A handful of "We the People" petitions calling for the government to allow various states to secede cropped up following President Obama's reelection.

What is there to give more thought to? These petitions did not exist until the day after the election. These petitions would not exist if their guy won. It's just more dumbing down of the U.S., "I didn't get my choice so I am going to cry and pout about it".

I am quite sure that if the other party had come to power and tried to continue to make the States and the people "smaller" while the government grew to it's current (and future further) enormity, those petitions would have come up.
It's not who's in power. You need to get that straight. It's what that person does to overreach their power that counts.
Taking away from States Rights, taking from the people, and growing a massive country busting debt is something that must be pushed back against.

I don't care what party they are. And, if it is "crying" or "pouting" that you want to use to belittle an opposing argument, I will pout and cry all I want to get America back on track. Even if it is one pout or one cry at a time. Heck, I have over a hundred years of progressive pollution to overcome. And, I have to do it one soul at a time. Lord knows what our last few generations of school kids have been taught.

And, if you want to cry for the right reasons, cry for the thousand plus children who were killed the same day the school children in Conn. were killed. There is more than one evil nut job out there.

Your response is spot on. I voted for George W. Bush(twice). But by his second term I was furious with him because of the incredible expansion of the government-with new agencies and programs that we could not pay for. The old and tired argument that people like me are unhappy because Mr. O is president shows unwillingness to admit that many Americans despise gigantic government, with it's ever spreading control in our lives.

I am a fiscal conservative, and neither of the parties cover that. Republicans are social conservative, and fiscally conservative in name only, and only when the Dems are in power. They hand out corporate welfare (e.g. defense) while the Dems prefer social program handouts. The only guy that comes close is Ron Paul, and he seems a bit crazy at times. I remember during one debate in 2008 that he was the only one that could answer the question correctly about whether as the President if he would declare war over some scenario.

As far as these petitions go, I am just not buying it. If what you say is true, then these petitions should have existed long before the election. As you say, "It's not who's in power", and that is exactly right, the other guy wasn't going to solve any of the problems you mention. These petitions should have started with the passing of the patriot act, then really gone crazy with the litany of abuses of power that followed and the ballooning of the government. Nothing you can say will sway my opinion on the phoniness and childishness of these petitions due to the timing. Because if the petitions were truly about states rights issues, these petitions would have existed long before the day after the election.

This just in from The Hill

"The White House has responded to a handful of petitions calling for various states to be given the right to secede from the United States, calling for unity and participatory government instead."

"The states included in the response are Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. The Texas petition received over 125,000 signatures, more than any other."

I fear many people truly do not understand how serious most Americans take the Bill of Rights and especially the second amendment.

125K in Texas is not exactly an overwhelming number. There are probably that many that are still mad about the War of Northern Aggression.

Anyway I voted Libertarian last time. They are way too anarchist for me but I didn't like the other choices. I follow them on facebook and some of their posts are good.

{my emphasis added above}

The White House online petitioning system was not launched until September 22, 2011; therefore any such online petitions in response to the Patriot Act or other actions that took place prior to its launch could not have occurred.

They could not have existed "long before" the day after the election as the process was launched less than 60 days before Election Day.

I see. So that makes them an even bigger joke because there is no real organization or effort behind them. It's just another internet petition thing.

Good points danlongman. I am a very fiscal and social conservative. But I have never, ever understood the "...will not sway my opinion crowd". I graduated college in 1989 and was an on fire Conservative Republican. I was for the death penalty, but thought all abortions should be allowed, gung-ho for the war on drugs. And for the shocker, at age 22 I had no problem with most gun laws. Over the years, reading the likes of William F. Buckley, Thomas Sowell and Frederick Hayek, amongst others, many of my opinions changed. I now staunchly oppose the death penalty because we should never execute even one innocent person, and that has happened in the U.S. The drug war has been lost and millions have gone to prison for many petty drug crimes. Today I have a much healthier, and wiser, understanding of the sanctity of the Bill of Rights. Each right is as sacred as the others. Those rights are really easy to understand by simply reading them. It helps too to read the writings of the men who crafted the Bill of Rights. When the father of that document,George Mason, writes-" ... to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them."[/b], then how does anyone say that the second amendment is for "hunting"??

I could go on, but that makes the point that any person of serious intellect cannot simply cling to their beliefs just for the sake of never giving in. I gracefully changed my mind on many things over the last 24 years, and that makes me proud.

