I am playing the second mission. The enemy AI archers have an attack range of 8. They are shooting at my guys that are 10-12 hexes away. What gives?

Normal terrain distance for archers is 8 hexes. Could it be that those archers are sitting up in castle towers which may give them a distance advantage?

I haven't read the manual yet, so I'm just guessing.)

Like Franchot surmises, those archers in that mission start off on what's considered a wall, giving them +1 to Accuracy, +1 Evasion, and +2 to Range on their bows. So, in theory they can still harass you at 10 spaces and make pincushions of your necromancers.

Ah yes, the old height bonus. Thank you Franchot and Southpaw! I checked the manual about ranged shooting, but I did not check the terrain section. It is right there under Wall.
