SUBS: Just outside Soerabaja during the night I-124 intercepted CL Sumatra leaving the area and put one torp into her. If I remember rightly this is the CL that appears in Soerabaja around now in a damaged state, and she was smoking before the attack. Hopefully this was enough to put her under. Can't be sure though.

DEI: Bandjermasin is invaded today to provide a forward airbase for the Java invasions. I'm thinking of going in at both Banjowengi and Semarang. Another group of Dutch bombers sorties against the TF and is wiped out by LR CAP.

CHINA: It looks like a full ten corps were wiped out yesterday from the attack results today at Nanyang. One more seems to have been wiped out today, as well as the 181 listed infantry squads destroyed. Sucks that i didn't get numbers for the amount of squads actually destroyed for the units that were surrounded and surrendered.

Chengchow was taken with no opposition. Loyang should fall tomorrow.

After sweeping the base one group of Sallys hit Changsha, and surprisingly found the AVG there. One plane was destroyed and 11 more damaged. More of this to come.

PI: In preparation for our coming reinforcements, some BBs hit Cagayan pretty hard. This should soften the troops up.

MALAYA: Troops are still resting. The IJAAF is doing good work to suppress for building, as 31 field hits were accompanied by 12 on the base and 3 supply hits today.

DEI: Bandjermasin is captured and a base force will land tomorrow. Oscars and Ryujo's zeros will fly in.

The 4Es are still lurking and probing for opportunities around the DEI. He is aiming at oil and resources mostly. Today he hit Samarinda, and our CAP just didn't get there, with only one zero showing up. Only a few hits, but it's annoying.

CHINA: At Nanyang the Chinese still hold on. Today the 19:1 DA gets 215 infantry squads and forces another unit to surrender.

PI: Tomorrow all troops will be in place and a bombardment will see again what we're facing and hopefully produce some casualties.

Kates hit the fields at Cagayan. Another BB bombardment TF should hit the base tomorrow. I'd like the place to be nice and soft when the troops arrive in a few days. Many are landing now at Butuan.

PACIFIC: Munda is invaded.

BURMA: Sonias hit Rangoon. Nothing major. The AVG seems to have pulled back completely here now.

Nice work at Nanyang!

What are your future plans for China? Push up and try to grab Sian? Sorry if you already answered this. I´m on my phone and the small screen makes it hard to read AARs!

Yep. Sian is next. He's got a roadblock forming. I'll solidify it and try to move around on the slow road to flank it as well. More soon about plans.

SUBS: The I-172 picks off xAK Agwimonte near Christmas Island, Pacific. Looks like it was traveling solo. If he's going to be doing that, I need to start getting more subs into the Pacific!

DEI: Air groups move into Bandjermasin and prepare for sweeps across Java. A fast transport TF is targeting Semarang and should be there within a few days if conditions look amenable. There are about 60 bombers at Bangoeng, but not many at either Batavia or Soerabaja. Not sure where the fighters are just now.

CHINA: At Nanyang another 300 or so infantry squads destroyed and it looks like there are only a few more still hanging on.

PI: All units are in place in Manila, but the Allies are evacuating the base, so we might not get a chance to damage any of them. Too bad.

Another naval bombardment at Cagayan puts the base at near 100% damage to fields and forts. Troops should all arrive within the next few days.

A good raid at Clark today and another Cat destroyed. Not sure why these very valuable planes are still based here?

MALAYA: Bombardments will commence at Singapore tomorrow.

CHINA: At Nanyang another DA gets a 70:1 with 162 infantry squads destroyed, and after the turn it appears all KMT units have evaporated there. Banzai!!

Now it appears a roadblock is forming in the foist one hex East of Sian. We'll move quickly to see if our stack can overwhelm it before it's complete. If we don't have 3 to 1 odds I'll camp and move to flank with 2k AV of tanks and brigades, plus a division moving from near Yenan. I'll bypass that base, as it is terrible to supply and there is a force of 2 corps moving through the mountains to reinforce it or reconquer it. I'l let them wither.

PI: It is taking a long time to get all of the units disembarked at Butuan, but it should be worth it in speed of conquest once they arrive in Cagayan.

Manila falls after being abandoned today. I'l now garrison and move to Clark quickly. All forces are already in motion to enter from all hex-sides.

PACIFIC: Lae is invaded. I'm getting nervous about sending anything near Port Moresby as I'm sure soon some bombers will appear there. Recon is now being moved to the area to check out what he's been doing in New Guinea.

BURMA: HQ decided to begin challenging the Burma front with some incursions. Several bases are lightly held behind Rangoon and Moulmein. Pegu, Prome, and Taung Gi will be targeted in succession. I want to see how and with what he reacts. Maybe a para move could also make him abandon Moulmein which would be great. Not likely though.

So today the 1st Raiding rgt took Pegu. It will be flown out tomorrow.

MALAYA: The bombardment goes well at Palembang. I'll keep it on for a few days. It looks like he's lost 200 AV from the first attack. We're down about 400 AV, but quickly recovering.

DEI: Palembang fields are at 100% damage. I'll be able to now concentrate on Java for a short while with the Singkawang Nells.

Bengkalis magically went over to our side without invasion. This means that Torsten is of course now trying to bomb the oil. Our CAP at Johore Baru leaked over, but only one zero got into the 4Es and couldn't stop a few hits. Tomorrow I'll LR CAP.

CHINA: In SE China another groups of Corps is pushed back and will now most likely be able to get back to safety at Henyang. Took another 74 infantry squads off them.

PI: No movements out of Clark to mess up our moves into it, which is a relief. He probably doesn't know how little I have here.

One thing i noticed today which is very interesting. There is over 90k supplies in Manila! I wonder if a lot of Allied supply was left there when they evacuated?

BURMA: The paras make it back safely with no LR CAPing of Pegu.

MALAYA: Another successful bombardment at Singers.

The units at Ternate will move to invade Dili. Another engineer unit will also be moved in. Both Ambon and Koepang look to be set up as minor speed bumps in the area. I'll go around them and bomb for a while before attacking directly.

There is stil flak over Clark so if he did lose that it hasn't affected things yet. I'm going to split the bombing now to Clark and Bataan to hopefully get both firing their AA and using supply, as well as slowing the fortification. Clark has between 30-40 damage a day lately.

DEI: A fast transport landed a preliminary invasion force at Semarang during the night. This was intended more as a scouting force than a real invasion. Good thing too. Torsten has moved the Batavia CD gun unit to Semarang. A 50 AV unit that ripped into the CLs and DDs carrying the Kure 2nd SNLF ashore. Luckily the troops made it intact. I'll wait for paras or other forces to be available before starting to attack here.

I still need more supply to Bandjermasin to give drop tank availability to give air cover here. I got lucky that he didn't sortie heavily against this fast transport after unloading during the day phase. Only a few Dutch came out to play, but he's also been using Seagulls to hit shipping and today scored one hit on the CL Kuma at Semarang. Only 10 system damage was incurred though.

CHINA: The AVG jumped some Sonias today bombing Chinese troops. It sucks to give them kills and make better US pilots at this stage. On the day 14 Sonias were lost.

PI: Another BB assault on Cagayan. Troops are nearly in place for a DA.

BURMA: Another para-drop takes Taung Gyi. The purpose of these is to see what forces will move to reinforce and to destabilize the defenses. Also, the plan is to take Prome soon and instead of pulling units out immediately as with the first two drops, to send in a Naval Guard and engineers. Most of the Burmese defense is forward in Pegu and Moulmein, and Rangoon must keep a garrison, so it will be harder and take longer to pull back to Prome to battle the incursion. If I can hold it, this cuts off one significant retreat for forces in the area.

Rangoon was hit hard today by Netties. No opposition here again.

