Tricky, isn't it. And even trickier considering there is a whole bunch of good war movies covering other wars. Some good mini series out there as well.

AAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

You've made me think of another.... Waterloo. And then there's Zulu....

Oh for goodness sake

Zulu had some amazing body shots at the beginning. Amazing for 1964, that is.

Although not historically accurate to the tee, Anthony Hopkins played the Führer quite well!

Was Das Boot a film? I only recall seeing a series, but may have been cut down into a film. If so then that would rank highly.

YES IT WAS!!

If the matter is war films...
1. Schindler's list
2. Das Boot
3. Tora Tora Tora
4. Battle of Britain
5. Flag of our Fathers

Chose not to include Star Wars ep IV-VI here

I just watched Inside Out. I while it wasn't as funny as I expected I still thought it a good movie.

This miniseries was broadcast in Italy during the Summer of the same year (I remember it was divided in three parts). I watched it with my mother (who was and still is a war movies nut ), and, for some reason, I was fascinated by the character of Albert Speer. One of the very first military history books I bought was about him.

The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story

Just got around to watching the ten episodes of this TV miniseries.

What a brilliant piece of drama. Beautifully constructed, well paced, superbly acted - brilliant!

Most of the actor likenesses to the real people were pretty spot on too.

A wholly entertaining programme that raises many, many questions - as of course did the trial at the time. Thoroughly recommended.

The Killing, a Danish TV series made in 2007 and has subtitles. It's outstanding and details the aftermath of a murder. Highly recommend.

I've been watching the documentary series Tales of Irish Castles. All six episodes are on UKTV catchup.

Denial a film about the libel trial in 2000 when the ahem... 'historian' David Irving sued the American professor Deborah Lipstadt for libel over her claim he was a holocaust denier.

Excellent - and I mean excellent - cast led by Rachel Weisz (Lipstadt) and Tom Wilkinson (her QC Richard Rampton) - not to mention Timothy Spall as Irving and Andrew Scott as Anthony Julius. A very watchable film about the trial that truly exposed Irving for what he is.

Season 2 of The Expanse premiers here in the US tomorrow night. This is a great space opera for those of you that like the genre. It's really a well done SyFy channel original based upon the books by "James S.A. Corey". It's roughly akin to a slightly milder version of A Song of Fire and Ice (better known as Game of Thrones) in space.

We just rewatched all of season 1 in preparation for the premier. A very good adaptation of a thought provoking series of novels.

A few things on the go:

Fortitude has started its second series - and the opening episode was okay
The Affair has just finished series three - if they make a fourth they need to step it up a bit.....
The Halcyon - a WWII piece that has proved surprisingly watchable

Missing my annual dose of Penny Dreadful though

Netflix had a four part series on the Einsatzgruppen-their origin and their activities on the (mostly) Eastern front. Interesting and informative series, but terribly depressing.

Had, you say, so they do not have it any longer?

Any chance you recall the name of the series?

The series was "The Einsatzgruppen". 4 episodes. It was there as of two days ago. I imagine that some European countries may not have it available, as there does tend to be some restriction of themes such as this at times.

Edit: Can anyone recommend a good documentary about the attack on Poland? And one on the attack on Norway? Maybe one on the invasion of France on 1940 as well?

The Len Deighton thriller SS-GB has been made into a mini series that starts on BBC1 on Sunday!

Haven't looked forward to a TV program so much in ages!

I read this avidly, like all Len Deighton books, when it came out. One of the (very) few advantages of growing old is that I can look forward to watching it, not knowing a thing about what happens.

If anyone is interested, a really first class read is, Bomber by Len Deighton. The 24 hour story of an RAF bombing raid in 1943.

Recently scouring IMDB, I came across this little ditty about an upcoming motion picture: Our Shining Sword. It's allegedly in filming right now, release date (ostensibly) November 1, 2017.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3486080/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

Anyone know more?

ETA: Please oh please oh please don't "Rafe McCawley it".

ETA II: There appear to be two trailers on Youtube (search for "Our Shining Sword". Here's the second:
