Thanks guys. It's been a long road with this one, and it's such an odd duck of a game with the KB dimished immediately. I've gotten to like it though and I'm not looking forward to it ending, especially at this critical juncture.

Naval losses are still heavily in the favor of the Allies, really, except for BB!

Here are the BB losses posted earlier. The IJN has lost 4 CVs and a CVL (three on day 2, the Junyo and CVL near the Andamans when we also lost two BC, but sunk North Carolina and Lexington).

Well, Torsten got right on it after that and sent back a turn!

I have to admit I was doing a bit of bluffing about heading toward Wake to see what I could get out there. I was actually a bit terrified about where I'd put my CVs and realized if he caught me this turn that might just be it.

The night started off well at least!

The KB steams ... NORTH!

I sent her in the only direction I didn't mention, some kind of superstition taking over my thinking.

Still, we end up in range of the BBs, and put a bit more pain on top.

Lotsa hits here. Like 16!

About half are 500kg, but few if any penetrate the thick armor. Still, after yesterday, this ship can't be doing well.

Then the KB manages to hit the Marcus forces, getting some hits on the best Allied assault vessels still left here, plus a number of their escorts. Not sure yet but I think this is the 8 hex strike I was planning just in case the Allied CVs ended up nearby.

Looks like the Allies went toward the Marianas, but not into range of my LBA.

They hit three DDs that strayed too far North somehow. Sucks, as I could've gotten out of this turn without losing much of anything. Oh, well, such is war. It does damage a few, take a few sorties away, and get other planes more fatigued I guess in case there is more action tomorrow.

A second smaller follow-up package also arrived at Marcus and severely damaged more of the APA while landing a couple on the old CL too. With the escorts crushed subs might now be able to really have a field day here!

Here is the situation. The KB ends up 19 hexes from the Allied CVs who are 7 hexes out of Saipan and 11 from Marcus.

I'm a bit pleased with this as it means we have a pretty good shot North to head to safety.

Other than the Jakes hitting the Allied CVs our losses were light on the day.

15 October, 1943

SUBS: The I-2 gets to another US BB, listed as the West Virginia. Hits with 3 TT!

By the rollover I'd say one BB is still afloat near Wake and the subs will converge to try to polish off that work tomorrow. Other subs will head to Marcus to pick off any survivors of today's strikes.

CENT PAC: So, this was about what I was hoping for this turn. I had also hoped he would leave the CVEs to protect the invasion fleet, but no joy there.

Looks like a CL, two DE and about 3 APA, one AKA, two xAP and a few LCI that are sunk or in trouble.

No actually, just got another one back, so hopefully we're on track again. Maybe it was only sudden loss of BB syndrome (SLBBS).

The next was nice and quiet. Almost eerily quiet.

16 October, 1943

SUBS: Strangely the subs in the area of the last B sighting found nothing. Search in this area ask found nothing. Not sure what is going on down there. Either the BBs all went under from the injuries or one actually was less beat up than it seemed. There were sinking sounds at the end of the night phase, but those could easily be from the ships around Marcus as well. I forgot to have a look at the air losses screen since there was no air combat.

I did get this in the ops report:

BB West Virginia determined to have been sunk on or about Oct, 15, 1943

BURMA: The situation here is fairly static, with a fw troops still aiming to flank the blocked position near Taung Gyi, but an IJA division is well dug in a hex beyond now and a few arty and AA units are also on the way. Tanks in Taung Gyi will race over if he does continue and add to the defenses.

Air strikes were meant to hit Ramree but were delayed by weather.

CENT PAC: The Allied CVs move back to within one hex of Marcus and none of our subs get a shot off against the Allied ships there. Hmmmmmm. Strange. I even had some night search going from a Jake group at Marcus, but no luck.

Our CVs are out of range of search now and show no DL, which is nice.

Not sure what the philosophy is on the continued landing of supply/troops at Marcus and forcing a shock attack each turn. If he's trying to kill of the troops in order to rebuild them elsewhere instead of attempt to rescue some of them, then it's working. Today a good number of Allied squads are destroyed and one unit is fully wide out, during the Japanese auto-bombardment no less!

SW PAC: The Aussies don't seem to be doing much on New Guinea, and our bombardment TFs pull back to Hollandia for now. He's moved one fighter group up to Lae, but I sense there isn't much of a push down here, at least not until the CVs are done with Marcus. By then I should have the reinforcements I want on North New Guinea.

ECON: I'm putting together a look at the R n D for the Empire. I'll have it up next.

All remaining Allied ships seem to stay in the Marcus hex and the midgets have no effect there. I recycled the TFs to see if that brings some life into them, but with the Allied search there now I doubt it.

Here is the research as it stands now. It feels like it's going well, but let me know if you guys notice any glaring oversights or overcommitments.

It's not a real game unless you've lost 6+ of them as the Allies.

Are those Sam factories since the beginning?

Why not bounce the other size 30 Frank a factory to R? The A is so close you can practically taste it.

I'll let those go to production. I already bumped the other two to the 'r' a while ago. So now I'll get 85 a month unless I decide to build them further, which I'm sure I will. I's just so hard not to do that in spite of trying to conserve.

