Absolutely agree. That surface TF is way too large. In a night action, it is likely that half of those ships will not even fire a shot. Don't understand why big TFs like that are used. Never have and never will. Only time it can be effective is when it does a bombardment but at the risk of getting caught by surface forces why not break it into two TFs?

Well, the big thing you don't mention is that the Allied bombers can fly thru a wall of flak and still make hits. The Helens, not so much.

Nice map earlier!

In DBB I find the 4Es get to target pretty well but the 2E not so much in the face of decent flak. I just watched a turn where about 100-120 Allied 2E got exactly one disabled squad in a ground strike with very heavy flak at the base. The weather was also bad, but the 4E flying to the same base from the same altitude were able to get good hits on the fields.

It's tough for the Japanese bombers later in the game for sure, but still possible to get to the Allied bases if they let their guard down and weather cooperates.

The reason for posting this for myself was just to get some idea of equivalents, not just between sides but in my own forces to understand what effect each type really might have on the target.

Well, it is a good exercise from a weight of metal standpoint but my experience shows that superior Allied flak will lessen the effect of any comparable Japanese attack. You will have more damaged bombers and I don't think I have ever seen a damaged DB or Torpedo bomber hit a ship. Don't know the effect of level bombers but one has to suspect better flak means more misses. I am just amazed at the effect of Allied flak with the changes in Da Babes. To the point where I don't bother capping some large bases but load them up with flak and let the flak shoot down bombers. Saves the fighter pool that way. Funny, but in stock I did not even bother buying American flak units out from the West Coast. (they were not worth it) However, in Da Babes I have bought every one that I could afford. I sent a bunch of flak units from the East Coast to India and I have to admit their impact on the fight there has been dramatic.

I used to say you could not send enough engineers to India. Now I say you cannot send enough engineers and flak to india...

ALL of my large flak units are here and a number of the US ones. I agree completely. Nick knows this though so he rarely tests them out. If he sees its of guns listed in the flyovers from recon and also loses recon planes, he seems to just not even think about hitting that base.

It's more true to the era for sure. My problem is that the Japanese flak is also better , and Nick really knows how to use it and maximize it's effect. I can go in at 15k+ and still lose 5-10 bombers from 100 with a bunch more damaged.

May 30 - 31, 1943

SUBS: It's been a rough few days for subs as ASW air patrols have put a number of USN fleet subs in jeopardy. The Tambor comes through with a hit on a troop convoy though, which is pleasant.

INDIA: Tanks arrive in Jorhat just as the Japanese pull out. Looks like he'll be overstacking a bit on the way back up through the mountains, and that means he's be disrupted, so it's a good time to pursue. It'll also mean it'll be tough to keep these units in supply at all for the next few months, so I'll try and pour it on by continued bombing of Dimapur and then of Imphal and Kohima once he moves up there.

CENT PAC: A quick and dirty invasion of Jaluit gets the base on the first try. Not much there so this one was easy. Next I'll try Majuro before the tougher bases of Maleolap and Wotje. I also have troops prepped for Alinglaplap and that's on the menu soon too, now that I can support the area better with LR CAP.

SW PAC/SO PAC: Near Horn Island in the night our PT patrol ran into 4 older IJN DDs. The visibility was only 1k yards so the PTs got in close and ended up sinking one DD with a single torpedo hit!

PT-242 that got the hit was sunk moments later with three hits from the Akikaze. Guess they got in a bit close.

CHINA: Still shifting around units SE of Chungking. Still have a big numbers advantage over the Japanese. He has tanks.

Beginning to pull some small buyable Chinese Corps pieces that have come back through the zombie system. They're heading to India to rebuild and get them out of Chungking where they just get in the way.

SIGINT: Not sure which TF the Tambor hit, but most likely it was one of these.

This portion of the KB has been hanging around the Arafura for a while. I'm thinking now this isn't a deterrent so much as a protective force. It's certainly discouraging me from moves into the Gulf of Carpentaria.

It could also be protecting either a reinforcement or removal of troops from Horn or Merauke. I don't think he's pulling out, so I'd think adding more. No sign from SIGINT though either way.

As shown here I've gotten subs right under the TFs for days, and shooting at the DDs, but can't get through the screens to the CV/BBs. I've lost two subs this week for my trouble. Looks like we've found his current lines in the sand though.

