parties took control and never again enabled another election...

Also just remember what happened in Iran 30 years ago...

Europe 1988/1989 was specific and different because even 50+ years buried democratic traditions did emerge victorious...