MALAYA: Another successful bombardment. Since I'm actually reducing his AV while mine is growing, I'll keep this up for a few more days. The 18th division is back to 142 AV strength now, from 15 AV after the crossing.

After the crushing defeat at Nanyang, reinforcement Chinese forces have moved to a defensible spot one hex from Sian in the forest. This looks like a sizable army, with more units en route. I will move in with the bulk of my force and attempt to flank with another army of about 2k AV, hoping this will force him back to Sian where the bombing will be more effective against the troops. In the meantime I will concentrate forces to bomb Sian fields extensively.

Burma is being fought for at least for the moment by the Allies. This makes me think that Torsten assumes he cannot be flanked by sea without the KB and thus has freedom to include strong units that don't start here in the defense. Hopefully I can use this to my advantage.

I'll not attack until Singapore is finished and several divisions can move in, but I'll keep pressure up from the air and through para-drops. Securing Prome will b a priority and will come closer to the end in Singapore, so that hopefully some units there could rail in to assist.

The Allies are using virtually no air forces here for the moment. I have the two 45 plane crack groups in Pisanoluke, plus Betties and Nells in Bangkok.

Not much is left i njava, so I want to get moving there quickly. The Semarang force will be reinforced, but first I have to make sure the Dutch and British air forces are whittled down. Units are ready to go at Batavia, and will embark toward Bandjermasin to be prepared. Banjowengi is ask a target, although there are two units and possible mines in the hex.

At Singapore units are resting and bombarding. In another few days I'll DA again.

The Palembang force is recovering from its failed attack. It is nearing 1000 AV again.

Uhm, perhaps a stupid question but what is KMT?

I think you look really strong in China! Any plans for closing the Burma road? I don´t think Torsten will be as stupid as I and loose control of his escape route to the west. He will probably garrison the mountains pretty strongly. Can be a good trap catch alot of Chinese. As soon as they run out of supply it won´t matter how many they are! :)

The KMT is short for Kuomintang, or the Chinese Nationalist Party under Chaing Kai-shek. So most of the Chinese during WWII, nominally at least, if not practically.

The only way to really get enough into the mountains is if I choose to move units from Singapore into China once that falls. I'll have to see what the situation is like, but I assume I'll still need them in Java, Sumatra and Burma. Then maybe in the PI to finish that off. Then Ill have to see if I can actually get Port Moresby at all, as well as Wake. A lot still to do without the KB, but there might be a window where some things in the Pacific can be achieved.

Ah, I see!

Regarding PM/Wake. I think you need to make a descision pretty soon on what your priorities are. I´m not so sure getting Wake and/or PM is more important then knocking out China. Then again I have been wrong before. On occation!

SUBS: Near Madjene Porpoise takes two hits. He is still putting subs into base hexes all over the DEI.

Stingray is hit trying to get at the BB TF near Balikpapan and takes 4 hits after its 4 torps miss one of the escorting DDs. It is sighted again and given 5 more after bottoming out. Then the sub runs into a fast combat TF and gets 2 more hits. It's not showing any damage after the hits, but a few were direct, so it'll likely be heading home at least.

DEI: Nells hit some minor ships in Batavia port today. No attempts to move troops to Semarang or hit our force there. I do se a lot of planes moving around to get ready to meet the next wave though. That is a good thing. I'll have 2 DDs 'patrolling' within 4 hexes of Soerabaja tomorrow. This is to protect against the PTs that have moved down the coast to Semarang and escort the supply convoy heading to Bandjermasin. Of course, they will be CAPed as well.

CHINA: Near Loyang a small group of Chinese units is run down and attacked. Another 86 infantry squads destroyed.

PI: Another few days still to get all units in place to attack Cagayan. Clark is now shut off on all sides and there are 900 AV of troops in the base. These will stay to keep the Allied troops bottled up, but nothing more will be added for a good while.

BURMA: The paras are pulled out of Taung Gyi and will rest up now.

MALAYA: More bombardments.

