I tend to use the pre-war American CAs as CV escorts and allow just my modern CLs and CAs to take on the Japanese CAs.

How many Clevelands, Brooklyns, and Helana Class CLs do you have in the Pacific??

All of them so far. I use the CAs on bombardment runs as the 8inch do make a difference I find in that role. I have some CA in CV escort roles too, but these are here to hit bases.

Check to TOE of the 39th before flying them out. I think it might be that one that upgrades to a really crappy TOE later on. Basically they convert to a Brigade sized Division with just 109 squads and some mortars. If that is the case you might as well get rid of them at Paoshan.

I did check that and I don't want to unit to upgrade to that less than ideal division. I'll slowly pull them from Paoshan not because I have other plans for them but because the defense should be more effective with a more modernized, better quality set of units.

The Burmese rifle squads are 5/13. The Indian 43 squads are 75/20.

SUBS: Permit, racing toward the KB sighting, heads through dangerous waters and nails a mine at Banjowengi. It should make it home to Perth, slowly, with 23/74/8 damage.

The I-16 gets a good sighting of the Port Moresby invasion. Damn. I'll try to misdirect by having them head toward Cent Pac.

INDIA: Silchar continues to be bombarded, and two more divisions are two days away.

CENT PAC: A good bombardment of Mili by the two CA and DDs.

SW PAC: Combat engineers and an HQ load for he Port Moresby operation. Tanks are alsready at Milne Bay and will get on LSTs soon.

CHINA: The strikes in deep China actually fly after long transfers to Chungking and Wenchow. In spite of the bombardment hitting like clockwork, the B-25D1 groups sortie and one port strike hits several ships, but only sinks one ACM. The low naval strikes find the bombardment TF but can't put a hit on them. The 50cal do punch through the hull of the CL though, which is interesting. I like how they attack multiple times to strafe and then bomb. These guys get one AMc for their trouble but the combat ships are spared. Now I'll get some more truing fro them. All groups immediately fly out but here are still some damaged B-25s at Wenchow.

The Japanese attack southeast of Chungking. We hold easily and both sides take about 150 infantry squads disabled, plus we get about 45 vehicles as well. Now I'll switch out units of something more robust!

OZ: Just quietly building away in the West, wiring and get ready for the next steps.

Oh boy, that is a slap in the face from Wenchow! In Downfall, I have used the for low naval night strikes for great effect, they will stop Japanese ship movement against your bases...

SUBS: The I-5 hits APA Sheridan which hasn't sunk yet but is in trouble. The sub may be a goner with 11 hits and heavy damage in the report.

INDIA: The monsoon begins. Hopefully this will impact his ability to supply the NE India front.

CENT PAC: Mili takes a beating from the air with USN 4Es hitting the fields and B-25s hitting the troops. Our guys have recovered significant'y but still have a ways to go before another attack.

CHINA: Nick goes all-in for Paoshan. He doesn't close the base, but puts enough damage on it that I'm going to bug out with all air groups and see if there is a way to come back later. His fighters pay a pretty steep price again, but he had to do it and it was a good strategic move. I'll now suffer from low supply and he'l be able to wear down the troops in the base. On the day I counted 520+ fighters involved (had to tell exactly because of LR CAP) and about 120 bombers hitting the field.

That meant there were a lot of planes in Mandalay and Lashio, the only built up bases nearby. I sent night bombing Libs to Mandalay and only 22 actually made it, but they destroyed 12-14 planes on the ground. Air losses for the day are below.

The Japanese attacked on the ground as well and got another 1:2, but lowered forts to 1 (EDIT: the correct CR from Nick now).

I'll leave about 40 good airframes in Paoshan but get the pilots out except for a few that might fly planes that are repaired. I'll also hit Myitkyina with a B-24 strike preceded by a P-38 sweep. I want to catch bleeding CAP and destroy his most useful airbase near Ledo while I've got the chance. I'll put B-17s on Ledo and also hit Imphal. He has 170 fighters at Dimpaur, but none at any other base in the area right now.