Air losses are not bad either day but things could have been better. It would have been really good if I hadn't taken a risk sending the USN 4Es to Roi-Namur to support the Jaluit landings. I didn't need them as he didn't fly strikes, and they met a group of A6M8 there. That didn't turn out well.

I also thought about suspending sweeps against Torokina after the first day, but thought he might just have another few A6M groups there. I didn't expect the Georges, but it is actually good to see how we fared. Most losses came from the VRF group, but the Wasp boys did just fine, getting slightly better than 1:1. The P-38s though don't like the George, not this fast one in DBB.

OPERATION BROADSWORD

Here's a look at the plan for the rest of the Marshalls after Jaluit is taken. With search extended here it seems we have a bit more free reign to move and there have been no sorties from the 80+ bombers at Roi Namur since the Mili invasion.

This is nothing too complicated. Just a direct push up the chain with a few little stabs at distant atolls for extended search use. Obviously these lines are not accurate ship paths, but just indicators of the order I'll move in. The timeline here is completely fluid. I look more at these dates as the latest I'd like to be there. It might all happen sooner as the troops have been ready for a while. I just need to get the prep higher for the combat engineers for Maleolap and Wotje before moving there.

Once the Marshalls are secured Kusaie is out on a limb. It's a definite fortress, but he may evacuate some of that before we get there if this all goes as planned. Kusaie at that point will be taken to secure the flank and keep the search at a distance.

I showed the Wasp here a week ago and that seemed to immediately send his cruisers back toward Truk. Wasp is now in port and one CVE is leading the push to Majuro which will land in a few days.

Chungking just went into the red with new units eating 300+ supply every time they arrive. I really need the supply from India to start now, but it'll be a good few days before anything substantial gets here. Ledo is building and I also still have to fly out some troops to lessen crowding in Chungking.

I think I can hold for a good while SE of Chungking as this is one spot where I have endless troops to throw in. I just have to get the supply up, which should happen if the fields stay open. Currently 125 P-40K and 36 Hellcats are flying a 60% Cap at 25k over the base daily.

Isn't it long range for a C47 to fly to Chungking? Does that effect cargo load? I know it is going to be expensive in OP losses.

You can fly them on transport missions out to half maximum range - which is 15.

You can only para drop to enemy bases within normal range, but supply transport or troop transport between AFs will work out to half range. Try it!

Exactly. So also I'll run some bombers for a while from Dimapur and Jorhat. it's going to be a bit expensive in all airframes, but less than losing Chungking. I also run the C-47s at 30-40% rest and that's keeping pilot fatigue below 20 so far and airframe fatigue to a lower range.

I can also pick up troops from this distance and that is definitely helping the situation.

Keep in mind that OPS losses on the C47 won´t allow you to keep it up for long. For some reason the C47s in the game seem to have been built out of paper and tape.

I lost more C47s to OPS in our game then any other model (1000+ lost to OPS) and that was mostly flying from level 9 AFs in India to level 9 AFs in Burma....

I remember seeing the numbers grow and grow in our game. Pretty frustrating, and I've already seen a bit of that in limited use. I will have to do it now though, and maybe for a few months at least until either Nick pushes through and closes Chungking or until he decides it's no longer worth it to continue battling there.

If the base stays open and the defenders have supply, Chungking could be a real bastion and could keep some pressure on the Japanese on this front. His use of supply and HI for men and machines should counter balance my losses in ops in the larger strategic sense. I have decent pools so far and some C-46 are starting to arrive too, which will really ease the load.

June 1 - 3, 1943

SUBS: The Amberjack hits an AK near Merauke, but empty. The Haddo gets in close to a big SCTF but can't break through the DD screen yet again.

INDIA: Tried a big set of strikes at Dimapur to little effect. Still lost a good number of planes at 15k. The Japanese do pull out.

CENT PAC: The Majuro invasion will land on the 4th. I'm going in pretty light here, but there have been no supply shipments in a while and these troops have also been bombed periodically for a while. Fingers crossed.

SO PAC: The IJN continues to post big TFs at Torokina and 200+ fighters there. I've been reassembling my surface naval forces and getting better DDs and force compositions, making smaller 8-9 ship TFs with sister ships in them and as many Fletchers as I can scare up.

CHINA: The troops in 76,46 SE of Chungking hold twice in three days, inflicting roughly even casualties on the Japanese. All of them have supply, and this is the crucial difference allowing a long stand here. I'll have to keep rotating them out, but should be able to keep some well supplied troops here.

