So Pac: A 7 ship SCTF shot out from the Fiji region today. This ended up in the Anatom and Tanna region. Maybe he is looking for more fast transports taking out troops. I won't be trying that soon with the entire US navy at Suva.

So Pac: Ok. Something is definitely up. Many TFs including CVs moved out today and seem to be heading to Tanna. The last IJN troops are off of that island. Allied troops have now taken their place! Looks like a fast transport TF.

Our long range G3M3 from Tulagi (!) actually strike down here and get skewered by LR CAP of Wildcats.

I am getting the KB ready. It looks like he's only brought 2 CVs out here. not sure, but that is what search indicates so far.

The KB will embark tomorrow to station just out of search range from Suva and be ready to move in should there seem to be a good chance. With Ryujo I should be slightly ahead in numbers, but the quality is still recovering from the recent clash. What will help no matter what happens is that two large A6M3a groups are available from Ndeni and Koumac for LR CAP and escort.

I'm reluctant to use the KB so soon after the last battle. If he's conducting offensive operations though, some of the CAP could be split and he might also not be expecting a strike thinking I'm still recovering. I'll play it turn by turn.

Also, some Kate and Val remnants of the CVs that went down will move to Luganville. This will probably get hammered by 4Es, but worth a try. A6M3a can escort from Ndeni to close to Tanna.

So Pac: The Allied CVs are reported to be in the Tanna hex. This is good news, considering the reduced flying that would happen if they remained there. I'm thinking of sending the KB in.

Luganville was hit by a 4E raid, as predicted, but the Nicks did well there shooting down 5 4Es. Only a few Vals were lost on the ground, but nothing should fly tomorrow due to the field damage.

Nells flew again as did Kates from Noumea, and both were hit as the escort from Koumac did not fly. Grrrr. I'll have to turn the Nells off now and put them back on search only as their moral dipped into the 50s. With 18 Emilys, 4 IJN 2E groups, and Jakes from several different locations, our search should be at least equal if not slightly better than the Allies. I've also got several groups of Jakes on the KB ships on night search 1k 10 hex range.

I'm going to move the KB into 8 hex range of Tanna. I'll keep them to the West of Luganville, right on or even out of range of search from Suva. This is extremely risky, but at least there is LBA support this time and I'm moving in everything I can fit on all bases in the area to augment the KB. I've even put a sacrificial group of Jakes on Efate, which has no air support, just to increase search in the area. He most likely will not bring the CVs to far north knowing that the Netties can reach down there, and not knowing how many groups I have at my disposal. Fingers crossed.

Because she missed the last battle refitting, the Hiryu has some of the best IJN pilots in her groups. All of them are in the the 70-80 exp range, and most have augmented skills in ASW and search from their beginning levels.

So Pac: The air phase began with a flight of A6M3a sweeping over Tanna to hit any LR CAP there. Unfortunately they flew into empty air and probably would have been better in an escort role.

The US CVs moved North and East, exactly 7 hexes from the position of the KB. Although the KB was sighted, the US CVs were not able to launch ANY attacks!!

There were severe storms two hexes away in Luganville and I'm guessing some part of this system is what kept the US planes from finding our CVs.

The first wave of 140 odd strike planes flew into clear weather over the US CVs just to the NE of Tanna. All were hit plus both fast battleships were stuck with torpedoes. The Washington took 4 in the first strike and the NC took 3. Of the CVs the Hornet got the brunt of the Kates fury with three torpedo hits and an Ammo storage explosion. Two duds hit the Lex in addition to the one that hit and exploded. This caused engine damage and might have helped the Kates in the afternoon phase. The Saratoga took two fish also reporting engine damage.

After already taking big losses going in due to fighters and flak, the Wildcats pounced on the way out and took down another 15 Kates and Vals.

Several other strikes went for ships at Tanna from Noumea and Koumac. These did little damage, but some Wildcats did fly that direction. Also, a 4E strike over Luganville diverted some of the KB CAP and they took down about 5 of the heavies with a few losses to show for it.