I might have started the Sam late, I can't remember now.

Good job Obvert. Heavy system damage and fire is bad news for the battleships. They are probably gone...

I only confirmed three lost by FP lost on ground those turns, but it sure seems like the other one couldn't have disappeared so fast after 16 bomb hits the last day!

He's most likely lost 11-12 BBs now, including all of the R class and the North Carolina.

SUBS: The Apogon takes 4 hits near Miri. Our subs do nothing again, but we lose one midget at Marcus.

The midget driver gets a good report out on the Allied TFs before going down with the boat, and damn Allied damage control anyway! Lots still left afloat here from the strike, but some show heavy damage so may not be long for this world if they attempt an escape. I've also set up a surprise for the next turn.

BURMA: Ramree is bombed, putting a bunch of hits on the base in spite of thunderstorms. No other developments here. usually he has a flurry of action in the air, then nothing for weeks.

This is one of the nothing periods when the pools are replenishing and 4Es getting patched I think. We're managing to do some upgrades though, so no worries. The CAP will be even tougher when he comes back as Tojos convert to the IIc model and a full Jack group is filled out. Oscars will upgrade to the much improved IIIa model soon, and Franks are right around the corner.

CENT PAC: The Allies try a strike against the troops at Marcus again and continue to land (and shock) which destroys another 143 Allied devices. I think I know what he's doing here now. He's most like trying to reduce troop numbers without pulling the units, just killing off the wounded, basically, while letting the more capable troops rest and prepare for a later attack. Although the attacking numbers show only 3,553 troops, the total number in the Japanese bombardment is 10,687. It's not many now though after landing 22k earlier.

This still seems like it won't work well, but I could be wrong. It'll be hard to get troops to recover here, still overstacked. His AV before the adjustment is still going down, not up, every turn.

I don't like that there are still so many ships here floating that we hit, and that my subs are doing nothing about it. I've got 6 midgets and four subs in the hex now, but tomorrow another surprise will show itself, hopefully. Stay tuned.

SW PAC: Sweeps go over Saidor perfectly, drawing up the LR CAP and knocking them down with no radar to guide them together to the attackers. Then after the Corsairs are cleared Helens do some damage again on the base, getting a very welcome 25 airbase supply hits!

Two very important things are in this air losses report. One, but least important, is that Corsairs can't be Corsairs if they're on the defensive with no radar help and in small numbers. The A6M5 group that won the sweeps today is nothing special, so that bodes well for the future.

The second and most important thing is more subtle. Have a look at the Hellcat losses. This is from a turn where they flew three hexes on an escort mission against NO opposition.

They are wearing down. If we do have to go toe to toe, those fighters are not going to be in good shape. He needs to pull back and rest, but will he, and do I dare push to a confrontation to put them to the test?

SUBS: Still no luck near Marcus. Setting new patrols daily.

BURMA: Kept sweeps going a day too long at Akyab as a big LR CAP wiped out about 20 Tojos. Thanks to the armor only 4 pilots were KIA.

CENT PAC: My surprise was two fold at Marcus. Only one element arrived, which was the Rufe's defending the troops here. They couldn't of course stop the massive strike that arrived, but they did take a small tithe from the attackers. That and they made the Allies think twice about hitting here on a milk run, resulting in no bombing of the troops on the 19th.

These attacks have been extremely effective, and our troops are experiencing high disruption and the AV total drop about 10 points with each strike. Luckily he'll run out of sorties soon! The Allied shock attacks continue to be a VP point factory, resulting in 86 destroyed devices on the 18th and 98 devices on the 19th. His total troops are holding at around 10k.

On the day we lose 5 Rufes for a reported 4 Avengers. A few more Allied planes are lost to ops again. Love the detail of the SBD firing on the Rufe as those dive to the lower TBFs.

Did the KB escape?

Yes. The KB is happily many hexes away and getting some needed rest before the next phase of resistance. He's running out of sorties I think and so I was thinking I might want to be ready to hit a retreat if it happened, but I think it's more prudent to let the other forces bleed what they can and get the KB to optimum condition and upgraded as much as possible. I can add some D4Y3 and A6M5b plus hopefully get enough Jills to upgrade the last of the Kates from the KB.

The I-158 nails the smallest and slowest of the Allied CVEs, the Long Island, near Marcus. I'll take it! It went down like a rock after two ammo explosions and a fuel explosion. On board it looks like there was a Hurri Ib group of 25 planes which are show as 'lost on the ground.' Nice!

CENT PAC: The other portion of the surprise at Marcus also finally works after two frustrating days of no flights from these guys. Only portions of the two groups of Jakes here fly, probably due to the poor state of the base, but at least they do get some hits on an APA and a CL that had already been damaged. Even little bombs start fires, but also these strikes force the ships to all go to flank and react, hopefully adding damage even to the ones not hit in the strikes that are shown as heavy damage in the midget sub attacks.

APA Wharton had taken a torp from the CV planes, and is now show as sunk, but I'm not positive yet about that. At least 3 out of the 4 hits were penetrating here.

All of the hits on the Concord were bouncers, but one took out a 6 inch gun. It showed some smoke before the hits, but nothing serious.