His troops are in range of some of my 2E bombers, but the effect in x2 with them dug in would likely be minimal. If I can get Chungking supplied up I'd love to station some 30 or so bombers here, or maybe FBs to hit low, but his embedded AA in tank divisions is pretty good, so that might be a bad idea.

SIGINT: Aha!!! Finally got a note that confirms this is a reinforcement of Merauke. Nice.

Interesting then to note the many messages about Sarmi regarding the 14th division. I guess this must be some deception, and it's cool to be able to put the pieces together. The absolute proof is of course the Ueizuru Maru, first destined for Sarmi then later to Merauke!

2/14th Division is loaded on xAK Ueizuru Maru moving to Merauke. --- SIG INT REPORT FOR June 1, 43
26/14th Division is loaded on xAK Kashiwara Maru moving to Merauke.

21/14th Division is loaded on a Std-B Cargo class xAK moving to Merauke.
25/14th Division is loaded on xAK Kinjosan Maru moving to Sarmi. --- SIG INT REPORT FOR June 2, 43

Merauke is pretty far from other Japanese bases. You can fly most of a division out, but I'm not really planning to go this route anyway. I'd like to use places that haven't been beefed up to this level.

First and foremost - Great Match so far; I've been silently watching from the sidebar. I have not been reading your opponents AAR as I wish to see things from one-side only and make my inferences!

A few questions and observations:
1) Where do you think his line in the sand resides with regard to the Central Pacific? Your rapid procurement of the Gilberts and progress in the Marshalls would be alarming to me (if I were your opponent) given that your quite a bit ahead of history in the region. You have not lost your carriers and will soon start having the Essex class arrive making even a toehold in an island group an issue for the Japanese to hold on to the rest.

2) Observation is that he looks like he's making a fortress wall with Merauke and Horn island - I suspect you'll meet the KB here should you seek to confront him with a landing at either place. I see a perimeter defense with the northern part of Australia. Nice plan in that he seeks to delay the DEI invasion that most Allied players pursue.

3) Observation based on #2 - Your going to have to start nailing his Navy as I see the ultimate big conflict either occurring in the CentPac OR Philippines. I base this thought on my suspicions that the main Allied thrust will follow history.

Excellent strategy with picking off isolated bases and making mutual air base support. I hope to see you pick up an RHS game one of these days. It would be interesting to see how you fare with their China fixes.

EDITS: Clarity! I will also throw up a thought about Operation Cartwheel. Its starting to look a bit grim for the defenders of Rabaul with the Allies drawing up and around. I just started reading the first part of Gamble's Rabaul trilogy. Interesting read regarding Lark force - tragic end for most of those guys.

Egads! Think of the fuel he is burning at Merauke!

What is that crafty dog up to?

I am off to read his AAR to find out!

Thanks for the comments!

When he went for India I was pretty nervous and made some silly mistakes based on inexperience. Since I think I've settled and tried to take advantage where I could. Once the summer rolls by I should reach the end of the easy territory and begin to bounce off the defenses all over the map. he's in relatively good shape with the navy, and Nick knows how to pack a punch when he needs to. I'm very wary of letting him get any kind of a consistent read on my movements or tendencies.

The line is from Ponape to Truk to Rabaul and Umboi in the Pacific, although his Marianas defenses are coming together already too. It continues from Horn to Merauke and across to Darwin all of the way to Exmouth. He'll fight for any of those locations.

In the IO it includes the Andamans and Nicobars and of course Burma.

There are always ways around the set defense. I know from playing Japan that defense is thin where it's not seen. You try to make it known you're getting a tough perimeter set up and hide what's not yet ready behind. SIGINT tells me a lot though and I have some good ideas where the holes are.

June 4 - 6, 1943

SUBS: I hate the 'elects not to fire' bit when a sub encounters small shipping. In this case the Grayling near Hokkaido deciding a few small yard oilers moving between islands weren't worthy.

Seahorse does get a TK in the DEI. The Pogy sends a few fish at a DD in a nice cruiser TF that includes the slow Mizuho.

INDIA: Kohima is abandoned and Allied troops occupy the base. We'll march to Imphal and attack regardless of numbers to make sure the overstacked Japanese run very low on supply for their walk through the jungles.

Flights from Ledo, Jorhat and Dimapur are all involved in supplying a struggling and besieged Chungking now.