SUBS: Lots of subs missing decent targets.

INDIA: The bombing directives worked perfectly, with the P-38 sweep drawing LR CAP and downing about 17-20 fighters who were coming in small drabs and had no radar at the base. Then the Libs came in and nailed Myitkyina with over 150 divets on the field. That should be closed now. Imphal was also hit for light damage with no resistance. The B-17s were rained out for Ledo.

There are about 120 fighters (according to recon) now at Dimapur. That is the target tomorrow with all B-17s and B-24s. Corsairs, Hellcats and P-38s (which took no losses in today's sweep) will swarm the base first (hopefully) with some LR CAP from Darjeeling.

CENT PAC: Another good hit on Mili.

SW PAC: All is go for PM. A BB or CA TF is nearing Merauke. I'll keep and eye on it, and if it gets close may wait a few days and throw some air strikes that way.

CHINA: Bombing at Paoshan indeed closed the base emphatically today. It is now at 85/82 damage. Interestingly some fighters that could only have come from here were lost in the air during the turn, and I think it may have been in a scrap with the LR CAP that didn't make it into the reports. Hopefully they scored too.

I was able to fly out a few more repaired planes, two Hellcats and a Corsair. About 18 Hellcats are left and I ate the loss of 4 Kittyhawk III and had to disband the 12 pane group. It'll be back in 60 days. Again we come out ahead in the tally with the night bombing and sweeps. I feel a bit bad about the night bombing, but this is the rule we agreed to and way less than 50 bombers hit the base. I'm sure if flak was better and the base not so stuffed with airframes this would be a pinprick, but getting 15-20 planes from 28 bombers at night is a staggering result. (I think night bombing is still too good, but that we have to allow it. Mostly for the benefit of the Japanese side, especially late, when hitting bases in the day will be very painful. Night attacks were used effectively late int eh war and that should be an option, and if it's me later with my base stacked with B-29s, I'll remember this and agree that all is fair).

I can see how one would think so. It would take a similar kind of effort that some other bases in x3 would take, and in the grand scheme, as long as it's subdued by some frequent attention, it should be no more than a pinprick if I use it. Supply shortages mean any bombing from here would be at half load and I can't get to the HI either with the yellow flag flying. So it provided a nice surprise, but nothing major.

Nick is very focused on the mountains and it's a long way to transfer the 3-4 divisions it might take to get this base. Is it more important than getting troops to the Marianas and Java and the Kuriles?

I don't see it as high on his lists, but again I'm not complaining that I've still got it.

OMG!!!

Why go away from beast mode on the half yard line in the last minute of the Super Bowl?!?!?!

Because, they know that you know that they know that you know that they will go with beast mode. And you will certainly have your best counter action slamming into them. So they outsmart you. Hah!

The planets have realigned and all is right in the universe once again. Regardless of the play call, it was a game for the ages and forgotten in the furor is the fact that a rookie made the play of his career that sealed the win for his team when it was on the line.

On this we'll have to disagree. There is nothing okay about the coaching decision to not run Marshawn Lynch (or anyone else) from the 1 yard line on second down with 30 seconds left in the Superbowl.

The only thing good about this situation were Lynch's comment after the game.

Marshawn Lynch asked if he's surprised he didn't get the football. Says "No." I ask him, Why not? Says, "Because football is a team sport."

If they ran and got stacked up and fumbled in the low-down semi-brawl at the 3/4 yard line, millions of people would be criticizing them for being too predictable. I don't fault the call.

They might fault the running play, but not the call to run the ball. There is no way to fault that call.

Oh, believe me, plenty of people would.

Me, I'm rather disappointed with the (lack of) wardrobe malfunction situation in the half-time show!

I'm with you. They had a timeout to burn, too. Even if you know that they know that you know that they know.... you still have to try it. Maybe not with Lynch, but a running play of some kind. You only need 1 yard... basically, you've got 2 chances at it (if not 3, if you're quick or throw it incomplete) and not running it when you've got a timeout to stop the clock if you fail is a little boneheaded.