When the afternoon phase began and there had been no US strikes, I knew this was going to be a very good day! The late strike was small and the Vals didn't fly at all. Still, most Kates made it past the depleted CAP, flying from only the Lex (with a few leftovers from the other CVs still in the air), and the strike made sure the Hornet was going under and put the Lex and the NC into sinking condition. CA Indianapolis also took 3 torps on the day and the CLAA San Juan took one.

The US CVs were far enough out from land that it seems most of the Wilcats were lost to ops while only the Hornet groups went down with their ship. This likely confirms the other CVs are still afloat and could make it back to Suva if they are lucky. A map will follow with the plan for tomorrow.

Air Losses

The air losses on the day are staggering for both sides. Luckily I've got the Junyo groups to augment the depleted KB for tomorrow. They will fly onto Kaga and Akagi, and the zeros to Noumea to escort Bettys also flying in there.

This should mean the KB has a strike package of nearly 100 planes but almost 200 zeros still flying and LR CAP and escort help from LBA bases.

All available air power within range is brought to bear for tomorrow. I want to finish the job and make sure if there are any forays by surface groups they are punished for any damage they cause.

Here is the situation. The KB will move along the path shown to NE of the battle zone but trying to stay far enough out to sidestep any SCTFs rushing our way. Several SCTFs will also move in front to hopefully shield the KB and get into the area where damaged ships may be floundering back toward Suva.

Another G3M3 group flew into Tassafronga and at max range can hit this area with torps. At Lunga, Tulagi and Noumea other Netties will try to get in the mix, all set to max range.

Two other SCTFs are rushing in from Tulagi but I don't know whether they'll get far enough to play a part tomorrow.

I deliberated about sending the KB back to avoid surface threats, but I decided to go all in with the chance to take out US CV power for the next year at stake. Also, out here where it will be tough to predict our movement and where he doesn't have many undamaged fast ships, I'm banking on speed to protect the KB as well.

At Tanna the covering force for that invasion includes two old slow BBs, but I don't think they can make it up to be a factor without first hitting our BB/CA TF.

Jocke is understandably very low after yesterday's events. He said he couldn't even really work on the turn last night and didn't send me his customary late turn. I told him to take a day or two if he needed it, so we'll see what happens today. He mentioned that in the first battle he was ready to lose everything, but in this one he hadn't considered that as a possibility. It's just a freak event that the US CVs couldn't strike at all and I feel for him. Not fun to have luck ruin your well laid plans.

Another CL/DD TF is down to the West of Nadi. I hope this doesn't shoot up to strike, as it is probably the Boise!

After some negotiations, the game resumes.

Jocke is very down and wonders if it will be worth it to slog through most of 43 without offensive threats. I told him that while the Pacific could be tough, he still will have a strong air and land force in India and Burma. Also, the KB cannot be everywhere at once. He will not back out unless I want to end it here, but I feel he has more chances than he realizes just now.

Especially the way this turn played out!

subs: The night phase begins with the I-171 finding the injured Lexington and putting 2 fish in to finish her off. Banzai!

Then the Kingfish runs into Singapore and hits 3 mines. I'm sure that sub is toast.

So Pac: The fears I had came true to an extent. The Boise indeed did charge North and hit the KB. That was one of the longest battles I've seen. It just kept shooting. I'm still really shocked how poorly escorts react when hit in an Air Combat TF. The BB barely took part in the battle.

Anyway, eventually all ships escaped and the worst off, the Zuiho, only has moderate damage, with system 46, float 16 and engines 12 plus 4 fires still going. The ships will head back to Tulagi heavily escorted and at cruise speed.

During the air combat phase the KB planes plus others from New Caledonia put the Saratoga and the two fast BBs plus Indianapolis down for good at Tanna.