HMMM. No, wodin started this thread to discuss gun control in the States. I threw in my thoughts on the secession petitions because I feel they are not just about being unhappy about President Obama. Not the man, but the man's ideas...and those ideas encompass things antithetic to what this country is supposed to be. The petitioner's are mostly disgusted with the bloat of Federal rule and the mind-numbing expansion of Federal powers. Gun control and the second amendment are the serious discussion topics, secession is not feasible, or wanted by me...NOT YET.

This is the biggest joke and tragedy all wrapped in one.
Disagree with the current President and you are racist because he is black? How specious the argument? It is not worthy of a response beyond this one.

And, Biden is a drunkard and a lying old fool. "Original thinker" is the most unreasonable of attributes given to him. His agenda is the American agenda ... I think not. His socialist coat well suites him.

Amen. As long as many citizens suck on the teat the government handouts, and vote accordingly, we are all doomed. Especially if they remain in ignorance due to lack of education in the true history of our country.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner. A republic is a well armed sheep contesting that vote?
Only the education of the electorit will save us. And, not an education based on social agendas contrary to the founding ideal.

We need Americans standing for America. The world was pulled from the mire because of American foundational principles. Even the wealth of the world increased because of it.
Lincoln said it best, "nation divided against itself surely will not stand". Too bad we have so many willing to divide instead of unite. These things happen when the masses are uneducated?

You said it brother. And those I can't name are dividing more than the others I can't name. When a president tells the other side I won we do things my way, we are in a world of hurt. Hell, even the great Ronald Reagan pulled in a whole slew of Democrats, sat down and ironed out a lot of differences. Bill Clinton tried the "my way or the highway" approach and the Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives for the first time in decades. After that trouncing Ole Bill sat down with the Republican leaders and worked out a balanced budget and welfare reform.

Whew, I would rather engage in this debate than keep watching this horrible movie. Think Les Miserable his about to see my backside.

I've given up hope. Both parties are crap, and voting is an illusion because they are both getting kickbacks from mostly the same lobbyists. I tried voting for any other party than Dem/Rep, and there is only like one or two guys on the whole ticket to vote for. These days they all act like a bunch of children to top it off, and can't even come to agreement on the simplest of things. It really sends me in a rage when I see those idiots use the credit rating as a bargaining chip.

It's really not that hard to balance a damn budget. I think the problem stems from these guys being so far removed from having to live within a budget because they are all so rich, and pandering to their constituencies. Meh, not going to rant any more on them.

I haven't given up. I'm with the gentlemen here who feel the need to fight to keep the constitutional principals, as close as, possible to that intended by the founders of our great country. And right now that fight for me is my vote. And spread the word as much as I am capable.

But I agree totally with your point below. It truly is frustrating to watch the spending by politicians.

I've given up hope. Both parties are crap, and voting is an illusion because they are both getting kickbacks from mostly the same lobbyists.

Please do not give up hope. That is what they want you to do. They isolate us through the use of class warfare and race. When we feel alone we lose our power. Remember it is WE THE PEOPLE and not me the person?
Our rights do not come from any government. We have to push back against government's intrusions. And, we can do it.

I think it is the power, not so much the money. Maybe power first, money later?
Power overtakes most of them eventually. To maintain that power they have to take wealth (and guns) from those who have it.
If we did what the US government has been doing we'd be in jail. That is the sad truth.
It's always easy to agree to take money and guns from someone else. Especially if you demonize those who have either. But, if you look at money and guns as rights, of the people, it should be harder to take the rights than the "things".

When politicians believe, and get you to believe, that all that you have belongs to the government ... and they let you keep some things to keep you passive ... we truly have given up. It's up to us to keep them on their toes?

How can we do that if we are defenseless little sheep?

RR

It was Norway

I am so sorry. Oftentimes Americans just don't know one country from another. For that, I am truly sorry.

[ed] but does Norway v Sweden in some way inform in the premis?

Sami.

I am on the floor laughing. Warspite1 is NOT American. He is a goofy Brit. And God bless him and his home town of Uttoxeter.

Your getting confused...Natali was talking about himself\herself not Warspite.

Confused??? Me? Never. Well, maybe this one time.

warspite1, I am truly sorry for the confusion. I was talking about myself. I live in the US SW desert and our idea of foreign countries is Vegas, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and China (ok, and parts of Cali). We don't know from Europe, so we get confused sometimes. Maybe we are dumbasses but not in a nasty way. Please be a bit patient. Thanks. Sami

I hope this is sarcasm. Original? Yeah, gun control, raise taxes and spend, spend and spend. Very original.
