You are giving the Japanese a far to big Pearl Harbor to do. Never put more than 3 CV's in that port, since you can't extract all CV's to prevent them from being port attacked in the surprise impulse...

Agree with your SOP of not having more than 3 CV's in Pearl Harbor. Maybe warspite1 has a sneaky plan to bait the Japanese into DoW. Seems possible.

I'm waiting to see the renamed Fighter plane, Rafe McCawley, show up at Pearl Harbor. Then all will be well.

Guys just relax will you? Do not worry, when World War II breaks out, Rafe will see us right. Don't forget he is:

"Not anxious to die sir, just anxious to matter".

As he barks his macho orders:

"Danny get me to a goddamn plane!"

"Danny, Lets play some chicken with these Jap suckers."

I take the advice handed out previously and remove the US carriers from Pearl...

The CW launch a Strategic Bombing attack on Nuremberg - costing the Germans one point.

The decent Soviet position in the south is now somewhat less secure thanks to that river busting attack. The plan is to form a line Berdiansk-Gomel and see if they can hold that, while at the same time making the Crimea difficult to take.

The turn continues....

There will be three attacks:

1. The attack on the Partisan in Paris
2. The attack on the 6th Guards Infantry Army in Berdiansk
3. The attack on Kunnming

Yamamoto attempts HQ support, while the Germans need to bring a bomber to the party to stop the Russians from lowering the odds. The Russians bring bombers and a fighter in anyway....

The odds are 6.4:5.0 to the Germans

Round 1

15 (DA) Germany must abort a fighter or bomber. The bomber goes.
11! (DC) The Soviets get to choose a bomber to clear through.

The Soviets need one more bomber so stick around

Round 2

13 (No Effect)
10 (DC) The Soviets get their second bomber through!

The Chinese attack is done first. Its a 3:1 no modifier on the Assault table...

....10! The Chinese defenders of Kunming are destroyed for no loss.

The Back door into Burma is now wide open....

At Berdiansk the odds are reduced to 2:1 +1 on the Blitzkrieg table - will that reduction by one column be vital??...

....NO!! its another 10(11) - the Soviet Army is destroyed and a breakthrough is possible.

The Germans play safe and do not occupy Stalino this impulse....

From experience, I know that it is wrong for the USSR to hold Berdiansk as part of its front line. When it falls - and it will fall - the Soviet position is much harder to hold. Getting units into the hex east of Berdiansk then becomes difficult and the frontline has just gotten another hex longer.

I prefer to hold Stalino with the two hexes south of it empty. The Germans have to enter the western-most hex and then wait another impulse to enter the next one. Correct play by the Germans would then be to attack the hex between Dnepropetrovsk and Stalino. The USSR rails units into Stalino, Rostov, and Kharkov. The rest of the USSR line stumbles backward to the Donets and Don.

---

In your game I would have advanced into Stalino as the Germans. That would have given the USSR fits trying to find a unit to occupy the hex between Stalino and Rostov.

As in many tactical games the attacker has to locate the weak point and then roll up the rest of the line. When it is held, Berdiansk is the weak point almost all the time.

Given what happened earlier in the turn through being too greedy, I was not going to make the same mistake again! Would the Soviets be able to put my units out of supply had I done so? Possibly. But not worth the risk.

The Allies take a chance and pass with all except the Soviets. This still gives a good chance of the turn ending. The Soviets cannot move in the Baltic and they have few units in the centre. With the Dneiper breached, its time to fall back toward the Don and trading space for time....

Now, will the turn end???

The turn must be coming to an end - do the Italians take a chance?...Yes, why not.

Fliegerkorps X and their Italian buddies fly to the Western Med in search of convoys. The CW respond but fly to the 2 box instead of the 0 box ....

It doesn't matter because there was some real quality naval search dice rolls - a 9 and a 10 for the Axis and Allies respectively.. Wow! that sucked

The turn continues. The Soviets are the only Allied power to take an action this turn. This gives an 80% chance of the turn ending still.

And on a 2, finally it does....

The Axis win the Initiative on a re-roll, but the weather is not great - a mix of Rain (Arctic, Nth Temperate and Nth Monsoon) and Fine (elsewhere).

I see that USSR has at last begun to build militia but still no garrisons. My humble opinion is that USSR should have all their militia and garrisons as soon as possible after USSR is at war with Germany. They certainly should take priority over all those expensive armoured units.

With that said I suspect that there are some that disagree with me.

The Germans may have the Initiative but its not all plain sailing in the East. The weather has not helped, combined with the fact that many of their HQ's need to play catch-up.

There will be no ground strikes this impulse as the need for getting aircraft to the front takes precedence.

There are two attacks in the Soviet Union this impulse, one in Latvia and the other in the Ukraine. Vatutin seeks to provide HQ Support for the southern battle, while the Germans bring in bombers and two fighters to try and increase the odds. The Soviets decide to fight it with whatever they can. They will be at a disadvantage but all they need is to abort one of the German bombers OR get one of their own through and they stop the odds from changing.

The odds are 6.4:5.5 in favour of the Axis.

Round 1

11 (DC) - A German bomber is cleared through (German choice and they go for the Stuka).
15 (AA) - Attacker aborts. German choice of front fighter or bomber and they choose the fighter.

The odds increase further but on the basis they need to get lucky just once, the Soviets stick at it...

Round 2

12 (DC) - Oohh and the second German bomber gets cleared through.
12 (AC) - But the German clears the Soviet through too....

Meanwhile, in Latvia the Germans are hoping for something more routine - its a 7:1 -1 Blitzkrieg...

...its an automatic victory and the Soviet cavalry and motorised division are destroyed.

The Germans cannot advance into the vacated hex as they would be out of supply however..

The turn skips forward 2.

The Germans make a couple of mistakes. They leave the 10th Infantry Corps, guarding the neck of the Crimea, out of supply. If the Soviets can ground strike it, then his value will be just 1. There are two German fighters that can intercept - but making the Germans use up their fighters on this side show seems like a good idea....

The Hungarians make the same mistake southwest of Gomel - and the Germans have no fighters this time.

The Germans use one fighter to contest the southern air battle.

Round 1

13 (No Effect)
7 (DA) The German fighter is aborted....