The Boise was hit during the afternoon along with several of the escorting DDs. It took two fish and two 250kg bombs and likely has seen it's last mission. I'll send in BBs to see if it's still above water tomorrow.

It all feels a little bittersweet, but if Jocke keeps finding the game interesting enough to continue, this could mean I will have a better chance of getting to my goal of lasting late into 45 and possibly 46. I want jets!

Hopefully, Jocke will continue. A heavy blow, but the Allies will make up the CV losses. What really hurts is losing North Carolina and Washington.

I think he would love a PM from you. PLease add support if you want to. It's just hard for him to think that after waiting so long to be able to do something that it's now going to be many more months of waiting.

I was seriously jumping up and down about getting the two fast BBs. I promptly looked through the queue and got depressed again about how many he will eventually get, but that is down the road. I'll enjoy only having I think 3-4 of those monsters around in the near future.

In an email about the recent turn Jocke said he had another risky last attempt to hit me (aside from the Boise dash) that didn't pan out apparently. I wonder if the British CVs are nearby or what that might have been? I know Enterprise should either be growing coral or stuck in Suva for a long time, and the Yorktown shouldn't be much better after only three weeks since an ammo storage explosion. So not sure what might have been sent hunting for me unless it was some combo of a few CVEs and British CVs. Interesting.

I think he has a lot of options. Come March he could take the Aleutians. He can drive into Burma. Oz is a backwater for me, but maybe he doesn't realize any of that. I'm so thin now in the DEI he could waltz into Timor and take it with a division. Luckily now I have time to fill those holes, but he does have options for causing problems even without CVs. Especially with all of the dispensable quick loading ships coming online in 43.

Well, you mustn't start your offensive too early... Sometimes it is fine to take what you got and leave the rest be. That's why I didn't attack your KB the next day.
There was a chance, but the almost certain outcome was not in my favour. I decided to keep it as a "superior victory" and not turn it into a "good victory"...

Had he backed down after the first battle, it would've been better...

There is something to be said for deception as well, and I've never had any doubt that all of the Allied focus is on the So Pac area.

+1 - the Allies can recover from huge losses as some players have demonstrated... Their schedule might be put back a little, but they will still come.

The losses of those CVs will hurt him, for sure, but not that much as one may think...there are a lot pf approaching routes that don t need the cv support...obviously you won't have to fear a big allied leap for some time, which is damn good for the japs....

I don't think he spent enough time closing down both Koumac and Noumea before his invasion. Koumac can be reached from Australian bases while Noumea can be reached from Suva. If he had done so, he could have placed his CV to the South and SE of Tanna and placed his transports at risk. I prefer to place extra fighters on my American CVs from the beginning of the war. A Marine fighter group of 18 planes go on each and even with the July '42 re-sizing of the Navy fighters (27 to 36), I still keep the Marines on till the Hellcats come out. 48 fighters per CV is a good number to help ensure survivability.

On my side the Soryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku are gone.

The allies have lost Wasp, Hornet, Sara and Lex for certain. Enterprise is likely
Sunk as well, while Yorktown had an ammo storage explosion 3 weeks ago game time
and should be damaged in Suva.

So my best guess is that the allies are down to one CV which may not be operational.

He has lost all of China, which should make Burma tougher. But I agree. There are options, especially with the LSTs coming online next month. They should enable small quick-unloading operations in places the KB is not.

It's great to win this, but many Allied players have shown that winning a battle or two as Japan means little in the end.

Yes. I agree. I was able to search, escort and strike from those bases when he could have closed both.

subs: Subs flooded the approaches to Fiji. See map below. They will now resume a blockade of the area to try and hit the Yorktown if she attempts a move out of Suva, assuming she is still there.

So Pac: Mutsu puts an end to Boise's run, finally. She took a torpedo very early in the DEI, and then disappeared for some time, only to reemerge as the scourge of the IJN here in the South Pacific.

The only other action down here today was anti-sub patrols by the Allies and the bombardment of Tanna, hitting a few US ground troops.
