Sorry guys could someone give a high level summary of what is going on (rationale) for the German declarations of war against Hungary and Bulgaria please?

Has Admiral Horthy wee'd in Hitler's cheerios or what?

Many thanks

This is one of several gambits to do with the Russian demand on Bessarabia being accepted. Once that happens, Hungary and Bulgaria demand Rumanian territory too. If those demands are refused - which they were - then Bulgaria can be aligned to Russia, hence Germany must strike first.

This alternative normally sees Hungary and Bulgaria sacrificed to get Rumania as a much stronger ally (all her units can leave the home country). Also later on, the Axis has a much easier task to get Yugoslavia aligned to them.

Edit: And it means the Germans can be much stronger in the south when/if Barb begins.

Okay - thanks. In terms of US Entry is this action generally +/- ive for Germany when compared to an "historical" agreement to cede Bessarabia to the USSR and part of Transylvania and South Dobruja to Romania's neighbours?

If my gearing limits had allowed it, I would have taken the chance to try and rebuild the Bulgaria MIL. That outcome was hilarious when it happened.

Theoretically neutral as DoW or alignment of both is the same odds. Slightly negative if done in 1939 because any chits generated are more likely to be of higher value, but then there might not be any. (About a 50-50 to generate one chit.)

Due to various real life issues we have not posted additions to this AAR for some time. Nonetheless the game has proceeded and is now at JA40, second impulse. My compatriots may add some posts here but until we catch up, things may not quite stay in chronological order.

Quick summary: In MA40 and MJ40 the Axis was lucky in Initiative but unlucky with weather. Finally in MA40, impulse 7, Germany could no longer wait and attacked Belgium in the rain. In MJ40 the first axis impulse had fine weather and things looked rosy as the Germans launched a massive air offensive. But then -- rain and more rain. At last the skies cleared and the Germans were able to breakthrough around Sedan and press to the southwest, but then the turn ended.

Meanwhile in China, Japan continued in her offensives in the center and north and even advanced in the south during the last impulse of MJ, when a pause in the early monsoon occurred.

Like I said not necessarily chronologically presented...

Prior to the assaults above, the Stukas softened up Antwerp.

When the weather cleared for the last impulse of MA40, Italy announced their entry into the war with an overflight of the port of Marseilles that dropped more than propaganda leaflets.

And in China after the destruction of the Nationalist defenders of Cheng Chow, the Japanese obliterated a Chinese Communist formation standing between them and Sian.

On their impulse, before ending the turn, the BEF conducted a surprise attack on the Germans in Belgium, but the results were anticlimactic.

Situation in Europe end of turn MA40. Belgium and Bulgaria were conquered by Germany. Note the build up of Axis forces on the northern border of Greece.

MJ40 dawned bright and beautiful and once again defying the odds, the Axis won the initiative. Anticipating a long turn with continued good weather, Germany decided to soften up the French defenses by calling an air action.

Italy DoW'd Greece (aligned to CW) and joint operations with German units moving south from Bulgaria were scheduled, although emphasis on German air activities held the spotlight for Impulse 1. Taking advantage of the Surprise impulse, Italian bombers struck the ill-prepared Greek army.

Japan took a Land and started with a ground strike in China that did not go well due to a tenacious defense by the Nationalist Air Force that resulted in Japan chickening out after one round of air-to-air combat.

The best Stuka was aborted in air-to-air combat with the French, but despite being unbothered, the remaining Stukas performed less well than expected. Here's all the axis ground strike results:

Shockingly the next four impulses were rain in the Temperate and storm in the North Monsoon. Axis rolled a '2' for impulse 3 and and a '1' (modified to a '2') for Impulse 7.

Here's a shot of the situation in China after land movement in Impulse 7 - as the Japanese slogged forward.

Note however, Japan was able to run an Infantry Division around the northern end of the Commie lines and capture another city, leaving Mao in consternation as to how to counter.

Also in MJ40, the Russian hammer finally fell upon Persia and a less than stellar defensive plan resulted in Teheran falling to a Russian cavalry division with very few other Russian land moves being needed - leaving the remainder for the Communist Chinese to use.

Miracle of miracles! the Allies failed to end the turn after impulse 9 (impulse marker moving 2 since Impulse #3). Fine weather returned and allowed the Axis to make several attacks.

A counterattack on Teheran by the Persian cavalry corps failed miserably.

The Germans broke through the French defenses north and west of Strasbourg and advanced to the southwest, cutting off the static troops manning the Maginot Line. Below is a shot of the defenders being softened up.

The Japanese attacked Chiang and an Infantry corps and destroyed them both with a nicely timed high roll.