PACIFIC: There is a ship listed as 'AV' moving near Ocean Island. I have 3 DDs in the area and will send them to intercept.

DEI: One of the fast transport TFs moving to Bandjermasin gets too close to Java and takes a 300 pounder on top of Takao. It must have bounced right off of that awesome superstructure, because NO damage was listed after the turn. I got very lucky in the second wave as a bunch of Swordfish sortied but missed their marks. Whew!

CHINA: It's a race to the hex near Sian now. I think Torsten will get most of his forces there unmolested. I'm already planning the flanking force, so hopefully I can force him back to the Sian hex. Kukong should fall tomorrow as we've just moved in and it looks like he's evacuating.

PACIFIC: The 3 DDs find AMC Hector sneaking around the Gilberts. It is summarily dispatched in the night.

SUBS: The same fast transport TF that was hit by air strikes yesterday is located by USS Salmon today and Maya takes one in the gut. Luckily her damage is light, at only 24 float an 12 system. The TF is unloading at Bandjermasin and will make for Hong Kong after.

DEI: Both Ambon and Koepang have constant damage at the bases now as the Bettys from Kendari continue to work on them. I've seen no shipping enter the area to reinforce or resupply.

CHINA: The AVG has moved around a lot and today our bombers got lucky and hit them at Henyang. Only one plane destroyed, but others damaged. He doesn't fly CAP where they are based usually, which will be interesting as my attacks get stronger and more supported. Kukong is captured today.

PI: In two days all should be ready to go at Cagayan.

MALAYA: Troops are suffieciently rested and recovered from the crossing. Tomorrow I'll set them to DA and see what they can do.

SUBS: I-2 ran into a lone transport, xAK Steel Scientist near Lord Howe Island and put her under.

The Maya TF ran into Salmon again but the sub could not follow up on her previous day's success.

MALAYA: At Singapore the troops get another 1:1, which is great, and lowered forts to 2. The disablements are high, so another rest is in order here. I'm not in much of a hurry and would rather have some serviceable divisions to use when this battle is finished.

DEI: Some stragglers from Balikpapan tried to interpose themselves on our new airbase at Bandjermasin, but were repulsed today. The base is now working but still needs more supply to allow drop tanks. Help is on the way.

A vacant Dili is invaded and will be taken tomorrow at Cagayan.

CHINA: Another few Chinese units are nailed near Kanshien.

PI: All troops will be in place and bombard tomorrow.

I have read your AAR (and not Historiker's) and wow what a ruff opening day for you! it sure is something just to hang in there, and you still could win. I have been wondering if auto victory could be achieved by just killing and re-killing lots of Chinese?

And I absolutely love the pictures.

Great AAR: love the pictures and other atmospherics, not to mention the tension from losing half the KB. Looks like you are making a good recovery and using his agressiveness against him pretty well in China.

Good luck!

Cheers,
CC

Thanks guys. This game is almost more fun because the pressure is off after losing those CVs. I feel more loose with forces in some places, but also have to re-think portions of the game that would be easy with the full KB. Like the entire Pacific!

Just to get Torsten to commit two sections of the AVG in China is a positive for me. He's used them well, but it's left me dominant in the SRA and Burma, plus the supply drain of operating them there could be significant. As for the troops, well, I'll post some figures soon that will put some perspective on what he risked and lost with the offensive he launched. I think auto-victory for me is well out of reach in this game, but a long interesting game could still be possible, and that is the goal.

SUBS: Another lone xAK taken out, the J.L. Luckenbach. This time near Wake, by I-9.

Torsten is starting to be annoyed that he is getting so many duds against my DDs. He really is as well, and I feel very fortunate not to have lost several of them in the last week. I'm surprised how often he has gotten hits, even without detonation. DDs should be challenging game for a sub, especially when they're in ASW TFs as most of these are.