CHINA: SE of Chungking the Japanese attack and have another tough go against the dug in Chinese. I'm nearly able now to get under the 160k troop limits with 7k to spare for incoming zombie Corps. It'll be about 3-4 more days before enough free troops are flown out and unfortunately in the meantime several Corps and other units are arriving. I'll get them out quick but this has to be remedied. I'm looking at non-essential troops here and the construction units, the non-AA base forces and several HQs are moving out too. I have to do it slowly so as not to overstack the 76, 46 hex.

CENT PAC: Majuro falls easily! The embedded BB/CA bombardment was highly effective and thankfully disabled most of the defenders. I only sent some engineers here and I'm amazed they did so well.

Unfortunately I didn't get a LR CAP over some LCIs sneaking up to land a USMC raider unit at Ailinglaplap and a flight of Kates sent most of the boats to the bottom. Luckily two boats remained and I sent them to continue since they were only one hex out. It looked like they picked up a good amount of the swimmers and again, surprisingly, the assault won the base and destroyed the Japanese support troops there!

I'd sent two Fletchers to protect the final run in and the Kates again struck, fought through the fairly strong LR CAP, and hit both DDs. One sank before the turn was out and the other should make it. A number of Kates and escorts were lost though in an afternoon strike, so on the day it's a VP wash.

I'll now be softening up Maleolap while keeping the defenders of Roi Namur honest with an occasional strike there. He's keeping 40-50 fighters there with the 36 strong, (now depleted) Kate group, plus Rufe's at Kawaeijalein. I've now got Hellcats I can send in plus a good number of Wildcats and some old P-40s and P-39s. There are three USN 4E groups and four B-25 groups in the area.

SW PAC/SO PAC: Still facing off in the Solomons, with the navies eyeing each other and feinting occasionally. The real battle is happening slowly at Lae, where our troops are sonly wearing down the defenders and have forts to level 2. Unless he reinforces I think we'll win this soon, what I consider a very major base as it opens the path to Nadzab. That base can go to level 9 and control the entire area, and it should be fair game once Lae is in Allied hands. Buna is inching toward level 9 already, and with the flank secured at PM and Terapo, the stage is set for the major battles to push through Umboi Island into Northern New Guinea.

I had always considered this historical approach boring and slow. I'm really enjoying it now that I'm playing this side and the benefits are easily noticed. There really isn't a need for CVs on this route, at least yet, and the bulk of ops can be small and low cost/risk. I like fighting this way, much more conscious of the VPs and preciousness of airframes and army devices especially, and it just makes a lot of sense. i can keep moving while he has to wonder where my CVs are and where they might strike.

Subs - most have good aggressive leaders without needing to go through them. especially, if the subs are newer Class (Gato and Balbo).

Old, slow BBs - I love my 'floating artillery' to both guard my transports and to cause such high disruption to troops that it makes many invasions very easy.

Marshalls - form a Bombardment TF of Clevelands and Fletchers to hit his Kates base.

It's nice to see you able to make so much progress without having to commit your CVs - while Grey is forced to pretty much use his constantly to act as a deterrent....the wear and tear alone is worth it.

Yep, too many players squander the old BBs in 1942 when they have little to no value and are torpedo meat for Japanese surface TFs. One of the few ships in the Allied inventory that start out as virtually useless and grow to become invaluable. I think it pays just to hold them out and upgrade them to the max. Great AA values, great escorts for CVEs and great counter battery fire for invasion support. These ships do not really hit their stride until 1944.

Yes, and constantly burning up fuel. Which matters in the long run.

All of my sub leaders are changed when they arrive if they're not at least 60 in naval skill and aggression. Maybe I miss one here or there, but this is the policy at least. I do this with all ships that are CV/CVL/CVE/BB/CA/CL/DD as well. As the DE start coming i'll have to check to see how many good commanders that are available for those types. I also usually get a better naval skill of 50+ for AO/TK/APA/LSI/LSD with aggression somewhere in the 50s for the assault ships.

As for bombardments in the Marshalls, I will when I can protect the approaches just a bit bette and once I do some surveys of the minefields there with some DMS ships.

I do!

Traveling in the states. Barely time to do any turns let alone update here. Tomorrow I might have time to get something up.

You should have stayed in London. It's probably warmer there than most places in the states. Here in NE Tennessee we will have a 'heat wave' today as it goes from 0 to high 20s (Fahrenheit).
