Good morning. CB, going out for the fishing...err, ice fishing opener?

Nah. Wife unit works 1.5 days this weekend, so I'll be corraling the young 'uns. Unless...

...Say, Shanilec, how far are you from Fargo? And how many seats 'ya got in your boat?

72 boring miles. We'll tie an inner tube to the back of the boat for ya'. Though not much fishing around these parts, still 12 to 20" depending on which lake.

Twin Cities cold? Sissies.

He doesn't need a boat. Just a truck and an extra seat in the ice fishing shed.

Well, no normal people WILLINGLY join a navy or an air force.

Dixie I am sure I have just seen a Catalina and a Swordfish flying over South London. There were also five helicopters - Sea King, Lynx, Puma and two others flying in close formation.

Any idea what is going on?
warspite1

Found it on the website! There is a flypast commemorating the Battle of the Atlantic at Greenwich. Unbelievable - why didn't they advertise it?!?!?!?

Seeing that Swordfish has made my day Funny to see loads of blokes looking intently up at the sky on my way home - while women just carried on walking

Warspite1,

The Swordfish and the Catalina I get, but why the Helis associated with the "Battle of the Atlantic"?

I'm guessing that the FAA was trying to do a "Heritage flight" equivalent. But they retired the last Sea Harrier. So if the FAA has no fixed wings , you use what you have. And that's helo's.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, been a busy boy.

The RN do have a heritage flight of sorts. But compared to the RAF's BBMF it's a smaller effort that's (iirc) got far more civvy involvement. They've got a mix of stuff, but there isn't much WW2 era FAA stuff kicking about really, a couple of Swordfish and a Firefly is about the lot I think*. They've got a Sea Fury, that came to CGY for a visit last summer but the pilot taxyed his a/c into some steps...

There wasn't much call for Seafires post-war, let alone Fulmars, Barracudas or Albacores. The BBMF are lucky that Spitfires were used quite widely after the war so there are a lot still around.

*Old Warden have a Sea Hurricane as well, the only flying one of her type surviving.

Good evening friends.

Back from Belgium/Holland.

Well, what did your liquid refreshment reconnaissance in force teach you about your preferences? A full SITREP, if you please.

ETA: I guess it would be an After Ale Report (AAR) or After Pilsner Bulletin (APB)?

Watched The Bourne Legacy. Fell asleep halfway through.

A tip for 'action / adventure' directors: try to have some, will ya? Otherwise, theatre audiences may be bored waiting for anything interesting to happen.

Sorry, no AAR. Were not that many ales. Many lager and trapister beers though

BTW , if any Threadsters are in the Omaha Nebraska area next saturday we're hosting our 1st annual "Cold War Victory Party".
Dress is "party like it's 1962....think Madmen". Or come as your favorite Dr. Strangelove character. Blini's vs. Burgers, Stoli vs. Budweiser. AS Yakov Smirnoff used to say "In America you can always find a party , in the USSR the party can always find you".So don't disappoint the "party" . Let me know if you'll be in the area.

Sounds like fun Steve. Wish I could join you. You had me at "Stoli".

Just curious-why 1962 instead of 1989? Just wondering.

Also, you got that turn done yet?

Your not going to let me sleep on that turn, are you?
1962 is a lot more "exotic" to most of the younger folks we know. The late intrest in everything "Madmen", "PanAm", and similar movies and TV shows. And a lot of people think the most dangerous time in the cold war was the Cuban missile crisis. Frankly I think 1973, 1983 and 1986 were just as dangerous, just not well publized.

Also, 1962 was in many ways a more refined era. People wore suits and ties to parties, and behavior was more....well regimented. The people who seem most interested in this party are actually youngsters (20-30 Year olds). For them 1962 is as exotic and far away as 1922 or 1862. I'll probably be the oldest one there , and I do have some memories of the time (I was only five). Everyone else wasn't born. And of course a lot of this parties theme revolves around "DR. Strangelove".

The sidewalks are safe for a few more days. Alex didn't have one of the forms from his school that he needed to bring, so he'll try again this Friday. I still got a half day out of it.
