Looks like I am getting back from Scout Camp just in time to see that CBs tyranny is continuing, will have to do something about that.

Spent the last 30 min catching up on my fellow thread mates.

My condolences Schanilec, losing a friend to an accident is hard.

Mike, hope things get worked out well.

Checking my schedule to see if there are any soccer matches in the future, there are none, sigh of relief.

My son has enough Lego blocks as the damage to my feet show.

Laughed my @$$ off with the Tornado landing!

Out and about this morning, had a nice flea market find. A 1st edition of "History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II" by Robert Sherrod for $1.

Never ceases to amaze me how much period hardware they were able to put into "A Bridge Too Far", except that they couldn't find any fighter bombers for the close air support sequence...

Hi all,

I know... I know...

But still, it is really not necessary to land on "piano keys" (i.e. the very beginning of the runway)...

It's also not necessary to stand in the undershoot. Whether or not it's necessary for a pilot to land on the piano keys is totally irrelevant to the matter IMO. The piano keys are part of the runway and therefore the pilot is totally within his/her rights to touch down there. Let's put it another way, if they were walking around an airport would you let them stand that close to an aircraft starting it's engines?

The bigger issue is people thinking that they can just stand wherever they like, usually with some shouting about paying taxes or similar. They used to do the same at Brize until the RAF coppers got sent to move them on. It's idiocy, I've seen what damage an idling jet engine can do, even a relatively low powered VC-10 engine. Aeroplanes are dangerous, engines especially so.

If they are stupid enough to stand there when a Typhoon is landing then they'll do the same when something big comes in. And in that case someone could/will be seriously hurt. Without reheat a Typhoon produces (iirc) about 34,000 lbs of thrust. A single Tristar engine produces 50,000 lbs or a C-17 engine 40,000 lbs. You've seen the video of what the Typhoon did, so imagine something with almost 10 times as much power.

Look for videos of Princess Juliana airport on Sint Maarten. Because that is where the situation will finish up, and then someone gets blown across the road and breaks limbs or gets killed. Or worse, causes enough of a distraction that it causes a crash.

It all comes under the umbrella of Flight Safety. Perhaps I have a different perspective to most people having been so involved with aircraft, no doubt Steve will have an aircrew type perspective on it as well. But for now at least... Rant over.

I think we misunderstood Martin!

I don't approve of people being there at all!

But I also think that landing 40 million Euro worth warplane at the strict beginning of the runway (i.e. on "Piano keys") is really not necessary... why not aiming 100+ meters up the runway - it is so much safer and the runway is long enough...

True, but they were able to disguise some German light vehicles, as well as the PAK 40s...

No worries, in that case I'm sorry if my post felt like I was aiming an attack at you.

As far as I'm concerned (from a non-pilot perspective) it's no problem, the plane is down safely with no damage. Would there be any issue if the plane had landed on the piano keys if the runway was 100m further away from the fence? It might not be necessary, but it's down safely. If nothing else, it builds confidence in the pilot that he can land on a short runway if needed.
If we're honest about it, the whole concept of an airshow is totally unnecessary, but it's an excuse to show off as pilots do.

Well to speed things along in my game against the AI, I let the computer play both sides into May 42. Somehow the AI managed to lose three US CVs off the coast of Saipan in Apr 42. I smell a conspiracy.

In other interesting events...imagine my surprise when I scrolled across the map to find sushi being served at Perth rather than shrimp on the Barbie. Japan occupies the entire western coast of Australia.

Spent the last week of the game cleaning up the mess the AI made of my units and supplies....it's like turning over the command of your logistics to a 4 year old.

I didn't realize the AI was coded to occupy Australia?