That said, the pass still almost worked - Wilson basically threw it about 12 inches too far in front of his receiver. If the throw had been on (and nobody throws it spot on 100% of the time), that might've been a TD.

Actually I think Wilson's throw was pretty good. Butler just had such a head of steam going that he basically slammed the receiver out of the way to get the ball.

It was good enough if Butler hadn't been there to intercept, yeah. The receiver would have caught it, but with his arms fully extended in front of him. Risky spot to catch the ball.

Lockette also looked like he was coasting past, not moving with speed and force to push across the line. Just gliding, which is why Butler knocked him down so hard. If that's Edelman; touchdown.

Friends and I were talking about receivers. That must have been the least accomplished group of receivers across both teams in the history of the Superbowl. Seattle screwed themselves letting Tate go. Edelman is a rising star, but the others are all journeymen who might not even play on some teams, let alone start.

Most of what Katy Perry wore looked like a malfunction. How about that bag/jersey during the Missy set, (which was an awesome throwback moment).

I have to say though there is something about her voice that gets me, the only one of the pop divas that I think is making actually decent music. For cheesy pop, that is.

May 18 - 19, 1943

SUBS: Peto gets crushed in the shallows, but with only 50 float damage should get to Perth. Trusty hits an E and sinks her in a big AO TF. Nice, but nicer would have been an oiler.

INDIA: Big 4E strikes at Dimapur finally fly and hit a lot of A6M variants not the ground. Looks like these may be casualties from the Paoshan battles not yet repaired. That battle keeps on giving! Unfortunately on the 19th no strikes fly to get the dozen reported still in base.

Tried a DA at Silchar but even with a massive advantage in numbers and (supposed) quality we can't make a dent in the single Japanese division here. Really disappointing to get a 1:7 with greater casualties on our side. Forts are only at 3 here and don't get lowered either. Huh.

CENT PAC: Bombing at Mili is really starting to have some effect. No flak now and lots of infantry squads disabled. Once they start being destroyed I'll hopefully be ready for another attack.

SW PAC: The PM invasion gets to a day away when I notice an apparent CV TF to the West in the Arafura Sea. I pull it all back into the shadows and change tack. I sent CLs into Horn Island to bombard, then bombed with 4Es in case he made a big run to get to PM so there would be no LBA support. Then I stacked 100 DBs and 120 escorts into a now level 6 Portland Roads. Subs and PTs filled the gaps around Horn Is. Lots of search went to nearby bases and everything else in the area went turlte.

The IJN stayed back but a SCTF did move into the Carpenteria, just not into range. So we could have landed easily. Now I'll have to try to sneak back in. I'll give it a day or two, and hopefully the shift in focus makes him think Horn was the real target.

CHINA: The troops at Paoshan hold well again, getting a 1:2 with about even losses.

Near Chungking our small army also does well, the AT guns seemingly having some effect with 50+ vehicles disabled.

Here is the scene after the 18th when I decided to switch to focus on Horn. I had hoped he'd come light and we'd get a shot, but we both waited this turn, so we'll see how the next days play out. I'll keep trying to change up looks to get him questioning the real target.

Air Losses

I know airframes are not the choke point for the Japanese, but it still can't be good for them to lose these kinds of numbers on a regular basis.

Horn Island - You may have cut off part of the Combat Report, but did your CLs have night time recon set for the base?? Usually that shows up near the top of that part of CR.

Normanton to Mornington Island to Groote Eylandt - I moved some APDs (4 to 6) by Horn to Normanton and then used supplies to purchase barges to move forward. Even the short endurance ones can move fuel to Mornington to allow further advances. It may just be a side show, but it allows you to progress.

I have twice those losses, Japan can easily absorb those. The problem might be with pilot losses.

You have to look at the long view. To replace an air frame cost supply. Something that is not infinite for Japan. GJ has spent a lot of resources fighting in China and India. It is hard to say how this will affect him come 1/45 but I know in my completed campaign, my opponent gave up in 8/45 because he had nothing left. I don't think enough Allied players play the game with the long term in view. Japanese players too for that matter.