DEI: Dili is taken by a small AF Coy. Another 20 AV SNLF is on the way, as is an engineer unit. He is moving units from Lautern thinking that this is all that's here. I hep he continues, so I can move behind into that base. I'll otherwise wait until units from Cagayan are available and send a full SNLF there.

CHINA: The first of the more concentrated air raids hit Changsha today. Good damage on the fields and numerous supply hits from the 150 bombers involved.

PI: Cagayan will be taken tomorrow. All troops are in place. This will give me 1k AV to play with in the SE DEI and on Java.

BURMA: A stalemate at Moulmein continues.

MALAYA: Everyone rested today. Tomorrow bombardment will continue.

I've just done some counting. It appears that over the course of the war so far, 7,567 Chinese infantry squads have been destroyed!!! That is a lot!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the total possible for the Chinese is somewhere around 22k AV when everything is at full TOE. So even though many of these will come back, that is at this point 21.62 months of replacements!

If 17 corps were destroyed at Nanyang, then maybe at 200AV each when they come back, that would be 3400 squads of new low moral and low experience mouths to feed.

7,567 Squads is ALOT! As you say its almost two years worth of replacements!

The downside is that he will probably have it easier with supply so even if you face less AV in raw numbers the AV you face will be harder to defeat! But he must be severly weakend all over China by this! Time to bring the hammer and start grinding him down! :)

SUBS: Cuttlefish takes 3 hits near Balikpapan. After it's success yesterday O21 takes 5 hits and will be heading back for repairs.

DEI: Another TF will move in toward Semarang tomorrow. The Oscars and zeros from Bandjermasin will cover. Fingers crossed. Two DDs will be closest to Soerabaja (4 hexes out) as a shield from PTs and will be CAPed heavily.

CHINA: The division near Yenan is still marching to catch one Chinese Corps on it's way to Sian. It should get an attack tomorrow.

Erick, I can tell you that you are wrong about the size of the Chinese. I am at Feb 21, 1942 and I have 30,499
active Chinese rifle Squads. Plus 1096 Cavalry squads, 103 Engineers, and 2176 MMG sections. That is 33,784 AV total.
So you have destroyed about 22% of his total AV at this point. Not to mention the Mortars, FA, At guns, and support.

Thanks Dan. Great info. It's been a long time since I've been on that side of the fence. It's amazing how many there are!

DEI: In the Java Sea the 2 DD shielding force is hit by everything the Allies can bring in the area. The CAP does well, severely diminishing both fighter and strike plane stocks. The Minegumo takes one fish and might not make it back to port. She has 74 float damage and is only making 6 knots. I'll put her in cruise and hope for the best. Still, with over 40 Allied planes destroyed on the day, a good result. The troops are safely moving forward.

Batavia port is hit by Nells again, and several more minor ships are hit hard.

A small 2 plane raid of 4E comes to Balikpapan and the CAP likely takes out both.

CHINA: So based on the information supplied by Dan above, I have a long way to go in China still. I knew that, but it seems even more daunting now.

The division near Yenan wins another fight and moves forward.

BURMA: Still hitting Rangoon and Moulmein and no sign of Allied air power.

MALAYA: Another bombardment. The troops are as rested as possible, and tomorrow we'll try a DA.

SUBS: The Salmon takes 6 hits, but only one is direct. Should just mean time back in port for this sub.

DEI: An air raid on Soerabaja, where many of the aircraft damaged in yesterdays attacks were on the ground, further devasted the Dutch air force. I'll hit at Bandoeng tomorrow, where over 50 bombers are based.

PACIFIC: Recon shows bombers at Port Moresby along with a group of search planes. I'll have to be careful around here.

BURMA: A brazen unescorted atack on the fields at Lashio caught a group of Blenheims on the the ground, destroying one. The bombardment at Moumein shows that it will be a stalemate here for some time.

MALAYA: The DA at Singapore goes fairly well. Forts are down to one, and a good number of Allied troops were destroyed, but our losses were greater. I'll keep it on for tomorrow and hope for better.
